Or, you're just stupid, recommended specs are always specified on the bottom of game's market page.

Anyhow, you can't say you're stuck with a game you can't play. you're stuck with a game you can't play at the moment, but since every 3/4 year everybody get a new computer config, since the old one is not working anymore, you're stuck with a great game you'll have fun playing when you will have a good enough computer.

I'm not wondering "is my computer good enough?" when looking for discounted games on Steam... I'm asking myself "Will I have fun playing?". Since during summer and xmas special offer, you can have -90/95% on 50€games (45$), you'd better not miss that opportunity. So, i always buy games wich are interesting, knowing i'll play them later.

I've had no problems with Steam; the only issue is you can't return a product, so you'd better make sure there's a demo or you buy it on sale, so you can minimize any potential losses. I've only been disappointed (to the point of wanting a refund) with one game, and it was my fault for not doing more research before purchasing.

Perhaps Steam was rough in its early days; I don't know. All I know is the service Valve is running now has few problems, and I'm more than happy with it.

I ask myself the same question "Will I have fun playing it?", because pricing of a game does not factor in if it will be fun to play. Most people who pay PC games have general idea if their system can run it, and if they read the system reqs. But if hes like my nephew who is 18, who just plays games and don't know anything about windows or the simplest thing about hardware, they should just stick with xbox or PS3.

I saw a post saying that steam is "bloatware", in  a way it is IMO. A software that advertise games every time you log onto your steam account, becomes annoying. Oh why not set it to offline mode? but let me ask you this, why do I need to play it in offline mode and not just play it without steam?

If you've built computers and played PC games for a long time, you learn that you should always back up data, and thats what I've done. I've backed up all my music, movies, and games onto my external HDs, these are more convient then streaming or downloading them. When you're on the road , vacationing or bussiness trip, you don't have to rely on down loading content from a poor WIFI connection which could take 2-3 hours. So eternal HDD - faster, convient, and no advertisments.

10-30 dollars more for every game than in stores, and you dont even get a box. That about sums it up, and yeah its crap and too expensive.

I have no issues with Steam. In fact, Steam and Direct2Drive.com is usually how I get my PC games now. I dont need a box as it will just sit on the shelf collecting dust anyway. Its been several years since I paid for a PC game at a retail store. Welcome to the digital world.

I got Steam with L4D2 and at first I thought it was some kind of scam. Since then, I've grown to actually like it. The games I download are downloaded quickly, and they're always up to date. I almost never buy anything at the regular price, I wait for everything to be on sale. I've seen and purchased games that I otherwise wouldn't have given a 2nd thought to buying before.

For me, it works and works well. It does exactly what it was intended to do I guess. Make me buy games and play them.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Well Steam and Direct2Drive.com is not really the same when it comes to prices though.

I bought Rift CE for 32 pounds, while at Steam exact same game cost 59,99 euro. And if you check stores steam is way overpriced.

i pretty much only buy games through steam now, if i have one complaint though, its that it should highlight games that need a secondary installation in order to run, like gta IV .. really good game, but dogged by problems created because of some idiotic need to install xbox live as well, i dont even have an xbox.. and with all the problems that particularly dodgy piece of software has caused, i will never buy another game that needs it. on the other hand if anyone knows of any hacks that allow you to bypass the xbox live thing. so you can play gta IV without it.. let me know. i got so annoyed at the thing that i uninstalled the game completely. image

I forgot to add that. Steam is definitely awesome if you are patient and watch for sales. You can find amazing (like 75% off deals or better) for great games, especially indi, that you might have missed. Also they sometimes have really good pre-order or if you have 3 friends, 4 pack deals.

Steam is a great service/tool, its nice to have all your games in one place, and constantly keeping games up to date without having to rummage arounnd various sites for patches.

Great for knowing what your friends are currently playing and with just 1 click can hop in right beside them.

And as already pointed out the offers that sometimes are very short are so worth keeping it running for when they pop up. seriously 80%/90% off full price games. My current game collection would have cost 5x as much purchased retail, I would take that saving anyday with just losing out on the box - Which I find having to jump through cd/dvds a pain to have to play.

Its nice to be able to purchase as gift for people too.

    Would reccomend to anyone.

Even at 75 % off majority of the games are cheaper in store.

The majority of the games I have bought on steam you couldn't find in a brick and mortar.

Maybe thats the case in your country. But in the States its actually the same or the opposite. Steams Rift CE is $59.99 and Gamestop Rift CE is 79.99.

Not to mention the gas you use up to drive to the store or if shipped then the shipping and handling fees. So digital, most of the time, at least in the last three years since thats when I really started going digital, its been cheaper.

Also the difference between Steam and Direct2drive.com for that product is only 5 cents.

Edit: I guess I should mention if you buy digital from gamestop for the Rift CE then its the same price as Steam and Direct2drive, give or take 5 cents.

I recently snagged King Arthur: The Roleplaying Wargame for £8.99 with all DLC.

Can't get any better than that, been really getting into steam. Get so many cheap sales, i feel like a criminal at times.

I have been buying games that are still 40-50 dollars in stores for as little as 5-10 bucks on Steam for at least the last two years. You very obviously don't use Steam and are talking out of an orifice that most people just sit on or crap out of.image

Agreed. Their sales around the holidays are the stuff of legend.

    Adding more agreement.

I'd love to see some examples of what patrik is talking about.  For me, it couldn't be further from the truth.  For example; I bought Fallout 3 GOTY recently for $22.50 during one of their sales - no tax, no shipping.  It's about the top end of what I was looking to pay given that I've been quite skeptical of the latest Fallout titles.  That was after occasionally checking in on eBay and a few other online PC vendors, and I've never seen it sell for less - even used.  Great example of a game I'd never known about without Steam is Mount & Blade.  I bought it for $5 in Jan. last year during a sale.  Shortly after buying it, I learned of M&B Warband and got free access to its beta for months.  I later snagged that for $7.50 (retailed for $30).

Regardless, even if you want you can still buy your games however you choose, and use or don't use steam.  Meanwhile, you're not really losing anything by checking out their site from time to time, and Steam has options to not be automatically run.  I don't see what's to be lost by checking it out.

Only flaw in steam i could mention, is their market strategy about the eve client retail...

A friend of mine, which is usually playing using the regular client, decided to buy the Steam version (don't remembre why, was stupid IMO). It was the Tyrannis Client, for les than 1€. And now, we're at Incursus Client. The Tyrannis steam shortcut he owns is launching the the incursus client, so, no problem this way. BUT, Steam is selling a new client, wich is labelled Incursus Client, for 1€ again.

    Wait... WHAT?

It's exactly the same client you'll launch, clicking tyrannis or Incursus shortcut, but if you just own the Tyrannis one, you'll get a lot of adds like "Upgrade NOW!!! New client!"... Seriously, WTF?

Their marketing team is sometimes a useless bunch of morons, but, usually, they provide a good enough service =)

I'm french, that's why I sometimes mis-use or mis-spell some words... Please don't blame me.

I am forced to use steam bcs i want to play Civ V.

I hate to be forced to be online when i want playing offlinegames.

The "Gamersgate" concept is much better for offline games.
Anytime able to download it from my account to any pc i want it to play on i dont need to be online after its installed.
    This is convenience!

Steam instead is the first piece of a chain to rule you...

Which doesn't always work, I serve overseas and after a while I always get a message 'this game is not ready to play offline' and I am prevented from playing (Civ V). I have now uninstalled the game and like the previous poster won't be relying on Steam to provide access to a game I HAVE BOUGHT!

Shame really because I really like the Civ franchise.

Well, it was updated before I left home and played fine for about 3 weeks before suddenly refusing to play in offline mode. I set Steam to offline mode prior to leaving (as per the instructions you refer to). Perhaps you'd like to illuminate me on what else I have to do? You might also include what I should do as and when Steam servers are 'unavailable' when at home...
