Out of nowhere I became interested in Rift, is it worth it?

Would someone care to hand out a test code? :P

How in the heck are any of us who do not know you going to be able to answer this question? Sorry to be pedantic but you are asking us to decide HOW YOU WILL FEEL about this game. Not being you that is just not possible.

I'm not asking for "My" opinion, I'm asking for YOUR opinion. People please stop replying with this and give me in YOUR opinion what YOU would do.

This will really depend on what you're looking for. If you want new and innovative with different than standard combat and crafting systems then, much though I regret to say it, stay away. Rift offers only three innovations: the ascended soul system, the rifts public group quests themselves, and a server architecture with a lot of potential. The game play is the same, the crafting is the same, and it's very stereotypical sword and board fantasy.

Now that being said, if you want good game-play, in-class flexibility, fun PvP (not much open world yet, but they have promised us RvR in the future), and a well polished game, the I recommend Rift. I've been playing it since Beta 5 and like it alot. I especially like that Trion listens to players and responds to us. A lot of people are whining that they aren't simply because they have gotten used to the speed of Trion's responses on lesser issues that are easily fixed.

It has a couple new things which are fun but it is nothing 'evolutionary'. with that said it is a fun MMO. Right now Impulse has it, digitally, for 20% off so if you are interested now is a good time. If you are searching for something different try these (which have free trials): Fallen Earth, Darkfall, Eve Online, and Vindictus (F2P).

Subscribers can now invite up to 5 people each to give it a try, I believe there is a thread her dedicated to the exchange of the codes. Best way to know is some hands on time.

I find Rift to be a good game if you are the type of gamer that makes only one or two characters and sticks with them.  If you are an alt-o-holic then Rift is not that great of a game at the moment.  Later if and when they add more starting zones, different leveling tracks, and more quests so you pick the quests lines you want to do then it will be much better for alt-o-holics.  Some people say Rifts and PvP are alternate leveling lines, but rifts are just another form or mindless grind...while good for a diversion it is really no different than sitting some where in any game and just killing stuff that spawns in a group.  Can be fun, but *shrug* I can not imaging solely leveling a character that way.  Eventually you have to go back and do the same old same old quests that have been run before.

But as I said if you like to stick to your character and just max out one or two then Rift is great for that.  World is nice to look at.  Classes are fun to toy with.

to the OP.. and nobody else... so keep your comments to yourself.....because i dont care...

OP... dont buy it.  SIT BACK... do what i did.  and WAIT.  Dont waste 50 bucks...

    wait and wait... and wait....

all those saying how they love the game.. play it....just sit back and WAIT....

after about 3-6 months... and once they release a FREE TRIAL.. then its time to try it.

i wont even give you my opinion on the game.

because when you play the trial you will draw your own picture.  DO NOT FALL FOR THE "NEW GAME AWE" that most gamers seem to do.

I have wasted too much money on crappy designed MMOs...

its time to let them put their money where there mouth is and show us the good game is about.

let the GAME HOPPERS do the talking for you... wait on EVERY RELEASED GAME for 3 to 6 months.  Unless of course you have BETA'd it.

i guarantee you will be happier you didnt spend wasteless money.  I have a new rule now for new games.  I NEVER BUY A GAME NOW that i cant try first.  ie. FREE TRIAL OR beta it.

try this new concept... its a great way to follow games now.

They've actually released a free trial right now. If you got a friend playing the game, he has received 5 trial codes in his email, ask for one. Alternatively you can check at the thread here in mmorpg.com, but I assume that the codes posted were used by now.

OP I was in the same situation as you. Thanks to a kind person here I recieved a free trial account.

Now I have played hardly any of the game obviously but at the moment I am please I did not rush out and buy it. Personally I am very surprised this game does not recieve more critisism for it's combat. I have played a bunch of the P2P MMO's out there aside from WoW, Warhammer and Fallen Earth. For me Rift features the worst combat I have seen in an MMO.

In any case I will play some more and see how it goes. Very thankful for the free trial though. :)

Well I can say I am notorious for game hopping every other week or so and since beta 6 I haven't played anything else seriously.  So for me?  This game has been a great investment.  There isn't much new here but there is tons of content and stuff to do and everything has been done pretty well imo.

It's a WoW-style MMORPG (.. I mean.. it is REALLY WoW-style) with MUCH better graphics and MUCH better class customization and obviously PQ's (Rifts. If you're not familiar with the term PQ's, then it's quests that spawn in areas in the world where multiple players can participate without being in the same group and scale according to how many players there are).

If you are tired of hotkey MMO's, then I wouldn't bother. If you are looking for something that is WoW-like with different content and nicer visuals, then I would recommend Rift.
