RIFT Got a high rating, why? [Mod Edit]

jdobby2jdobby2 Member Posts: 4

Sorry guys, but this game absolutely sucks.  I uninstalled it shortly after exiting the nub area.  The game has no visual stimulation.  What I see is a designer who copied warhammer, except wanted to also make it prettier.  When I start a game, and I'm in the nub area I usually see high level NPCs with awesome armor and think, "damn, I want that!".  In Rift, all I could think is "I hope that's not waiting for me at the end game."

The combat is ultra generic and completely mindless wow-standard button pressing.  Combat is tedious to say the least. slash slash, build up points, use special move. repeat.

The leveling system is a joke, and it prevents you from speccing all your points into one tree, instead it forces you to spend them in other roles else they just sit there.

The UI is a complete rip off of every other mideival game.  It looks just like WoW and even takes the pact system/combo points right from it.

The only semi- cool thing is that my dude looks decent by level 7 instead of looking like some peasant.

As you can see, this is a very detailed review, but this is nowhere near the rating it recieved.  There is nothing pulling me in, and especially due to the poor visual design.  I'm really glad this ally weekend happened, b/c now i wont need to worry about wether or not I want to play it.

game is good, combat is the problem. Same boring thing that we've seen for years.

I think gamespot.com's review and their score (8.0) fit the game perfectly.  It's incredibly solid, yet it's also incredibly mundane standard faire for the genre that's likely only getting such love because it's the first solid alternative to WoW to be released since Lord of the Rings Online.

This review just fascilitates this site's general fanboyism towards the title.

Noob area doesn't show you the depth this game has to offer people.

The game has no visual stimulation.

Maybe you don't have yours turned to ultra with all visuals turned up. There is plenty visual candy in the game from great use of sahdows, bump mapping on everything, god rays when appropriate, all kinds of animated things from trees to cannon blasts to little animations on architecture you have to stand still to notice.

If you want to play dress up there are plenty of barbie games out there. Rift does have many many different looks for weapons and gears as you level up. You can also use dye to color your armors to a preffered look

The combat is ultra generic and completely mindless wow-standard button pressing.  Combat is tedious to say the least. slash slash, build up points, use special move. repeat.

There are several games out there that have twitch based reflex style play where you hit block to block and such...you should have done some research and known already that this is a hotkey type of game similar to a great many before it. When done correctly the button pressing can be alot of fun...especially in PvP

The leveling system is a joke, and it prevents you from speccing all your points into one tree, instead it forces you to spend them in other roles else they just sit there.

The game was originally designed to give 51 points total. This was changed during beta testing and the new cap gives 66 points total. The reason you can't put more points into a certain ability earlier on is that is would make you overly powerful vs the environment due to having much more powerful abilities than the PvE mobs. Also having a mix of 2 or more souls is always the way to go since you can find great balance and utility from mixing them. You would have known this if you played more than just past the noob area...lol

The UI is a complete rip off of every other mideival game.  It looks just like WoW and even takes the pact system/combo points right from it.

The UI is a typical UI that is highly customizable in size and placement. It is like WoW's UI but not the original WoW...and Rift's UI doesn't need add-ons.

The only semi- cool thing is that my dude looks decent by level 7 instead of looking like some peasant.

It only gets better from there. You will never know though since you formed an opinion at such an early stage of the game.

As you can see, this is a very detailed review, but this is nowhere near the rating it recieved.  There is nothing pulling me in, and especially due to the poor visual design.  I'm really glad this ally weekend happened, b/c now i wont need to worry about wether or not I want to play it.

It is ok with those of us that have spent time to know and enjoy this game, that you are not going to subscribe. There are plenty playing now and having a blast. I enjoyed WoW but not it's comic book style graphics....so Rift fits me like a glove since it's more of an adult flavor of WoW.

My comments are in green in response to OP

I don't play the game and probably won't, but I can tell you that your "review" has zero credibility.  I talk to people who actually play the game and they tell a different story.

Must be bored this evening eh? Anyways, I've played this game to cap. I've also done most of the t1 & t2 content, and did a decent amount of PvP before I stopped. Why did I stop? I was simply bored. This game is more or less of the same with a few twists thrown in. But don't get me wrong, it's a good game, it's fun, it's fairly well polished. It's just not very innovative. So if you're like me and you're looking for a breath a fresh air in the genre, look else where. Otherwise, dive right in and you won't regret it.

And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill,
And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"

I think it is good that we have another company who can polish games well but unfortunately for Trion their game is just too similar to what alot of us have been playing for the past 7+ years. Rift events and invasions are too boring and become more of a nuisance after awhile. A crap ton of fedex quests here too which is a turn off as well. That is just my opinion of it.

I knew Rift copied game mechanics from other popular MMO's before I bought it.  The concept of using what works well didn't bother me at all - but the implemenation of it did.

I played every game Rift copied up to max level and through end game content.  Rift just bored the hell out of me before I was level 10, I made it to level 22 before I put it on the shelf.

Several minor things that just didn't do much for me, the graphics are advanced for an MMO but the artwork didn't appeal to me.  The class-tree system was familiar and I understood it all - but the same flexibility in crafting your character also made it harder to put together a decent group because every toon was like box of chocolates, you never know what's inside (scouts tanking better than tanks?? wtf? ).   That would have been forgiveable if the combat system didn't just bore the hell out of me - on that point I will agree with OP - 1,2,3,4,5 -discharge and do it again.  No reason to make siuational decisions, just macro everything to a couple of buttons and mash away.

To be fair, I think this game is entirely in the eye of the beholder.  Most of the right pieces are there and it's up to you to decide if it all works together.  Maybe it's because I played all the games Rift borrowed from that I don't find it interesting now.  If you have a chance to try the game out for free I'd say go for it but don't spend $50 to just try it.

Completely incorrect assessment and completely inaccurate facts about the game.  Especially since the "reviewer" didn't play past level 5.

What is it with posters who have low post counts coming here to dump on a game and never be seen again? Zero credibility with me  to be honest.

I for one look at the registration date on the account. That way, I can be sure if it's a junk spammer or just a user that doesn't bother to post much.

    ^ What he said.

You can't judge an entire game based on your 5 minute experience in the nub zone. I'm no fan of Rift but the game is definately polished very well and I can see why people would play it. Not every game focuses on pretty gear, some games focus on things that matter rather than who has the best looking eye candy. You've been brainwashed by WoW xD

Should't a game be appealing from the start ?

I certainly would'nt be playing a game if I diddent find it fun from the start, i'd probably be bored really quick, and i'd rather not spend my free time with something I find tedious, then rather have something I enjoy and find fun.

I played rift my self, and only got to like level 14, but I was bored out of my mind by then, probably also because as stated earlier, that I have already done this in a lot of other mmo's before. And the graphics aren't really that good either.

Atleast the artstyle doesnt appeal to me at all, and the low texture resolution doesnt help on that either (and yes I did play on ultra before anyone asks ;p)

Obiously rift is a game you either like or don't like - There are such a broad varity of different oppinions on rift that it all really comes down to taste I suppose ?

I can easily see why some might like it, and why it would recieve a high rating, though I do believe that this is due to its polished state.

Not gonna argue with that, because it's moot. But the CNN article claimed the game to be revolutionary, and at that I can only say LMAOROLF

The game is polished and it acually works compared to most MMO's being released between WoW and now.

With that said it has no other attractive side to it.

The combat is boring as hell, thanks to the god awful animations.

The world and story is laughably uninspired.

The rifts go from being fun to becoming a nuisance.

And while the graphics might look good from a technical perspective, the artistic value is zero. Yet again, uninspired.

The sounds are just headache inducing and so is Inon Zur's array of cacophanous instruments, but I'd also have a hard time getting inspired to do good music for such a dull world.

And with all those issues it's really hard to get drawn in.

This game numbers wise has been an overwhelming success.  If you were right then no one would of bought the game but over a million people did which means one thing, its nothing more than your personal opinion.

The masses that don't/won't play WoW want a WoW that isn't WoW.

    That makes sense, dammit!

We had about 10 players play this in beta. 5 didn't buy it all pretty much agreeing that it is just more of the same and really bland. Out of the 5 who bought it 2 quit and 3 are still happily playing it. Those 3 are all players who haven't done a MMO in quite some time and all of the people who have quit have done most of the MMOs out there.

I think if you are kind of burned out on this type of MMO Rift isn't going to work for you but if you have taken a break from MMO or played different types of MMO like Asheron's Call or UO or something this title can be a solid one for you.

  • TurdinatorTurdinator Member Posts: 210

I played it in Beta. I'm playing this weekend.  If I get to the point where I want to make an elf/dwarf MMO my main game again, this will be the one.

Not sure why this site gave Rift such a high review, but the answer is probably as simple as the reviewer really liked it.  Anybody that reads one review as gospel these days is just being lazy.  There are lots of sites that link to multiple reviews and give average scores based on all of them.

I always make sure I read both the highest scored review and the lowest scored review before making a decision.  I highly recommend that, as the lower score reviews almost always give much better information about the game and properly set your expectations.  If you can read the lowest score review and accept the deficiencies listed (assuming it is an honest review and not just message board ranting), then you are probably going to like the game...

It got a high rating because a lot of people gave it a high rating.

I hazzard to guess that a lot of people who have left the game did not go back and adjust their rating of the game however.

I know I did -- Initially I thought the game was wonderful.  They did a few "adjustments" and I reached 50th and I thought the game was good but I was afraid because of the first nerfs the game did and because I was wondering about the path from there.

Then plaques went from 15 down to 4 and they lowered the faction gains for quests and then the huge nerf patch.

At that point they had ruined their game and I did not think it was as good anymore and I lowered my review.  I had given it a 9.2 and I lowered it to 7 when I left the game.

It is a "good game" -- it just isnt being balanced/managed well.

  • xKingdomxxKingdomx Member UncommonPosts: 1,541

Because compare to release in the last 5 or 6 years, Rift is the better game. Rating is used to differentiate, the better game from the bad games. Looking at the mmo genre now, Rift is probably the better game. Hopefully when other games are released, rift will get re-assess again.

    Im thankful that i got to play this game on my laptop on the lowest settings. The game still looks amazing. The game is Very accessible and no real learning curve. Character models are pretty good.  {mod edit}
