You both omitted to mention a crucial bit of information, ie, how big is your monitor or in other words, in what resolution you're trying to run the game. A few inches bigger or a resolution or two higher has a big impact on frame rate.
thats funny, I have a amd dual core with 4 gigs of ram, and an nvidia 9800, game runs fine for me, i run it on high and only hasve to turn it down for being in main cities.
Weird I'm playing it on an identical card with a pentium dual core 2.8 and 3 gb ram and it really struggles on the lower settings even in the citys .
Precisely, that just makes me wonder if it really matters. Afterall, every game has to struggle with the same resolution, unless you switch screens all the time. So we maybe could take that out of the equation. No? (Honest though, I'm not an techie)

My post was referring to two people having similar systems but getting different kind of framerate/experience. They omitted one factor regarding those systems, how big was the size of their monitor or how detailed their resolution is. The higher the resolution the bigger the strain to the system.
Also the strain the resolution puts into a system is not a linear factor. In other words, if you double the resolution the strain your system suffers is a lot more than twice as big.
I've seen this many times before. I too have way beyond capable computer to run games like Rift or better. The problem has to be with the character models or effects, tho i've tried turn effects off but it did not help. For me this huge drop in fps happens in cities and raids mainly. Couple groups are fine but when it comes to raid groups and cities i might get around 24ish fps from 50-70... Lotro had this same thing, Vanguard had the same thing... Warhammer had it, and rift has the same engine so. There lies the problem.

You realise that Rift share the same front end engine with Warhammer only right? Not the other games. And I'm saying front end because the back end (network code etc.) are nothing similar to WAR, giving a smooth experience compared to the abilities lagging as witnessed when playing big battles in WAR.

Ah yeah, there's a diffrence there yes. But just for an example.

Again a thread about Rift's bad fps in which people claim to run it perfectly fluid on their 3-4yr old machines without stating their video resolution.
I can as well post all day about my 65fps on a HD3850....@ 1024x768.
So again: your statement means NOTHING without posting you video resolution before you claim that the game never drops below say 25fps. I said it some time ago: This is like a friend of mine who was bragging about WoW running "all maxed out incl. shadows never below 60fps in crowded Dalaran!!" on his Hd4850 mobilty - when i visited him he played in beyond blurry, non native 1280x960 on his 17" because "well...otherwise it's choppy".
And then as usual the folks comparing PAL/NTSC-TV to a video game's engine, hence stating that "one's eye can't tell the difference above 25fps". Guys, GET A CLUE and educate yourself before shouting this same crap allover every fps-discussion.
So's ye know, my screen is 2560X1600.
I play all my games with the resolution maxed. As I also said I run Rift with everything but supersampling.
Though I may be an anomaly.

And that applies to any game, not just Rift.

The drivers are all updated etc .

Will I got my key yesterday for the trial and playing the game great on ultra with my ati 4850. Haven't run into any problems.
This game rocks, after the contest tomorrow for the game, if I don't get one I will need to borrow some cash from son to go buy it.
