So Ive started using steam recently...And Id like everyones opinion of it!
Do you guys think its good? Bad? That it should do more?
Opinions plsssss ^_^
As for me, I think its great except for the fact that I cant add cd keys to it (i think you cant..) so that you can play games that you didnt get from steam on it and have it on an online backup kind of thing

I installed Steam simply because that's how I had to get my copy of a game that was included with my new gfx card. Now I only use Steam to update my ATI drivers, nothing else. But it is an easy way to buy games, so I may use it more in the future.
it's neat for looking up some of the latest games, and occasionally a good indie title pops up that i'll buy.
Any major games though that catch my interest I usually pick up at gamestop instead, I much prefer to have hard copies of my games.
I've had no problems whatsoever with Steam. Use it when I want to buy a game and Steam offers it. Great for keeping games updated as well. Bad thing about it is that some games are offered there and some not. Some people like the good ol' hard copy though. I'm happy without 100s of discs laying around.
hate steam
when through so much problems to install CIV5
I had the DVD-ROM for the game, yet it still want to download the game to install it. like i said , took me awhile to get it to install.
I actually love steam, its the best thing you can get, especially when they start having sales on new and old games up to 75% Off.
It has its problems, but their not very bad problems, unless you have a piss-poor internet connection.
Many developers (esp indie ones) agree that Steam is actually a platform that is keeping PC-gaming relevant.
An example would be the guys that released 'Recetear: An item shop tale' through Steam. Fairly good game with some unique gameplay mechanics that would have died if it came out via the traditional 'box-copy'.
The fact they regularly have '$5 for game X' sales mean their website is always in the minds of pc gamers.
They usually have a weekend and a mid-week sale (around the 5-10 dollar range for a game) and larger ones during the holidays (esp xmas/new year and summer)

Love Steam. No problems. Great deals when they run sales for specials. Nearly all of my PC games are through Steam.
Only problem is if you buy something that doesn't work on your PC, you're out of luck. Also in that vein, if you have a problem, ask for help in the forums, the official support is useless.
Other than that, its great. Note: I only use it to buy stuff on sale. If I'm going to pay full price, I'd rather have the box.
Steam is great for buying games at a discount and downloading them. Otherwise, I don't use it -- it's wasted resources running in the background of games that don't need it.
Steam is great. I've been using it since Valve first implemented it with CS and DoD. It's truly a great service.
I also use it to buy games (I recently bought Global Agenda) and used it to try out Alien Swarm and Ive been using it mostly to see games for pc. I find it helps a LOT when looking for new pc games to try.
Umm...We can use Steam to update ati drivers? Never knew that o.o
And umm..Id really like to be able to register my other games and just put in my cd key there so that I can just hide the cds and not have to keep changing cds when playing games xD
Edit :
I find a lot of demos too in Steam! which are awesome @_@

I like steam. I have bought quite a few games off of it and I ususally check it out maybe once a week to see what new deals there are. There are always some nice deals on it.
Totally same thing for me.

I hate Steam and refuse to play any game that requires it
They ruined Gamestops and other retail PC game sells
and worst of all is how popular Steam is. For one, things that aren't popular are ALWAYS better and only the sheep follow the popular product.
I never use any Steam product. If it wasn't nearly as popular as it is, I would probably use it more often.

It is the only place I use to buy PC games right now, I've been used it since it was first released and there were no third-party games available.
Their midweek and weekend sales along with the Summer and Christmas sales are just awesome deals one cannot resist when the game seems interesting.
I do use for a few pre-orders though, the pre-load that is often available makes the wait time after release date zero.
Sure, I do miss collecting game boxes, but the pros of digital distribution platforms are exceeding the cons for me by far.
Steam used to be a memory hog (back when games used to consume all available RAM you paid a lot for) but ever since consoles handicapped the progress of PC games, hardware is now strong enough to run it with no performance issues.

So you hate Steam simply because it has become popular? Okay...
i installed steam when cs 1.5 went 1.6 from WON to steam, pretty much had it installed all those years, and until now i bought about 60+ games, mostly from deals and the last christmas deal. i f*cking love steam, best gaming platform ever, i dont care about the downsides of it because of what im benefitting from. bad company 2 for 15 bucks alone was worth all the bad things steam could possible be. so many great deals, super meat boy for 2,5 euros, man i cant tell you how much i love steam

Favorite MMO: Ultima Online
When Half Life 2 came out and I found out I had to have Steam installed to use it I totally despised it. I saw it as an intrusive type of Malware almost. I totally refused to use it for years until about 2 Christmas' ago when a friend told me about the sales they were having so I very reluctantly reinstalled it to check it out. Since then it's been my preferred way of getting games as I saw how stupid and closed minded I had been. I do only run it when I play one of the games however and never leave it resident in memory as I still feel it is a waste of resources when it's not needed.
This last holiday season I probably got about $400-$500 worth of games for about $80. In fact I probably buy 80% of my games during their holiday sales. Their sales are just mind blowing. I've never had any issues installing or running any game I've purchased. It's one of the best ways to get games but as another poster has said I will usually buy a box copy if Steam doesn't have it any cheaper.
Edit: I do have one exception when it comes to Steam... MMOs. Steam is kinda wonky when it comes to how it executes and updates MMOs so I will usually buy or download those from a different source. Other than that I use Steam for all other genres and love it.

Use it to buy lots of games when they're on sell. Very convenient way to shop.

I don't like games where you have use another application (which needs a internet connection) to play a offline game.
Also like I posted before. If I own the DVD-ROM I shouldn't need to "download" the game to install it, when I should be able to install it directly from the DVD-ROM.
They really need a better way to counter piracy, doing it this way is just too much.
Same here. It's great to have a library of games at my fingertips no matter what machine I'm on. Login, download, play.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

Start Steam in offline mode and you can run all yout single-player titles without an internet connection.

But why do you even need steam?
also that never solved the "installation" problem.
But yes I've done that before, only because I wanted to play my favorite title "CIV5"
Some people like it, some don't. Personally, I like it, it's a hub for all my gaming, I can add shortcuts to games and play them from Steam to chat with others online. Beats having to use xfire all the time, also I like how it gives me a conciled list of news posts from various game sites and of course the awesome sales. Supporting Indie developers is key to fueling the success of "Good games" future, and steam gives them a chance to get noticed by a big crowd.

I use it to find great (most of the time) prices on games. And their discounted bundles are hard to refuse.
I used to like having a box for games I buy, but now I really prefer just downloading from Steam. And its quick, for the most part.
I say it takes just a little longer (depending on the size) to load to the PC than from a box, due mainly for the patches. And Steam updates all your games automaticly.
I hated it at first now I love it.
And yes, dont allow Steam to run at startup, no reason too.
