Guild Wars 2: The Final Two

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In today's Guild Wars 2 column, MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager Garrett Fuller speculates a bit about what the final two classes will be. Arena.Net is playing these last two very close to the chest. Check out Garrett's thoughts and then let us know what you think the final two classes in Guild Wars 2 will be.

Looking at the Professions page on the Guild Wars 2 website, we are left with two shadows to speculate on. One clearly is Charr, the other looks like a human female, possibly Norn. With the Warrior, Guardian, Necromancer, Thief, Elementalist, and Ranger we have a lot of areas covered in the class department. Melee and ranged styles are well represented. There are pet classes in the Necromancer and Ranger as well as a defensive style melee class in the Guardian. So what do we have left in terms of game play styles?

It took me a little while to figure out what was meant, but when the article says 'One clearly is Skar', I think he meant to say 'charr'?

... well, technically the official Arenanet style guide says they don't capitalize the races (Just like you don't capitalize 'human'), but that's not as important as the fact I spent a while staring blankly at the screen and trying to figure out who Skar was. :)

edit:  So far as my guesses go, I find it hard to believe that Arenanet would forget their Mesmer profession.  That's probably a norn Mesmer (She's a little too tall to be a human, I think.  Everybody else is to scale.)

... and norn can already officially change into their totem forms, it's an elite skill that's tied to their race, so any profession (As long as it's Norn) can do it.

... and yeah, there's probably a class that can wield pistol/rifle, since Arenanet has hinted at it.  So something possibly technologically, rather than magically oriented.

A good read. I've seen a lot of speculations about an engineer class. Maybe that's a sign?

Skar ? I think you meant Charr. :) I think the next 2 classes will be...

    1. The Illusionist - One who is able to control the minds of others as well as make replicas of themselves. Atleast I am hoping.

    2. The Engineer/Technician - Engineer sounds alot better I think.

Skar? Seriously? And multiple times as well?

Why would a druid/shaman make sense when we already have a race of spiritual shapeshifters (Norn), a race of plant-people (Sylvari), a nature-oriented class (Ranger) and an elemental caster (Elementalist)?

From Anet's quotes we know that there will be one more returning profession from GW1 and we know it's not the Monk. We have however seen very mesmerish concept art and the mesmer is named in two books. In fact in the second book the human queen (which is still very much alive during GW2) is a very powerful mesmer which does all kinds of illusion and enchantment stuff.

I think it's likely to be a more pure melee dps class, as that seems to me to be the only thing that is missing. The ranger is very pet based and the thief is all about subterfuge. There's no in-your-face and toe-to-toe pummeler. That does look like a gun, now that he mentions it though.

I'd like to see some other sort of caster for the final class, the one represented by the female silhouette. The druid/shaman idea sounds plausible to me but it would have to be a much more damage based class than the much used healer. It could work.

Those two actually leave me quite excited. When might we get the next class?

Engineer, and mesmer are my 2 that I think they will be.

A little hard to take seriously when the Skar/charr mistake was made frequently enough to show that it wasn't a typo or mental hiccup.  Also, how can there be any speculation regarding the final two professions without mentioning the Mesmer?  Sorry if that comes off as bitchy Mesmerphile fanboism, but c'mon, this is just filler otherwise.

One of the remaining two professions is a mesmer, no question about it.

.... what's wrong with the Warrior?

Sure, he uses ranged weapons too, but he's all about physical damage.

Heck, his special profession ability is 'He hits harder and harder until you spend your hitting-people-in-the-face-harder gauge on a special attack for your weapon that will hurt even MORE.'

Awesome description of the adrenaline mechanic^^

As for the last 2 professions: one is obviously the Mesmer, given how often it was mentioned in the books, the concept art and so on.

The other one will most likely be a Gunner/Engineer, but I hope ANet will find a better name for the profession as I like neither of the 2 names

I don't know about the skar thing, I don't know much about the lore, figured it was one of the races of the Charr maybe.  I'm dissapointed at the apparent lack of research you did though, it's been stated everywhere for the Norn that they can shapeshift. I understand that you were talking about a profession, but it still seems like you're kinda lacking depth of knowledge here.  It would be kinda pointless to add a shapeshifting profession while having a race ability of the same.

I am intrigued by the engineering/steampunk style mentioned, while I'm not a fan of steampunk, it would add some variety in a bland AAA genre.

I was hoping for a shapeshifting profession similar to a druid since then the game would have everything I could want. The njorn can shapeshift but it isn't really the same thing. At least they have the charr though so that's good enough. :p

I thought they said something about one class being something people who loved the mesmer would really love.

As to the char, no idea.

The last scholar is obviosly mesmer. Its GuildWars unque profession they aren't going to drop it.  The human queen is a mesmer according to Ede of Destiny  And Arenanet has said that they released the easier to play professions first,  Guardian and Thief are the first of the more complex professions. Mesmer definetely fits as a more complex profession.

Arenanet said at one time that there was at least once professsion that uses bows but not guns (ranger),  at least one that uses both (warrior & thief) and at least one that uses guns bot not bows. That last one has yet to be revealed.  I don't see how an engineer is useful in combat though.

They said that about the monk. Not sure if they said that about the mesmer. What they did say though is that there will be a returning profession from GW and another one that would have similar elements from a GW profession. This was said before the Guardian reveal. The Thief brought some elements from the Assassin profession so that coincides with that. We still have a GW profession that is going to be back. From all of the information we have including the novels and concept art I think it's pretty darn obvious that the returning profession is the Mesmer.

When we look at the halls of monument we see there is a rifle so far no class can use one.

Warriors can wield rifles. But they're the only one, just like there is only one profession which wields pistols, the thief. This is one of the reasons why people speculate that there is one profession to be revealed which wields both rifles and pistols. Another reason is that Anet said there will be one profession which wields guns but not bows. Until now all professions which can wield guns (warriors and thiefs) can also wield bows.

"If anything it would be awesome to have a shape changing profession in the game and allow for Norn to change into their totems."

LoL they already can do that regardless their profession. Its their racial skill. but a good read though.

I'd say any Mesmer that appears will be slightly changed, and I do mean slightly - with a bit of a focus of Melee And Ranged combat in addition to spell casting... Nothing screams "cool" more than a Pistol wielding Illusionist, hell a Rifle wielding Illusionist!

The videos have shown golems such as those used by the Asura. Could the use of golems be a class?

    That is a racial skill.

Ok, thanks. I've been impressed with the classes so far and I'm sure the next two classes will be cool too.

Im not so sure that looks like a gun to me, i dont know why but when i look at it i see katana...probably just me though. Its the way the hand is holding it that is making me think that. the other class is definitely a mesmer though, but the other one is up in the air.
