I've had fun grouping in just about every MMO I've played in, even the bad ones like RIFT. That's not really a selling point.
But if you can show a video or give more precise moments and give a proper compare and contrast to a moment from WoW I'd consider this something with substance. Seeing as it's just free hype for a wow-clone, you've left me wanting.
Also asking for flames is trolling.
I love when people call any game a WoW-clone. You should actually be calling it an MMORPG-clone, as WoW had nothing original either.
WoW has it's good points, originallity not being one of them.
{mod edit}
And thus RIFT being a WoW-clone and you pointing out the monotony of WoW, leads to a perfect circle conclusion that RIFT is nothing special.
There are plenty of MMOs that aren't like any of the MMOlite games. So giving either of these yawn-inducing pieces of crap the name MMORPG is an insult to a once proud industry.
What people fail to realize is that if Rift becomes half as popular as some are hoping it will, the game will have plenty of "wow crowd".
You people have somehow convinced yourselves, through hating of wow, that wow somehow breeds douchebags. It's the amount of people and how the general public can be in video games and especially the internet. The more popular/mainstream anything gets the more douchebags that will be involved, it's simple statistics.
I can easily see this happening. WoW is getting long in the tooth even for many WoW afficionados and while they may not be seeking anything hugely different, they'll be looking for something new- especially the types that were always begging Blizzard to open new servers (likely so they could race to the cap for server firsts) when there were still many servers suffering from low populations.
Rift currently does absolutely nothing to deter douchebags from being douchebags. I can see the single button press to join rift groups being Rift's dungeonfinder- it allows anonymity, ninjaing, and zero repercussions for poor play. It allows further progression through grouping with zero community growth or cohesion.
However, that's what I got from beta 5- from what I have seen Trion is open to suggestions from the players, and perhaps they'll bring back active GMs on servers that monitor/police the players but I sincerely doubt that will happen.
The only nice community is the real nerdy ones like Star Wars, Star Trek and all the Comic mmos. They have so much love to the lore and all that so they don't have time to run around and hate. =D
Actually,i find the community to be one of the worst i haver ever seen.
The global chat is just terrible.
"RIFT HAS SKILLS,WOW CLONE"
you can read crap like that the whole time.
It's funny how they say it's not a wow clone but at the same time they can't stop talking about wow.
No offense, but.....you just described EVERY beta and MOST games outside of WoW itself. I have never been in any beta since WoW's release that wasn't this way.
And thats his point. The OP said this game has an awsome community, when in reality it isn;t any better then any other game, including WoW.
Also, the OP thinks Rift has some great community just because player flock together around zones? Really? I've played a few beta events and sure i roll with tons of people fighting off rifts and invaders. But can somone please tell me the names of the players that joined me in raid parties? No? Thats ok, I cause I couldn't tell you either. I fought hundreds of NPC's, closed many Rifts, fought many invasions, with hundreds of people and won just about every time. YEt tehre is one thing I have never done this whole time in beta. Thats type anything in my chat channel. Not once did I say hello or goodbye. Not once did I ask "hey where is everyone going to? ". Not once did I ask what is our stratedgy to defeat the enemy. Not once did I ask or say anything to anyone. And i everyone else I knew who tried it said they did the same thing.
I really wish MMO's would back to making games that really did promote playing with thousands of otehr people andalso include incentives to actually communicate with them. As of right now we have MMO's designed to be solo games with chat channels or group games that require you not to commuincate with anyone to play.
Really silly. I am starting to despise the new game generation and its so called "community".
Yes, I keep seeing talk of a nice community too and yet really....to me....it was just a typical beta community these days. Plenty of "WoWspeak," loads of not so subtle vitriol, whining about this and that, some praising RIFT and some cursing RIFT. Pretty much like every beta I've ever been in. Like I said in the other post. And by the way.....that isn't what the person I quoted was saying. They were saying RIFT's community was, and I quote, "one of the worst I've ever seen." I don't believe I can take it THAT far, from my own personal perspective. The "worst" reward belongs to WoW, imo, sorry. RIFT's community, albeit a mixed bag from what I can tell, is NOT even close to as reprehensible as WoW's community....at least on some servers. This is why I commented the way I did. I do NOT believe RIFT is one of the worst....far from. It's just your typical beta community.
I, for one, am convinced that you have no idea what a "community" is going to be like in a game, for at least six months after release. I can't say WHAT Rift's community will be like from what I saw in beta. Hopefully it will all be good, but only time will tell.
Actually,i find the community to be one of the worst i haver ever seen.

This. Every beta that I've been in have been like this. Even games that are so far away from simliarities of WoW get this stupid comparison (i.e. DCUO).
I, for one, am convinced that you have no idea what a "community" is going to be like in a game, for at least six months after release. I can't say WHAT Rift's community will be like from what I saw in beta. Hopefully it will all be good, but only time will tell.
Agreed- and even then things are likely to change. During vanilla WoW I was on a pretty nice, mature, RP server and there was actually active role-playing going on in the channels but as the expansions came it devolved into the stereotypical barrens chat. Could be that the changes in WoW over time made it more palatable to that type of player and less so to the traditional RPer, or could be because people invited their asshat friends who had no intentions of RP to the server- who knows?
At any rate, server communities can and will change over time- it remains to be seen whether Trion will take control of the community or shield themselves from it.
Community is usually like that in BETA because they know their character is useless for release. During the real game everyone will be greedy.
well the community has to come together or else elite mobs will spawn from the rifts and destroy every quest hub, you cant ignore it, when a zone invasion starts you are involved whether you like it or not.
People do though, unless it is the hub they are working. It's usually not a problem as a zerg wlll probablly turn up and deal with it eventually. Sometimes it's a bit of a wait if it is an ellite foothold in some out of the way place. Luckily there aren't really too many out of the way places.
Actually when you play with rl friends or family, it really does not matter so much how the community is. You create your own sub community and can play with the people you wish to play with. Anyway I have not encountered any MMO without any childish comments in general chat channels or stupid people in groups, not even games which pretend to have good communities like EvE online. I think being anonymous in online games really brings out the worst in some people.
As much as I love to bash wow it's playerbase as a whole isn't bad. Problem is it's trade chat spammers and vile forum community scream louder than the other 90-95% of it's community that's pretty decent.
I would say the beta community has been great am hoping to see a lot of them upon release on the same server .
The thing that makes Rift different to WoW for me is that even the earliest instances like realm of the fae arn't facepalm easy .
I recently leveled a priest in WoW but ended up sticking to doing it through souly pvp/bgs because I found the rest of the game appallingly simplified .
Rifts appears to be the game I've been waiting for these last few years .
11 Million + paid accounts in WoW. If Rift hits 2 Million and maintains it for 1 year, it will be a HUGE success. IF. I don't know if it will or won't. A lot of games I thought would be successful haven't been. No one has had the success of WoW, so, in that respect (success not gameplay), you want to be as close to WoW as possible.
I don't think it can be done again. I don't think even SW:TOR can do it, and it is being made by a great RPG company, with a huge budget, on one of the best franchises in the world.
What I would rather see. Games that shoot for a Niche. Build the game and plan to have only 100k-150k active subcribers. Use less money to build it by utliizing one of the available engines, and concentrate on innovative gameplay and unique content. Shoot for genres that are not overplayed, Like World of Tanks, APB, and something out of the old west. Then team up with other groups with a niche game, and offer a blanket subscrition for 5 or 6 games ala Station Pass.
2M? You must be kidding. They should be more than happy if they manage to retain 200k after the one year mark. Anything beyond that is profit for the development of the game and the investment on the remaining MMOs produced by TRION.
Because of the zone-events, wich is pretty different then Wow, u'll paticipate in public groups very often. When the loot is mostly automaticly given by contribution, the Greed-factor will be minimum, you ll always get your share. U work harder, ull get more. This factor can create a bit of camarade-ship in the zone. Closing rifts should gain more, then the incidentel loot Rift-bosses drop.
A thing they can add is to disable the Need-button for classes that cant use/wear the loot. There always will be some players pushing Need on everything, so maybe that's an idea.
For now, I must say, the community is nice, met only a 1 idiot anoiying kiddy in the 3 beta's I played. Right now, the positive feel is surely a beta vibe, but it could maintain as long you cant deliberatly be f****d by some greedy idiots.
Do you know what WoW's community was like during beta and release? It was great. People organized their own raids among strangers and honor among factions was commonplace.
WoW's community was nothing short of great at the beginning, which is why it attracted more people through word of mouth than it's own adverts.
Now it's no better, or worse than any other game with a lot of players. Whenever you have a random sample of a lot of people there is bound to be at least one asshole in the bunch; when you have millions, there's going to be quite a few more than just one.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
This might not last but at least for now, there's a bit of camaraderie between the players. I've been in numerous raids where we just rode across the zone saving little quest hubs, closing rifts, destroying footholds, etc. All the while, absorbing new raids into the fold until we ultimately finished what we set out to do.
like i said before, it might wear off but for now it is miles ahead of wow mainly because of the community.
/flame on
Its funny how you say it MIGHT wear off. Of coarse its going to wear off. I have been part of the MMO community for to long to have faith that one day people would work together for more then just a chance at a purple or blue carrot.

Pointing out the similarities between this game and another, especially one as successful as WoW, is anything but hating.
Rift > WoW because it dosen't look like Captain cave man meets the simpsons.

oh goodie, sounds pretty immature to me another negative in the bucket. All the kiddies are flocking to a new game.
