Sorry guys, but this game absolutely sucks. <---opinion and not a correct one.
I uninstalled it shortly after exiting the nub area.
Noob area doesn't show you the depth this game has to offer people.
The game has no visual stimulation.
Maybe you don't have yours turned to ultra with all visuals turned up. There is plenty visual candy in the game from great use of sahdows, bump mapping on everything, god rays when appropriate, all kinds of animated things from trees to cannon blasts to little animations on architecture you have to stand still to notice.
What I see is a designer who copied warhammer, except wanted to also make it prettier. When I start a game, and I'm in the nub area I usually see high level NPCs with awesome armor and think, "damn, I want that!". In Rift, all I could think is "I hope that's not waiting for me at the end game."
If you want to play dress up there are plenty of barbie games out there. Rift does have many many different looks for weapons and gears as you level up. You can also use dye to color your armors to a preffered look
The combat is ultra generic and completely mindless wow-standard button pressing. Combat is tedious to say the least. slash slash, build up points, use special move. repeat.
There are several games out there that have twitch based reflex style play where you hit block to block and such...you should have done some research and known already that this is a hotkey type of game similar to a great many before it. When done correctly the button pressing can be alot of fun...especially in PvP
The leveling system is a joke, and it prevents you from speccing all your points into one tree, instead it forces you to spend them in other roles else they just sit there.
The game was originally designed to give 51 points total. This was changed during beta testing and the new cap gives 66 points total. The reason you can't put more points into a certain ability earlier on is that is would make you overly powerful vs the environment due to having much more powerful abilities than the PvE mobs. Also having a mix of 2 or more souls is always the way to go since you can find great balance and utility from mixing them. You would have known this if you played more than just past the noob area...lol
The UI is a complete rip off of every other mideival game. It looks just like WoW and even takes the pact system/combo points right from it.
The UI is a typical UI that is highly customizable in size and placement. It is like WoW's UI but not the original WoW...and Rift's UI doesn't need add-ons.
The only semi- cool thing is that my dude looks decent by level 7 instead of looking like some peasant.
It only gets better from there. You will never know though since you formed an opinion at such an early stage of the game.
As you can see, this is a very detailed review, but this is nowhere near the rating it recieved. There is nothing pulling me in, and especially due to the poor visual design. I'm really glad this ally weekend happened, b/c now i wont need to worry about wether or not I want to play it.
It is ok with those of us that have spent time to know and enjoy this game, that you are not going to subscribe. There are plenty playing now and having a blast. I enjoyed WoW but not it's comic book style graphics....so Rift fits me like a glove since it's more of an adult flavor of WoW.
Well said. I agree with you about being a adult flavor of Wow.
I think the game getting a B is about right, it's solid in most area's and is pretty polished when it launched. I felt myself never excited while playing it, maybe I'll try it again in the future, but honestly, I want something new, not something that's be recycled through so many MMO's. The Rift content that I played, was never an eye candy to me, it was just there and it was all right. I have so many other games to look forward to that are coming out either this year or the next few, that are bringing so much more to the table.
Wildstar (2013) & Elder Scroll Online (2013)
Playing: Diablo 3, WOW, Far Cry 3 & X-Com.
Enjoyed: WOW 5 1/2 yrs, LOTRO 3yrs, GW 1/2yr, DFO 1yr, EVE Online 3yrs, and Huxley (Beta).
Failed to impress: GW2 3months, Tera Online 6 months (best combat system in any MMO I've played) STO 1/4yr, Aion 1/2yr, AoC 1yr, CO, Fallen Earth, DDO, EQ2 1/2yr, WAR 1/2yr, Lineage 2 and FF XI 1/2yr, FF XIV.
From my own experience, the first couple of days I played it, I would have said an A+. After about the 5th or 6th day a solid B, then after 2 weeks having tried both defiant and guardian sides and all the souls, with the highest level a 31 (Average about 2-3 hours a day playtime), and then unsubscribing and uninstalling before free time was up, a D.
I played it from level 1 to level 2 andd i think the whole game is the same..
I only received 1 piece of loot during my grindfest, graphics sux (i have a 17 year old GAMING computer & it can't run it on max!!!! i payed 2500 dollar back then !!!!!)
I saw run a chicken and i though, damn i wanna look like that on lvl 2, then i dinged lvl 2 and i wasn't a chicken ??ç!!!!!
There is also combat with your keyboard & mouse... RIPOFFFFFF, all other games are with a keyboard & mouse too !!! omg !!!
The only semi- cool thing is that my dude looks like a level 3 by level 2 instead of looking like some peasant !!!
This is my detailed review from the buddy weekends (ps i did not buy the game (yet))
How about the 14 pages complaining about the big "world event" which made the game unplayable atm? People crying to Trion to stop the event so they can actually play? Just a glimpse of that, a 20 pages topic:
How about the most gold spams and hacks, which were not resolved? People who call Trion just to hear "i'm sorry, no technical assistant is able to help you now", being sent from one place to the other, hours of phone calls without any solution?

Seriously your complaining about it not having guild bank or LFG tool, you do realize WoW did not launch with those features . Rift will be getter later in the next patch. As for gold spams and hacks most of it has been reduced since launch if you played the game you would now.
Yea the world event isn't the best reminds me of lg issues that came with AQ event hopefully they resolve the issues, either ways its not deal breaker since there other things to do.
I think people who troll on rift are nothing but wow players who are jealous that this is a wow killer .

No Guild Bank. Not even a LFG tool. Yea for sure. Only jealous people bash Rift. A clear WoW killer.

Except those posts he is refering to was created today and yesterday.
Because compare to release in the last 5 or 6 years, Rift is the better game. Rating is used to differentiate, the better game from the bad games. Looking at the mmo genre now, Rift is probably the better game. Hopefully when other games are released, rift will get re-assess again.
The opening mark is highly subjective. I consider both LotRO and Aion to both be better games. Then again, I also consider FFXIV to have the potential to be a better game than Rift, which is why I'm playing the former instead of the latter.
The problem with Rift isn't that it isn't a good game. It's that it's completely and utterly uninspired. It does absolutely nothing to move the genre forward.
Rift doesn't really do anything new, but that doesn't mean it's not polished to the nuts and really fun to play with others. For the record, I really didn't like the game until I hit about lvl 12. The newbie area blows.

I dislike Rift for being old sausage in new casing but even then if i had been asked imho a rating of 7 for the level of polish it has is ok.
Rating of 7 means its a mediocre, technically working game that does nothing wrong so far but lacks any intersting content.
"Torquemada... do not implore him for compassion. Torquemada... do not beg him for forgiveness. Torquemada... do not ask him for mercy. Let's face it, you can't Torquemada anything!"
Anyway! Rift got such a high rating - because the Guys from the Gaming-Mags never met Endgame. And that's the sad part of testing MMOs: none of these tests includes Endgame.
But seriously who cares? Some of you people act like the whole world is depending on it!
Originally posted by Scambug I really don't understand why everyone is so impressed with Rift's polish. Every single feature was stolen from WoW and WAR, of course it's going to be polished... The fact that the players reviewed the game at an 8.63...makes the MMORPG rating seem perfectly acceptable.

What feature did it steal from WAR, if you are refering PQs they have nothing in common with Rfits. CoH had lot more innovative ideas than WoW (which in fact incoporated a ton of features from CoH in later patches) guess which MMO did better?
Just curious, but why do people write "nub" instead of "noob" or "newb"? It's not even pronounced the same.
nub

1. the point, gist, or heart of something.
2. a knob or protuberance.
3. a lump or small piece: a nub of coal; a nub of pencil.
4. a small mass of fibers produced on a card, dyed brilliant colors, and introduced into yarn during the spinning process.

This is the post I woke up to. Thank you. So much truth in one little space....a space the size of a small nub and yet large enough to hold a big chuckle.
I wasnt impressed for the most part all through beta. Got one of the free keys here and must say I am enjoying myself. Will it be a long term thing? Doubtful, far too many quality single player games coming down the pipe.
I like the class system that they have going on. There is more variety within each archetype than any other class based game I have played. I also like the production value for the most part, although avatar locomotion is annoying. Granted very rarely does any publisher get it right whether it be single player or multiplayer, but it is the ONE thing that you ALWAYS see, unless you go first person mode and that doesn't address the problem of seeing everyone else running around with the absurd gait and movements. Don't know about the quest text or storyline because I have felt absolutely no desire to read the reams of text that it has thrown at me, and as with every game in the genre it is entirely trivial because nothing you or anyone does will have any impact on the game.

Lol, another "things were sh*t 5 years ago so it's cool to happen again, we should not mind". Yes, things are as bad as they were 5 years ago, in some aspects. Too bad for a "Next Generation" game, as the devs call it.
For me, the argument that "WoW did not launch with guild bank and LFG tool so it's normal for the new games not to have them" does not have substance. Those features exist now in that game. When you launch a new product which is in direct competition with WoW (which has those features today, i'm comparing the games today, because i can play them both today, i'm not playing one now and one 5 years ago) there is no common sense reason not to have them implemented at launch. There is absolutely no counter-argument for the positive impact of guild banks or LFG tools (i've said LFG tools, NOT Dungeon Finder)
On the second point, lag issues for this event compared with lag issues that came with AQ - again, they should have had the experience from that event and what a terrible thing that was. I think they Knew Really Well what was going to happen with this world event. I think they knew their servers wont keep up with so many players in one place. Still, they voted for the event to go on. Because they were trying to scam people into keeping subscriptions for another month.
Last thing, the links i've provided, as it was said before, were made today and yesterday.
I'm not looking for a fight. I'm just disgusted by the companies which launch terrible unfinished products and try to sell them as "the next big thing", scamming people into buying the box for a huge price, considering the product. And i have the same disgust for the review sites which rate such games so high. All i can think is that the reviewer played the game only for 4 days, to lvl 20. As long as we keep supporting these aspects, we're gonna get junk games forever.

I understand your thought process, but to expect a new game to have everything current games do is unrealistic. All these tools and systems require time and effort to devolp, if a game didnt lauch until it had every aspect of every other game before it games would never get released. Wow has been out for 7 years how is a brand new game supposed to offer as much unless it were devolped for a similiar amount of time?

If i were to open a new restaurant on an alley where there's already an old, good restaurant, i cannot offer less than that one offers and advertise "i'm better than that old place" because i will just piss off my clients. That was in fact what Trion said, all their marketing revolved around "this is better than WoW".
Those tools i was reffering to were already developed before by many teams. Trion could hire people who did it before. There was no need to re-invent the wheel. It should not take years, really.
