I'd much rarther have a game worth playing than to make a werewolf-vampire-gnome-pixie-orc-dragon-goblin-troll-robot-alien, with 1million diffrent hair styles and beards, but i guess thats just me.
i love any kind of variety i can get in character customization, but considering each factions only has 3 races so far, and it's a new game, there is plenty room for more to be added.
i really don'y care for now because i love the Kalari and would rp less on anything else anyway, even if i had tons of options. i tend to just re-roll dark elves in whatever game i'm playing, or whatever i can make that looks similar.
i LOVE how EQ2 has tons of race options, but i never play on any but the dark elves (Hail, Neriak!), except for quick whims. only reason i bought WoW years back is because i wanted to make a night elf. so with Kalari, they already have me covered. i would however enjoy more hair options. someone above said more will be added at launch, and so on, and that made me very happy to hear.

there is no logic in the comment.
On the contrary, I too value game play and entertainment over eye candy. Eye chandy is nice, but my main focus is on game play. If a game is fun and well polished, thats all I'm really interested in.
its a smart move since WAR was very unbalance with Desttruction having all of the cool classes they had to make Orders OP and screw everything up. U cant balance population by making 1 side more op than the other, ppl will just get pissoff and leave.
Is it the lack of variety that is a concern and/or the "sameness" in being general humanoid races?
The majority of Fantasy MMOs actually focus on humanoid races as most players associate themselves most closely this way. I think more exotic races are great for "flavor", but I always play human/elf myself. I don't feel this is a significant issue for my enjoyment, and would consider it a nice-to-have part of a future expansion to include draconian-style races of comparable and expand the race selection.
The races are just for flavor. You are really only choosing Guardian or Defiant. There are only two starting zones (one for Guardian and one for Defiant) and it really makes no substative difference which race you play within either faction; just like it makes no difference whether you are male or female.
It would have been nice to have the first 20-25 levels for each race be unique but It isn't nearly as bad as AoC where every single char you made HAD to go thorugh 20 levels to get out of Tortage.
I guess they wanted to make sure that they didn't have any 'cool' looking races out of fear of population inbalances, but even a trifle originality wouldn't of gone astray, surely?
The humans you can make in Rift are also limited. No fat/skinny/tall/short humans You can't make a good human with dark skin, LOL, hell you can't make a bad human with dark skin either in Rift. Good is white to tan humans. Bad is white to hispanic dark. No black hair styles either. Guess its "NO BLACKS ALLOWED" in Rift. Just thought I'd point that out.
I have gotten very used to not responding to lies about games on this site because if I responded to every lie I saw I'd be responding all day.
This, however is not only a lie, it's downright slanderous.
First off, you can't create a human in Rift. If by "human" you are referring to Mathosians then, no, you can't make a black Mathosian. You can make a Hispanic-looking Mathosian though, contrary to your statement.
On the Defiant side you can make a Black Eth with Black hairstyles and I think they look quite good and look every bit as "human" as the Mathosian.
Now I'm not sure what you mean by good and bad, but as far as the lore goes the Guardians completely jacked up the world through blind devotion to the gods and the Defiant are doing everything they can to save it but I'm sure lore doesn't matter to you since it wouldn't fit neatly into the point you are lying -oh, sorry - trying to make.
Now I just want to thank you for stooping to a new low on these forums and trying to bash a game by race-baiting through out-and-out lies.
Have a nice day.

Thanks for doing this. Melogore should be summarily BANNED from the forums but he/she won't be. If the post had been slanted the other way you can rest assured that it would have been dealt with harshly and immediately.
Loving the game so far and I am very excited for early-start. That being said, I do agree we could use some more variety in the races. I am hoping they will add a lot of stuff like this as the game progresses. My thought is the cost/return isn't very high with a super large race variety and they focussed more on making what is there work. Time will tell though!
Such is the nature of Political Correctness. Its infected almost all aspects of modern western society. But seriously, I've played with the character creation system in Rift myself. I really couldn't tell what they had to complain about. Sure its more limited than some of the over the top types(such as the new one in EVE), but its more than sufficient for its purpose.
I've played the last few betas for Rift, and I can enjoy the game for what it is, but I will probably not be purchasing it. I guess the best word to describe what I felt was "clunky". The class system is incredible, so many options to choose from. The races.... meh. It would rate somewhere around "neutral" in my decision to purchase the game, wasn't dissapointed but wasn't impressed either.
Probably going to put it on my "games to keep an eye on" list, along with FFXIV. Until either of those games look appealing... more King's Bounty, Starcraft 2, and The Witcher!
The lore is in Rift makes it pretty easy to add in more races later on. There are like multiple planes of existence in Rift. Who's saying that EVERYTHING from the Plane of Water is evil, for instance. I think adding races will happen in time, and they wont have to do gymnastics with the lore like WoW did where we ended up with the space goats and alien orcs in BC.

I am curious just what they have planed expansion-wise. Higher levels sure that's pretty given, more lands I assume, additional "souls"? Suppose that's possible. Would definitely like to see some kind of player housing. Races yes, I agree they are kinda boring, so yes do something there.

funny, when i hear someone say clunky i think of EQ, DAoC and a few other "older" games. this game is one of the few you can truely move and fight at the same time. if you mean animation, that i cant comment on, thats your opinion, which your completely entitled to.
Actually, having played wow from beta, i do believe he is very much correct.
we'll see in 6 months when it's going F2P.
or see you in 6 months when the new content has been release just right when everyone needs it.
Imo no one will give a crap about Rifts in 6 mths time. So many MMO will be coming out . I would rather save my money and get a CE box on GW2 and SWTOR .

This might be true. On the other hand, I've subscribed to another MMO for 10 days, just to kill some time until Rift launches. If you're not that tight on money (and MMOs generally are not expensive at all as entertainment means), and if you've enjoyed yourself in beta, I see no need to wait just hoping that the two upcoming MMOs will be better.

LOL!... I'd not hold my breath in that regard... You might turn an interesting shade of blue... ^^ Rift is what WoW would have started out as, if it was launched in 2011, rather than 2004. Its a fun, polished game, and thats all I care about at this point. Only time will tell how things go.

Well, I plan on trying those as well. They both look like fun. But neither will launch for months and months(GW2 will be lucky to launch this year, given all of the delays). From what I've seen of Rift it will not have many problems attracting and retaining its own player base. But only time will tell.
Well, the cool races are saved for expansions of course. I bet we'll be seeing some kind of "rift touched" ones (think D&D planetouched). Wouldn't mind running around with a guy that has a flaming head.
Other than that, dwarves are always pure win. What the hell is up with their running animation though? The stiff outreaching hands make them look like bunnies. I also found my female high elf extremely cute.
The races seem fine to me, but I do not really get hung up on stuff like that. If I can make a toon I feel looks nice, then I'm happy Granted my main game over the years has been Anarchy Online, and basically you just choose from 4 different humanoid races (and premade faces). So this game has more variety than that :P
Though I do have to say I liked Ratonga from EQ2, but race was not a make or break for me then either.
My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.

The races are very bland and the male running animations are "clunky", but I do like the diversity of classes.

The races are pretty stupid, IMO. They were better off just sticking with humans only.

Actually, there was a guy complaining he could not make a white guy on the Eth side. So the argument was made both ways.
