Someone called Rift "WoW 2.0". I think many WoW-players ingame feel the same.
In my opinion Rift feels a bit like someone took WoW around Vanilla/BC and developed it further, put zone-wide evolved Public Events and Collections from EQ2 into it. There are from the start several NPC-faction, several currencies (money, planar, crafter, collector...), Achievements. The only thing missing or I didn´t find yet is Cooking and Fishing.
I think Blizzard was caught a bit with their pants down. Cataclysm was sold 5 million times, so one may have thought people ingame were happy and entertained. Now in the same time when Cataclysm added only 5 new levels, when the class trees become tighter and classes were nerfed, when another old instance or two were rehashed, Rift releases.
Today I read comments in the zonechat of Silverwood (name correct in english version?) like:
"WoW lost me when they nerfed my heal druid"
"I quit because they f.ed up the hunter"
"This game is better"
"How can they create such big raids without any lag?"
Yes, of course it has become a rule, after few months hyped MMOs will lose many subscriptions. But if this kind of Word of Mouth spreads around in the WoW Community, then couldn´t Rift go the other way and grow even further?
AoC hurt itself, and WoW just copied WARs Achievement system and added a Siege zone fast enough. Could it be a mistake Blizzard chose Phasing over Public Quests?
Have you convinced yourself that people didn't same the very same things when all these other games were released? I'm talking about games that actually brought something new to the table like flying combat and action combat.
Point it comes down to is why would people put down WoW when Rift appears to be capturing the same exact thing (Raid to get gear, gear to raid etc). Rift either has to do it substantially better, or hope that the public quests, I mean Rifts, are enough to keep people interested. Didn't work in WAR, we'll see if it works here.
BTW: Cleric is cleric...and paladin is a different class.... Mage is Mage not shadow cleric... When i mean a Mage healing...i mean a mage healing while doing Dps and like a main healer.... When i say mage in support role i mean in a SUPPORT ROLE,,,not just using 1 hability to CC..... When i say rogue tanking i mean...as main tank for whole instances... About dinamic events and invasions i better don´t even bother to answer you........
AoC hurt itself, and WoW just copied WARs Achievement system and added a Siege zone fast enough. Could it be a mistake Blizzard chose Phasing over Public Quests?
Probably not. The majority of players are not huge fans of Rifts the way they are now and the majority of WoW players seem to like phasing. Phasing is hardly the reason people are burned out on WoW.
GW2 makes Rift look pathetic and the star wars game completely outshines rift on the questing front so I just don't see Rift being much of a player into 2012, it released at the perfect time and is very functional, the game itself isn't very good but just releasing in a solid polished state when no other fantasy MMO has come out in ages has been enough to give it some life. They should enjoy what they have and realize it will be short lived.

The majority are not fans of Rifts in game? where did you get that from? I love the way the work in game,so does everyone at least in my guild and mates in game...
GW2 & SWOTOR are trully inspiring projects....but i won´t say that loud they will make anyother game look pathetic untill they come out and prove what paste are they made of. I have in mind Spore.... the biggest deception when it came out after all they promised.... so we have to be a little cautious when stating things like that...don´t u think?
About phasing in WoW...yes it is "cool" but is yet another way to "separate" online players from each other...and not making them work together like Public Quests do. So in my believe, yes it was a mistake.
WoW has become anti-social game because of all those changes in the wrong direction. people click a buttom...enter a dungeon with other players they dont even know...rush it..and leave without even saying a word. just another example.

nice list, here are my answers for RIFT btw~
1) Yeah it is polished 2) It might have enough content, hard to say 3) Don't see much long term appeal personally. 4) Not engaging at all, even more simplified bland GCD than most of these games 5) No immersion at all in the gameworld 6) pretty diverse options 7) More or less no character development 8) Not challenging at all
The hilarious bit is listening to the occassional clueless person announcing in general chat that WoW is the first MMO (not their first MMO, mind you, the first MMO). World is a small place when you're wearing blinders.

I never played EQ1. So for me wow didnt copy eq1 because i didnt experience it in eq1.
WoW also didnt copy EQ1 to the degree that Rift copied WoW. Not to say it didn't copy a lot of it but it was more like 40% instead of 80%.
No, WoW was more of an AC/AC2 copy than an EQ1 copy. Which of course makes it so hilarious to consider that people thought LOTRO was a WoW clone at the time, being a direct descendant of AC/AC2.

Yeah, EQ had a ton more features than WoW did. WoW had no features to call its own, just as Rift has no features to call its own. I hated playing WoW because it brought nothing new to the table, and Rift did the same thing.
And why do people keep saying every mmo is a WoW clone? ... because they are. Almost every AAA MMO of the last 5 years has been a shameless clone.

Nah, WoW is more like EQ than AC, that makes no sense at all and LOTRO is almost a complete WoW clone. Even more so than Rift is a WoW clone to be honest. AC and WoW actually have almost nothing n common which makes this comment so odd to me, I never played AC2 so cannot compare that one.

AC2 and WoW were a bit similar, but AC and WoW were nothing alike. And no, its clear AC2 wasn't copied, because that got shut down fast, why would you copy a dead game?
LotRO is a direct WoW clone. I played LotRo when it was still called Middle Earth Online. It was an entirely different(better) game. Months before launch they pushed the release date back, changed the name, and rejigged the whole thing to be a WoW clone. So yes, it was a WoW clone, not an AC clone. If it was a clone of AC it would have been that way the whole time.
If you like rift, play rift. Why? Its the same as WoW.
the phrase "its like wow" or "its a wow clone" is getting SOOO old. So are WoW clones, welcome to our world.
But in topic:
the title "rift COULD be the next big mmorpg" made me laugh.....it seems rift IS the next big mmo. Really? Cause the free month isn't out yet. Remember how AoC and all the other AAA MMOs collapsed after the first month. Rift hasn't even sold as many copies as Aion yet.
im impressed, the game have grown 111 SERVERS WORLDWIDE and at peak times all are on full, high and medium now
Not a single server that is low, folks we have the next wow competitor on our hands.
People just want working polished games at launch, i mean seriosuly is it too much to ask for of the develeopers?
Look at rift its grown so huge over the past weeks, im just amazed, its mind blowing.
Its damn successful way too successful.
IN FACT ALL THE future developers should look at rift as a case study. This is the result of working polished launch game with amazing developers who actually listens to its communities.
Look at the content of this post, then look at MANY others that do not justify a polished game what so ever,as EVERYONE is just talking about numbers of players.
Rift cannot compete in terms of quality and mob design with FFXI's Beseiged which is far superior to either Rifts or Invasions. So what else does the game offer for quality?
What i saw is Trion let themselves off the hook from creating a good class design, instead they just made everyone a Morphling.Yes i know that MANY do like this type of design, just so happens i don't,this definitely removes polish, because they didn't create any classes to polish, you choose whatever you want. This seems similar to FFFXI's sub class design, but it is not, clases in FFXI definitely show.
It is also quite sad that Trion thinks because one clicks the auto group during Rifts, that it actually has anything to do with grouping,EVERYONE is in the same group and it is still soloing and Rifts happen so quickly, there is nothign that lends it to grouping at all.
Trion also let themsleves off the hook with very small zones, they didn't have to polish a very high poly ,large zone like some other games do.
Also look at the starting areas, not much effort went into designing a nice elaborate city ,for example San Doria in FFXI or Freeport in Eq2.So again this shows they were more interested in speed of design than quality or really polishing a nice starting city.
Rifts are the game's selling point,i do like the touch of the tentacles and the texture spawn on the ground, but neither are difficult to polish for any average developer.A single texture with little colour to keep lag down, and the same tentacles in every Rift. Also when creating a cool idea in a game and Rifts are cool, you don't make them boring and mute by over doing them, and Trion has over done Rifts, they spawn along with Invasions far too often.
I also noticed the players in the game are smallish, again saves on polycount,i also did not find the quality of graphics to be very good at all,my player looked bland at best and for some reason i didn't really notice my armour or weapon at all, they seem mute to me.
Really if we are using numbers and just an over used term like "polish" does Rift really offer something that was hard to polish?Do numbers of players really matter to YOU the individual,ESPECIALLY if most are just soloing?I know if someone came to me and said "you should play this game because everyone else is and it is polished"i am quite sure i would laugh and say"yep based on that alone ,i am going right out and buying the game".Instead i tried it for myself,i saw a VERY average game design.
We NEED to see a lot better posts that go into detail about Rift, not just numbers and "polish" because based on polish alone FFXI blows the doors off of Rift, especially since it's design is far more complex, taking a lot more effort to polish.

You can discount polish all you want to, or what the definition of that is, but if you've played any of the AAA releases from the past 3 years, you know exactly what polish is.
It's the element that wasn't present in the past releases. Period.
The game doesn't crash.
The game has no game breaker bugs.
The quests aren't broken.
The servers are stable, ie, the game isn't a lagball.
The game design is what sells. Whether some like it here or not, WoW has defined to many people what a MMO is supposed to be.
Polished and full of content. There's a certain set of mechanics that have to be present. Those are all present in Rift @ release.
Sure, the game doesn't do anything groundbreaking. It's a nice evolutionary game, adding some stuff that hasn't really been present in other games, taking much from other games that have been successful.
The complaining that Rift is too much like the others is ridiculous. There have been many other "revolutionary" games. They've all failed either through TOO ambitious game design, ie, there's only so much time and $$ to get a game produced and released., OR, the game design itself was flawed to the point of being unplayable.
What was the final result? Buggy clients, unfinished games, untested servers, end games with no content @ all.
So, whether or not you appreciate that, I certainly do. Does Rift gain some points by being what all games should be @ release? Sure. Does that bother me? Not one bit.
Now that I've played most beta events and 2+weeks into release (including headstart), I'm 100% sure Rift will not be the "next big MMORPG". There's too much lacking, small cramped world, missing some basic functions (no guild banks???), quests are even more generic than similar theme parks, one single leveling line per side for all chars of all races, the world doesn't feel like a world, the cities don't feel like cities.
Rift is "cheap fun" (cheap in terms of quality and quantity) which is gonna last most MMO veterans a couple of months and then they will move to something else or back to their previous game.
Respect, walk, what did you say? Respect, walk Are you talkin' to me? Are you talkin' to me? - PANTERA at HELLFEST 2023
OP has to understand that pretty much every mainstream MMO the last few years has had fanboys declare it the "next WoW', only to watch them crash and burn in under a year. Having a name like "Riftfan" is like throwing some raw meat to a pack of hungry wolves, and doesn't help. There's actually very little hate in this thread considering these two factors...more like people being realistic and taking a "wait and see" approach. WAR and AoC had 700k+ subs the first month and packed servers, too.
I have no interest in Rift, as it just strikes me as another generic fantasy MMO, but I still follow it a bit to see what they do right and what they do wrong, to see if they did anything other devs can learn from, and to see if they learned anything from failures like AoC,WAR, and STO. Apparently they have. Pretty much all accounts say the game is fairly polished and works like a released piece of software should, which is sadly not the norm anymore. Maybe a successful launch like Rift's will stop or at least slow down the barely beta state launches we've seen in MMOs the last couple years...here's hoping!
I agree the word polish is being thrown around alot with respect to Rift.. and after having played a good amount since beta 5 and enjoying a dozen or more dungeon instances, I'd have to say I agree. While I have not played FFXI to compare it to, I have been through several beta's and new releases for MMO's.. AOC, VG, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, and Aion. With Rift, I am not experiencing buggy encounters, issues with zones or my character crashing, problems logging in, warped visuals, getting "stuck" in terrain or objects, quests that you can't complete for one reason or another, incomplete or lacking content once you hit 50, and lag ( lag being the biggest issue I have seen in so many games on release). .. all the. things that start building up my frustration meter. I have not seen any of these issues with Rift...all the others I have to some degree.. and these are only the basics of why I feel it's polished.
In addition - for me its the detail in the graphics and content - dynamic or otherwise, quests - yes there are so many I ended up deleting alot, the amount of full and finished content (4 types of Warfronts and nearly a dozen dungeon Instances that expand further upon progression) that are finished and fun, not to mention the rifts. Adding to this, all the side-step things you can do when you want some chill time such as Puzzles, Collection items, Achievements, and Professions/Crafting. There is also a large amount of comic value I have been seeing within quests and instance encounters that have me and my group laughing hard. Rift has paid attention to the details within the content.
As an adventurer, I tend to enjoy wandering at times, just to check out the scenery. One day as I was climbing a near unclimbable mountain... that took more than a few attempts to scale... upon reaching the summit, I see an Achievement pass accross my screen for "Mountainclimbing". (being so unexpected, it made me laugh) I then reach a desolate but beautiful green plateau with no one around... there I find a large Windmill with an artifact just out of reach. After fiddling a bit I find I can hop up the windbreakers of the Windmill to reap my artifact reward. Moving along further, I find some turrents that when interacted with, I find I can shoot missiles out towards the plains far below. Wandering this undiscovered plateau even further I find myself at the top of a waterfall that cascades down to a main city where I can see tons of players below... defending the city against an invasion. I leap off the waterfall that is nearly 300 feet down, expecting instant death- figured I'd at least enjoy the ride down. To my surpprise, I land in a deep pool of water- still alive and see an announcement that I have been given an achievment for "Cliff Diving". This is a small example of polish to me.. the Dev's thought beyond the standard path of what a player might do.. adding some fun and comedy to it.
Quests - While there are the standard go kill 10 mobs quests there are also as many that have the fun factor.. group quests where you are ported to kill elite mobs, turning yourself into a troll, or causing a stampede of cows.. many of them have some kind of comedic value to make them more fun. There are also the (Story) quests you can do that do not handhold as much and delve deeper into the Lore side of things.
Expert Dungeons at level 50 become much more dynamic (Fire pillars flaming up around you, forcing your group down a tunnel as a huge dragon flys in from above). They are more skill orientated with regards to player positioning, actions by certain classes - debuffs, cures ect. Many of the Expert Instances can be challenging and fun.
Expert Rifts (available via Auto Grouping) are the same thing. They are definately not "Solo" play, not if you want success with them. They do require coordination, positioning, planning... very similar to any regular raid.
Zones - do not seem small to me. They feel pretty standard in size and Rift requires you actually travel across the terrain versus the "see it once then easymode teleport past it forevermore". Rift requires more interaction with other players and the environment than any other game I have played. It guides you towards being more aware of what is happening around you, your zone... even the small city you happen to be in. Several late nights I joined a "Public Group/Raid" where we ran from Rift to Rift closing them down and gaining exp/loot.
There are varying Rifts for each zone and they are not all Tentacles(lol)... Death, Earth, Fire, Air, Water and Life Rifts all have different appearances. Either way the dynamic change of the environment around you (again bug free and graphically gorgeous) as you enter each type of Rift for the first timeis amazing to experience.
Players being smallish. This was something that intially I noticed also.. but I found that the UI scaling could be tweeked into making the view much more "life-like" in size. Art Style and colors are definately more earth-toned than other games such as Aion, WoW, AoC... but personally I like this difference. Graphics on Ultra settings make everything look incredible. There are tons of SS's out there now that show this.
Again, what makes Rift polished to me, is it's quality of design/graphics, the bug free - lag free quantity of finished content available at max level and upon release.. these are the basics I'd expect for a polished game and Rift offers even more.
Rift cannot compete in terms of quality and mob design with FFXI's Beseiged which is far superior to either Rifts or Invasions. So what else does the game offer for quality?
Can't comment on this as I've only played a little of FFXI until it completely bored me.

You don't like the soul design which is fine; you prefer static classes with static skills. A lot of people do not. The one thing I like about the class design in rift is I can chose what my char does and what abilities he learns. The whole pick a class and thats it design annoys the hell out of me simply because It's doesn't give freedom of choice.
It is also quite sad that Trion thinks because one clicks the auto group during Rifts, that it actually has anything to do with grouping,EVERYONE is in the same group and it is still soloing and Rifts happen so quickly, there is nothign that lends it to grouping at all.
That's not so much RIFTS problem as it is the people playing the game. The choic to get into a group and be a collective force is there. If people don't take advantage of it then that is their choic and not that of Trion's
Trion also let themsleves off the hook with very small zones, they didn't have to polish a very high poly ,large zone like some other games do.
It's a balancing act. If they had doubled the size of the world people would probably be complaining there is too much land and everyone is fragmented...some would rather have a smaller land mass with room to improve but people are around then have a large world to explore but no one there. This is another opinion thing.
Also look at the starting areas, not much effort went into designing a nice elaborate city ,for example San Doria in FFXI or Freeport in Eq2.So again this shows they were more interested in speed of design than quality or really polishing a nice starting city.
Really the only use for a city is where people go to sell, train, or auction. Most of the action happens outside a city which is where it should. The cities in my opinion fulfill their purpose and do what they were designed to do. be a main area to rest or do something quickly, not stand around all day and just stare
Yeah sometimes there are too many rifts I will give you that, but they are trying to create the feeling of a struggle, Defiant vs. Guardian vs. Air vs. water vs. fire vs. life vs. earth vs. death. One I think they do well. I mean look at WAR and how they said that City Raids are the pinnicle of end game and they just rarely happened. I think they may have gone a little too far with the rifts but AT LEAST they give something to do.
I also noticed the players in the game are smallish, again saves on polycount,i also did not find the quality of graphics to be very good at all,my player looked bland at best and for some reason i didn't really notice my armour or weapon at all, they seem mute to me.
Again opinion here. I think the graphics are fine but to each their own.

Here's the thing. They took the parts of WoW, WAR, and EQ2 and pushed them together and they did polish them. They blend together VERY well. It's almost the equivelent of taking a quilt and putting swatches onto it. They cut pieces from other games and sewed them together quite seemlessly (pun intended). Instead of throwing them together in one giant mess without explaining things and making something very ugly, they tuned individual things and explained them under the lore, piecing them together quite well. On top of that I have YET to crash, the servers are quite stable, I can have upwards of 80 people on screen with nothing done to my FPS, things flow smoothly, and it just fits...yeah I think that is polished. Not to mention their response time to problems is quite good and this is their first game (correct me If I'm wrong) out of this company.
We NEED to see a lot better posts that go into detail about Rift, not just numbers and "polish" because based on polish alone FFXI blows the doors off of Rift, especially since it's design is far more complex, taking a lot more effort to polish.
In your opinion...those are key words. If we're going by polish I find RIFT to be about 100 times better than FFXI. RIFT manages to keep me entertained which is something only UO has been able to do. So for me that says A LOT. I've played A LOT of MMO's from UO on, including FFXI, and I can say other than UO all the rest just do not have the entertainment value. SE proved they are good at story telling games with FFVI, FFIX and FFX. MMO's....mmmmmmmm, not so much...
Look at the content of this post, then look at MANY others that do not justify a polished game what so ever,as EVERYONE is just talking about numbers of players.

Everything you've posted is opinion, yet you demand people to post detail about Rift.
Well here's detail for you and it's all opinion because likes are well...opinion.
Graphics are superb. The water is some of the best in any MMO I have ever seen. Character models vary. Some looking meh to others looking fantastic. Rifts are varied as you level. The Zones are not small. They are actually nice size, but not the largest in any MMO you will find. What Rift does very well is use the space you're in. What I mean by that is the land is built for going under and above. Most of the zones aren't just a flat piece of farm land. Your accusations that Trion made things small to save on polygon count is rediculous.
The game has numbers if it's good. And the game is good. Basically your entire post is without merit.
Sigh. Rift could have been. It seems people are raging for something new. Not a new wow though, op / people are mistaken on that. Nevertheless I hope op / everyone enjoys their new Rift experience. However no matter how you look at it; it is a clone and the bigger they are…etc.
So now RIFT suddenly requires 12 Million subs on its currently only EU and US server to be competitive on the market?
THEN we can talk?
Shouldnt those other so much more successfull games first try to get themself even close to half of that in the EU and US?
Why do the standard of success or quality to be "decent" or "ok" atleast allways keep rising, while the games that are supposed to be superior or not able to be beaten cant even meet those themself , not even neccesarily in the same situation....
Those who've hated the game and continue to do so have lost. Just take solice in the fact that you were on the right side of MMO history. They will continue to argue against the game no matter what. 3 months will turn to 6 months, etc.
Oh and that 12 million subs isn't for EU and US. The vast majority of subs for WoW comes from the Asian market. Specifically, China.

EU and US WoW has about 5 million subs.
Yeah, yeah, like most games before Rift. Very impressive. WoW will shake and Rift will be #2. Let's archive this.

And here is my input:
http://www.mmorpg.com/disclaimers.cfm#conduct
1) Yeah it is polished
2) It might have enough content, hard to say
3) Don't see much long term appeal personally.
4) Not engaging at all, even more simplified bland GCD than most of these games
5) No immersion at all in the gameworld
6) pretty diverse options
7) More or less no character development
8) Not challenging at all
why do people say any mmo that comes out is a copy of wow ??.
did wow not copy from eq1, mmorpgs were going long before wow came about.
to me all wow is a solo version of eq1.
WoW was anti-social at release, you can't instance the majority of your game and not make it anti social.
The hilarious bit is listening to the occassional clueless person announcing in general chat that WoW is the first MMO (not their first MMO, mind you, the first MMO). World is a small place when you're wearing blinders.
so going to a new one..."seen this in WoW". "done this in WoW". "I hated this in WoW". "I liked this more in WoW".
AC and WoW actually have almost nothing n common which makes this comment so odd to me, I never played AC2 so cannot compare that one.
again this turns into a wow thread.
If you like wow, play wow.
If you like rift, play rift.
the phrase "its like wow" or "its a wow clone" is getting SOOO old.
But in topic:
the title "rift COULD be the next big mmorpg" made me laugh.....it seems rift IS the next big mmo.
imho anyways.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Respect, walk
Are you talkin' to me? Are you talkin' to me?

Everything you've posted is opinion, yet you demand people to post detail about Rift.
