I'm surprised at how many people are buying into the propaganda. I guess they want their government to hold their hand and severely restrict or flat out ban video games and online gaming.
Im just as suprised a how many people immediately interpret anything that is obvious & logical as "OMG we need government control!". No the government doesnt need to control it, people need to learn to control themselves. Unfortunately in some cases people are incapable of it for various reasons, and for those people there does need to be some sort of outside control.
If people were capable of easily controlling themselves we wouldnt have any form of crime, drugs, bad food, etc etc. Just look athe current state of most of the "civilized" world and the people who make up society. Half of them arent capable of thinking for themselves and need to rely on some idiot who they perceive as "role models" or "cool" to tell them what to do. Do you really expect those same people to control themselves & make wise decisions when allowed to do as they please.
I like how, according to posters in this thread, you have to be mentally ill in order to game for three days straight.
If you game for three days straight, yes, there is definitely something wrong with you.
...I smoke cigarretes, i know theyre killing me and the signs are obvious, but when you get that craving for a cigarette that craving/need usually overrides common sense. Its not even a simple matter of will. Addiction CHANGES your brain and the way it functions. Your mind and/or body actually become dependant on things and while, for example with cigs, you might light up that cig and after a few puffs thing "shit i need to quit smoking" because your body got what it wanted and is satisfied, when your body is craving it it doesnt matte rhow much you tell yourself you dont need/want it, your body demands it regardless otherwise you go into withdrawls. As a result you see the "just 1 more pack/drink/hit/bowl/shot" result because that is the easier & quicker way for you to get over that craving rather than actually suffering through the withdrawls. That 1 more turns into 5 more, 10 more, a hundred more. In most cases it doesnt stop until something overpowers that craving, such as a craving for something else, or a traumatic experience, or a loss of someone/something important to you, or for the lucky ones a sudden refusal of your mind/body to give into those cravings and a decision to simply quit.
Yes, I am quite familiar with addiction as I have worked in the medical field for years. I also used to smoke and actually was an alcoholic for a time. I understand how addiction works very well.
I have already said in this thread that this gamer obviously had an addictive personality. That is what was "wrong" with him.

I can agree with that. Maybe his family or friends needed to say something? Maybe the owner of the internet cafe? Hell they could even make a law that would hold the owner responsible and give them a reason to keep an eye on how long their customers are there for. The article in the OP is clearly pointing the finger at the games though. People like the one that died would find another escape IF that's what it was to him. You need to look at treating the root of the problem not the symptom.

Had we become so dependent that we actually need the government to regulate how we live our lives? If that's the case, how far should the regulation go? Someone dies because of his own ignorance be it from excessive gaming, not wearing a seatbelt, drugs OD...then we cry for more government control. The next thing we're probably going to get the government to enforce an excercise regime to deal with obesity. When something unfortunate happens, politician and activist will jump to conclusions to bring in government regulation just because a small minority of idiots can't regulate their own lives. People needs to start taking responsibility for their own action. In a harsh sense, if a person dies due to various reasons after gaming for three days, or for not wearing a seat belt, or from OD, he/she probably had it coming and deserves that.
Natural selection at its finest. Also a prime example of the ill effects of an apathetic society. Surely someone had noticed he'd been there for 3 days, but I doubt anyone tried to get him to take a break.
This doesn't bode well for gaming companies who want to rake in chinese gamers. News like this is encourages the government to crack down and eliminate gaming. I have a feeling Blizzard and other western MMO companies will have to pay through the nose in fees and taxes so they can continue their venture over there (I'm sure they are already but stories like this will only bump up the price).

China already has laws to restrict minors to 3 hours / day.
But not everyone abides by them and this is only enforced on kids.
Korea is also thinking of implementing a limit, FFXIV already had mechanics to slow down players.

Yeah, I knew they had some restrictions.
Just saying stories like this only encourages the governments to push their agendas.
I mean, I feel bad for the guy but stuff like this gets overblown. There are literally millions of gamers in the world but it takes one person like this to make gaming look like its some dangerous hobby.
This doesnt make any sense at all. In fact I would say this is retarded reporting. If you belieeve he died from gaming, you are in fact retarded. The human body can easilly go 3 days without food. The human brain will get rest one way or the other after 3 days.
The man died from somethign besides lack of food or sleep. Perhaps he was diabetic. He did not die from just staying up and not eating.
Exactly.
The guy had some sort of medical condition - diabetes 2, or required some other sort of medication, he might have even developed a deep bone thrombosis if he didn't get up and move around enough

My theme song.

Truely sad when stuff like this happens.

Collector's editions are scams.
It's an internet cafe, people literally sleep on their chair in those places. Many of them also have beds in the back to crash on.
