Why is GW2 left out of the picture?

The way I see it is that Blizzard recognizes SWTOR as a competitor. But isn't GW2 up there as well? Is GW2 not a worthy competitor of WoW?

Why does it matter? Who cares what blizz thinks about gw2. All that matters is anet makes a solid mmorpg.

Blizzard won't see it coming until it's too late, then they get gobsmacked.

    Just wait and see ;)

Cataclysm: Run for the hills. It was just the beginning, after Guild Wars 2 has been out for a while it will turn into:

Cataclysm: Run for the hills while getting gobsmacked.

It will be a mass exodus worth watching. At least I think so.

The people and the friends that we have lost, and the dreams that have faded, never forget them~

SWTOR is the hulk, coming right at them.

GW2 is batman, finding his way around them.

They don't mind batman because they know he's just going to carve out his own way but they mind Hulk 'cos he's charging right at them.

    This is not a game.

Why do I constantly hear this same statement. Do people have that much time on their hands to play 2 mmo games? You have to sacrifice time for one to play the other, and most will play the one that is more fun and hell cheaper if given the opportunity. Also, GW2 is not f2p, it is b2p. You cannot access the servers at all if you don't pay, unlike f2p, which you just download and play. Big difference in f2p and b2p right there.

    BOOYAKA!

  • nomssnomss Member UncommonPosts: 1,468

Sure the game is B2P, but it still has massive amount of content. Tor has 8 different stories and GW2 has 5 different stories. GW2 also has massive VO as well.

I think Blizzard shout recognize GW2 as a competitor, or it will bit them in the rear end.

This has nothing to do with the competiveness of GW2.  GW2 is not going to bring any new players to MMO's, whereas SWTOR will likely do this on a fairly large scale.  There are many KOTOR, DA, and Mass Effect players who are big fans of BioWare, but have never made the step into the mmo world... this will be their first experience.  Ultimately it will allow SWTOR to gain a very large subscription base without being required to "steal" users from another MMO.

Blizzard being worried about GW2 is like being worried about Final Fantasy 13 or Dragon Age making them loose WoW subs... GW2 has no subscription fee and we will need to buy new boxes (expansions) for new content in GW2. Just like Final Fantasy 15/DA2.

    I disagree.

Considering that one of the biggest hurdles for players entering the MMO genre is the reality of a monthly subscription (whereby most are used to only having to pay the once for any game they play). What better game is there to introduce them then one that follows the same pricing structure that they are used to?

GW2 could be easily considered the gateway MMO for those that have so far avoided playing them.

    I agree with this^^^

  • whilanwhilan Member UncommonPosts: 3,472

While i would agree, When you compare Bioware to Anet in comparision to recognition, you can't really.  While Anet is big, it's not as big or has been around as long as Bioware has.  Plus Bioware tends to get most of the attention for being big and popular.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

Edit: I think the crux of the matter regarding Blizzards dismissal of GW2, is that simply ToR follows their business model and is a sci-fi game.

So it could easily be seen as a perfect partnership.

GW2 on the other hand is fantasy (competing setting) and follows a price model that I'm sure Activision execs only consider in their nightmares. Probably best they ignore it and hope it goes away. :)

If this were the case, then GW1 would already be doing it... and you're already forgetting about the millions of people who already play f2p games.  If these guys couldn't draw them, what on earth makes you think GW2 could do it?

SWTOR will be fishing from a relatively new pool of people.  GW2 is just one of MANY f2p fantasy mmo's.

Why are you even taking this seriously? This is nothing but PR, after the EA CEO made such claims that "They're going right at it. That they want leadership position here and that they are going to take a big chunk out of Blizzard's market." Blizzard were just retaliating by appearing to be the bigger man (company), by wishing them well. So I don't see why GW2 has anything to do with it. GW2 aren't gunning for for WoW like SW: TOR is... it is just developing into becoming the greatest MMO ever made.

I'm a TOR fan, but even I can see where GW2 could bring in new blood to the genre.  Not having a subscription will certainly be alluring to those single player gamers and not so traditional gamers into playing the game, maybe even appealing to those social gamers from sites like Yahoo, MSN and Facebook.  I don't think it's likely that they will draw in larger numbers of new gamers that Bioware can, especially since Bioware are in a similar position experienced by Blizzard before the release of World of Warcraft.

Guild wars 1 has maintained a very strong player base ,somewhere arround 5 million world wide last time I checked. But it hasn't affected WoW what so ever.I know several people who play WoW and GW1.And no offense to the SWToR fans .But I think its just a PR thing.Blizzard is Humanizing there selves to come out as the Humble Giant. But lets be real .Star Wars isn't a threat.I really don't think there will ever be a WoW killer. The term is a myth in its own.I am sure Star Wars will be a huge success as well as GW2.But I doubt it will have any major effect on WoW.

GW1 has sold 6 million copies (many for $10.00 or less).   Very few people are actually still playing it.

How do you know how many people are still playing it? If you have the numbers please show them. Don't just say something without showing proof and expect people to take it as fact.

There isn't that much difference in the speeches of some people of both companies, actually.

Mike O' Brien: "We don't intend to be number two this time. We certainly have our sights set on number one."

Still sounds like going for the WoW spot to me.

The 6.5 million quote refers to all the copies of the game plus expansions that have been sold. So, the total number of people who've bought GW throughout the years comes closer to 1.5-2 million.

Still a large number, but only a part of that number still plays GW frequently, of course.

I would rather you did it considering you are the person who claimed that very few people are actually still playing it.

When they say they are actually going after WoW come tell me. Other than that it just sounds like they are trying to make the best game they can. The quote is also from a european website and they do have different marketing styles across the pond.

"we dont intend to be number two this time"... hmmmm... If number one is WoW.... and they're going for number 1.... Gee guys, what's he getting at?

Unless he means they're shooting for #3, then he is obviously saying they're going after WoW.

A little common sense goes a long way.
