I would say they were micro-events but I don't agree that they have anything to do with being lazy.

I wonder if you ever considered that instead of being "just" events they also take the place of "lfg" for dungeons and running dungeons.

What rift has done is inverted the whole grinding dungeon mob "thing".

Instead of people spending times finding groups they just "happen". Instead of then going through a dungeon to kill mobs you go to a rift to kill mobs. They pop up fairly frequently so it's like one long dungeon run.

The thing is that they are very frenetic so the sense if urgency as well as fast paced play is kept up.

So insead of slogging through a dungeon (which Rift does have) you have instance groups for instant grind sessions that seem very fast paced and can be quite a bit of fun.

Which is really why events in other mmo's only happen once or twice a year with the gm's working out the storys for them and getting the players involved by changing how zones look during the event. These events go down in history as those you had to be there moments. Most of mine are from EQ, and I saw one in WoW that was more player run than gm but still. They are specail for what they are.  Little moments that happen once and never happen again but mark the game forever.

I remember one where two gm's were bored, got online and took the form of rival gods. Recruited all the low levels from the human and dark elf newbie zones, and had a little pvp war, winner took control of the losers city for a month. It was one of those fun little things. It happened once, for a while every low level got to lord it over the high levels that were excluded. Then it went back to normal and faded into history.

The rifts and invasions on the other hand happen about every 10 minutes, and even if they take a town nothing changes. Some high levels roll in and clean it out. You don't suddenly walk up on a village that was normal five minutes ago, now torn assunder by crawling vines with every merchant in it driven off to a camp outside of town. Then have to clear the town and rebuild it. If they had coded that to happen when a town fell, well I'd play that game.

Not playing rift so i don't know how polished it is at launch, but LoTRo was pretty much perfect at launch. I never ran into a single bug or issue. And the mini raids in the head start to get our crafting items were a blast. Twenty people to kill a normal level eighteen mob.

I played WOW from the beginning and I don't remember that event... was I on vacation?

And also...I tried lotro last year. Someone bought it for me. I could run in every direction and I could fight. But I couldn't talk to ppl...

played the beta and bought the game, its pretty damn good in my eyes, if its such a failure, then why is there 4 hour que times to get into servers, set aside server capacity.  there full for a reason, people that play it love it.

I tried Rift during open beta and it just wasn't for me I guess.  I think it has plenty of "polish" which seems to be what people consider its biggest strength and if I never played an MMO before I would probably think it was great.  But I just got bored very quickly during the beta:  story didn't suck me in at all, PVP seemed weak and mostly non-existent (maybe I didn't get far enough to see it develop), combat I thought was very slugish, and Rifts in my opinion were just random monster bashing.  I do like the character development options (soul choices) and I for one don't mind that there are only 4 arch-types of characters as I am not an altoholic:  I prefer to roll my main and stick with it to reach the top of its abilities/gear/achievements.

I think the next great MMO is out there somewhere, I can taste it.  But for me Rift just isn't it, and isn't enough to even spend the next 1-2 months in even unfortunately.  I really want a new MMO as nothing out there is working for me at the moment...

Guess I'm going to feed the trolls...

I find RIFT very entertaining, fun and polished. I was grouped with a new acquaintance earlier and at a time we both paused doing nothing but looking at the horizon. He had this quote like: "nice scenery, been a long time since I gaped at the surroundings in a MMO, nice treat."

You are free to bash this game, I do play it and I appreciate the dev work, a lot.

Lets be honest here, if you disliked the game enough to stop playing within the first 15 levels after buying it and it being new you aren't going to suddenly start liking it at the later levels. The game does not suddenly change and get a lot better, it is the same thing until at least the mid 30s. If you just sort of like it you might grow into it but for the people saying they got bored right away just quit and move on.

For anyone reading this who hasn't tried it, if you have played any of the other WoW/AION/WAR style MMOs out there and are sick of those don't bother trying, this is just a ripoff of all of those games. If you just want something new to try and don't mind a clone of what has already been made then this game is a good choice for you, it does the same thing in a semi different way with new content. If you want something new just look elsewhere and save your money though.

Considering WoW has over 2.5 million players in US i don't think it is bad thing follow the same formula. Even TOR and GW 2 are incoporating a lot of similar features.

Ok first of OP, its very polished so thats your first lie. SUper stable, everything is working, I have no broken quests, abilities work, no rubber banding, no lag, there are queues but thats to be expected as everyone is trying to play the game 24 seven eventially it will even out and be stable.

2nd the games graphics are fantastic at high settings if you dont like the art directin they took then thats something different. so lie number 2.

Now if you dont like fantasy settings and quests to level then RPGs are not for you. As for button mashing I thought WoW was the king of that. So if you like button mashing in WoW you will love rift becuase of the sheer posibilty of classes and stratgeus. I have never had more FUN playing a mage in my life.

Granted cataclysm upped the standard on how quests should be done. and most likely SWTOR will up it further.

But I will say this, Warhammer was buggy and filled with lag had no pve content and no type of crafting, and small instanced areas.  and just like today your only real option of leveling is RVR doing the exact same thing over and over.

Rift has tons of PVE quests the rift events, dungons, pvp battle grounds, and a far better crafting system then warhammer, in fact there crafting is very much like wow, which is not the best but by no strech is it the worst.

No way shape or form is rift comparable to warhammer. If warhammer had a large seemless world with more to do in it and it did not release in such crap state would of been better.

    A few things:

    1. If you are just in this game for PvE, you will be disappointed. The PvE isn't anything new. They improves upon WAR's public quest system (and when population settles down they'll be better), but that's about it.

    2. The graphics are actually very good and my average system handled them very well. I was really impressed with the detail and uniqueness of the terrain and structures and how smoothly my computer handled all the flashes and bangs.

    3. I'm an RPer, so I tend to have the mentality of "do it myself" by which I mean I try to make my own fun. Honestly, if you want some fun then you are going to have to go make it a little bit. If you don't like the mindlessness of rifts, get your own group together with guildmates and friends, then take on rifts that the zerg isn't focusing on. If you are bored waiting for warfronts, go do some duels or go out into the world and make some PvP happen. Hunting down lone questers is always fun :P

    4. For a fresh game right out of the gate...I have not encounter any bugs. It is so clean in that respect

Just some food for thought. I really think this is a game with potential, especially on the PvP front. The classes are fun and interesting, the combat is smooth, and world PvP has a point. Also, the whole rift idea lends itself to endless expansion.

As always there are people dissapointed in the game, that will happen. But opening night they started off with 17 servers and rapidly expanded to suppor the growing population, which is very impressive. The tragidy occurs as what you do at 14 will be the same at 50 ... But for me, that is what i like to do so its win there. I enjoy thist style of game so for me it is win win.

I hope Tera or GW2 is more your style. This game requires you to pay attention to your environment and use friendly crowd control and everything else you have at your disposal. Off tanking (including pets)  will be used everything and the kitchen sink is thrown at you and best be ready to adjust.

Don't kid yourself this is good because it simply isn't.

And don;t mention those annoying Rift things. The big tentacles annoyingly spawn every few minutes. You run to the area. Haven't a clue whats going on but button bash. Its simply a mess.

The world is small and linear. I gave up the grind at 14. Its forgettable. Never again will i believe the hype. Blizzard you are redeemed.

Unpolished?  You lose all credibility right there with your first word.  Whether you like the game or not the ONE thing the game has is Polish.  It's THE most polished MMO release of the 10 or so I've been involved in including WoW, DDO, WAR, DCUO, and LOTRO.

Beta was EASY to get into and it lasted a looooong time.  Sorry you bought the game and didn't like it but that's on you.

High fantasy, quest driven, mmos are not for everyone but if you liked WoW or LOTRO then this is definitely something to try.

The world is not small and linear.  The tutorial which takes you level 6-7 certainly is but after 20 it really opens up.

If you quit at 14 then you experienced about 10%, if that, of the content.

You are entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to disagree with you and point out why.

i disagre with the ops post 100%

This is one of the most polished mmo's ever released, even from the harshest (but fair) critical standpoint.

If you are honest and even from an outsider perspective one could only say this game is very well done, anything to the contrary is pure bs plain and simple.

weather you like it or not is another thing, but if you know games, and have watched the progression of mmo's in the last 13 years, you would already know.

you either like the game or you don't, but no one can say it is not one of the most well made polished mmos ever released .

To deny that is to be ignorant and have no idea about any previous mmos released to date.
