Yes, it's true most mmorpg.com forum goers are themepark fans, but there's really no reason to come into this forum and shit on mortal online.

I don't go into the WoW forums and complain that there's no player housing, and you can't loot the players you killed.

If that is true then I will definitely check the game out again.

Can anyone confirm this? Not that I don't trust you/believe you OP, its just generally nice to have a second opinion that can verify the statement in question.

Honestly, it should take less then a week to do max your stats, max your skills, and learn how to ride a mount in Mortal Online.

If your a veteran player starting a new character it should take you a few hours to max your stats, maybe a day or two to max your skills because you already know what to do, and were to go.

You mean the four most popular MMORPGs in the world right now are in the top ten on an MMORPG-dedicated website's list? That's just incredible, I almost don't believe it.

Edit: Sorry, four of five. I'd say EvE is still more popular than Rift.

At the time of MO's release until, oh, around 2-3 months ago I heard nothing but terrible reviews about this game.  So, I obviously avoided it like the plague.  However, recently I've been hearing better and better things, bugs getting patched, new content added, and etc. Now, there's still the odd post screaming at the game, but that's not unacceptable imo.

Now the OP posted a good review of the games improvements, I was interested. Then as one reply linked, the OP had posted another review bashing the game for it's bad features at launch. So, we have someone who hated the game, then came back, and really enjoyed it.

So, This post, and several others considered, I think I've been convinced to try the trial this weekend.  Hopefully I enjoy it. If I remember, I'll post my opinions of the trial on this thread in a few days =)

Yes.. you can do what he says.

Which is kind of why I have always scratched my head about how they start a new player with zero skill in such basics as running and jumping.  When you start you literally cannot run for more than 2 seconds and you cannot jump over a pebble.   The reasoning is that this is a "hardcore" game.  Yet.. as stated in this thread, you can max your character in a few hours so that kind of defeats the purpose of starting out in such a pathetic state...

That's just my take on it, but I have great hope that DAWN will change all this and actually make the new user experience fun!

You do realize that it takes like 20 minutes of chopping wood or mining at the very beginning of the game to DRAMATICALLy increase your noob character's run speed right? It doesn't take any time at all to improve these things... what are people complaining about?

  • mcrippinsmcrippins Member RarePosts: 1,642

I've been playing this game for the last few days. My first day was really tough, as I was learning everything I could about the game. I made some early mistakes, and realized I needed to remake my character. Mostly for stat cap adjustments/lore. So the 2nd day was a lot better. I have a few minor gripes about the game, but most of it, is that the game is not noob friendly. The 2nd day I was able to surpass my progression of my first character by about 10x. Once you learn the core mechanics of the game, and learn to bank anything thats even semi important to you, you will be better off.  I also had crashes on startup the first day. I had to play with the video settings quite a bit to get something that was stable. I actually have a pretty nice computer, and strangely enough.. I think my biggest problem is that im not running on a 64-bit OS. I was informed by one of the GMs that if I had 64-bit, things would run better. Not really a big deal though. I haven't crashed once since I tweaked my video settings. I've met some really helpful people, and the game is pretty fun. I've been killed a few times, but I bank everything that was important, so I didnt lose anything. Just pk'd by random scrubs who like to kill noobs.

Because it makes a very poor first impression... and serves no logical purpose.  For a game that prides itself on "realism", it does a poor job at the start of the game.  Pretty much every adult male would be able to sprint for more than 2 seconds and everyone older than 2 should be able to jump over a pebble...  If every new character needs to spend their first half hour chopping wood to be able to walk like a normal human being it indicates a design issue.

Hopefully it is all water under the bridge though as I have great hopes for the changes promised with DAWN!

It's good that everyone is looking forward to Dawn. However, from my experience with MMOs, I hope people are expect many bugs along with this expansion release. It's going to happen. Don't expect a flawless game after Dawn.

Good point, couldn't agree with you more. Honestly, i don't think anyone is expecting a perfect release (though some people are pretending they are... not 100% sure why)

Well, as I stated earlier in this thread, I was going to try the trial version and report back my findings. Here's from about a good half a day of playtime.

After a large download (Surprisingly long..6-7 hours give or take 1 on a fair internet connection) But, that went smoothly once it started. Got into the game, had a small problem with the character creation screen (Apparently it uses a different internet port or something, and I had to disable my firewall for a second to let it go through) but after a search on the forums, that got solved.

The character creation was nicely done, and having watched a video guide I got through that easily, and it seemed like I understood what was going on.  Once in the game I struggled slightly on what to do, but some searching and some forum browsing quickly led me to what I needed.  So today I've been gathering wood (Tedious, but strangely not that bad as it's working towards a visible goal) Killing rabbits (They run away from me -_- )  And weasels (They bite my ankles -_-) And getting eaten by wolves (It owned my noobie face)

I've had absolutely no bugs, only 1 server restart for like, 5 minutes? And no real problem figuring out what I need to do, with the help of the forums and wiki of course. (Alone, without any external resources I would be completely lost, so, that's one fault with the game right there imo) The graphics are excellent in some regards (Sunrises, Sunsets, Torches, Weapons) And moderate in others (Buildings, trees, shrubbery)

My only worry is that my skills will be limited on the trial before I get to experience all that will convince me to actually buy the game.  I don't expect to be near maxed with the skills, but I definitly want another 4-5 days before I hit any caps (With steady progress) before I make my decision.

Well, having done as I promised, I will now probably continue playing for a bit and debating if it's worth my 40-ish dollars to buy the game. I'm hoping to make my character an archer for main combat, duel wieldiing axes as back-up, a bowyer for my own weapon, and I want a nice pet. A bear. I saw a dude with a bear today. I want one...But first! More wood -_-

I asked this before, but i feel like I should ask again. I want to play MO again, but I'm afraid it's going to die. Is the population high enough for pvp and actual fun? I remember last time I played a few months ago, I ran around and only saw one guy for like an hour.

I think his point is, even if he bought WoW a year ago and found out he didn't like it, he still wouldn't be consistently posting criticisms on WoW's forums.  He's just saying

so you want a maxed out character from the start? the game is not a simulater, it has features like weather, food and drink system, sleep, etc which takes stuff from real life.

I doubt mo prides itself when it has magic, dragons, trolls and made up creatures???

the whole point of starting with nothing is so that its tough on you, personally i loved every second of logging into the unknown, not knowing anything, not being held by the hands.

sure its tough as hell, but mo doesn't target a general auidence, and thats what puts the game in the hardcore catagory, cause the average person may find the game extreme where another believes the game is doing it right.

Of course they care about the new player experince, thats why they bringing in a tool tip tutorial system where you get infomation when you do a action for the first time, which may help others who finding it hard to grasp the games mechinics but yet like the games approach, get into the game more.

I've always wondered why so many people defend a very badly made game where 99% of the time the developers don;t even care.  As explained in other posts and not just on this forum, they seem to be happy to take your money and laugh, all teh while issung the excuse..   it's not our problem it's the other guys responsibility.  As for a dawn "expansion", surely you mean patch right?   Patches and expansions are two wholly different things.

kinda reminds me of Aion, how you start off as a base archtype and then at level 10 you get to become your actual class. it was completely pointless, it took like what an hour or 2 to get to level 10? why not just start out as your main class without the 2 hour filler. just seems odd to not be able to jump over a pebble as you said, and not sure how chopping wood would make you run faster?

i will say i've wanted to see what all the fuss was about with MO but i can't play first person games because i get motion sick :/

Warsaurus, I would not dual weild if I were you.  Yes you can hold weapons in each hand but it is not effective at all.  I tried that in my trial and every person who killed me contacted me and asked me why the hell I was dual wielding.  I do not think proper damage is implemented yet for it.  I also did very little dmg with a torch in my hand.

Basically from experience dual wielding is more for looks than actual fighting right now.

funny, the reverse doesn't make you wonder... why some people attack a game on that games forum...? I mean, the people defending it are here because they like MO and wanted to discuss it; people are always gonna defend what they like. Why come to a forum and attack the game?

Also, if SV was gonna tak our money and run, they'd have done it already

You mean the four most popular MMORPGs in the world right now are in the top ten on an MMORPG-dedicated website's list? That's just incredible, I almost don't believe it.

Edit: Sorry, four of five. I'd say EvE is still more popular than Rift.

And the most popular beer in the US is Bud Light. So really what's your point?

2/4 games listed, while yes they are both very polished, are hand holding care bear themepark games. Hell, one of them has resorted to bribery in order to get more tanks to play. I HIGHLY doubt that SWTOR or GW2 will be much different in that department. With those budgets it would be suicide to make anything halfway challenging. Then the drones wouldn't play.

Mortal Online is definitely not perfect, far far from it. But it does possess a certain charm that a decent bunch of people want to experience. Some of us are against quest helpers, tutorials and boss mods. Some of us want a little more out of our MMO. Some of us actually want an MMO experience. Not just a solo friendly experience. Some of us want to drink a 100 IBU imperial IPA, not a watered down adjunct mess of a lager.

I just recently started playing MO and I have to say I like it quite a lot. There is a sense of community and danger that hasn't existed in MMO's in a long time. Your home city MEANS something. Your armor MEANS something. The relationships you develop MEAN something. It's quite a different experience than anything that is out right now.

This is a great point, and one that I think is all too often lost here.

People play games for a number of reasons.  Overall, I'd say most play any particular game because of the type of experience it offers.  Mortal Online provides an experience that is pretty rare within the MMO space right now.  Some are looking for that type of game, others aren't.

For those that aren't, there are a ton of other games available.  As one that is looking for that type of semi-realistic, sandbox experience, MO gives me the type of gameplay and world that I find most enjoyable in an MMO.  And, not only has it improved, but it looks like the Dawn expansion will improve upon that sandbox experience.

I'm not sure why there are those few people within the MMO community that believe a game shouldn't be allowed to exist if its gameplay doesn't appeal to them personally.

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

I basically ragequit. Those were like the worst spent 50€ in my game-life. I promised myself to never look back and never play that crap again.

However, after reading good stuff here and there, I decided to give it a chance and I reactivated my account. After spending this weekend playing the game, all I can say is: oh my god! This game is great now! :O

Coming from Darkfall, I'm really LOVING the almost zero grind that I have deal with in order to increase my stats. I'm being honest with you guys that in less than 8 hours of gameplay I was able to cap my attributes, start reading some books, get my combat skills +50 (some of them almost 100) and learn to tame and ride a mount. As people were saying, it looks like I'll be able to play with veteran players in less than a month. Great!

Also, I'm playing the game on a Q9550 and a GTX470 with 4GB of RAM. I can play the game in full settings with DX10 with almost no drops in framerate... considering I couldn't play the game when it was released without crashing every 10 minutes, Starvault definetly has improved the engine.

So, here I am, getting some rocks to craft some gear, and enjoying my return to this game. I'm really glad to come back, Mortal Online is starting to become the sandbox we all (or at least I did) waited for. Can't wait to see what's next with Dawn!

PD: Sorry for my english, I know it isn't perfect :P

Please can you say what you actually find different? I also played at release and I did all of those things you mentioned, its not like the grind or skill system has changed. I don't think you mentioned anything new.

Hopefully the lag has been fixed and is mostly from what I read. however seems to me that there is still not really much content, and even after reading up on dawn it seems abit weak to me personally. I mean for example what is the use of horse genetic system without the actual breeding system which is to come in the future. none but some visual diversity.

I think its kind of sad they are still adding "placeholder"  content this far after release, and things we thought we'd see at release such as tindrem are still not in.

Just a note: the skill system did change somewhat a few months ago when they increased the number of "learn by doing" skills, how some of the skills advance, and how skill books work.

Also, combat has improved markedly since launch.  It is quite precise at this time.

I agree that the genetic system will be more useful when the breeding skill is in the game, but I'd hardly call it a "placeholder".  It is the foundation upon which breeding will be built, and will offer some variety in mounts even before breeding is in.

Personally, I think the Task system will add a lot more to the game than people realize.  The additional PvE won't hurt, either.  Better guild functionality will be great for the guilds as well.

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
