Dear god! I have never seen such a vicious community in all my MMO days. It is almost cult like where no one can say anything bad, the official forums are scary. There seems to be so much propaganda about the game going out to forums, floods of it saying it’s “Awesome”. I can get people liking a game but there is something sinister with what is going on in people’s posts. Something just isn’t right the game just isn't that "good". Any thoughts on this? I just find it bizarre.

Yeah I have posted a few times about how poor the game is and how they are just kidding everyone into thinking it's a good game, well the thing is the hypermeter will blow up once so many people buy then leave after a few months the same as other MMO's which thought they were the best too.
There is no way that Rift will ever get close to what Wow had done because they are trying to copy and do what Wow has done and for them to try and mislead people into getting folks to spread the word that Rift is amazing will imo hit them where it hurts soon after release. The clever thing they did do was create a frenzy for the beta keys making people think they needed a VIP key to get into every beta, I have been in beta since day one on a normal beta key and have told them to stop sending me beta invites as I am not prepared to waste any of my valuable time testing this poor product. I have today unsubscribed and should of done that weeks ago but could not be bothered until today.
Still most people are adult enough to know how to spead their money and I hope that some do not fall into the trap of wasting both time and money and if they do then thats a shame but many have in the past and will again in the future, people who keep falling for hype deserve to lose money imo for not learning!!
Rift is no gift....

While I won't be buying it, the reasons people come up with to knock it do get pretty ridiculous. Lack of objectivity on both sides breeds situations like this.
Sinister is crediting this weird train of thought some intelligence.
It's the new thing.
People like the new thing.
They'll defend their new thing. We live in a brand-based society, after coming out of an economy-based society, a nation-based society, a religion-based society and so on.
The King sees people defending their iPods, their Zunes, their Nikes, their JIF peanut butter product. All fine and adequate products, but really nothing special and there are techniqually and inarguable superior products. But you tell that to the Legion, try it. I dare you.
The King will remember you fondly.
King how do I apply to become a Court Jester?
You just did.
And I'm happy to tell you that you got the job. The pay is exactly nothing, but you do get to imagine yourself in as awesome of a hat as you can imagine.
Now, entertain me.
Here's the deal. Its like that in all ofical forums. You say crap about GW@ in their forums, the community gets balistic. Same over at SWTOR.
But i don't think its blind fanboism. Its their game. I understand them. I dont agree with them on their opinions but its theres. I am guessing you too don't agree with them. And here in lies the problem. Imagine you try a game out and think its the perfect game for you. You go to the offical forums and start spewing off on how you hate the game. Granted, I don;t know if you went over there and jsut trolled or was just giving contructive feedback. Bottom line is though. Most people who like the game is going to spend more time on the offical forums, hence why you get bombarded with hate for not liking Rift.
Besides, if I had to guess you probably were telling everyone why u hate teh game and they all heard it before. but why are you even there? U think this close to launch they are going to be simply revamp teh whole ssytem because certain players don;t like it.
I am curious on what you exactlly said over there.....
I had just finished beta and did a constructive criticism of what I found was wrong in the game and what I didn't like, then you get the over the top replies. I have seen fanboys before defend a game but not like this, anyone and I mean anyone says anything negative and people are on it like a golden eagle. I just have a funny feeling that it's not the general public who post at times on their forums and other places. I have honestly not seen anything as bad as some people have been acting on their forums.
So what exactly did you say?
Thanks that was easy *puts on jesters cap* now if I could only find ways to entertain.
Some of you need to get a grip on reality instead of hounding someone over their opinions, criticism is always good for a MMORPG as long as the developers read up on it and decide to tackle the issues. Rift has a long way to go if it wants to keep subscribers over a sustained period of time, the engine they picked is out of date it wasn’t even good when it was used for Warhammer Online. Rift isn’t helped by the fact that TERA and Guild Wars 2 look to be on another level with regards to graphics, AI and questing. You would expect some sort of voice overs with important quests to make it come to life but it just seems dull.
The AI in Rift is shoddy at best and even games from 5 years ago would put it to shame, the combat just seems to be glow effects with different colours and the sounds need work. The combat is just bland at best; it feels like I am just bashing buttons mindlessly without any skill. The questing system in place is unimaginative and will drive many players away especially because after level 10 Rift becomes a grind. When I say grind I mean boring, taking time to level up doesn’t bother me if I am enjoying the experience of it. Rifts are average at best; it’s just random mob spawn there seems to be no significance in completing them, there isn’t even any memorable characters that I have come across so far.
Performance issues need to be work on, this can be changed massively over time but I worry for the engine once more because Warhammer never had real multisampling AA. This isn’t the game for me I tried to like it and I have reinstalled Beta 3 times to give it another shot. This doesn’t mean people should go on the defensive due to my opinion; the Rift community is going downhill due to peoples negative reactions to criticism. If Rift is to survive in a subscription model and not end up F2P the community needs to be constructive and allow people from all walks of life to have their voice heard. I am finished with this game but wish Trion luck in the future in providing people a profitable MMO that they enjoy. Thanks for the beta invite!
So what did you want to accomplish by posting that over there?
I was invited to beta, played the game, hence they wanted feedback.
This.
Lack of objectivity shown by a number of people on both sides often leads to polarized debates and flamewar discussions.
I've noticed a general intolerance with some groups of people at this and other forums towards those who disagree with them.
I mean, kneejerk attacking people or namecalling them trolls or haters just because they post criticisms is as bad as saying the game will 'fail' or isn't good just because you didn't like it, or calling fans who like the game 'brown nosers' or 'blind fanboi'.
It's as if people need to make their own opinion grander and have more impact by stating that a 'game will fail' or is 'terribly bad' if they didn't like it, or that the 'game will be huge' or is 'awesome and the best around' if they did like it. While most of someone's opinion is just personal taste and preferences, nothing more than that.
Me, I won't be buying the game as of this moment, but what they delivered so far plays as a solid, good game, I only wonder about the longevity but I'm not gonna indulge into predictions of the future how a 'game will fail' or 'be a huge success'.
@OP: was it on the beta forums or public forums? I think I'm gonna create a thread where I post my concerns and misgivings with the game in a neutral way, then gauge how the response is.
The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Well 90% of that post was about stuff in teh game that will not change. They're not going to revamp the whole quest system. The rifts are not going to change. They're certainly not going to use a different engine.
And on top of that, you start the post by telling everyone that they need a reality check. Ya, no instigating there.
If you walked into a room and talked to me that way about something I liked doing we would have problems too.
I've been beta testing Rift on the past 3 beta events, the games "ok", it runs, it's pretty, it has standard MMO ingredients. It's "Ok". It does more or less exactly what it says on the tin. It's just not for me, it reminds me alot of other well known MMO's already saturating the market (which I won't name for fear of becoming the next mmo bashing pinata). It has its own nice gimmicks but that's not enough for me.
The forums are frightening, it's like a religious zeal has taken hold and people are out to spread the word of Rift. I truly can't understand where they're coming from. You'd think (insert religious icon here) was the one to have developed the game.
the game is seeing a lot of tourists at the moment with a lot of opinions. Before the last beta the forums were totally different It was like overnight during the last beta, a ton of people came in at the last moment and started trying to change the game. I think the community got a little identity crisis or something because it turned into an all out war on the forums. When the game launches and becomes pay2troll you will see it settle back down.
In retrospect I probably shouldn't have handed out my 25 use beta key but meh I wanted everyone to see for themselvs whether they like it or not. Im new to fantasy games so I am all over it.
Your right! The game is not a Godsent cookie for all. Though its still a good game. I think a lot of the community is just sick of being defensive to all the peeps calling it a bad game. That and there is just a ton of WoW trolling going on. Its been crazy on both sides of the fence.
{Mod Edit} There is a difference between feedback and saying "in WoW I did this" or "in WoW the pvp was like this"
Every piece of constructive feedback on that forum has been debated. Anytime someone has trolled they have been reported and had their threads shut down.
{Mod Edit}
Majypoo first you attacked all who like rift ("you need to get a grip of reality"), then you proceeded to bash the game by telling that engine, graphic, quests and combat in the game suck and need to be revorked for the game have any chance of being good.
The community may not be good, but in this case you are the one whose post couldn't lead to anything constructive.
This game sucks rhino balls, I think everyone's insane. It's just wow, AION, WAR and LOTRO wrapped up it looks like LOTRO with crappier graphics, kind of remind me of AION (god that game sucks), even reminds me of WOW in way (my fiancee said it looks like wow lol) and WAR. It's using DX9 gamebryo shit that thinks it's CRYSIS. There's crappy textures with glowy bloomy effects masking shitty textures and bad character animations and combat and spell effects everywhere, its a laugh riot. Enjoy! 1 million boxes sold then 100 k subs in 8 months with 50 k in a yr leading to F2P. Sorry I called it, cannot wait to come back here to see it happen since that;s what s going to happen. It's crap. Guild Wars 2 looks amazing and it will be amazing since it's backed by the best dev house ever Arenanet. I loved Guild Wars not a traditional MMO but a fun coop rpg online game and its sequel will be amazing since it's open world and persistent. Oh and animations and characters look great unlike Rift with their "hey look at me with a stick up my ass" animations and crappy ass spell effects. Sounds suck too in Rift. Oh and they have ex devs from Vanguard and WAR no wonder it sucks LMAO. I beta tested til Level 30 laughed mostly, cryed and said "WHY?"
I've personally given up on medieval fantasy mmorpgs. After no mmorpg had the courage to continue where Dark Age of Camelot left off I've just had little interest. When Mythic was half fired and fully bought out so they would present NO competition for Warhammer I was even more distraught.
So tired of the same 2 faction model with no advanced pvp and limited race class options.
Dark Age set the standard to such an extent they had to be destroyed internally. Three factions - each realm completely its own (no interference)..massive castle frontiers for each realm. You could level from 1-50 in your own realm without seeing an enemy - just like in REAL life since your army would beat the crud out of invaders.
Dark Age had none of this "save money and force players to pve in the same zone" crap that every single mmorpg provides due to laziness and a lack of logistical conceptualism. Though you could pvp in the zame zones in NON-instanced fully persistant environments.
I swear you would think that developers these days never picked up a single history book or watched the massive siege warfare of Lord of the Rings (the lore that everyone robs). Dark Age of Camelot provided actual recognizable lore from Dark Ages Europe - no Tolkien rip off here, merely pulling from the same sources that Tolkien himself pulled from. Forty some classes and races...and now what do we have?
Dummed down mmorpgs with massive eye candy or endless dungeon rides...It's a sad state of affairs. Hopefully someday, someone with enough wealth will have enough talent to return us to the traditional fantasy mmorpg genre. Give us siege warfare, races and classes spread across complex political dividing lines.
Rifts isn't it. Having a TON of fun on a PvP server in DC Universe Online. Now that's one heck of a fun game though I do miss my fantasy mmo.
My 2 cents.
For as much Haterade as you guys have you forget one simple fact. As long as you hate on Rift, but fanboi it up for WoW you are supporting what you hate I guess.
Who exactly do you people think is setting the American standard for MMO's right now? If you hate it then goto the WoW fansites and go stand on street corners and try to kill it.
Even if Blizzard is utterly lying about that 12mil, then every agrees they still have atleast 5-6 million active subs and that blows anything out of the water right now.
Here is the PROBLEM guys every damn time a new MMO has come out in the UNITED STATES you guys and every other damn review site...wahhh wahh it is missing this thing that wow has...wahhh wahhh WAR had this....wahh WoW had this and I loved it.....wahhh why is it like this WoW had this.
Whole MMO community right now in my view are full of hypocrits because everyone has said that at one time. Hell one of your bloggers in ONE SINGLE review said "I like that it has parts from WoW", then two sentences later "I do not like that it has WoW parts in it"
You people are on the CRACK pipe if you do not think SWToR or GW2 is not going to get just RUSHED by the WoW crowd and guess what they are going to want. They are going to want everything you hate and sorry to say, but there is power in numbers.
{Mod Edit}
They are looking for constructive feedback, a lot of what you focused on are things that zero companies at this stage would change. The engine isn't going anywhere, and the way it is modified, people have played with 500-600 people in a small area doing encounters and not had big performance hits, so it can't be so bad.
Graphics, I would take performance over cutting edge graphics, as I am gonna play on pvp, I would rather be able to fight without stutter/lag. Graphics are fine though, they aren't #1, but its not bad either.
Performance - It needs worked on, they have some ati issues, and they need to try to make the engine perform better and more consistantly for everyone, so yes thats valid. I run fine, but another person with a seemingly equal system doesn't...You never know if its the person's machine, or the game, but enough have posted problems to assume some is the game.
Quests - They are fine with me, I hate mini-quests anyway, and they do have voice over in quests, not all of them, but I hate voice overs quests even more than quests...So sure, its valid, but its not a universal thing... As for them not being fun or whatever, sure they are standard quests, collect, kill, activate/use, sow/reap plants, ect....So nothing unique, but neither is pretty much every other game.
Rifts/footholds/invasions - They aren't changing these, they may tweak things, but what the game is named after is not leaving the game, and a lot of people like them. I imagine they will evolve and become more unique as time goes on, and that is a fair critique. They do spawn different types of mobs, such as ranged/melee ect...Different scripts would be good, but then again, people would then recognize which ones they were and could then complain, but more is better, so thats fine.
My complaints would be they need some non-instanced dungeons in the regular areas, and to make the crafting/harvesting better. Supposedly they are going to have contested dungeons/raids/quests/content in pvp areas, so I am interested in how they pull that off...
I post critisizim all the time, no one jumps me, sure people may not agree, but I don't troll either. I post what I dislike, and what I think should replace it, and give examples of games that do this, so people know what I am talking about. i.e. some more open dungeons like in old EQ1, harvesting/crafting like Vanguard ect....
Then they need to stop being so defensive. It's only a choice they can make.
and Abi needs to stop endorsing the 'loyal' community as attack dogs in podcasts.
it's creating a horrible culture over there, and a serious case of the emperor's new clothes.
Its a shame DCUO online was put out by a crap company that went down hill years ago. Aside from that the only complaint I could see with the game was it didnt really offer any incentive for pvping no rewards just ganking even in one of my favorite pvp games Darkfall the reward is great.
