Not that I condone or justify what he did in anyway but...
4-6 years away from this all being perfectly legal... 3 years away from being able to drive... hopefully it makes you think.
I find it disgusting how much Alex is made out to be soley responsible for all of this. I see:
A) A 12 y.o. making HORRIBLE choices that are proof of a much larger problem. Do we even know if it was Alex's idea to fake the dearth or did the 12y.o. come up with it?
COMPLETE failure of parenting... COMPLETE
C) Police apathy. If you've stopped him from doing something like this, shouldn't his activities be monitored, especially when purchasing a plane ticket for said area.
D) Air travel responsibilities. 12 y.o. flying without parental consent what? In a different story they made a point of saying they chose that specific airline because it didn't require parentl consent.
E) Everyone for assuming he's an evil pedo. What if fell in love with her before ever knowing her age/what she looked like. You know it's 100% possible if fell in love with her in a complete pure way but lacked the brain to stop himself once he realized that it's socially taboo.
I know I'm going to get torn a new one for this post and everyone will think I'm defending the guy or justifying his actions when I'm not but please, this guy is far from the horror everyone makes him out to be. Hanged? Lynched? Prison raped? Taking it a little too far.

We really need separate forums for every newly launched game. There can be the anti-<MMO> one and there can be the 'what general discussion should be' one. All the lamenting can happen together where each can find solace in like minded can't-move-on-ers leaving the rest of us to actually move forward and discuss meaningful and relevant topics.
A lot of the posts on this thread are more disturbing than anything this moonstruck romantic did. Some of you pillars of society ought to find out what a pedophile is before you start slinging the word around.
But why? It's only the internet and none of it counts anyway, right?
Well said.

AAAAWwwwww, isn't that romantic? Faking her own death to be able to see her WoW love. I bet they spent the night telling each other how 'they wouldn't understand our love anyways'
Arresting the guy for some harmless teenager crush and a bad joke is pretty...{mod edit}.. I bet he'll spent the next 10 years of his ruined life in one of your prisons along with murderers and drug dealers just for the sake of self-rightousness...
*cough* sorry, got carried away there, I shouldn't be shouting, being from germany...

So what you are saying is: its perfectly legal in Germany for an adult to convince a child to run away and live with them?
Other than that you lost me somehow.
Or you just wanted to somehow fit in a bash against America in here.. while also stating than an 18 year old enticing an "at the time" 11 year old to meet up with them is obviously harmless and full of good and pure intentions.
No, but they wouldn't be aressted.
At ages 18 to 21 "youth law" can (and would in this case definitely) apply in some cases. Not that I was an expert on the matter, but generally, if kids (and he would count as a kid) break the law jurisdiction's first goal is to "set him straight".
In this case he'd probably get social work and a psychotherapist; And while I'm all for harsh penalties towards pedophiles with criminal energy (Like 50yo fathers tricking girls into shady dates at busstops) my impression of this case is more like 'well stupid kids do stupid things', he probably learned his lesson already when the police came getting him.

EDIT: Besides: 90% of the responses here are aiming towards 'well, let's break this guys life into bits [he's 18!!], the girl's parents life into bits' and generally stigmatize the two of them as either mindnumbingly stupid or capitally criminal. Now I'm sure that's helping... and US americans wonder why their prisons are crammed with people... *rolleyes*

I think we Americans are hypervigilant against pedophiles, there are actually sad and lonely 18 year olds out there desperate to be wanted/loved by ANYONE.
Seems harmless enough. Nothing sexual happened, allegedy, and they are alright. Dont think the guy wanted to do anything bad, he just seems to not have his head screwed on straight enough to know that a 12 year old is too young for him.
agreed, I not saying that makes it right or anything but 18 yr olds do stupid things. sure he's legally an adult but an 18 yr old is still not very mature. Unfortunately nost ppl are going to agree w/ the majority in this thread & this bonehead move is going to cost him everything, perhaps even his life.

It's quite possible that the guy is under matured for his age as well, but there are laws for this sort of thing for a reason, and the guy really should know better.
I still think it's in large part the fault of the parents. They've obviously not set any online boundries for their daughter. Personally I think it's just asking for trouble to let a minor loose on the Internet without any supervision what-so-ever. There's a reason why parents teach their kids not to talk to strangers, but apparently that gets lost when it comes to online interaction.
For all of you that aren't parents...I have a daughter about that age. I monitor her internet habits, I look through her phone. I monitor her facebook account. Having said that, could she meet some person like this 18 y/o kid, sure she could. Hopefully she would have the gumption to not want to fake her own death, fly a few states over, and try and start a relationship with this idiot.
If you have no children, you really have no clue as to what you are talking about. Every single of my friends have a different situation, some have 2 parents that both work. Others have single parents, with shared responsiblities. Parents definately have a role here, but you are forgetting something. An 18 y/o might not be a responsible adult, however HE IS in the eyes of the US law. Trying to define what this boy's intentions were is irrelevant to the conversation. He ABSOLUTELY has full coupabilty here.
Her faking her own death, etc will never come out as her idea. He set in motion HOW to get her there, WHERE they would start their new life together, and he has apparently ADMITTED this. There is no conversation left to have. I'm not saying this young man is a bad person, however if he did this with my daughter, you can rest assured that it would be me facing the court system, and not him.

The guy's 18. He just got past the "OMG BOOBIES!" stage of life. Should he be arrested? Yes. Prison? No. Give him forced therapy ( should be cheaper then prison anyway. ) and a working term ( pick up trash to help society out! ).
After that put a huge fine on the airline allowing a 12 year old girl to fly alone. Have childcare check into the 12 year old's living situation to see if there's any neglect going on ( even if it's impossible for parents to monitor their child there could still be something very wrong if a 12 year old thinks it's a good idea to travel hundreds of miles to a guy she's never met without telling her parents. Why exactly would you feel the neccessity to go to that length? You would earn your daughter's hatred and you'd face prison charges that prevented you from protecting your daughter in the future. Instead she'd be left alone to fumble about on the internet without your protection, stumbling into the webs of other groomers, and the next guy that contacts her might not be as harmless.
Best bet is just to be there for your kid instead of alienating her with your display of righteous wrath. However misled she might have been, her feelings are as real as any. She needs comfort and guidance, not more suffering.
Based on the limited amount and uncertain validity of the information presented in the article, I cannot and will not jump to conclusions about the guy being a pedophile or a rapist... and frankly... I'd suggest the lynch mob screaming for the death penalty or locking the guy up with hardcore criminals for God knows how long to take a big chill pill and calm the f... down. Really. You're being facepalm worthy.
The thing is, love can make even the most levelheaded people do some seriously stupid things. Take two troubled young individuals (yes, 18 is still young even though you have adult rights when you turn 18) with who knows what other problems the article doesn't mention and you have a recipe for disaster. That doesn't mean it's okay to do what they did, but certainly not worthy of a long prison sentence or even death. All I see with the information presented to me in the article are two individuals who need professional help and some parents who need to start taking responsibility and act like parents (hint: WoW is not a cheap substitution for a nanny or... you know... actually spending time with your kid and finding out what goes on in their life).
I'm a big ol' fluffy carewolf. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

I hope that there is a way to Fix the situation before prison and a lifelong label of Sexual Preadator is attached. I would hate to have to support yet another person with my taxes. Do I think he's pedophile, nah. Do I think he's a lonely maladjusted Gamer nerd, Hell yah. I think some therapy is in order not a trip to a Federal pen.

I don't know if you have kids or not. I personally don't care. Your opinion of how I shouldn't alienate her is admirable. Maybe cool heads would prevail. All I can tell you, is as a father..this man actively pursued, made a set of plans/goals, and set them in motion to persuade her to leave her PARENTS home and start a new life with him. An 11 y/o has no business trying to start a life in an industrialized nation with capable parents to provide for her.
He would know this. He knows he is luring her out of her home and into a situation that he would have control over. If you can't see why I would want to be protective in this, you aren't a man. Have a daughter of your own, and let something like this happen...then you make that assessment. I understand that she is better off with two parents..but what if her and this boy did something that only adults should be doing?
That alone is worthy of ending his life to me. It almost doesn't matter if they did it or not...they were unsupervised in his parent's bedroom in a few states away...after having faked her own death. Imagine the grief/confusion the parents would be experiencing already thinking they lost their daughter..only to find she was lured away by some idiot, for god knows what.

I am not one to believe she is 11 so that means she didn't know what she was getting into. Some people understand things at a younger age than others. I feel she was a victime, but not a hapless victim. She must have realised what was going on was wrong according to law and socially accepted standards.
Same for him, maybe he isn't as mature as most 18 year olds but he should have known. The fact he didn't sleep with her I would give him some slack, but he lost that once I found out the police already stopped this previously and he tried to pave the way again.
The parents may work 9-5 which means they can't monitor everything all the time, but for most kids you wouldn't really need to do that. That being said, all kids are different and no matter how you raise them sometimes they just act on their own accord. So maybe they really are great parents with horrible offspring. You really can't say.
WoW is not to blame at all. It is a game, not social police.
Maybe the parents neglect made it easier for this guy by giving her all the attention through the game/text/etc. (if that is the circumstances with the parents)
I just can't point the finger and black and white blame someone. I think both kids were old enough to realise what they were doing was wrong to some degree (mental retardation not being a factor), I understand the police don't have the resources to monitor every single instance like this (remember they let victims of spousal abuse fend on their own until something happens for the same reason), I understand the parents may not have the time to watch their kids every move.

typical...blame everyone but the people that did the act.
A) does it really matter if it was her's or his...it makes them both stupid...one for coming up with it...the other for doing it.
how often as a kid did you pull stuff over your parents eyes. Say you are going to a friends and then don't...as an example.
C) Police can not monitor everyone all the time. There are not enough police...money...or time...in a day and age when police is being cut and pay being decreased just getting cops that really give a damn about anything other than a pay check is hard to find. If you rely on the police to do everything for you then you should get a good helmet. Police are reactive...rarely do they have the resourses to be proactive.
D) It is easy to fake papers for flying that girl that went to be on a talk show up in NYC from Atlanta showed that.
E) You assume he is not an evil pedo...either way he has no right to being a 12 year old from her parents across states. Just for that he is evil. If he is in love then he can wait other wise he is just a horny perv with no impulse control.
That alone is worthy of ending his life to me. It almost doesn't matter if they did it or not...they were unsupervised in his parent's bedroom in a few states away...after having faked her own death. You know, I was reading this whole conversation on my phone, and I was saying 'as soon as I get there, I'm going to mention the father viewpoint', but I guess you already did.
Seriously, if I'm advocating that he be sent to jail and beaten, it's because I =CARE=. It comes from a place of love, the gentler, more rational side of me, realizing that it is better for society to handle it than me.
Because if this situation happened to me, I'm pretty sure any sane person would rather pick a little bit of being beaten/molested in jail to what I'd want to do to them as a father.
... and I'm not even the real protective parent. Seriously, my wife would probably do things that would make ME wince. :<
Yeah, maybe it's not completely rational, but when I even think of anything untoward happening towards my daughter, this part of my brain just sort of goes 'Oh no. Now I'm going to have to kill somebody.'
I swear, I'm going to have to take my friend's advice and get a tear tattoo, then everytime a boy gets anywhere near my daughter, I'll just start cleaning out some guns and muttering about 'I'm not afraid to go to jail again'. Maybe preemptively scaring the crap out of people will save me from jail time. :T
(This is why we have society, you know. Society says things like 'We'll punish the offending parties appropriately', and then in return, the parents say 'we won't kill every last person who crosses our children'. Yay society and human evolution. Probably a lot less messy that way)
This isn't the place to discuss the pros and cons of the American justice system. If you wish to do that, post a copy of the article in a new thread over in the Religion and Politics forum. This is an article about a crime, granted, but let's not get too deep into it over here. Thanks.

Nietzsche maybe have been sarcastic, but he has some good quotes. I am a low key, level headed guy normally. Luring my daughter to another state and convincing her to fake her own death causes me to not think level headed. Again, people without kids don't get this. Accountablilty and reason are hard to see when you think your daughter is/was harmed. Anyone's opinion of me is irrelevant if I thought someone was deliberately trying to do something harmful to her.
I am not my daughter's friend..I'm her father. She doesn't need a 40 y/o friend. I enforce discipline and set standards for her. Any fool that would attempt to prevent that, I have no sympathy for. I would apply this logic to any parent with their child. I don't tell my friends how to parent their kids, nor do they tell me how to do mine.

I don't think our tastes in what games we're looking for overlap much, and I'm pretty sure sometimes I've seen some of your opinions on issues and thought 'This man is possibly crazy, since he disagrees with me and it is impossible for a sane person to hold an opposing viewpoint from mine', but that just got you friended.
You have your head on straight where it counts in my book, anyway.
I guess not having a daughter is the diffrence. If I could muck the scenario up a bit and place my son at 12 in the little girls shoes ... I would be more enraged at my son than the 18 year old who clearly needs help.
Alex planned the roadtrip, only to have the police catch wind of his travel plans. Due to concerns about the girl’s age, law enforcement suggested that Alex might want to turn around and return home, without even seeing his girlfriend’s face.
What? did he tell the local sherriff 'hey i'm off to see my underage girl a few states over'

He's fixin to get all the Love'in he never wanted...Ok with that bit of dark humor out of the way
I hope that there is a way to Fix the situation before prison and a lifelong label of Sexual Preadator is attached.

I like your quote CactusJack ...
I think it applies to your last statement a bit.
"Convictions are more dangerous foes of truth than lies."
typical...blame everyone but the people that did the act.

My sons 19, soon to be 20.
I guess not having a daughter is the diffrence. If I could muck the scenario up a bit and place my son at 12 in the little girls shoes ... I would be more enraged at my son than the 18 year old who clearly needs help.
My perspectives probably unique though.
