Rift does feel a lot like Aion to me, just with more booms. I'm still on the fence. It's been said to death that the Trion devs are responsive. That's true. They'll respond to a massive storm of player discontent, but I rather see a development team that's more proactive and doesn't make boneheaded kneejerk decisions in the first place.

Are we talking about the beta forum or the public one? As much as i'm loving the game, i've contributed to the criticism of the character models, animations, character creator, lack of appearance tabs, and many more threads in the beta section, as have many people. I'll continue to do so and welcome any decent suggestions from others, as long as it has nothing to do with flying mounts.
I don't bother with the public section because it's usually a bunch of people that have no desire to even play and just troll. There are a ridiculous amount of oldschool players on that forum interested in Rift that want nothing resembling anything WoW, as ironic as that may sound.
What did you do bring up squirrels and easily fixable crap like clipping again? The game has some solid issues like pve balance, no one wants too hear about the trivial crap right now. When my DPS cleric is doing more than 40-50% of a rogue, warrior or Mage DPS soul in pve. I'll listen to the other crap. Your right the game isn't perfect and we don't need the devs wasting time on the people that thing foliage should be more robust and squirrels should animate better...
Oh gawd! Another "clerics are OP" person... Did you ever consider that maybe some of the other classes aren't properly equiped (that is assuming that we're not talking about gameplay below level 20...)?? I know that for a short while it seemed like my Cleric (Justicar / Shaman / Purifier) was so awesome. Then after 20 I decided to start trying other souls because I felt gimped. So you'll have to excuse me if I say I don't understand your complaints about "PvE Balance".
Now None of this is to say that Rift is absolutely perfect. Cause it's NOT! I can tell you for sure that there are some issues, that if they aren't fixed by release, I will cancel my sub. Just to give Trion a "wake up call", so to speak. Then again I only preordered because I read that Trion wasn't going to "cave" to all the players, like you, saying "Class X" is OP! So I'm in for the Headstart and the first month. But I won't finish that First Month, If they don't immedately fix several of the obvious issues.
Its just that I'm certain I can find something else to play... So I'm Not going to support any companies that want to publish half-assed MMORPGs. I may have just had a relapse of judgement in this case... =P
Clerics aren't op. They're balanced for pvp. Melée and caster cleric struggle with sustained DPS in pve encounters. Wanna know what gonna happen if Trion doesn't fix that? Every cleric in order to raid will have to either heal tank because any rogue, warrior or Mage DPS soul can do the job of any two DPS clerics. Does that sound cool to you?
Rock, i think he thought you going to complain that the clerics are OP, not that they need help. BTW which server you playing on. beta 6 starts tomorrow, im in it. was wondering if i couldnt pester you into taking me under your wing a bit. Always a blast when you can get a nice core group going.
Just the slightest hint that you think something needs addressing and the zealous fans start trolling immediately to shut the discussion down. This is what ruins games. Zealous fans that cannot admit that a game has flaws or is not as polished and finished as the developers claim.
Look at all the bad games that were supposedly great according to the fans! Warhammer and Aion anyone? It is one thing to say a game is good, it is another to trumpet it as the next coming and that is exactly what we've seen time and time again only to watch that games population dwindle to 1/20th what it was at launch.
We do not have a clue how the end game of Rift is at all. It still has no guild banks. Some combat animations are the suck. Melee combat sounds are the worst of any game I have ever played. That is just a few concerns. There are many more. Yet the fans of this game will not let anyone in the least bit critic it at all. Say one thing that is even the least bit of a criticism and they are on you like flies to poo.
Drug addicts will take what they can get regardless of the quality of the product. Tell a crack head that the hit he's about to take is cut with detergent and he's likely to cuss you.

It's very hard to get a good discussion in a non-threaded environment. One will post his thoughts, then he'll get some insightful replies mixed with some bad comments. Too often those bad comments are going to trigger replies, while insightful posts are easily forgotten.
Just as an example in your thread about your blog entry on Rift, you mainly replied to Rockgod99 attacks. While this was entertaining, other more insightful posts were left unanswered. Discussion like that one strongly puts the emphasis on bad comments in a thread.
Edit: As I stated below, I'm not trying to blame you. We're all to blame. That thread was a very good example nonetheless.

True, dat. You get more flies with poo than vinegar.
I've got no issue with folks liking the game. God knows we could use an MMO made in the last few years thatfor once doesn't go down in flames after the free month. But rest assured, the game will NOT be that game if the devs are led by blind praise... such praise is even more harmful than the all too common blind panning of fledgling MMO's.
@OP: I don't know, the times I checked the beta forums there seemed to be enough critical posts and threads around that weren't stamped down, but I didn't check lately though.
Regarding discussions, yeah, there seems to be unreasonal or highly biased people on both sides of the fence, both critics and fans, and those sometimes seem to be the most active and cause for most of the polarizing in debates.
What I find often helps (although doesn't resolve the problem fully) is to put my concerns with a game in well founded arguments, summing up both good and bad aspects and a willingness to acknowledge the good points other posters that disagree with my viewpoint, occasionally that helps bring a discussion back from the edge of senseless flame debates. Occasionally.

Well Teala you will run into more fanboys and "my game can do no wrong" types on the official forums of any game. I like Rift a lot but agree they should never assume that their latest build is perfection. So far Trion has done an awesome job though. Have you preordered or are you planning too?

exactly the same thing happens here Teala.
wasnt you very pro Rift a little while ago yourself though?
See you missed the point, being pro Rift ,is like saying you like the game, that does NOT mean there is no room for improvement.Just because someone likes a game, that is not saying ,ok it is perfect, never need to fix anything. If we all thought like that Sqaure Enix would not be attempting to fix FFXIV and it would probably be shut down. The ONLY reason NCSOFT gave up on TR was becuase it wieghed it's options,if it tried to improve it ,they would owe a lot of money to their producers/employees example Lord British alone was promised 20 mil off the top.Otherwise even NCSOFT would have tried to improve TR.
The people that won't admit to flaws are the ones that actually hold back a game from being better, you would think people want their game to be the best it can be,but they won't allow it ,for fear bad rep means less people playing the game.
I had this exact same thing happen when i was playing RFO,i thought the game as a whole was cool ,but needed lots of improvement,i was met with EXTREME flaming for even mentioning any of the game needed improvements.Well guess what ,the game closed down not but 2 months later,so i guess all those that refused to admit the game needed change ,got no game to play at all.
Games are always flawed, the devs or producer is only human,he/she/they cannot foresee a lot of future problems in design,so it is up to the players to help them in making the game the best it can be.Then you get stubborn devs or ones who won't listen to anyone, example i asked [sent emails]Square to bring in a mentoring system,2 years before they did, because i saw how it worked in EQ2.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
The official forums community does seem to act a bit harsh to critism, but that is to be expected. Like most communities online, the larger they are, the louder trolls become, for and against the game.
I found plenty of good advice and class discussion there, during the last beta, as well as helping out some confused players, so its not all bad.
And yes i would stay away from threads discussing in game boob size, that seems to be a magnet for trolls whipping others into a frenzy. Its entertaining to say the least.
You should learn to filter. There is good discussion to be had. I am surprised that after all this time playing and participating on boards you have not picked up the guerilla warfare of forum navigation. There are always ways to advance arguments even against the zealots. Losing your temper is never the way.
If you catch a batch of them on and ask the wrong thing in game, it will be time to roll a new toon. They can be pretty rabid. It is not much different than elsewhere in the end.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

eh?
No. No point missed. You don't seem to understand what I posted though.
There were two parts to my post;
First, I made a statement, that the same happens here on this forum, which it does. (by a few of the names, amongst others, I have seen in this very thread claiming they are 'open to criticism' of Rift no less)
and then I asked Teala a very seperate question- namely wasnt she very pro Rift a little ago, because I was interested in what had changed. This was because I hadnt seen her post here with any criticisms before (quite the opposite in fact, I had only seen her defending against criticisms).
I hope this clarifies somewhat. Sorry you had to type all that out, though my post was addressed directly to Teala and so it really probably wasnt necessary.
Well Teala you will run into more fanboys and "my game can do no wrong" types on the official forums of any game. I like Rift a lot but agree they should never assume that their latest build is perfection. So far Trion has done an awesome job though. Have you preordered or are you planning too?
True. Given the amount of negative posting, which has been TINY compared to most unreleased games, there has to be a record of "WoW fanboi's be h8'n on my game"/"WoWboi's must B scared Rift gonna pwn their game" posts regarding Rift.
Can't imagine how upset they'd be if Rift got even half the criticism SWToR or DCUO have gotten.
As ya know, it would be the worst news in the world for Rift to be an insanely awesome game that picked up subs faster than the server could return "accept" keys on. I mean, who wants a great, new alternative to our current MMO selection? Just gives me sick chills just thinkin' about it.... brrrhrhrhrhrr! :P
It is like this on all official forums, the fanboys gather there in masses and the moderators are sure that they are not hindered in any way, as they are fanatically supporting their game and viciously assault anyone who has a hint of criticism of the game.
That is why I always stay away from official forums, they should be called fanboys forums really.

SWTOR - SPORPG
DCUO - Port of a console brawler.
There might be a reason that TOR and DC get blasted a lot.
As an aside as well, RIFT is nowhere near as popular as TOR/DC were/are. Trolls are like hackers - it was not that Apple was immune, but rather that they were not popular enough to waste any time on them...
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
I avoid posting things on any beta forum because no matter what the thread will always turn into a shitstorm.
Any issues I have or suggestions I want to make usually get reported through email or ingame reports. It's just more sane that way :P
One of the biggest problems is fans of the game tend to get a little tired of seeing BS negative posts and eventually just start attacking everything that seems the slightest bit negative. The more people that get into the betas = more useless posts about how 'This game copied that game!' or 'This isn't 1999 but the game looks like it is...' get made which leads to more people getting cranky.
Even good posts that do nothing more than offer up suggestions or constructive crit tend to get looked at as though its bashing the game, though this usually happens when the poster comes off like they think they either speak for everyone or assume they are an expert (arm chair dev).
So yeah, long story short; Use beta forums at your own risk and expect a lot of negativity.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

But the worst criticism I've seen are claims that it's a "WoW-clone"... these days, people will call Fallout 3 a WoW clone!
So yeah. I don't really get the defensiveness of Rift fans. At all. The negative consensus I've seen has been, "well made, polished, but mostly same ol'". So in a forum world where a negative opinion tends to go like,
"If a turd could vomit, and that vomit were to have a child with its alcoholic sister, that child's turd vomit could make a better game than this."
...I'd say Rift fans don't need to be so defensive.
