Wouldn't say the combat is innovative. It has been done before.
Name a AAA MMORPG that has combat like Guild Wars 2 that's worth playing? And no, not Vindictus.
Anyway, interesting article. I agree wholeheartedly. Guild Wars 2 is changing the way we look at MMORPGs. However, evolutionary vs revolutionary is still up for debate.
I don't think a lot of people realize how innovative this game actually is. Dynamic events replacing quests sound great in theory, but once you start playing the game, that feature alone will have changed the way we look at MMORPGs. We're going to start expecting these types of events rather than quests in future games. I believe it will be so enjoyable, you won't want to have to run to and fro to NPCs to get quests and rewards. Guild Wars 2 will spoil us. At least I think so, and I'm sure a lot of people would agree.
Developers are extremely lazy these days. I'm glad developers at ArenaNet are actually doing their job; making a MMO that stands out and actually brings something NEW to the genre.
Hope it's going to be good, looks good both in theory, and on their alpha / beta footage. But that's all I can say really, as it's still 7-8 months away.

you know... I have played vindictus and I have played GW2 demo. GW2 makes Vindictus feel clunky imo.
I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

Wow, I've always wanted to talk to someone who actually played the game (/demo). I don't know if you have played Rift or World of Warcraft, but does GW2 feel/play similiar to either of these? People who are less informed about GW2 may watch a video where the player is rather inexperienced and think that it's like WoW.
I don't know so much. I mean... letting the game speak for itself does sound like a wise idea. I could list many particular MMO subversions that make it unique when compared to any other MMO, but that would just anger fans of other MMOs. We know it's going to be good, so why don't we just talk about parts we like rather than things that'll make it better than other MMOs, considering that better is subjective and all.
And again, I'm one of the bigger GW2 fans out there. It's just that this tarnishes the process a bit. I'm almost tempted to start a thread for people to talk about the features they like myself. Something with a title like: "What makes Guild Wars 2 interesting/special to you?"
(I edited this post to add some padding below the quote. Looked a bit ugly without it.)
There really hasn't been another high quality MMO that has done combat like this. There have been niche market games that have done it but most of them are pretty low quality products that never got much of a population.
My two biggest fears with the game are that PvE will just be boring since there is no PvP mixed in and that the combat won't feel right to me since it is so different than most titles. I think the combat will be fine but I still think I'm going to struggle with the PvE side of the game even if it is done well.
It will probably be an evolution that actually works this time around instead of failing miserably like most others do. The best thign I like about GW2 is doing away with the holy trinity and you actually have to pay attention to what is going on in the game instead of watching red bars go up and down.

DCUO would be a pretty close one there. Best MMO Combat I've played in a completely open world MMO (though Global Agenda kind of counts, but is a TPS where GW2 has more lock on combat like DCUO.) TERA seems to be a good middle ground too.

You'd be surprised by how many people are scandalized by this notion and utterly convinced it cannot work in a gameplay context.
