I want to know is this a game I will be playing for months on end or will I end up dumping it like yesterday's trash? I've had too many bad MMO experiences bred from substantial hype, I must know if this game is genuinely good as they say it is. Should I buy this game and is it worth it?

What's your mmo/gaming background?
Totally a matter of opinion but yes, its worth it.
no, it is not worth it. This game should not be supported, this game takes genere backwards instead of forward.

If you don't care for the mechanics of WoW then you won't like RIFT. They play basically the same way.
If you don't care for the mechanics of <Enter Random MMO Name HEre> then you won't like RIFT. They play basically the same way.
If your a game hopper, and dimp games like that and well you will be dumping this anyways in 2 months so no its not
I'm tired of people trashing it because it didn't do anything new. I enjoy the game a lot. I'm level 50 and still having fun. I've been playing since head start and have come nowhere near close to losing intirest in it yet. They are adding patches quite often with content and fixes. I say it is completely worth it.
The game is fun for about 30 days. So to me it was worth the price I paid for it. But. alas, I am now max level and bored to tears with it. Max level you say, burned past all the content you say. Ha! I say. Its not hard. And thus, a casual gamer in this genre has done so.
Not doing anything new? So... all games have such open class options? All games are based on exciting dynamic content? All games encourage impromptu grouping like this? All developers listen to players and respond quickly? All developers release polished, completed content?
Yup, nothing new going on here.
Actually I specifically meant WoW. Played both games. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of games out there that play differently than the two but there were too many similarities to WoW for me to stay interested in RIFT.
This game has something for everyone.
PvP
It's good and you can level up and get special gears and even customize your character for PvP. There is world PvP and warfront PvP and both are alot of fun.
PvE
There are about 10 dungeons to run thru as you level up and quests galore all the way to the top with ample rewards. There are also Rifts and Rift invasions to level up with.
Crafting
There is plenty of crafting types and you can pick any 3 and level up with them to max
Endgame
Once you hit level cap you can start all 10 dungeons in expert mode and once you get good gears from there you can do raids and Rift raids. PvP also turns up the volume at endgame as well with further character and gear customization to dial in your abilities. There is alot of gear you can unlock via factions in the game as well and this all adds to the life of the game.
Replayability
This is where things are not as good. There are only 2 sides so you will end up doing the same questlines if you choose your side for another character or you can role a character on the other side and do quests there....
The game is polished and fun and you will find there really is no reason not to try it unless you are A.D.D. in which case sometimes jumping up and down for an hour might be more suitable.
Wait, you want us to tap into your mind and determine if Rift suits your subjective MMO preferences? We don't have that technology yet. For now your only solution is to try the game and see if YOU like. As for others, some do, some don't.
Yes, it is worth it for the meantime. Play until SW:TOR or GW2 comes out. After that, skip it.
I only got to play the beta a couple weeks before it was released but based on my limitied experience the game mechanics are basically like WoW or Warhammer, so that might give you an idea of whether you would enjoy it or not. As far as I could tell where it mostly differs is flashier graphics and a more expansive character development system, maybe the WoW talent trees on steroids would be a good analogy. Personally I was very quickly bored with it but a lot of people seem to like it.
Why do people keep asking if it's worth it? Like it's life and death? Is it worth what? The money?
Here is how I see it:
Rift- 50$ for at least a good month or two of entertainment.
A Saturday night out :
$25 Bottle of Vodka
$5 Cover to get into the club
$20 (At least) Drinks at the bar
$10 Cab ride home
But honestly, I think if you are a taditional MMO player who likes a fantasy setting and doesn't mind a linear track, you will get a good couple of months at least out of Rift. Buy it, try it.
"God, please help us sinful children of Ivalice.."
I still find it amusing when people call what Rift presents as "dynamic" content.
It's fun for a while, but dynamic?
I had my fun with Rift, although I don't care for the soul system changes. Or "balancing" as its called.
.. But in a good way.
I'd say hold off for a bit. They're still trying to find their initial balance and are making heavy-handed changes that cause some souls to be nearly useless. Give it a few months, or you'll end up finding your favorite spec nerfed into oblivion; or even find it so powered up that it takes any challenge out of the game. I've been a victim of both moves, and neither was pleasant.
Rift is a very solid MMO. I recommend it.

I dont usually comment on rift threads, But as a beta participate i will say this.
1. Its a very well manufactured game. (although i have seen bugs)
2. I dont believe it will keep peoples interests longer than 3 months. (for the simple fact of, Why? ive done this type of stuff before)
TSW - AoC - Aion - WOW - EVE - Fallen Earth - Co - Rift - || XNA C# Java Development
Some people can never be pleased.
The following statement is false
The previous statement is true
Based on your comments and an intelligent interpretation of "worth it", I'm going to say no it is not worth it for you.
I'll assume by "worth it" you are referring to its worth in terms of time spent and not money spent. Obviously, money-wise, MMOs remain a pretty good deal. Though, I will qualify the standard interpretation of a MMO's money-worth because I think 2 hours of a movie (or a night out on the town) is of greater value than a day or more's worth of MMO, but I'm not one of those people who enjoys burning time because I've got nothing better to do. You might be, though, so instead of making assumptions, let me just go down a list:
1) Are you looking for something unique, refreshing, or surprising in the MMO Genre? If yes, then do not play.
2) Are you someone who holds their time very precious, as opposed to looking for something to kill some time? If yes, then do not play. (also: do not play ANY currently existing MMO, Rift or otherwise)
3) Did you play WoW (or other "WoW Killer" style MMO) and quit out of boredom? If yes, then do not play.
4) Are you a very challenge-oriented gamer, who always plays games on the highest difficulty from the start and enjoys unforgiving games such as Demon's Souls? If yes, then do not play. (This also includes most MMOs).
I daresay that covers it. For more detail, check out my review on Gamespot
But i thought we wernt in Azeroth anymore lol
Well I was into the game till the new patch which has ruined some of the classes looks like another game on its way to biteing the dust. Cant believe how in one patch they have ruined several classes once again developers never learn and carry on ruining what were looking to be decent games.
You asked this question here? Dude, I could have told you all of the answers you'd get on both sides.
And I agree with the person who said we'd have to read your mind to know.
As for me, I like Rift. A lot. And that's coming from someone who is really, really sick of WoW and who also said I'd never pay another monthly sub again. But despite what a lot of people say about Rift being just like WoW - I love Rift. I'm sick of WoW. Evidently there are some differences.
That all said. Rift is light on content. If you are a 4+ hour per day kind of player then you might get bored in a month. If you are a 5 to 15 hour per week player then I don't see why you'd get bored unless you just have mmo burnout in general.
Final comment: I find it VERY telling that Rift is number 2 on the hype meter right here at mmorpg.com behind Guild Wars 2. Atlantica has owned the hype meter for at least 2 years in terms of released games, and released games are rarely seen in the top 10, let alone number 2. Rift is a month old and is hanging on to number 2. I've never seen that before.
So a lot of people think it's worth it. I have no idea if you will or not.
I was pleasantly surprised when I went from Apprentice to full 5 star Elite in under 2 months. I was pleasantly surprised again when I went from Elite to just barely Hardcore in 2 weeks. Apprentice, here I come!
Let me guess... you played one of the 3 OP classes ?
Its called balance or a 1st attemt to balance the game.
