Now we will hear literally endless versions of "but those aren't active accounts!"... ^^ Just as we do when ever WoW's 12 million plus numbers are mentioned.  At least certain types are consistant.... ^^

Read a nice article on that 12 million actually being around 7 million, using a bunch of statistics. It was a pretty damn good article!

Yeah, WoW's 12 million numbers are stretched. PR numbers usually are.

.. But in a good way.

WOW very specifically defines a subscriber as ANYONE who has paid money in the past 30 days to play the game.  In EU and USA, this is about 6 million people paying $15.   In the east, they pay by the hour in most cases.   So the argument could be made that half of those ´subscribers´ are asians who only payed for 1 hour in the last month.  However, that is very unlikely since asian servers have very active servers, their AH´s are similar to the AH´s from USA servers and their raid progress is similar to those in the USA.   There is nothing but ´wow haters´ that indicated that eastern players play less hours than we do.

The PR statements from Blizzard are PR.. of course they want to include the asians markets to make the number as big as possible...  but they clearly state what they define as a subscriber.    They also in the past have a few times broken down the locations and it was always about 50'50  east to west.   That is very unlikely to have shifted towards the east since there hasn´t been a successfull launch of a western game in 4 years.. but there have been a few games that have done well in the east (aion).

Also, a thing to keep in mind about this Rift number...  When beta was first announced, you had to create an account just for a chance to get into the early beta.  This lead to a lot of people creating multiple accounts for a better chance at getting in (before we knew that it would basically end up and open beta).   The fact that Trion threw out hat meaningless 1M number at launch just reaks of funcomish marketing techniques.  They very easily could announce client sales, or subscribers,  instead they used the bogus number that means nothing except people wanted to play a free game in beta.

I wonder how many of these 1.6 million accounts are gold farmers and dummy accounts made by Trion.
    Or just an outright lie.

I don't trust subscriber reports from the party that stands to make a profit off of the higher number. The temptation of greed is too strong in today's world for honesty to even be considered.

I may be dead wrong though, and I don't really want to be right, but lately my trust wears thin.

Because a lack of innovation succeeding means we'll see more of the same crap for the next 6 or 10 years. RIFT failing may not send the right message to new developers trying the same formula, but at least it won't be sending more of the wrong message.

Rift succeeding = bad for future of MMO's, it sends the signal that the wow formula can work well for other polished turds. Rift failing = less bad for future of MMO's, it sends the signal that the wow formula has only, so far, worked for wow (after repeated attempts to copy it).

I get it you don't like this 'type' of mmo. But do you even read what you are writing? The game you are looking for will never exisist, if I said it once I've said it a million times, no company is going to spend the money to develop a game that is any good for a small portion of the mmo community. Not everyone wants what you want...in fact the amount wanting what you want is so small no company will waste the resources on it. So Rift succeeding = the actuality about what most people want to see more of.

No no, you misunderstand. The games I love do exist.

I loved FFXI and only quit because new content wasn't being added. With 14 coming, I was sure that regardless of what they said, 11 was dead. 14 has flopped and so 11 might be saved, or 14 will be saved or SE will just drop out of the mmo market for a few years.

I loved WoW for several years until I got tired of the grind and enough friends had quit that I had almost no reason to stay. I was cranking out alts because it was fun for a time. Once WoW got boring, the last thing I wanted to play was WoW which, in my opinion, RIFT = WOW. Betas just saved me some cash.

Please don't assume that just because I don't want to play WoW and copies-in-denail that I can't like the games that do exist. It's also hard to guage how large the community that doesn't want WoW is because noone is seriously courting them.

    * * *

I also wanted to play DCUO and wasn't able to get it at release. This turned out to be fortunate as pretty much everyone who has played it has said it has too little content. That would have frustrated me quickly after hitting cap.

Spec'ing properly is a gateway drug.

So just because you don't like this type of game, you want RIFT to fail?

Now here's a the thing mate: Big investors don't like risk, there's a reason that mainstream games are not very innovative and very similar to other games in their categories. So even if RIFT fail, big wow clones will still be popping up. So what you're doing here is just a waste of your time, instead of wishing RIFT to fail you should do something else that actually is beneficial to your wish like supporting indie MMORPGs(where all the innovation come from). What? You can't play a MMORPG if it's not an AAA game with huge subscriber base?

Seriously if this is what you debate it's sad. THE GAME IS SUCESSFUL!!! If you don't like it, stop effing talking on these forums.  If you do, then good for support!  It doesn't matter how many accounts it has, the game has done well of many different fields.  I enjoy it, and many others do.  Then there is a lot of people who don't.  But I hate to say it, on games I don't enjoy, I don't waste so much time defaming in forums.  That would just be a sad devotion to hate.  Good luck finding the game you're looking for!

You can bash back and forth all you want guys with your "logic", if you actually read OP interview it doesnt really say anything. He doesnt say active subs nor does he say registered accounts. All is assumptions. Fanboy logic wants it to be 1mil+ paid subs while hater logic wants it to be registered forum accounts (lol). Arguing here wont really sway any side will it.

Only if you argue one point.  Coming to these forums to defend a game you actually enjoy makes a lot more sense than continuing to post and respond on a game forum for a game you pretend to hate when you've either not played it or really just not enjoyed it. If you don't like it, great!  Warn some friends them move on.  Please don't spend time obsessing.  But if you do enjoy it, do the same and give the facts why you support it.  That to me makes more sense than trolling a game forum for a game you don't enjoy.

How do you account devs still making "wow clones". The last five years name the clone thats has had 1 mil subs longer than 1-3 months. Aion a wow clone?Because its the only one with + 1 mil subs. Just because a mmo fails doesnt  make devs stop making them so your logic is flawed.Rift succeeding  isnt because its a "wow clone" ,its because its fun and well polished. In closing future for mmo's succeeding is in the fun factor and polish but this is my opinion not fact.

    The following statement is false
    The previous statement is true

theres nothing like saying x game will fail because its like game y.... instead we should try for game z... even if we don't like it.. because its innovative.. and new..  but MMO's arent necessarily about reinventing the wheel.. its not about technical brilliance.. its about creative application.. and .. thats just my opinion too.. Rifts success doesnt mean the end of the world (MMO's at least) just as WoW didnt destroy MMO's (unless they were rubbish and really shouldnt have been released in the first place...) people will always vote with their feet (wallets) good games thrive.. bad ones die..  mediocre ones.. cling to existence.. a games success really isnt decided by innovation.. but whether the players think its worth their time.. and money.. to play it.... if it isnt fun. then.. who cares? image

well i have a 3 month account because i feel the game has good possibilities and trion this gives trion a chance to repair  the game.

however, espically on generic forum like mmorpg.com , information is important.

if like you said only fanboys post then it will give a false impression of the game to would be buyers.same as if only trolls posted.

it is important  for people to know the good and bad about a game.

And since this is mostly based on people's personal view then both sides should have a free hand to post .

7 pages with the same rambling and guessing of sub number we've had all along... ye I think any would be buyers are really interested in that =))

    edit:

Nothing new has come up about the game in the last couple of weeks. Every thread made is the same old Rift "hate" with a twist from trolls claiming to "play the game and enjoying it BUT..." or the ppl who just plain dont like it for whatever reason most of which could've been researched beforehand (its too wow-ish, it has no pvp focus etc). If there's ever a new thread with an ACTUAL ISSUE with the game, I'll be very interested idd.

Actually this entire thread has no merit, as nowhere I can find did Hartsman mention 1.6mil accounts. Is this thread just another flamebait? Is it some kind of pr stunt to keep the buzz going? One can only speculate...

  • VolgoreVolgore Member EpicPosts: 3,872

I read the whole interview and couldn't find 1.6mio mentioned anywhere -perhaps it got edited afterwards, whatever.

That said, i guess only the very hardcore fanboys would believe that Rift actually has 1.6mio actively played accounts, translating into 1.6mio actual players on the servers -common sense regarding PR drivel and a look into the forums tells everyone else otherwise.

could not find it myself by the way.

well i have no data but some rift servers feel very very empty though, while some feel pretty packed kind of reminds me of EQ2 before the first server mergers.some servers well full of life while some even the tumbleweed felt lonely.
