To the OP and other people who are bored.  I'd suggest logging in and doing something that you enjoy.  I'm level 36 and I only log in to do what I feel like doing.  I don't log in and force myself to level up, or run a dungeon, or grind pvp.  I just do what I want.  Therefor, I have not burned myself out forcing myself to do a certain thing when I really don't feel like doing it.  That's why sandboxes really work, you can do anything you want.  There are more options than you think in theme parks, just don't get caught up in chasing the proverbial carrot all the time.

Couldn't agree more.  I enjoy Rift but seldom am I doing the same thing all the time.  Today I spent 2 hours practicing on test dummies with my level 22 Mage to rate the differences in damage between weapons/stats for a PVP build which I spent many more hours figuring out while doing Warfronts.  (which are fun as hell)  Then i battled death rifts to gather enough otherwordly source for a nice epic ring which boosted my stats even more, which I was able to see while practicing on test dummies.  There is so much more than just going from exclamation mark to exclamation mark.  I even role-played for two hours.  First time I ever did that in my life, and was fun.  (except everyone knew the lore much more than me)

    Well,

You know, sandbox games _do_ work, the industry just has no confidence into the potential player base because all games that succeeded or half-way succeeded during the last 8 years were high-budget themepark games.

But the fact that low-budget sandbox-games like Minecraft (one bloody guy designed it!!) can virtually explode interestwise, that shows people love to create.

The problem with modern sandbox approaches is the 'common sense' link of sandbox as 'open-pvp harsh death penalty fight or die'-mentality.

I think, and I thought so for years, a game that featured PvE and sandbox on a quality level could be a complete smash hit. A game that truly captures the idea of Pen and Paper. Getting together some guys, adventuring through the lands, preparing night camps, tinkering with ropes, hooks and cogs, giving people the opportunity to build their own houses/castles/cities etc and defending them against WORLD mobs... I think it would work just perfectly and include all players, not just a cesspool of the pseudo-darwinistic 'sink or swim noob'-PvPers.

You probably just need a game that is different. There is a long line of MMOs starting with EQ that have more or less been different versions of the same game and you have played enough of them that a new copy of them isn't going to stay fresh all that long. Rift brings pretty much nothing new to the genre and it doesn't really improve on much if any of the old concepts so if you are burned out on this specific part of the genre already it is going to be hard to stick with Rift.

If the skill is fun then yes.  It may be the same "grind" but if its a fun grind such as...well Taming in UO then its not that bad.  It's not so much just skill points that I think are fun but fun mechanics like I would go tame a dragon and kill dragons.  That was one of my favorite things to do in UO.  I enjoyed being a bard and treasure hunting.  I think there needs to be a new UO.  It was just a whole different experience than today's mmo's.  Eve is a skill point game however it's nothing like UO.  It is a sandbox but a totally different style of playing.  Maybe i should just go back and play UO.  Nastalgia is powerful, but if there was a new game with the same types of skills or some elements that made UO fun I think that would be just wonderful.

I totally just ranted on and on there but what im saying is it isn't the clicking of a button a million times to get a skill that is fun.  It's the skill itself thats fun and the things you can do with it.  Also, I wasn't constantly worried about oh I have to get my level or 2 in today.  Instead I was like "oh cool another skillup."  I dunno...it's definitely a different feeling.

It seems that regardless of what we say, no other game can give you as much fun as UO. I suggest you follow your instincts and just play the game. The analogy you stated simply doesn't make sense for me. I could easily swap them out and say "Oh cool I levelled up".

Yeah but the other will say cool every 10 mins and u ll say cool evry 12-36 hours xD

I think everyone who ever played UO will say there should be a UO2 .. tbh a game with its history and sandbox design DONE PROPERLY would not only have ex UO players arriving in droves but would have x10 that in people joining to see what all the fuss is about. It happened with Rift.

I think its very clear at this point that the MMO community has had its fill of themepark games, as people have said and will continue to say.. weve done all this before. A themepark is a themepark regardles of its story, when you apply the same gameplay to a series of games, they are infact 1 game with different skins.

The big companies are going to start understanding this and some probably already have, while there is some money to be made in them, no company is going to see a Blizzard type of success unless they do something completely different. A Sandbox is just waiting for that kind of opportunity now we just need a company with the BALLS and money to DO IT!

Lol why would you see it coming when like many you were caught up in the hype. It was made clear by many who played the game in alpha and beta that the game was boring. I have said it many times as well as others who played up to level 42 in beta and did all the content on both faction that rift would get boring and the world gets smaller and smaller the higher level you go. You were one of many who shot us down for telling it like it is and now the penny has dropped that we were telling the truth. Rift is on the same par as ROM and all thoses other FTP terrible mmo. I guess you will not be so quick to shoot the messenger next time.

Low pop or not i will never drop Vanguard for a game as shallow as rift,it's like night and day.

It's funny how so many people on this site just can't seem to admit they're burnt out on the genre.  Take a break from MMO's for a while and try a few other genres.  Chances are you're going to miss all the questing action in a month or two. =P

Well somehow I went in to change my 6 month sub back to monthly today and found that I had 179 days left and I resub again on Oct 3rd. So they've started collecting the cash from us.

I can now spot a boring MMO playing for a week.

If during that week I haven't spoke in chat or looked for a group then it means that I ll get bored soon

That's what happened with this game

I played Beta 1 and I had a blast, but I realise that practically I played solo.

During Beta 2, I suddenly got bored, but I forced myself to play the remaining betas...........I thought it would get better but it got worse.

There is zero community interaction in this game, just the usual solo leveling and the artificial dungeon runs consisting of a group  of pleople who don't speak to each other.

people play this game, and suddenly they go to the LFG section of mmorpg.coms forum and type something like "Looking for a game without quests"

Fallen Earth is nothing more than a themepark in sandbox clothing.

As to MMO boredom in general, what did you expect? How often can you do the exact same thing before it gets to not be fun?

Just about all MMO games are the same level progression by repetition which culminates in a level cap where you then do the same boring activites time and again for some pointless new epic items. Expecting a new game to make this same old experiance brand new again by having you wear a different hat is a bit silly.

For example, when my dog gets tired of a game of fetch the stick, switching to the red rubber ball isn't going to make him any less bored with the activity.

problem with sandbox is same issue rift is having people will just get the cookie cut and go for it.UO ,people remember the good things but forget it had cookie cut too.mage/tank anyone?

the only real advantage with sandbox is that you have the freedom to explore without the need for moving zones according to level and even then remember to gain skill you had to go to tough places.anyone remember the wall in UO for skilling?

problem is that many of this new mmo know jack about balancing and the end game tends to be dull.so people lose intrest.i admit its getting harder to log into rift for me and begin to regret paying for 3 months.

You appear to be under the impression that the only progression alternative to questing is a UO progression system. As a result of that, you've chosen to laugh at others rather than try to understand them. Just sayin'  ;)

Ultima Online, EVE Online, Puzzle Pirates, and A Tale in the Desert all offer alternatives to quest based progression systems. Passive, offline and even player skill systems are some of the ways to advance a character in sandbox style MMOs.

Quit complaining about being bored and try running some warfronts (for XP!), rift raiding, dungeons/instances, hunt down collection shineys, raise your crafting, etc. skills, read any of the dozens of books that can be found in game, go mine metals or forage crap to save up for your mount, buy a second role for your main and raise his/her skills, level an alt (you'll need 4 chars on each side to experience all the builds), knock out the current world event quests to gather shards for some one time, never to be sold again, purple gear...... so many things you can do.

I find it a bit odd and not because of my siggy but generally how people approach games these days. We want them to entertain us but we make little effort to actually be entertained. It is like players are waiting for games to fall flat on their faces we aren't making attempts at playing we are just trying the game on for size. There seems to be no actual committment in this genre any longer. We don't try.

Personally I am also seeing myself this way too. I was also behaving like this for awhile until I stopped myself. There is a lot to do in this game. If you take the time and do it. Compared to other games I have played in the past , this games allows you to level in many ways and perhaps it is this that is making gamers just bored. Spoilt for choice but the genre fatigue has you not even trying the other options.

Along with other factors this could be the problem. Also maybe the longevity of MMO's is not for you? Level 40 problably took like 30+ hours which is the equivelent to a RPG. Or maybe you need good friends to play with? I usually get bored if I solo alot. There are many things to consider but I think very little has to do with the game itself.

I've been playing Rift pretty heavily since I bought it. I did do a couple forays into EQ2 to help out with leveling some guildmates' alts, but other than that, I've been playing Rift a lot. I so far don't feel burnt out in the slightest. Rift lived up to my expectations from what I followed in the news on this sight and what was advertized as its features.

Believe in the hype? Well the game wasn't hyped up until later on in its beta phase when people realized how polished it was. Unlike some MMO releases, Trion did not give false information about their game and it released with the features Trion claimed the game would have. That's a rarity in this industry: just look at the releases of WAR, DCUO, and AoC for example.

An odd first for me, I haven't gotten fed up with anything at all, despite having the game for a week. It usually takes me a week to start getting annoyed with bugs, design decisions, etc. It also usually takes a week for a game to start taking the wind out of the sails for me, especially with the most recent releases. I started feeling burnt out on WAR and AoC after a week, in FE I didn't even make it to a week. With Rift, I've been enjoying myself so much, I actually think about logging in when I'm at work. That isn't something I felt since my DAoC days!

I feel sad for those who are so jaded with the genre that they 1) fail to recognize it and go from game-to-game never satisfied with anything, 2) bash Rift saying it's a pile of junk.

No, even if one doesn't like it, they should acknowledge that it's a very high quality MMO from the artwork, the crafting of the world, the fact that everything works right. So many people say it's a WoW clone, but I wonder how much of the story they actually paid attention to, whether they really looked at the world, or if they just chased quests and went from point A to point B. To me, the atmosphere of the game is unique, and it is inspired, it's just less in-your-face as WoW's story is.

I'm not just exploring, but also marvelling at many of the design decisions Trion made and admiring how they designed the world. I really think they made a great MMO here and it's a shame that so very many people seem to not notice about what a jewel it is. As a long-time MMO fan, I really think this one is great. That's not to say there aren't things that can be improved, but the base for this game is one of the most solid I've ever come across.

I think you just summarised the reason most heavy type sandboxes are not successful and have to incorporate themepark elements to survive.

I don't think it's always the product's fault. For example, some people find mountain climbing entertaining. Others find it an activity that involves too much effort for too little gain. Each their own and they are both right to their preferences.

Im not saying game is not good first of all, it is unique in many ways accually. But quests are BORING! No one can say otherwise. Its just sending me same spot for 4th time!? Sorry but pvp is same as WoW, nothing new to me in that area. Only thing to do is chasing rifts but It cant be possible when there is no one around x_x Its still a good game but I got bored after 40.
