Everyone that is on the site at the moment couldn't have missed the rift ads running down the sides and bottom of the screen with a small rift movie and the followed by the tag "We're not in Azeroth anymore,"
Is rift setting itself up in direct competition with WoW now and do you feel it is a wise move on the part of the rift advertisers to do so? There is no way to read this advert other than a direct poke at Warcraft and to tell it's players that it is time to make a switch and you have got to be pretty confident you have something special to offer if you are going to set yourself up as the game to take WoW's player base away.
Thoughts?
It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.

You dont know this for sure.
Unless your the IRS no one has a clue what mmorpg game developers are making. Everything else is a guess, and most are making stuff up.
Everquest 2 is still pumping out high priced expansions, sucking people into the game as if it were new, yet very few are playing. This go to show that a lot of money can be made just by a release of a game or an expantion.
I get a kick out of people saying games have 200k subs when you log in use the Social panels and do a full search of how many players are really on, only to find a few hundred.
WoW seems to be the largest for now. Many are jumping off for Rift, then everyone will jump to GW2.
WoW going down hill ?...........The hate comes from burnout !
It's just clever marketing. And judging the amount of threads everywhere about it, it is working as intended.
They have a new game on their hands, it is polished, it has fresh graphics, it adds a public & random PVE feature and it is designed to feel very familiar to their target audience: people who are playing or have ever played WOW or similar cookie cutter fantasy mmorpgs.
So this cocky advertising campaign suits them perfect. At the same time that simple line of text avoids alienating those who have never touched WOW with a ten foot pole. Very clever.
There is no 'winner takes all' idea behind it, though. I doubt that Trion thinks they'll be able to drain WOW of the majority of western players. They just aim for a nice chunk and get a lot of attention.
My brand new bloggity blog.
as i said somwhere else.... Blizzard must come up with lots of new content for the next future expansion better than cata (post-cataclysm xpac), and i mean really lots of content (catalysm is good but too short) and advertise it with a tag stating "Welcome back from Telara"
Wasn't Dorothy trying to get back to Kansas?
Blizzard is already beginning to cause the game to lose alot of subscribers with the release of Cataclysm.WoW forums are full of goodbye posts etc. I myself have seen my ally raid guild pretty much die from people leaving for Rift.Rift is releasing at the perfect time as well and capturing alot of disgruntled players.I myself was stoked about what I saw in the Rift videos etc,but once I started playing in beta Rift to me was boring. My WoW acct. went out yesterday I did not like the direction the devs were going with wow,it was a hell of alot more like work than fun to me. I think the biggest downfall to wow right now was not the dungeon difficulty, but the class changes made in Cataclysm they absolutly SUCK now.
Good luck with that.
Everyone has been trying to do the same since WoW came out, with the only difference that Rift marketing team actually used an effective way to enphasize this.
Problem is that WoW is not done yet.
Of course there is the occasional burn out period, but WoW is the best Theme Park MMO out there.
Rift is just a distraction, the new kid on the block, but it's not going to worry Blizzard
Its the worst in my books.
WoW will not fall, just stop with this please. RIFT is the new great way to enjoy another type of content while taking a break from WoW! What I am saying is we have two worlds to enjoy now,
RIFT is the prince, WoW is the king I say RIFT is the prince, WoW is the king WoW WoW is the king RIFT RIFT is the prince.

Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
Let me say this:
World of Warcraft took a big risk to compete versus UO and Everquest, their expentations was to get a small foothold in the mmo world.
They said at that time that if they would get 500k subscriptions their game would be a massive succes.
And look how far they have come after 6 years of development, the average peak of an mmo is 2 years maybe 3 before subs and player base is dropping.
Now 6 years down the road cracks start to apear on the surface, around 60% of their best developers are working on a new project named Titan.
And they are paying the price for that disision, Ghostcrawler took over the lead from Kalgan and is doing alot of wrongs in the eye of the older wow population.
Myself played wow for 5 years and quited 3 weeks after Cataclysm as i coulnt stand the massive changes all of a sudden to the world and classes.
Many like me feels the same.
Wow was a great mmo, maybe the best one i have ever played in my mmo history.
Blizzard did a great job, perhaps they lost touch with the loyal player base and start listening to the younger player base in the hope to atract more players, time will tell if this was a good marketing.
Its time for a fresh air in the mmo market, Rift dint touched me like alot of players here, it aint my kind of mmo, iam not saying its a bad mmo, it looks good tbh.
For me GW2 will make or break my mmo carreer, if GW2 sucks (that just cant be, no way in hell) i quit mmo's.Blizzard did a fantastic job the last 14 years ? and i think Titan might realy be something that will blow away evry1 again like wow did.And lets hope they do, as long as there are a few triple A mmo creators we can keep doing what we have been doing for the last 10 or 15 years
Just stop the hating and bashing on each other and respect one's decision what they like.
Things like Rift is a wow killer or GW2 is a wow killer is just immature and is sounding very insecure.
Sorry for the typo mistakes English is not my native tongue
10 Million people disagree with you, but you are entitled to disagree.
I also made sure that I specified "Theme Park" since I do not rate WoW as one of the greatest MMORPG although I still play it (Have a look at my Sig)
What WoW does it does it pretty well, no other Theme Park can offer as nuch as it, plus Azeroth rocks IMO.
those are some crazy thought provoking issues you raise there buddy....
I didnt think it was a wise move.
"We're not in Azeroth anymore" annoys me more than anything. I would certainly hope we wouldnt be in another games world...
It would have made a lot more sense and been a much better slogan if the game was actually any different.
Beautiful game, stupid advertising.
Nice post Mothanos.

Warcraft is a great game and Cataclysm was a very good expansion the problem is people have played Warcraft for so long they have basically done everything they can in the game. It makes me laugh when people hate on Warcraft despite them playing it for over a year, there isn't many games that you would play for the length of time you would Warcraft. I have never played a game as much as I did World of Warcraft but after all these years I grew sick and tired of it and quit, it's still a brilliant game just been overplayed by alot of people. Also people like to hate on anything that becomes popular such as Apple, Music etc. Blizzard is a fantastic game developer and I won't say a bad word about them, they never ever make a bad game and with battlenet they will continue to produce high quality.
That being said I have played Rift and am currently 30, I don't think I will resub as I am burned out with this generic model of levelling. Rift brings nothing new to the table, people can say "Dynamic Rifts" etc but the core of the game is the same as any other thats come before it. I am annoyed with Trion because they haven't even tried to change the model I even found PQ's in Warhammer to be more fun than the rifts. I think this will be the last time I buy a generic MMO I really can't be doing it anymore, Rift is like a game that should of came out in 2007 not 2011 and people are making out that it is different when it clearly isn't. It won't be long when Rifts subs will plummet when people find out what a shallow game it is. As for their ad campaign I cringed when I seen it, it's really embarressing and they shouldn't fire petty jabs at their competitors it just shows a genuine lack of class.
majypoo, I think you mean WoW instead of warcraft, am I right?
Yea obviously I ain't talking about a 15+ year old RTS LOL :d
It's good marketing on Rift's side. Rift blows...just like WoW (no offense). However, given the large player base of WoW if Rift can manage to grab even 1/3 of that just to buy the game, test it, and dump it....they've made a nice chunk of change to put towards their next MMO.
MMO's today are in the trend of just being forced out like happy meals.
60% of them huh? of the ´best´ wow.. you must have some inside information. Not only do you know how many people are working on each project, but you also seem to have read their personel files and know which ones are the best ones.
GC took over when WOW had 9M subscribers, it now has 13M. And yes, in a lot of players eyes, GC is doing a lot of things wrong. Every time he balances a class, he does something wrong to the class he balanced. Players will always be upset about balancing changes..... if it is there class that is getting balanced. 4 years ago, there were about 12 specs that could raid... there were specs that were just flat out laughed at, and some that didn´t even get raid gear created for them to use. Right now 29 of the 30 specs can raid in WOW (sorry sub rogues). Every tank is viable, every healer can heal all the content.
How about the Classy achievments. By the time my guild had 12 lvl 85s, they had all 10 classes represented, because every class is viable now.
WOW hit new subscription records a few months before Cataclysm. All of that was under the changes made by GC and the devs. Kalgan needed to be replaced because his view that only a few people should see endgame content and only certain specs should be able to raid was outdated. When Kalgan was in charge, you were either a restro druid or you were not raiding... The only tank that could tank bosses were warrior tanks.. etc. The game is much more fun now that everyone can play the spec they want and still see content.
So seriously.. where did you get that 60% from? pulled it out of your butt? why not use 80% or 90%. Heck, why not say the entire dev team except for GC is now working on Titan.
More pills for you please.
It was just a joke!
13M? Do you have a source of that? My impression was that the latest news was about WoW having reached 12 million subs.

I would like to see how many subscribers they have at the moment.......
they topped at 12 millions, but i bet they don´t have that many now...not even close.
Actually, that depends on how the launch of Wotlk went. And no that is not a typo, Wotlk launched in China almost at the same time as CATA and frankly are a lot of Wow players living there.
They might have 13 million players, but it depends on how and who you count. They do not have 13M players paying 15 bucks a month but Chinese are people as well, even if I am not sure how much or often you should play to be counted as a subscriber (it is about 10cents for each hour).
So I would like to see how many players they have and where... Still, I don't see Rift taking Wow down. In combo with TOR and GW2 possibly but highly unlikely, Wow will have more than a million western players for the next few years, no matter what.
Rift felt jus like WoW to me, I wouldn't put any money on it being a "WoW Killer" just another WoW Clone.
A minimal of 1 hour per account is enough for it to be counted as a sub for that month. Now, of course when one plays there's obviously more hours that someone plays, but the bare minimum is one hour or one gaming session to be counted as a sub.
Blizzard announced the 12 milion subs the month after the WotlK release in China, if the increase in subs from there would have surpassed the 13 or even 12.5 million, my guess is that they would've announced that, at least in their quarterly conference meetings.
CATA could maybe increase the subs total, but so far I've seen no announcement about it, while the 12million subs one came right the month after WotLK release.

Not sure if it deliberatly trying to out-WoW Wow but it defiintely is trying to put it's name out there, which is fine. My father visited the east coast last week (for about a week) and he told me that he kept seeing commercial after commercial for it (he knew i bought it). The difference is all of the commercials were different; here at the West Coast (CA) it is always the one-same commercial, which I found interesting. I'm still shocked to even see commercials for it. With the exception of WoW there really is little-to-no commercials or MMO, save maybe for G4 channel. It Trion has the money to advertise like this then that is good: it gets the name out and more people might subscribe so more money for more content. I'm happy with RIFT, I enjoy it.
