it seems like it's main focus is former Wow players
The community is comprised of bitter ex-WoW players. They're likely not going to leave after beta, it's the perfect ingredient for a bad community.
The good that will come of this is that the WoW-community will likely improve when the complainers leave for Rift.
LOL, the game isn't even out yet and the comunity is bad, love that.
Who cares what the comunity is like, I play with people I enjoy playing with and ignore the rest
Once the game is pay to play the comunity will start to mature
Get a life
I hope your right but most of us have been here before, the game will start fairly strong but grow weak fast over several months without enough players to even complete certain tasks which then sets in frustration for the remaining guildies/ players...bla bla bla you know the rest...;)
No ... people are just tired of the status quo regardless if you can wrap your head around that fact or not.
I do not think that is a fact at all.
If it was, would WoW still have millions of subscribers? Would Rift be as popular and hyped?
Would SWTOR be as popular and hyped?
YOU may be tired of the status quo, many on these specific forums may be tired of the status quo, but there are millions of players who like games like WoW and Rift and LOTRO etc. etc. and they will keep playing them.
Don't get confused as to think a minority opinion is anything more then it is.
We live in a very fortunate time where there are dozens of quality titles available for MMO fans to enjoy. There is a lot of variety and a lot of competition.
I just think the "status quo haters" are just upset because their titles don't receive the same level of funding and support and as such polish and resources as the more mainstream titles. I call it the "hipster conundrum."
....and yet we know for a fact that MMOs are designed to psychologically push those addiction buttons that most gamers possess. So, it is more than possible that people are tired of the status quo, but are too addicted to quit and with no other real options, will continue to do so till something else fills that addictive need.
Rift is going to be another good game that fails because it copies things from every other game we have burned out on and keeps some of the bad stuff intact as well and like most others it fails to add anything new or even creative...
I find it to be more like conan and warhammer than warcraft as the world definately feels alive and epicly at war unlike warcraft but it just does not float my boat but i am an old and jaded mmo'er whom has played and burned on them all and would like something fresh and new for once instead of regurgitated gameplay...
Im not knocking the game i played the last 2 betas avidly and enjoyed the content to a certain point but it isnt worth the price to buy plus 15 a month as it brings nothing new and way to much yesteryears thinking in some content..
Im trying to hold out for GW2...
You ever wonder why no one has seen any GW2 gameplay other then a scripted Gigantic Dragon encounter at PAX? There has been 10x the amount of Developer Hype from GW2 compared to Rift and 99.9% of that hype from the GW2 developers has been talking about how innovative there game is but not showing any of it...
Compared to Rift who have put there game out for anyone who want's to try it, even Alpha servers are packed full of random players from beta interested enough to try end-game.
Untill i see a little more about GW2 i'm not going to hold my breath and feel sorry for the people that are willing to bypass a proven well made MMORPG in hopes that GW2 is there saving grace...
I learned a long time ago that waiting for a game with high hopes normally ends in disapointment...
Best Regards and Happy Hunting...

Yeah, and if you'd care to look, you'd find many videos where people actually play the game - some of them over an hour long. You could've played the game yourself if you'd gone to the gameshows.
"Proven" could be undersood as "been there done that" and "well-made" isn't anything new to fans of GW1. It also had one of the rare succesful launches in this genre unlike almost every other title.
People are justly hyped up. This isn't Mythic or Funcom we're talking about...

After reading this post, i begin to believe that blizzards real.ID wasn't such an bad idea.
If people would be forced to use their own names, many would stop with their hate-talk and flaming.
That is probably one of the best ideas had on the internet these last few years.
If internet are to be kept as free as it is, people have to be responsible, take responsability for what they say./Our freedom of speech is upheld by removing those forces that makes others not to be heard./ That accountability would also take care of alot of what the OP concerns are.
I remember reading that alot of the psychological stress from youth today comes because of internets and the need to have a gazillion of friends on facebook and other social media, be it MSN, Twitter.
With MMO's it is the opposite?
MMORPG's is a game where I play and have fun with people I don't really know, I consider them friends as far as it concerns the game. But as friends that solves psychic illness?
Sheesh... are you lot still going on? Don't you have any MMO's to play?
Just finished a weekend of RIFT and had a blast. I have to say there really wasn't that much crap in the chat box. Although I wasn't really paying attention tbh, was so much cool stuff going on everywhere, lots of players around jumping in and joining in with closing rifts all over the show. I was on an english RP-PvE server, maybe most asshats were on the PvP servers.
Tried out plenty of new combinations of souls to narrow down my final decision.
Looking forward to Thurs. night now... bring it on...
I am done with Rift. I really wanted to like the game, it looks great, Trion is putting great effort into it, but today is really the last nail in the coffin.
I know people say WOW has a bad community, and going into it's dungeon browser really shows you the scum of humanity. But this... no matter what little you ask or critizise, I haven't EVER seen such an amount of hate, harrasment, flaming and attack than in the Rift chat channels. Why is it so difficult to just discuss different opinions WITHOUT 30 people jumping at my throat? I just don't want to spent my limited lifetime in an environment with such amounts of hate and agression around me.
It just is the last straw on many issues. Boring "Kill 10 Goblin" quests all over, difficulty & respawn rates, recent rise of bugs and issues... but more than all this the community looks terrible to me. I was just saying my Ranger/Marksman was constantly dying in some places, and the sheer amount of mockery, hate and whatnot was just... depressing.
You know, I didnt want to say this, but I had my 40th birthday today, I feel it's like "ok I am officially not young anymore" and having more days behind me than ahead of me, I made one decision today: I WONT stay in places with mean and inpolite people. I am mortal, my time is limited and life is too precious to waste it in places with unfriendly people. So while in past years I was more willing to "fight over things", debate all over and taking all bad manners, I decided from today I will avoid such places.
Maybe you think about this one time.
well you will not have much places to go then.
and yes rift is generic, I play since beta 4 and i'm done, like I said in other topic too easy, boring mindless spam skills, and you don't even need to read the quests, some quests are good the rest not even worth.
Rift... Just like WAR,AOC,Darkfall. Is just another MMO trying to pull 40% of WoW's population into there game. By doing this they copy WoW's interface, quest design, raid design, and communication by a large extent. I'm glad that you cancelled your pre order, because it saved you a month or two of bordem before finally leaving the game.
I played the first two beta's and I was horribly disguisted at how they just copied WoW (Even more so than Alagon) while putting the same grindy quest "Kill 10 of these return" Every where you go. The rifts are fun at first. But when you do them 50 times and they start to spawn over your quest giver's it gets stupid annoying.
The community is also awful. People screaming "THIS GAME IS WOW 2.0, I LIKE WOW BETTER, THIS GAME IS EXACTLY THE SAME!!", etc, While not explaining any sort of quest or where to go with quest or where are the current rift spawns. I'll give this game a few months before going free to play. It might not end up in the trash like APB did but it surely wont succedd anywhere else.
you need to do the trial for EQ 1 and maybe some other games that have been around longer than wow and see how much wow copied from other games, theres nothing new under the sun. Its all been done before. If it aint broke dont fix it. Rift may have some parts from wow and other games but at least its polished, has customization options and better animations and armor.
In wow everyone and everything looks the same, In world of warcraft the trees and bushes are 2d meaning they are just 2 peace of paper folded in half then glued together at the folds.
lets compare shall we? I found the first one online note how they all look the same but different.
Just incase you dont know, the first picture is one from EQ 1 the MMO that really put MMOs on the map.

Most countries these days, particularily my own USA are getting very big into playing the nany state and trying to make sure everyone plays nice. You can be certain that if we don't police ourselves in some fashion they'll find a way not only to police us out here but take our money for doing so by calling is an essential public service. You're absolutely right that there needs to be accountability, parents need to be held financially responsible for the actions of their children. This happens and our games will be swept clean of the trash very quickly.

I started my mmo life with UO and then eq1. Those were challenging times but I curse Verant (EQ's original developer) for spawning so many clones in a gaming world now overly concerned with profits and sure things (not that there are sure things) that leads to the copying.
That said, I don't feel it's all been done. It's just that they don't try to be different that often mostly because of the audience they have to deal with. I fault the players of todays gaming world as they want every feature from past games they gave up on to exist in the next 'new' thing. There really not gamers anymore but 'newness' junkies and status seekers needing new games to conquer as fast as possible. Open ended games like UO with no levels to shoot through just don't have a chance these days with a few exceptions. Even those seem to be struggling to keep their subscribers with new and instant gratification tricks (like eve and hulkaggeddon). I am for now very happy with DCUO and have a lifetime sub with Lotro that I will continue to use when I feel the urge to play but I hold out little hope for something challenging and unique to come along.
edit notes: replaced hope with hold....appropriate though.
Considering the "beta" ends today, that the headstart begins in 3 days, and the main launch is 5 days after that - while it is definitely one of the most polished betas (heck, even more polished than games that have been out for years) - there are still some flaky things that need to be resolved. Have to figure that to an extent the headstart will basically be Beta8 - the paid beta - prior to the game going live.
Thats exactly right. Even at realease theres going to be some bugs. All games have them. Some more then others. I havent seen anything game breaking yet. A few class balance issues, but then again thats the norm in all games. Trion, has been doing a wonderful job fixing the bugs. Even taking the server down for 30 mins during beta to fix gameplay mechanics. Trion has been watching, listening, and fixing. In my 10 years or so beta testing I cant remember the last time a Developer was so active in getting there game fixed very fast and one that listens and responds to the community. Cudos to Trion.
Exactly. In all my time of playing these games(starting with UO) I've yet to see Dev's who reacted so quickly AND who didn't break other things in the process of fixing problems. They actually seem to be paying attention to what they are doing, and seem to listen to their beta testers. Thats almost unheard of. I'm quite looking forward to the head start.

GW2 isn't the only bigshot game coming out this year and why would I pay for something I already have.
What games are coming out this year?
The One True Game(tm) of course....^^ Its the same thing we've seen countless times before. As long as a game is just over the horizon, all too many people can project their hopes, dreams and expectations on to it. Its only when they get some experience with it, that they find that their One True Game(tm) is just another game. It may even be a good, enjoyable game, but it ceases to be the One True Game(tm) and they thus fix their sights on the next one... Then the next one... then the next one... We've seen this pattern repeated how many times before? GW2 and TOR will be no different.
I've long since grown tired of the eternal search for the One True Game(tm). If a game is fun, and enjoyable, thats enough for me. To me, Rift is fun and enjoyable. Its well polished, and thats enough.

No. Real ID was a VERY bad idea, for any one who understands privacy and security. Dealing with trolls and other such can be handled in other fashions. Blizzard simply doesn't wish to spend the money for enough professional CM''s to deal with the problem. Not to mention, they really do not care about the problem. Their main focus was to tie into the social net working sites like Face Book(other wise known as Face Palm). They want a nice big slice of that profitable pie.
I really like the community... It has been helpful and easy going in game. Yeah general chat get's a bit out of hand at time's, but if you just leave the level 1-9 chat it get's rid of most of the trolls, whiners, QQers, etc.
I really feel like the game is what you make of it. If you want to see all the negatives you will. If you choose to see the positive it will show itself.
Making sure I understand you here. You went into an open beta event, free of charge, with about 2 million people who have no tie or incentive to be nice as thier characters will all be wiped in 3 days. There is no accountability for anyone at all. Then you started a conversation, in a game, about its problems? and expected the people who are playing it and liking it to not jump on you for your negativety towards what they love?
Now I could see if this was you bringin up negative issues about something like this in a forums, but you took it to thier house man. What did you expect really? You go into a bar in the other teams town and start talkin smack about thier team when the game is going on and you might get your ass kicked, I'm just saying.
Now, I dont know for sure this is what you did true, your OP sure does sound like it though. And if thats the case I got no simpathy for ya really. But, if thats not what ya did, then yeah the community needs to shape up, and I think it will after launch because then people will have some accountability. All I can say for sure is I sat through some stuff like this myself, and it was started by a couple smart mouths in global chat tryin to talk down the home team in the home town bar, and they got what they deserved.
This sums up my thought exactly. I play WoW and enjoy it. I played the Rift beta events and enjoyed it even more. Pre-Order is made and I look forward to the early access.
I ignore the public chat and all the trolls there. And if people were rude against you I belive they might have cause to be that. And if you encouraged them even more by comments inflamed with critisism. Well what do you expect, a smiley face and a pat on the back ? So when you post your little QQ here on MMORPG do you do that to be constructive and start a debate or is it only to trhow some dirt on a game you will not play because you failed in the public chat ?
I agree with the op's comment's. I too am a mature player (50yrs old ) and I find the open chat channels purile and sometimes damn offesive, but as I like the actual game I will give it the 30 day free play to find a MATURE guild and then close all channel's except guild chat. That is my policy for all mmo's

I doubt that the released game will have the same type of discussions as in beta. I don't think that anybody will pay money to play Rift so as to fill the channels with how much better WoW this or WoW that talk. Or other nonsense in general, told by people who don't care at all about their server reputation.

I really hope this is the case m8, as I love the game as it is, so maybe some of these beta tester's are just user's, pre-odering just to play for free, then canceling the pre-order after the last beta test, that is totally sad
I actually bothered to read every single page of this thread, thanks for halving my IQ guys.
OP: everyones said it, you can't judge a community based on global in an open beta. Happy birthday... now stop being such a grouch.
{Mod edit}
Everyone else: Yes WoW crowd is here to stay in mmos, stop bitching, the positives far out way the negatives, investment in mmos has increased 20 fold from 10 years ago, we now have a huge selectoin of mmos, from sandboxes to simulators to themeparks, from f2p to p2p and everything in between. The genre we all love is in the mainstream, so what if you have to put up with the asshats from time to time, as many have said find a good guild, get a friends list going, and dont be afraid to get trigger happy with that ignore button.
Everyone takes this whole issue so seriously, its all a bit of fun at the end of the day, and if your not having any, move on. Honestly these forums should be full of ideas about how games should improve, or discussing cool ideas for mmos in the developers corner, or commenting on the latest news of the day, every time i see a thread like that pop up, it struggles to get a second page. Instead we get hater vs fanboy freads like this where everyone feels so self entitled to criticise everything that doesnt fit with their perfect vision of an mmo, its Trions money, they can do whatever the hell they want with it, and if its good, people will pay for it.
Just take a deep breath find and mmo and community/guild that you have fun in.

Don't hate the game, hate the players.
Current MMO: Aion
MMO Watch: Warhammer 40k Online, SWToR, GW2.
Played: Planetside, SWG, EQ, EQ2, L2, WoW, RFO, KAL, MxO, Voyage, RO,Vanguard,Tabula Rasa, Horizons, CoH/CoV,, Lotro, FFXI
First MMO: Everquest (Tunare Server, Ronin/Tide Guild)
Personally, I've found a guild and had some fun times just in beta... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d44zw21pnGw
I really feel like the game is what you make of it. If you want to see all the negatives you will. If you choose to see the positive it will show itself.
That is my policy for all mmo's
I doubt that the released game will have the same type of discussions as in beta. I don't think that anybody will pay money to play Rift so as to fill the channels with how much better WoW this or WoW that talk. Or other nonsense in general, told by people who don't care at all about their server reputation.

In beta 6 every VIP had 25 keys to give away, so basically pretty much anybody had access to a key. Beta 7 was wide open, no keys necessary.
I actually bothered to read every single page of this thread, thanks for halving my IQ guys.
OP: everyones said it, you can't judge a community based on global in an open beta. Happy birthday... now stop being such a grouch.
{Mod edit}
