Good job you just found out why games should have been banned xD, because they make pathetic fools feel better about themselves. And that was the intended design to make publishers rich. ppl just play there to win and feel better about their shity self, plus all humans care about themselves, even the biggest "sacrificing your life for others" style simply makes the person feel better about himself since he believes he did something big
But really why should I help a random person, i am not hercules. I have my own goals and this person isnt inside them
(Plus i never needed any help to do something, why does he??games arent nuclear physics)
Games are fun as long as you have balance in your life. I realized that I was spending too much time playing them and now do more real life stuff (like volunteer work) which is much more gratifying. I think when one gets too absorbed in these games it can be unhealthy. We need real world interaction....that's the way we are wired.
Look back Gamers, What happened? When did we become so bitter, abusive, and rude and harbor so much hatred for one another?
This is a generational issue here with kids as a whole, not the gaming community. Developers just thought it would be far more wise to dub their games down so these non-video gamers would be able to play (leading to more money). The gaming community used to be small, and it still is. The kiddies calling themselves "gamers" are hilariously mistaken. These are nothing but normal (I use that term lightly) people trying to be cool by playing video games. So...nothing happened. We're still the same as before, it's just that now we have to deal with 12-year old, hip-hop-loving casual babies ruining our entire industry and enjoyment.
Gaming is ultimately dead. All its heart and soul has been replaced with 'uber' graphics and 4-hour-long campaigns. I can only get my satisfaction through retro gaming (although there are some indie games like Minecraft that are getting the job done).

I like your sig (The fifth element) and the avatar reminds me of Wolf's Rain when the song "Gravity" plays in the background.
As for your comment, depending on the community size and power/influence of the person can one person leaving affect an entire community. In one of the games I played there were three modding groups who liked to try to patch a game for fixing bugs. We were made fun of and attacked all the time even though we were the ones who were spending hours to write code to patch games and servers.
At the end we left the game in question and to this day they have not fixed anything they claimed they would, In fact anytime I log into a server in that game, they do an IP lookup, trace to a similar location and start asking me questions to return....all from people who care more about my programmning abilities than anything else out of desperation.
The same is true when one person leads giant guilds which affect entire server economies. That guild breaks up and the server changes for the better (or worse) depending on the MMO. People love those games due to the kind of power they can get and the same people who call you "friend" are the same who will snap at you when you wish to mod a game to balance everything unbiasedly because they stand to lose the bugs and exploits they use against each other to win.
Sort of reminds me when a certain unnamed company in the real world said "We are going to balance wages and benefits to give everyone an equal share to fight against discrimination" and the next day a coalition of blacks and women were suing the CEO of the said company for "Rights, benefits and priviledges" they would stand to lose...
Just goes to show people talk about diversity and getting along until money and advantages being lost come into question.
Of course anything more is beyond the scope of this thread.

What I read is a long-winded story about a person stuck in Nostalgia unable to let go of the past and embrace the way things are now.
I, too, remember sneaking up in the middle of the night to play Bubble Bobble; or finally getting my own Gameboy; I remember the oo and awe of the Virtual Boy; and the first time I sat down to play the Atari.
Those are good memories, but they aren't what defines gamers, just as aggressive, Dorito munching nerds, screaming into microphones and taunting their enemies into crying children aren't the definition of gamers today.
Gamers come in all shapes and sizes, but one thing we have in common is our passion and love for good; quality games. It's not how we play the game, or how good we are at the game, or even which platform we like better. It's games and people.

The OP is correct, sadly. And people wonder why I prefer soloing.
To the OP, I can only suggest: don't give up hope. I like to believe that most people playing a large MMO are happily gaming away and it's only the bored or the rude that sit around in common areas and spew verbal diarrhea.
Turn off general chat when you don't need it (I know this kinda sucks). Try to join a mature guild that doesn't put up with that crap, or form one yourself. You can find like-minded people out there. It'll take a little time, and you'll have to g-kick a few noncompliants, but it's doable.
Is it possible that you would have a better opionion about yourself than in reality?
The instant I have read your post, I knew you were no more than 17-18.. checked, and surprise, you're 19.

Thanks for saving me the typing.
Like others have said, it's not a gamer thing. People want to feel good about themselves so many people latch onto something they can use to put down others when they can't succeed/excel in life on their own.
As to gamers, that's one reason I am looking forward to Brink even though I am not a huge fan of shooters. No leaderboards, no KDR tracking etc, more XP for teamwork/objectives than killing etc. Should have all the asshats screaming this game sucks!!!!
OP, this supposed society at large you’d rather not let see you associating with games is the same group of people playing the game with you... You see the same behavior on the road to work and in every class room.
It isn’t a problem with “gamers.”
I guess just like in real life you have to pick and choose who you play or assiociate with.
As others have mentioned, this really isn't anything unique to "gamers," but a problem that exists in our entire (world wide) society.
People are incredibly hateful. Go look up popular sports videos, say soccer, and then look at the comments to see all the vitriol being spewed out about what sport is better, what player is better, etc. Even incredibly miniscule things like "it's not soccer! It's FOOTBALL!" and "No! it's FUTBOL!" ignite some insanely hate-filled flame wars.
A high school basketball game at my girlfriend's old high school in Maine required at least a dozen police escorts, and numerous people were arrested (this was few months back). And why? Because they were playing some rival high school and the year prior one of their students chose to move to this one and was now doing very well.
So the rival school "enthusiasts" came in extremely large numbers with intent on crippling this player. And guess what? This was lead predominately by the PARENTS, NOT the student body.
Perhaps game communities were better back when it wasn't as mainstream, I don't remember as I didn't take part in the communities back then. But now that the mainstream people are starting to join in, you're going to be seeing a lot more of this bile.
There lots of people full of hate and anger, and they come in all shapes, sizes, colors and interests. That's the world we've always lived in.
Well, imo most gamers interact with each other through the use of Internet, conventions etc not withstanding (very basically speaking) which creates an ''iron curtain of anonymity'', meaning that you can dish out almost as much hatered online as you can, and there can be practically/virtually no consequences whatsoever.
This seems to imply that it is (some) humans' natural tendency to desire to "dish out hatred" all the time, but they only refrain from doing so out of fear of potential consequences. That's a scary notion to ponder.
Good post OP. Although as others have said I would agree for the most part that this is a problem with the anonymity of the internet and less so "gamers". Although I think the "casual" "hardcore" BS is really people who never played these games growing up and those who did. Most "hardcore" players are those that played games growing up and learned how to properly communicate and work together in games. "Casual" I would say just means they are newer. So those people who used to play games, but not only play casually due to job, family, etc. don't worry you are NOT "casual".
I do not recall anyone stabbing his friend in the back during a game of PnP Dungeons and Dragons and saying "lawl, u suck nub, im out fags"... but I can certainly see the stereotypical jock doing that.
One of the other posters mentioned the invasion of the jocks into the nerds world and that is exactly what this is. And again we aren't out-numbered... just guess who has the louder, more abrupt, in your face personality that stands out more? That's right the "jock". Of course I am stereotyping this to all hell. That personality, when given the ability to be 100% anonymous just turns into a monster. It's an amazing subject of psychology to understand what turns my normal friends into grief-happy uber-leet-asshats the second a video game is turned on.
The whole thing blows my mind every day.
"They essentially want to say 'Correlation proves Causation' when it's just not true." - Sovrath
i'm a casual gamer, now. i have a full time job, kids, and life to keep me from being "hardcore." the people that the OP are talking about arent "casual" or "hardcore" they are people who think it's ok to be rude just for the sake of being rude and getting away with it.
If you're insulted, i have to wonder what you have done to feel that way, or why you would feel that way.
I think people confuse the meaning of "casual" and "hardcore" far too much.
A casual gamer is someone who just does it as "another interest". They've came into gaming recently, are not really all that into it and just faff about on the fringes, really.
A hardcore gamer is someone who focuses on gaming news, older games, difficult and more obscure games etc.
Then you've got professional gamers etc.
Imagine the difference between a person who plays golf on weekends because it's a relaxing thing to do, a person who plays golf because it's one of their major hobbies (buying lots of different clubs etc) and a professional golfer. That's the difference between casual, hardcore and pro. Time is such a meaningless factor (if I play 20+ hours of casual games, am I a casual gamer?) that it's impossible to determine any tags from it.
I agree that "gamers", as described by the OP, are part of the reason why all manner of multiplayer games have ceased to be fun for the general populace. They might argue in the vein of "If it's too hot, get out of the fire.", but I feel that any game open to a wide array of players shouldn't become exclusive to a certain type of player just because those troublesome folks feel better about themselves by griefing.
Personally, I've found that I enjoy MMO's and other multiplayer games a whole lot better when I avoid player interaction because it seems like the large portion of players I end up interacting with are the folks that seem to have no concept of teamwork or multiplayer. They are there solely for personal accomplishment and individual pleasure and they don't care who they step on to get there.
I know that the majority of people reading this have at least played WoW for a while, so I'll use that as an example; We've all been there, watching the ninja-looter need on that epic. We've seen the dps player that has forsaken the concept of completing the dungeon or raid in favor of seeing their stupid avatar name at the top of the dps meter. We've all seen that stupid rogue that refuses to get out of the fire because they "don't want to take the dps hit". We all know stories about that one player that emptied the guild bank and /gquit, and some of us have even seen that player ninja all that loot right before switching servers. When are we going to take a stand and gain a sense of pride again?
Are we, as gamers, really okay with letting this behavior stand? We often feel helpless, as a majority of these types of players are exploiting game mechanics, or even exploiting the nature of hiding behind their avatar and the anonymity of the internet. But how long will we continue to just sit by and let it happen?
It seems like what we need to do, as gamers, is band together. Focus our efforts towards punishment for that kind of behavior, rather than the rather meaningless /ignore command (or equivilant). I know that I am very much in the minority when I say that I think that we shouldn't be allowed so much anonymity when playing these games, but I'm not smart enough to think of another more effective method of making these children (whether they are actually a child, or just acting like one) think a bit before they make playing these games less fun for the people "around" them.
I don't enjoy paying money to play a game that is meant to be multiplayer, when the multiplayer part of the game has turned into the worst part. I don't enjoy turning on my console to play a game with a friend and hating the entire experience because some jerkoff figured out how to cheat.

^ this... This is what OP is talking about. Thank you for proving it, wolfy.
Not only did I understand about half of what you wrote (being generous here), but the comprehensible text was all pretty much "ego stroke, ego stroke, I m so awsumz trololol".
Have you ever actually... um... talked to another human being? Whereas chaos is a natural by product of just about any force interacting with something, humans as a whole are a structured race. Humans have fallen into the "daily grind" because that's just the natural rhythm. Ever tried living without the routine social interactions, the transit times where you have to share space with total strangers, or the schedules that keep you active throughout the day? you end up having a seriously messed up sleep schedule, and your lack of social interaction makes you an intolerable c-word.
Now, I don't know about you, but some people are genuinely good in the real world. Mother Teresa, as a cliched example, never did things for her own personal gratification. Even if it was religious, her motives were somewhere other than her vested interest in a certani outcome or situation. Ghandi, as well, led a nation in a massive hunger strike. Did he do it for his own personal gain? nope, just wanted to make his part of the world a better place. If I were to drag myself into the equation, I bought a homeless guy a burger king meal the other day during lunch break, and sat down at a table with him just for conversation's sake. Did I do it because I wanted to be revered? nope, the guy looked like he had some interesting stories to tell, and I collect those.
Honestly, your opinions are half-formulated and sound like the ramblings of someone who has little to no regular social interaction. Why should you help a random person? because they need help, and i'm sure you're fully aware of the feeling one gets when they're playing a game with thousands of other people, but no one wants to answer them or even return a friendly "hello". It hurts, on a somewhat primal level.
So go ahead and help the poor guy / girl out. Not for yourself, but because you want to be a decent human being. You might make a friend out of the ordeal. who knows?
Hell, I'm willing to bet that if your mother / father hadn't randomly helped a stranger that turned out to be their significant other, you wouldn't be alive today.
Humanity, and on a more individualistic scale, humans, are only as good as they're willing to be. Simply saying "well people are just naturally chaotic and self centered and opportunistic" is more a reflection on your own personal habits than it is on the world around you. As a modicum of proof, look at your statements. First, you claim that people want to win to feel better about their "shitty selves", and then you end your long rant by saying "plus I never needed any help! Games arent rocket science!", implying that something needs to involve physics to be considered difficult.
Hell, if I'm good and drunk, I'll need a team of eight people just to help me make popcorn.
"How quickly the world owes him something that he only knew existed ten seconds? ago!"
omg that's hysterical.
And so true. I remember having to go into the bank and waiting in line so my mother could write a check for the weekend's expenses.
And I'll admit that i'm part of the demographic who is probbaly a "gamer" and would never admit to it in public unless I had an escape route.
I also think it's embarrassing how horrible people will treat each other on forums or in games. I often wonder if they are the same in real life or if they are just using virtual public spaces to broadcast that they need help.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
OP I can give you a simple fact why the whole world Population calls "us" Gamers - because our only purpose is to leech. Yes, leech! Like a blood sucking insect.
What are we actually doing that this planet gets better? Nothing. We are just consuming the whole time after work or school or whatever-free time you got left. We do not think about the problems of our neighbors, we just think selfish for our own.
That's why Gamers are Gamers. Always will be.
When you get 20+ you will come up with this by yourself. I'm not forcing anybody to think so, but when you grow older, you realize that there are more important things than just wasting your time with stuff another brain brought up. Not your brain, your just consuming. Your not even davinci-like on drugs and build your own stuff, just a time-waste consumer.
No way! A gamer? Do you know how cool we actually are, how expanded our minds are, in one direction, compared to someone else's mind who is expanded in another direction.
Do not associate with your target audience.
I don't. I call myself a gamer because I play videogames every day, and have my whole life. I don't give a FUCK about any label someone might throw on me just because there is an asshole down the street who also plays videogames.
Dissassociation is awesome, relieving, and very inviting. You totally get rid of the worry about being lumped into a stupid crowd, and immediately place yourself (undeservingly probably) above them.
I didn't read your whole post because it was a lot of words and I have class soon.
Don't associate with people just because we also play games. Just do your own thing, and stick with the good people of the community.
Look back Gamers, What happened? When did we become so bitter, abusive, and rude and harbor so much hatred for one another?
Since when did it become ok to tell someone they are a "****tard" for buying and loving their Alienware or Mac? When did someone become a "shitbag" for loving AMD over Nvidia?
When did it become OK to judge something by watching 5seconds of game play and then automatically passing it off as stupid and then walking around with an ignorant opinion like you have played and beat the game?
Since when did it become OK to judge something and ignore details before you ever played the game?
Beause you don't know me in real life, and I don't know you in real life. So you can't physically smack me in the face when I say I want to **************************************. (generalization, "you" and "i" are variables). Also because games are played by EVERYONE (america) now, and EVERYONE has access to the internet and EVERYONE is smacked in the face with media bullshit on television. You are witnessing the accelerated declination of the human species in terms of videogames. Psychologists are doing studies on this stuff.
Sounds like you've been smoking a lot of pot, and for that I would like to give you a high five (could be wrong, but you sound like me when I'm stoned, that's all). It is VERY refreshing to see someone put feeling into posts instead of "cool story bro" and "mad cause bad" like I see in Darkfall forums.
If you wanna flip out on any one game's community, release your wrath on Darkfall because it is the apitamy (spellcheck) of what you are describing.
C’mon, you love games! I can't believe you guys act like this to each other.
If anything we should be banding together hanging out like best friends poking fun at all the sports players that have boring lame and worthless lives now that high school is over, and their glory days are over.
But unfortunately, this has never happened.
It happens at any party where there are a few gamers and mainly sports fans. I seen Darkfall and Wow players being buddy buddy at those occasions.
But you are right, and we are not talking about general gamers either, we play the same genre and yet we act like sportsfans that like different teams.
But I guess it is human nature. No matter if it is which country you're from, what music you like, politics, games, sports or whatever people who have a lot in common act like jerks to eachother with no good reason.
It is like people who all really love soccer fight eachother just because they like different teams, a total mystery to me. We need to see the things we have in common, and not hate eachother for differences.
I guess it is something still in us from te time people lived in small groups and feared outsiders.

Plus i am not a stupid person like many people to get mad at obvious trolls that are having fun xD
Mmo communities
Trolls=trololol
Stupid people=I want to haz fun, u ruin it noob, u noobz we will lose teh match, rapequit
Competitive players= i am so pro, headshot
non-stupid people=i love trolls and laugh at stupid people. Ah waht a beautiful design dis game haz
I dont like music, but the sound of 6 mic spammers(using songs, strange sounds, shouting, talking) in a l4d2 match with all talk on makes me want to dance, all that chaos it was beautiful. Ah now that i remembered it, it was so awesome
Is it possible that you would have a better opionion about yourself than in reality?
The instant I have read your post, I knew you were no more than 17-18.. checked, and surprise, you're 19.
By your words, I suppose you're one of the "non-stupid", making fun of the "stupid", right? Oh man, you'll love life when it hits you
I like your sig (The fifth element) and the avatar reminds me of Wolf's Rain when the song "Gravity" plays in the background.
My biggest gripe about todays gamers is that they act like chest beating jocks instead of the well read intellegent people we used to be seen as.
I blame it on incorrect parenting and society saying things are too dangerous and un-PC.
So now weve got a generation of young men expressing their testosterone in the virtual world instead of the real one.
agreed and ty.

To the OP: Welcome to the Internet, enjoy your stay.

Me and a Friend are Bad At Games
Lol this is intresting i 100% agree with you
I agree that "gamers", as described by the OP, are part of the reason why all manner of multiplayer games have ceased to be fun for the general populace.
Thirty years of gaming experience...not sure if I should be proud of that

Hell, if I'm good and drunk, I'll need a team of eight people just to help me make popcorn.
omg that's hysterical.

Re-think.
To the OP:
Ashamed to call yourself a gamer? Come on.
No way!
Sorry for double post
