Rift is the Best Themepark MMO Out

TheFarseerTheFarseer Member Posts: 97

To me, this is unquestionable.

I've played pretty much every themepark MMO out there, and nothing really compares to what I've experienced in Rift in the past few days. The game is crazy good, seriously.

I want to share what happened today, but first look at this map:- (Bigger picture here.)

Every one of those purple swirly things is a Rift. These are public events that everyone joins in on and completes. They spawn the crossed swords, too.

Every one of the square things is a Foothold. This is where the Rift creatures have placed down (or conquered) footholds on wards etc. I'm not sure if they spawn the crossed swords, but I'm fairly certain they are.

Every one of the crossed swords is between 2 and 6 hard (sometimes elite, sometimes just difficult) mobs that run towards the nearest wardstone to capture it. These create footholds which spawn more of these.

This was the beginning of the "big" (there are smaller ones that come along more regularly and are easier to defeat) death invasion. By about halfway through the invasion, my map was literally covered in a sea of purple swords. People were holding off the sheer masses of undead converging on one of the objectives (the other was taken out fairly early on due to a lack of defence) whilst others did Rifts and killed super elites that were running around in order to power some giant cannon thing.

After a LONG time, we completed it. It was hard, it was fun and it actually kinda builds a sense of community and pride in your fellow players.

It was absolutely amazing, hectic and crazy. It's an example of what makes Rift the best themepark MMO to date, too.

If we'd've lost, I think we'd've had about thirty minutes of undead running rampant through the zone, slaughtering quest givers and basically fucking up playing for a bit. :p

This game is brilliant.

EDIT: By the by, Rift does amazing dynamic landscape change. When the event started the zone went seriously dark, I could barely see beyond about 100 meters around me. I could still see the rifts tearing open in the sky in the distance, though. It was AMAZING. I wish I could've got more pictures.

I actually thought the rifts were really boring. After doing a couple of them, everytime I saw a tear or rift I was like meh... let's go on with these boring quests I got.

Got kind of fed up with the game after one beta weekend.

A total of two starting zones for all factions is reason enough for me to not buy an MMORPG. Not to mention a lot of other reasons.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

For right now it is the best. People should try it for themselves, it really is alot of fun.

Yeah, it's the invasions that make the game, really. If they just had Rifts, dungeons, warfronts and quests I'd be like "screw you and your mildly interesting hidden places that reward exploration", but the invasions...

    Damn, the invasions are amazing.

Agreed.  I personally love the immersive aspect of the sky turning color and the roar of rifts around me on top of some wicked percussion music all driving you into a state of semi panic/adrenalin fueled combat and running around.

Just plain FUN.  Trion has also put the MULTIPLAYER back into MMORPG.  I don't think I grouped this much in any other MMORPG without having to wait untold minutes for people to get ready.  In Rift you just go with the flow and it rocks.

I played in Betas 1 - 5. After beta 5, I just couldn't do it anymore. The novelty of the soul system wore off. I realized rifts were nothing more than zerg-fests (really, they are terrible). I found myself going out of my way to avoid them.

When I played Rift, I had to take a smoke break every 20 minutes, because of how absolutely dull the game is. And, another thing, Rift is the only game that made me want to play WoW.

I purchased the comic books, I pre-ordered the CE. I was really excited about Rift. But after a few betas, it got old really fast.

I made it through all the beta weekends except the last two, but I agree with your assessment.  The game reminded me of Warhammer and Chronicles of Spellborn, both of which I quit playing due to chronic boredom, so.....I hear ya.

Everyone has different taste in games.  Some people really like RIFT, some....don't.  C'est la vie.

RIFT has 4 warfronts once you play them 100-200 times they will get boring. Then if you are on a pvp server you will have the elite gank groups make you emo rage log.

RIFT is nothing more than the new FOTM......I give it 1 month after starting to fill the forums with OMG the CC and pvp SUCKS. Because thats what I decided after beta 1-7 mmmk.

Hope you enjoy it tho if you do more power to you.

That RIFT war was huge! I had like 7 quest to finish but said screw them and joined in the war, now that was fun as hell. I am always alert in RIFT because so much happens so quickly. I mean here we have a new very active RIFT world but to a few people they claim they got bored and had to take a break, I wont never understand wth they are talking about.

How about they just stop making MMORPG

Even if an MMORPG come out polish it is still on the hate list, even tho being polish was the most talk about word on this site. People wanted polish and now we have it and they turn face, very odd community here.

Even TERA  with Next-gen combat is being trash.

So to all the game Dev's out there...  just stop making MMORPG, it is to the point no one enjoys them.

We all saw how WAR's PQ's were all empty after a month. Then the game nosedived.

I mean how are rifts different to WAR public quests?

I'm glad you're liking the game and all but the best Themepark on the market? Really?C'mon...

There's plenty other MMOs out there that I'd rather play.

Didn't like Rift myself, but I still hope it does at least reasonably well and turns a profit.  As for everyone that enjoys it, have fun!

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I don't like how they've changed mana management from a minor inconvenience in the open beta to a real pain in the ass at release.  Is this a preview of things to come from Hartsman as a throwback from his EverQuest days?

What is it with ex-everquest developers who always seem to exhibit this "punish mana based classes" mindset?

The most important fact to keep in mind is that the Rifts and Invasions aren't static like PQs were in WAR. They are dynamic, can happen anywhere at anytime and they are, afaik, scaled to fit the current population of the zone. This means that hopefully a zone will never be overrun (unless you fail!) and players be left without a chance to defend themselves.

In my own experience, I played beta 3,4, a little 5 and a little open beta.. Preordered after Beta 4 but had the feeling like the game wouldnt last for me. I dont know, something felt off. Now with the launch, I must say I am very impressed by Trions work. The increase in performance and framerate since beta and the fluid, fun and dynamic gameplay actually made me pull an all nighter. Something I havent done in quite a while, when it comes to MMOs. Kudos to Trion, I hope you keep up the good work!

Which means this game is indeed popular, almost all servers are full (at least in Europe). I am really loving this game, because it mixes static gameplay with dynamic elements. You can just run into an invasion when you turn in your quest. I've played 3 beta's and played 5 chars, but I never had the same experience again. The game is quite tiring also, so many things happen, that you really need to take a break at times.

Scale based on the number of people in the zone, I believe, and their level around that area.

IMO its an ok game, I'm playing it currently, and am enjoying somewhat.  The best themepark game still out there would have to be WoW.  I haven't played WoW in years, but I don't see this taking down the king of them all as far as best themepark MMO (Yes, best can be interpreted in a number of ways.  In this case I'm interpreting it as being the most popular, remaining the most popular, maintaining playerbase, and something else.)

Say what you will the have over 1 millionb registered accounts so someone beside you nay syaers really likes it, including me. TI was amazing seeing them up more servers as fast as they could all night...truely a responsive Dev team. The negative nellies are most likely just hard cores from other games with an axe to grind...their game can't match Rift so they have to try to run Rift down. But, Rift will be one of the best, hell, it already is.

That's Vanguard you're thinking of OP. Sorry, but Rift is just a WoW clone.

Almost all AAA MMOs break 1 million sales at launch. Age of Conan did, before it hardcore failed. And this isn't even sales, this is REGISTERED USERS who wanted a free beta.
