interesting interview, but the interviewer didnt ask more important questions regarding future content such as new races, various starting areas, more capital cities with new guardian / defiant chiefs, etc, etc, etc at least giving some hints...
Everyone likes to believe that there is logic behind their own assumptions.
Damn near every company that has released an MMO in the past few years has done it poorly, releasing a bug-filled messed. Trion has handled things differently, and has been succesful at it. Obviously they're not just following in the footsteps of the other companies. Perhaps bragging about box sales was seen by Trion as one of the many mistakes other devs have done, thus they've avoided it.
I never said that what I claimed was the truth and absolute fact, it's just my beliefs, and the logic I followed makes a lot more sense than your theory of a golden company suddenly not out for a way to make some profit.
Because Trion released a game that wasn't buggy, they are going to go against basic advertising techniques? Them announcing the 1.6 million accounts, whatever they may be, disproves your theory in the first place. It's proven they aren't "above" announcing numbers. Those failed games also didn't announce sub numbers because they didn't have them to announce.
Nor does Trion until they announce otherwise.
Until Trion comes out and says "Hey guys, we have 1.6 million active subscribers!" I'm not going to assume they have hit that mark. {mod edit}
Makes me wonder if this includes trial accounts as well, from those free weekends.
It also makes me wonder how many accounts, inactive as well, that WoW has.
Very amusing that they're still pluggin' the "We're not in Azeroth anymore" tags.
Well difference there is Rift uses the term accounts, WoW (in the last offical notice I saw) said XXX active accounts. (shrugs) All I know I tried Rift, beta tested, submitted boat loads of bugs, balance and other (some 'game breaking exploits') and on the last 'weekend' most of the exploits were still apparently there....

You're stupid to assume anything at all.
I skimmed it, found that it didn't announce anything that wasn't entirely vague, and then skimmed the rest. The fact remains that they probably haven't hit that many subscribers, be it 1 million or 1.6 million. I'm not sure where the OP pulled that number from.

Your argument is based on them "bragging" about 1.6 million accounts... yet I can't find anywhere where they've said this. That leaves you with no argument.

My argument was based around them not having announced 1.6 or even 1 million active subscriptions. Meaning they don't have them. Them "bragging" about 1 million accounts at launch is old news, and it was decided then that the number didn't stand for active subscriptions or even box sales.
If they had those numbers, it would be the first thing on the docket of shit to do today when they entered the office.
just had to point out that I literally laughed when I started seeing sentiments of simply mentioning how many subs a game has is 'copying WoW.' Might as well say having a title or being an online game is 'copying WoW'
.......... and people talking about boxed sales are way off the mark. The overwhelming majority of sales have been via digital downloads. Even so, I seem to recall reading they have sold something like 275,000 or so boxes in retail stores in addition to the downloads.
Because a lack of innovation succeeding means we'll see more of the same crap for the next 6 or 10 years. RIFT failing may not send the right message to new developers trying the same formula, but at least it won't be sending more of the wrong message.
Rift succeeding = bad for future of MMO's, it sends the signal that the wow formula can work well for other polished turds. Rift failing = less bad for future of MMO's, it sends the signal that the wow formula has only, so far, worked for wow (after repeated attempts to copy it).
Rift failing means a group of investors got burned for 100 Million which is what Trion received to start-up. Granted all that did not go to Rift, but you can believe Rift is a huge piece of that puzzle. I wouldn't say another group of burned investors is good for MMO's.

Did you read the date of that article? April 1st
April first... 2 weeks ago... and he said "A couple of weeks ago". See how that works?

Today is april 15th. 1 week is 7 days. A couple of weeks is 14 days. A couple of weeks ago was april 1st. See how that works?

This was an april fools joke...lol.
Right, cuz every article released on April 1st must by default be a joke.
Unless the game or the product was rush / released too early, I can't understand why people simply wish a game to fail. Its like you need to be the ass in the back whos just waiting to show up and say, "See I told you so!!"

I get it you don't like this 'type' of mmo. But do you even read what you are writing? The game you are looking for will never exisist, if I said it once I've said it a million times, no company is going to spend the money to develop a game that is any good for a small portion of the mmo community. Not everyone wants what you want...in fact the amount wanting what you want is so small no company will waste the resources on it. So Rift succeeding = the actuality about what most people want to see more of.

And yet you accuse others of not reading the article....Please go back and read the April 1st post, read what it says right under the IGN stamp at the bottom. {mod edit}
Also, Trion is talking about registered accounts not active subscribers. He addresses this in the very first question in the interview. He specifically said that people were still interested post launch and the number has grown...thats it....its is in no way shape or from ACTIVE subs.
Taking bets on how quickly this thread is going to be locked.
I honestly feel bad if the only article claiming that Rift has such a high amount of subs is that article that happens to be on April 1st.
at least that article doesn't use the term "Accounts", it says it is being played by over 1 million people.
Its also the only one, its not official and its from april 1st.
Maybe you missed the "All stats courtesy of Trion Worlds" attribute at the bottom? .......... and claiming it to be an April fools joke because it doesn't support your argument is a bit silly. It clearly isn't an April fools joke but an extract from a Trion press release

I give up..............
1.6 million accts doesn't mean much, for all u know it could be 1.6 mil accts with 1.4 mil unsubscribed.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)
Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!
