Because Star Wars is not about theme park, guiding you from one place to the next. Star Wars has always been about choosing your own destiny, your own path and yes it is more of a sandbox world. It is about you living in the world you built and reacting to the events that surround you. It isn't about go fetch/kill quests like the game will have. It is about the open world war between jedi and sith, not about instanced battlegrounds. Bioware has always been a favorite developer of mine but I think they are missing the boat on this one. I'm sure alot will try it out but for the long term I'm not convinced it will last.
Really?
I think the SW movies are rather railroaded. Luke never got that much choice after he decides to talk to Ben.
The SW IP actually fit themeparks like a glove.
If you want a good IP for a Sci fi sandbox you should look at Dune or Aasimov, they focus more on creating something.
The original trillogy is amusing and I loved it as a kid but I really need to hear why you think it is sandboxy, to me everything in it could have been in a very linear themepark.
But the SW IP is not about loot and items. Bioware might make the misstake there. Luke don't care about any loot, he never loots anything at all. He crafts his own lightsaber after getting the first as a quest reward from Obi wan. XP is fine, Luke gets plenty of it.
So as long as Bioware fous on the story it works fine. But if the jedis start looting everything and only want better gear they miss the point completely.
This hits a key point here... This game is NOT about Luke. Luke was should in no way be considered an archetypal example of a Jedi. His life as Jedi was nothing like the normal life of a jedi, trained from the time they were children. Not to mention the 3000 year difference. Luke may not have looted... but that in no way means that the Jedi of the past would not have done it.
So the post should have been, what is Star Wars to you. Or how would you have developed a SW game. Because there would be thousands of answers and they would all be correct to each person. As the two opposite views above.
Star Wars to me is and will always be the Movies I grew up on. I saw the first Movie at 10 and was hooked. But I have never read one book and will never read one. I am not looking for a SW world to live in. I am looking for a SW story I can participate in along with friends and others online. So for me, BW's SW is just what I want. And I could care less what you want OP. That is because it is all opinion.
The only way any of this will be settled is in 2 or 3 years. What will the sub total be for TOR? Everything else is just opinions for discussion. It is fun to argue and discuss what we like, but it changes nothing. Money and investers in these game is the only driving force. We can help shape a game as the community, but only to a point.
So thanks for sharing you opinion OP, it is always interesting to see everyones opinion. But would-a-could-a-should-a has no baring on what is or will be IMO.

What are you talking about? Star Wars can be anything, it is one of the few franchises that can really do anything!
Dont close your mind dude, this game will be like Dragon Age but in the future and the ability to have friends join you! If they do this right it can be the greatest game of all time. With fun gameplay, good PvP, good PvE and a GREAT storyline that involves your friends or you by yourself, not to mention the biggest budget ANY MMO has ever had, mix that with the greatest IP EVER this game (IF done right) will more than meet expectations.
Though Bioware's lack of online play knowledge could really hurt this game, consider that Blizzard at one time was new to the MMO scene as well. If this game goes well we could see games like Dragon Age Online and more companies will focus on storylines which will really bring the RPG part back to MMORPG.
The only way any of this will be settled is in 2 or 3 years. What will the sub total be for TOR? Everything else is just opinions for discussion. That is not exactly fair either. I think Bioware could have dune "The muppet show online" or "Pacman online" and still sold more games than SOE.
But I still say that thempark is closest to the movies as long as they are careful with looting and itemization.

I agree that the best fit is the themepark. As far as telling a BW story with VO, cutscenes and most importantly choice. And having thousands of options with gear, but yes, limiting the separation of top and bottom gear. As well as actually having a world to explore along with the story. Which I believe will be the case in TOR, but yet to be seen.
To me the themepark fits with the Movies I have watched many times over the past 30 plus years. But wanting a sandbox is fine, it just isn't based on the Movies. It is based on the SW universe and your imagination. Not what BW has done with Baldar's Gate, KOTOR, NWN, DA:O, ME1 & 2 and so on.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them? R.A.Salvatore

No one will know how this game will succeed or fail untill after 2 things happen: 1) The NDA gets lifted and Open Beta starts; and most importantly 2) The game gets RELEASED to the general public. And neither of those 2 things wont be for a VERY LONG TIME FROM NOW.

Neverwinter Nights was great in the toolset it included: all kinds of player created worldservers, it was great stuff, maybe the closest thing a computer game can get to the feeling of pen-and-paper D&D and dungeon mastering.
Neverwinter Nights servers weren't maybe MMORPG's but they surely were MORPG's, and then player made and run worlds. I wish there were more games like that, or that there had been a Neverwinter Nights 3 with a world creator toolset that was upgraded to 2011.

You may actually get NWN online with a creator toolset. Not like the original and made by the wrong company, but it is being worked on now. My favorite writter has book one out now, R A Salvatore. The User Generate Content is being developed now and just begining in STO. STO will become a great place to create and tell your own stories in the ST universe. Leading to the same player made stories created in NWN.

I know there are many players out there that don't like alts or replaying in a MMO. But the story, choice, quests and feel will be so different with each class in this game. If you actually care about the story that is.
Out of 16 advanced classes, only two will have the same class story arc. So there are 14 advanced classes you could play or 8 completely differenct stories you could play through. Seems like a lot of replayability to me. In fact you could play the Empire the first time and Republic the second and never see one quest that would be the same from level 1 to level cap.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them? R.A.Salvatore
Your logic is flawed. For one there are 8 classes with 8 diffrent class stories. So if u play a diffrent class u get a diffrent story. just for that. Then u have loads of planets theres like what 30 they have released at this point with there own planetary stories.
Take into account each time u play a character u make choices. So every choice u make changes the story so for every time u play a class aka jedi there are infinite possibilities on where the story goes. This isnt gonna be a game where boredome should set in from doing the same thing and experianceing the same thing over and over.
The story and choice inside the story willg ive u a way to roleplay your guy as well. That said i dont see myself becomign bored at all with the way this game is looking. Themepark mmo's for the most part arent a horrible replayability factor. i have played every class in wow and done same quests over and over and have yet to get bored.
i dont see this game becomeing a bore not with so many diffrent ways to play it and choice changing the story and how it goes for u.

So your saying it should be SWG, a game not doing so well at the moment and never has really did well.
in first expansion they should simply add new class, called lets say "useless" they would have no acces to ships, no quests, no pvp, only mob farming and crafting, neutral to all, living on one "closed" neutral planet, able to set what they made on both factions AH's via trade robot or something...
and all SWG vets would finally stop crying

Bioware has said many times that the MMO will be like Kotor, which was an awesome game. While I agree that there's many possible spins you could put on a Star Wars game, I do not agree that there is only one 'correct' way. I loves me some story and I can't wait to get my paws on this game.

Best SW game I've played is KOTOR and that isn't sandbox type. Its linear as hell but the story and gameplay was just epic. They are certainly not missing the boat in my opinion. Theme park works and so does sandbox. Star wars is not locked into one type.

This. Sooooooooo this!
your lack of knowledge of the things that SWG vets liked.. is quite demonstrably, zero... but a fool is as a fool does as they say.. and blaming the lack of enthusiasm for the game on people who played another game, years ago.. is something of a cop out.. Besides, i don't think that SW:TOR Is going to be a failure, i actually think it will do quite well, even if its not currently a game i would buy, its not impossible that at some time in the future it might become a game i would at least give a try.. until the game is actually released - whenever that may be.. its all pure speculation. WoW already did that.. and im not sure that it can happen again.. and even if that was possible.. i still think that the only games that can pull that off, are Fantasy games, SciFi ones, for whatever reason.. just don't seem to have the same draw as Fantasy games, IP or no. If anything i would expect BIoware to take a lesson from SWG in terms of sub numbers, if SWG had been allowed to grow naturally, its not impossible that it might have gained 500k players over several years.. Eve has 350k players and that game is classed as an outstanding success, As long as BIoware dont allow corporate greed to influence game direction then perhaps they can achieve what SWG failed to do.. so get over the hate for players who used to play a game that was.. in its own way, ground breaking, and if your going to make comments about them, at least try and make intelligent ones.
So TOR will fail since it's not open world sand box? Lol yeah SWG tried that and look how it went.
I think BW is sailing their own boat an so far they're doing pretty well.
On the contrary, SWG failed because they tried to turn a Sandbox game into a Themepark.. They introduced levels and a quest based xp system, SWG = Death by Themepark.. at least try and do a bit of research before making wildly inaccurate statements.

If they were doing so well they would not have changed it into a themepark.
Another case of SGB, or "Storyline-Gameplay-Blindness" detected?
Storyline-Gameplay-Blindness - A common misconception induced by too much exposure to SWTORS narated storyline aspect, leading people to jump to the conclusion that SWTOR will be a textbook linear themepark game without much player choice or freedom.
I prescribe a thorough study of features and game mechanics for a quick cure of this predicament in order to foster the realization that the personal storylines are a great way to fluff up the leveling proces but not all there is to this game.
So TOR will fail since it's not open world sand box? Lol yeah SWG tried that and look how it went.

No, you are wrong and please put down your rose-tinted glasses. SWG was already failing due to alot of things, tons of bugs, lack of content, bad mechanics all dev time went into endless balancing, some say also by introducing Jedi. I was right in the middle of it when they introduced the CU then the NGE so I know what I'm talking about. It doesn't matter if you feel it was the bestest game in the world the fact is it wasn't good enough for SOE.
It didn't fail because if the NGE, the NGE just drove away many of the people that like what it already was. The NGE was an attemt to "fix" SWG by introducing more themepark elements, and by "fix" I mean getting more subs. Don't even try to give me a story about the 350K subs pre-CU because that is just guesswork and only SOE knows what the numbers were, and they must have been bad to initiate the whole NGE process.
Personally I think they should have scrapped the old system and made a new sandbox.
lol this arguement just dosn't make sense to me.. Theres plenty of reasons why SWTOR "might" flop, but being a THEMEPARK is not one of them.. Traditionally themepark MMORPG's are WAY more successful then sandboxes.. And Star Wars had already been a sandbox game, and it failed, hard.
Free Bump for an amazing read... Yes we all feel this OP.. they have missed the Boat it has sailed and they are standing on the shore scratching their heads whondering what they did Wrong muahhaa..

Did any character really have a 'choice' in SW?
Luke really didn't. He had Obi-wan -> Yoda as he went from place to place to become a Jedi.
Han Solo, Leia, Chewy, the two robots all sort of went on this wild ride with Luke with a nice finale at the end.
Whether it fits the lore or not is not really relevant, to the general public; Star Wars = Luke and the gang

If they were doing so well they would not have changed it into a themepark.
In Bioware we trust!

My brand new bloggity blog.
True dat and I like the idea of sandbox games.
