OK, first I'm not a fanboy (despite someones protestations otherwise).
Main reason for many player's dislike it's that it's buggy, very buggy
And of course there's no PvP.
Third downpoint is the fact that it's very hard to solo decently ijn EQ 2
Positive sides are good graphics and of course lots of classes. (4 archetypes, with each three classes, with each 2 subclasses).
And of course, what many people see as a downside is SoE, who seems to have screwed up EQ1 (dunno that, cos I never really played it much)
------------------------------------------ Basil Fawlty: [to telephone operator] I've been trying to get through to the speaking clock... Well, it's engaged... Well, it's been engaged for ten minutes. How is this possible? My wife isn't talking to it.
I've had a lot of fun in the game. I've yet to encounter any large amount of bugs. Also they just added a bunch of solo quests. The best thing to do is try it. Don't worry about what I or anyone else says, if you like it then play it.
Aye, I was pretty lucky with the bugs too. But I don't have the spare time to invest in EQ 2; Shame really, since it seems to have potential
------------------------------------------ Basil Fawlty: [to telephone operator] I've been trying to get through to the speaking clock... Well, it's engaged... Well, it's been engaged for ten minutes. How is this possible? My wife isn't talking to it.
Not having PVP aside. I don't like it because there is too much restriction on what you can do. They also trivialized dying. Therefore, removing the fear evocation that EQlive had where death had meaning. In other words, to me, it plays like a single player game.
I have active subscriptions to both EQ2 and World of Warcraft. And for whatever reason I seem to play WoW more. It might be because I'm a casual gamer as opposed to hardcore. EQ2's repetitiveness seems to be much higher then World of Warcraft... thats the main factor that I can notice.
Then there is the graphics. I have a pretty good computer and can not view Everquest 2 well. That coupled with the artistic style of the character/armor models makes it kinda just bug me. I much more prefer WoW's brighter, more stylized graphics to the attempt at photo-realism with an odd flair.
Then there is the ability to actually solo and feel like I'm progressing through the game, I don't get this feeling much in Everquest 2.
But supposedly World of Warcraft is short, where Everquest 2 is long. So we'll see if in a few months, when/if I'm at the end of WoW if I end up returning to EQ2.
I agree with most of what has been said already but I do have to add this..
Buying and selling off of fellow PCs is garbage!
If I want to sell something of mine auction style.. I have to set up shop in my house and sit there. I can't turn my computer off, I can't go and fight, I sit there.
If I want to buy something, I have to go to a broker. He shows all the items that people have as they sit in thier houses. I can buy off the broker, but it's a markup of what.. 15% was it? If I don't want to pay the extra coin, I have to walk to the persons house and buy it.
Lets not forget when I you go to school/work in the morning and SOE does their daily server fixes or your ISP does a late night/early morning reboot, you stop selling. I was coming home a couple times at lunch (yes I'm a junkie) to set up shop again.
You don't know how refreshing it was to go to WoW, go to the Auction House, put my stuff up, and go play the game! Whats this? I can actually turn off my computer, come back later and my wares are still selling?
Seriously.. what SOE did with EQ2's auction style selling (and why??) is way beyond me.
I couldn't tell you why EQ2 sucks but from reading under your avatar you say youre waitng for a few other games. Well Dark and Light is out in April so I wouldnt bother getting into EQ2 just to pass the next 4 months. Just concentrate on your schoolwork or something :P

I think I have the perfect example of why "EQ 2 sucks" despite it's beautiful graphics, great ideas, and easy to use controls...
You die in the game.... and you then have a golden "ray of light" leading you back to your "corpse" or ehhh "soul" in EQ2 to regain your lost experience.
... Talk about pampering an mmo for complete newbs. Omfg. Personally I like a little (okay a helluva lot) more challenge then this.
No challenge = no fun. Period. Regardless of the breath-takingly beautiful graphics, grand scope, and technology. No challenge = No fun.
So basically EQ2 is boring. That's right. B - O - R - I - N - G ! Got it?
It really is sad that twiddeling your thumbs while waiting to be seen in a doctors office is actually more fun then is EQ2, especially considering the amount of time, money, and hype that Sony put into this game.
EQ2 is to EQ what AC2 was to AC. A total embarassment, even though each sequel blew the original out in graphics, scope, and all.. neither sequel was 1/10th as good as the original.
And maybe thats the way Lineage 2 was to Lineage 1 as well. I never played Lineage 1, but all I know is that Lineage 2 also sucks in a way even the best downtown Detroit hooker couldn't "suck"

That's a stupid remark. Ok, so you're not a newb to MMorpg-ing anymore. But there will always be people who are jjust beginning with the genre. So you wan't to drop them into a game that doesn't offer stuff for newbs? Now THAT would be a good way to kill of the genre

Even with the back-up of the article, you still sound like a elitist. you sound like "bah, that's a game for noobs. I'm much too good for that" OK, so many people don't enjoy the game, but many others do enjoy it. Who are you to judge? Who is the guy in the article to judge? Nobody. Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS) Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
All I am hoping is that te first expansion pack opens up PVP zones with a persistant war for territorial conquest. Qeynos versus Freeport. If you buy the expansion you are PvP enabled to other people who have the expansion in the opposing city.
This was I can invade Freeport and kill me some ugly evil people.
Aye, PvP would be a definite improvement for the game. Most MMorpgs today have it . Those without PvP will probably go down anyway.
However, what I cannot understand is people keep posting threads like "why does this or that game sucj" and "why this is better than that". Such threads are childish and should be locked on sight.

I consider that as a major failure knowing SOE is producer and the ressources available to build this game. What a waste but not a surprise with SOE.

Tbh, I played during beta and just plain didn't enjoy it...
It's not that EQ2s a bad game, it's just that it's not a particualry good one.
There is no real backbone to the gameplay, which is monotonous and quickly becomes tedius.
The quest are pretty nice, and some are fairly original, but they too just become repetitive after a while.
I can see why people do play EQ2, simply, it is fun at times...
I would advise you to try it, you may find you love it, and if you don't,just slip it on eBay.

Good things: Graphics, better then average production quality (Not many games are as good as EQ2 generally, we dont have huge choices to pick from).
Bad things: No PvP, not enough features(things to do, social hierarchies, war, love, revenge, getting drunk and playing cards etc etc.).
Even with the back-up of the article, you still sound like a elitist.

Wish beta 2.0 was much better than many released games. This game was closer to finishing time more than its EQ2 close now.
"even with Mutable Realms and Wish not being available anymore"
This means Mutable Realms had problems, not the game itself.

EQII does not suck. Some people just are not patient enough to play it. EQII does have quite a bit of staying power, though.
