Funcom has not delivered a decent experience in almost a decade.
You obviously haven't played Dreamfall or The Longest Journey, because (most) people who played those will disagree with you. Even the ones who enjoyed AO or AoC despite their troubled launch and in the case of AoC rushed launch will disagree with you.
I have no reason to believe this will be any better, and from what I have seen, it is not a mindblowing piece of fiction.
It's just. A game.
Mass Effect 1 & 2 are just a game. FF7 was just a game. Baldur's Gate series were just games. Morrowind, Resident Evil 2, Alan Wake, Heavy Rain, Silent Hill 2, Starcraft, they're all 'just a game'. Still a lot of those games and others were as much great pieces of fiction as movies or books could be, and sometimes even better.
So I don't see your point. I think compared to the fiction and lore that's common for MMO's, that TSW ranks easily in the top 3 of best theme and setting, to a lot of people.
Funcom, really, needs more experience delivering popular triple AAA, cheap experiences before it successfully creates a new MMO. The genre has changed since Anahy.rc
? They have experience with AO and AoC, both solid MMO's no matter what the disillusioned, embittered crowd are saying.
Good luck to them, all the same. But I forsee this being AoC 2.
If it's of the quality level and design as an AoC, but then without a rushed launch due to publisher or financial reasons, then I foresee no problem with that.

Mass Effect 1 and 2, Baldur's Gate series , were not just games. They have a legacy. AoC was the biggest disappointment in history, and not just a bad launch. People simply do not enjoy the gameplay and ideas it brought to the table. Sure, some did, but not many.
Saying that AO and AoC are experience is like saying I can run a company that I've worked for 2 years with. They screwed up multiple times. They have not had a consistent record of producing quality products and HAVE consistently let me and many others know that they simply do not know what players want.
No, I haven't played Dreamfall or Longest Journey, sorry for missing those two games out of a billion other, more interesting and exciting titles, from other manufacturers.
I am by no means saying something like Bioware's TOR will be epic because they have such great experience with MMOs (they don't). I have more faith in Bioware since they actually have a record of producing great games. Funcom is just not...Fun.

Hyperbolic exaggeration doesn't really strengthen your arguments, it only shows emotional coloring and a subjectivity that borders on ignoring reality. There have been quite a lot of disappointments in decades of gaming, saying that AoC was the biggest disappointment in history just shows deep inexperience when it comes to games history or extreme bias.
People simply do not enjoy the gameplay and ideas it brought to the table. Sure, some did, but not many.
Nonsense. Most people didn't like the flawed launch or the disappointing of the high expectations they had, that's why the lashing out by some people; but aspects of the gameplay itself and the ideas it brought was liked by a lot of people. The more interesting questing at Tortage, the more visceral melee combat, the more adult and grittier 'low fantasy' approach and the variety of hybrid classes, there was enough to like.

It just shows that your experience with Funcom games is limited and your grievance purely limited to AoC (and possibly AO, who knows) if you don't even know that Dreamfall and The Longest Journey were also games made by them, with Ragnar Tornquist (now TSW game director) specifically.

Hyberbolic exaggeration? I'm simply cutting down the post so it doesn't rant on forever making the interjections formally correct. I consider my 13 years in Online Gaming and 21 years playing in general to be decent exposure enough thanks. The fact remains that when people mentioned ME1, ME2, or Baldur's Gate, it hits home. People know those games even if they didn't play them. Of course there have been other disappointments, I'm saying Funcom has a history of them. Maybe it is not a long history, but on a percentage basis it's getting in the 90s. Yes, exaggerating and generalizing, sorry, I could on the other hand list every game, give it a fail rating and provide the mean / standard deviation.

What?! Not sure if you have visited the AoC forums in a while or gone to other sites, but I have maybe heard 1 positive comment about the combat for every 5 comments against. 1 comment that it was great for every 3 that said they wouldn't even roll melee to avoid the terrible combo system. Tortage was great because they spent all of their budget developing it, and ignored the rest of the game.

A grievance doesn't exist. I take any release with a grain of salt. I have never been impressed by a Funcom release, and neither have a lot of people, from what I have read/experienced. Funcom has dipped their toes in the MMO genre and come out smelling like sewage. Is it not just as ignorant as you say I am, to imply that because Ragnar developped some good games, he will deliver something wonderful wiith TSW? Look at FFXIV.
Again, they do not have an impressive win streak like the Bioware's and Blizzard's of the world. I have no hope for the game.

Ahem lets just say that Funcom, or failcom as I call them really does not have a good track record. All one has to do is look at AOC and see the missing content between 30-50 where you had to go to the villas on a daily basis to grind. I'm sorry failcom has to do something impressive at this point.
AO was pretty awesome for the years I played it. It started bad but they turned it around completely in my opinion.
Agreed.
The game had a very rough launch. But in time, they polished it up, turned it around and it became easily one of the deepest and most interesting MMORPGs I've personally ever played.
The character development system alone - Nanos and Implants - has more depth to it than some MMOs I've played recently have in the entire game.
And that's not even getting into the myriad other aspects to the game.
Unfortunately, there are people who get hung up on a single period in time and refuse to acknowledge that time marches on.
I mean, AO is still going. They are still working on and improving it. People are still playing it. I was there for their last anniversary event, and it was amazing to see the community built up within, and outside the game. You don't see that in newer MMOs anymore.
In a time where some MMOs are nixed barely a year after their launch, if that... and still others are cancelled before they even get out the door.. That's saying something.
But again, some people are so dedicated to hating something, that they'll remain willfully ignorant and dismissive to anything and everything that challenges their position. To that end, I will predict here and now that even if PW were to launch smoothly - at least on par with Rift and LoTRO - those people will ignore that and conjure up some reason - however, ridiculous, to sa "See? Told you they'd fail!".

Nonsense. Sure, you'll always have a small but dedicated core of complainers that are a very vocal minority and if I only paid attention to those then I can find flaws in a lot of MMO's, if I had to believe the hard core of loud and vocal whiners on forums like here or official forums then I'd believe that WoW was utter rubbish as an MMO and based upon those complaints I'd never believe that WoW is the largest MMO around.
But I can go to sites where things are more balanced like metacritic and find enough things that are to be liked about AoC.
A grievance doesn't exist. I take any release with a grain of salt. I have never been impressed by a Funcom release, and neither have a lot of people, from what I have read/experienced.
The fact that you didn't even know that they released TLJ and Dreamfall and that you're only aware of AoC (and maybe AO) makes your statement untrustworthy: I think you only base it upon their game AoC, no other game of them. Maybe 2 if you were around with AO launch, which I doubt.
Funcom has dipped their toes in the MMO genre and come out smelling like sewage. Is it not just as ignorant as you say I am, to imply that because Ragnar developped some good games, he will deliver something wonderful wiith TSW? Look at FFXIV.
It smells like sewage indeed, the statement I mean. FFXIV has as much meaning as WoW, SWTOR, ArcheAge, GW and other MMO's.
Again, they do not have an impressive win streak like the Bioware's and Blizzard's of the world. I have no hope for the game.
Sure mate, TSW is not for you, that's evident. WoW and SWTOR is more to your taste.

Any content gaps were filled within 0.5-1 year, personally I found the villa leveling a lot less grind and a lot less needed than for example Aion post level 30.
To me, it sounds like some people are letting their disappointments bc of their expectations rule over objectivity. While I admit that taste in MMO games is personal and different from one person to another, I think AoC provides more fun and MMO enjoyment than a Vanguard, CO, Aion, DCUO and STO and to me equally as much fun as LotrO and WAR did or do.

Pretty much this.
I'm convinced that most of the people complaining about Funcom never even played AO a year after its launch and certainly never cared about TLJ or Dreamfall. I think most of those complainers except maybe a very few base their sole opinion regarding Funcom on AoC and the embitterment and disappointment they feel about that game in the short time that they gave it a try.

This TLJ came out 12 years ago and received pretty good reviews, Dreamfall did not do nearly as well with only mediocre reviews. Even your favorite site metacritic only gave it 75%.
I don't feel taking games 12 years old into account is really necessary. Funcom has not released an A game in over a decade.
How is it being dedicated to hating something if it is only decent after so long that it is irrelevent? I'm sure rear projection TVs are just a hoot nowadays, but I'm not going to use one.

Dreamfall got a 75% of reviewers but also an 87% of players.
If you want to include AO, a game 10 years old, to make your comment about FC's 'streak' make sense, then you should also include TLJ that's 12 years old and Dreamfall that's even younger.
Be honest, you're hating on FC purely because of AoC, but because you don't want it to sound petty you want to make it sound bigger than it really is. Why? There's no shame in admitting that you hate/dislike FC because of feeling fooled with AoC. But if you want to make it sound more meaningful by referring to FC's past, you should also include their other games.

When you say "they won't deliver" I can see you mean they won't deliver the features. Well what they are saying is not so far-fetched, it is quite possible for them to do it. Now, I think the real question is; will they do it well and will they do enough of it?

"Pretty good reviews"? Wow, you really do distort or ignore reality. Maverick was right.
TLJ received multiple Game of the Year awards, multiple Editor's Choice awards and a variety of other awards. It received high praise from gamers and industry alike. It's been called, more than once, one of the greatest games ever made. That's a bit more than "pretty good reviews".
Dreamfall didn't rate as highly as TLJ, but it was still received very well in the industry and by gamers.
I mean, criticism of FC in the MMO dept is certainly warranted.. they've made more than their share of mistakes. But they have managed to maintain and continue developing two MMOs that people are still playing to this day - one of them for almost a decade. That kind of longevity is not something to snort at, however much you or others might try to spin it otherwise.
Further, to try and downplay or dismiss the undeniable success of two other games, simply because you dislike the company behind it, is sheer intellectual dishonesty driven by bias. Nothing more.

So it has to be an 'A' game for you to acknowledge it as being a game at all, much less a good one? And if it's an 'A' game, it has to be more recent than 12 years. Do you hold these arbitrary standards with all developers? Or does FC get special treatment?

You're intent on dishing out criticism and dismissal and nothing else.

Agreed. The problem with AOC wasn´t so much the way the game played, it was the lies and arrogance from the management. Everyone in the world knew there were major issues with the game the first 3 months, but in all that time, nothing was ever fixed, or even admitted to... instead, all we got was hype about sales etc and every server set to ´medium´.
Funcom lost $25M from AOC in that first year. They had to write it off the books completely... and that was despite all the lying they did like only ever having an open beta for the first 20 levels which were vastly different than the rest of the game. They lied to get box sales and still lost money. Besides WOW, the mmorpg is pretty small... the amount of people who buy this game the first month is going to be very very small. Nobody is going to fall for the AOC con again.
The problem is the mgmt, not the designers. I don´t care who is designing the game, you still have the same ´businessmen´calling the shots.
I think you may be stuck in the past here.
The guy they had doing all the "happy happy, joy joy" spin is long gone. Gaute was his name, I believe.
They've since brought on a new team lead, they have acknowledged the game had issues and have worked to correct and improve it. How well they've done depends on the individual playing it; there is no "one size fits all" answer that applies to everyone, however much some might like to believe they have it.
AoC is still around, is still being played by people who are enjoying it, and has improved notably since its launch. I played it back then and I've played it more recently and I see a very big difference.
TSW is being led by a different management team than AoC was.
You're pre-judging a new game based on events that happened a long time ago, involving the shenanigans of a person who has long since left the picture.
Time has marched on, circumstances have changed, and still some people insist on remaining stuck in the past.
If it becomes verifiably apparent that the same thing is happening again with TSW, then criticism will be warranted as such. But to attempt to pre-criticize them for something that hasn't even gone into beta yet seems... well a tad absurd.

Alright, I wasn't aware of the game, it did well. That's fantastic. One game. One.
Dreamfall didn't rate as highly as TLJ, but it was still received very well in the industry and by gamers.
Games are received better than this every 2 months or so, if not monthly. It was nothing special.

Well, okay, let's be nice and kind then, Square is just doing great with FFXIV, it's been 7 months and people are still playing it!!! Warhammer is epic, it's been 3 years and people are still playing it! Evony isn't the best game, but give them credit, people are still playing it!
Further, to try and downplay or dismiss the undeniable success of two other games, simply because you dislike the company behind it, is sheer intellectual dishonesty driven by bias. Nothing more.
I don't call a 75% review success, or success enough to warrant fandom of a developer.
Sure, I have never played the first one and you and your peers will beat this fact to oblivion saying I have nooo backing what the hell do I know I've never played "Blah". But really, I think if the company hasn't released a winner in 12 years there is something going wrong.
I'm saying most of the planets in the solar system are cold. You are saying "WELL LOOK AT VENUS, IDIOT"!

I do. It does have to be an A game for me to acknowledge it as a driver for future success. It means they either A) really knew what they were doing, copied someone really well, or C) Both.
If Funcom continues on it's current course, TSW will be a B title at best, given it's recent accomplishments.
If Konami didn't release anything with a rave review since MGS 1, I would have no faith in the company, since they have continued success, they can include that game in their legacy.
Since FC has not had success in more than a decade, and I mean real success, then whatever they had they have lost and they have to start from scratch. So far, their scratches haven't breached the surface.
Going so far as to say I'm using 12 years as some sort of buffer because I'm so biased is just flaming, you damn well know I used that because the game is 12 years old, it was an example. Unfortunately, since FC hasn't released any other A titles, it's the only example.
How is it being dedicated to hating something if it is only decent after so long that it is irrelevent? I'm sure rear projection TVs are just a hoot nowadays, but I'm not going to use one.

Dismissing reality? I think we are both distorting reality hear, I have downplayed a game that was given rave reviews when computers had a gig of hard drive space, and you have praised it saying that because I have ignored that single title, I must know nothing of the gaming industry. Your overplaying, I'm underplaying, I think the company sucks, you think it's funtastic. I don't think we're going to find a middle ground.

I think it's clear that there''ll apparently be no middle ground since you're downplaying everything FC did.
While I don't care much for the company itself - a company must be doing something extraordinary for an extensive period of time to really be on my radar - it's objective common sense to acknowledge that TLJ and Dreamfall were far from fails, they were both good games and received as such, even if TLJ was received better than Dreamfall, Dreamfall was still a good game as a 75% critics review and 87% user review on metacritic show.
Even more, while AO and AoC both had disastrous launches, the MMO's in themselves are solid, good games, with if I look at the current crop of MMO's AoC easily ranking in the top 10 of current MMO's despite its start up flaws.
You try to downplay it because of your personal experiences with AoC and your general disposition towards Funcom, which is your right. Me, I try to stick closer to available facts and an objective view of them.

Based on the whole AoC thing I ignore anything FC has to say. Their constant spin, marketing and propaganda was particularly obnoxious considering how off the mark from the truth they were.
Still, if a game is good, I'll play it. But no way I'll touch it unless I get a free trial around 6 mos to a year after launch. FC doesn't get a single dollar until AFTER they prove to me the game is good.
This game will be let down by Funcoms rubbish engine they use for everything. The limitations on that means another MMO of instances and no real use of Dx11, just a few layered on features from it.
They dont have a good track record but i'll surely try the game when it will come out. I'm not letting my opinion or the opinion of someone else influence my decision to try a game. One of the best MMO i ever played was made by Funcom (Anarchy Online), i just hope they could put that amount of work and dedication in making this game as they did with AO.

It just shows that your experience with Funcom games is limited and your grievance purely limited to AoC (and possibly AO, who knows) if you don't even know that Dreamfall and The Longest Journey were also games made by them, with Ragnar Tornquist (now TSW game director) specifically.

You've made Maverick very happy and will now be on his Chrismass card list.

Lol
Nah, I find poking at people's flawed reasoning and pricking years' old grudge and grievance bubbles (for a game) actually more fun

When you say "they won't deliver" I can see you mean they won't deliver the features. Well what they are saying is not so far-fetched, it is quite possible for them to do it. Now, I think the real question is; will they do it well and will they do enough of it?
This is not a game.

We have faith in Ragnar, not Funcom. That's why people believe this game will be a success.
