I know there was a lot of speculation, but the specific class name 'Engineer' and what globally his strengths would be, that was something that was already known to some people before the reveal of thoday? If so, how is that possible?

Um I don't think so, I'm pretty sure it was all pure speculation.

yeah I wasnt a sure thing only thing was hints and engineer was a name that was tossed around as sounding the most guild warsish...
But as knowing ahead of time, When the ranger was shown people asked if he used guns as well, When Anet said NO they also stated that there will be another profession who primarly uses guns...This was thought to be the engineer and since signs point to the mesmer (those which have been listed tons of times) Engineer always seemed like a good fit.

I'm kinda surprised that the engineer is almost exactly the same as I imagined it would be.. oh well. Another few weeks of waiting for the mesmer.

Hmm. I admit I have followed the GW2Guru discussions only globally, but would Artificer or Musketeer or Sapper (although that last name, admittedly, doesn't sound as hot) not have been appropriate and valid as well as name speculations?
Or maybe the ANet devs changed it to Engineer as definitive classname after following the discussions about possible names

Exactly what I was thinking! The whole metal and firearm thing REALLY goes with the charr! When I roll an engineer, it's going to be a charr
Yep, it's totally a charr thing. I was amused at someone noting that they couldn't really see a sylvari being an Engineer, well, of course not. It's thematically a charr thing, just like the Guardian is thematically a human thing.
Having charr Engies running around placing turrets and throwing flashbangs is going to be amazing!

Hmm I can see artificer, but I don't think the others would adequately describe the profession. Artificer to me sounds more like someone who carves wood, or creates toys or something.
Asuran Engineer for me! Makes total sense they would embrace this profession, they already have an obsession with magical engineering. Gonna love having my little Asuran running round blowing up stuff, can't wait

i think the engineer was more obvious to guess than the mesmer. one of the remaining silhouettes on the professions page is a charr holding what could be a shotgun.

Yeah, and the interesting thing here is that the guns in the Black Citadel video, the ones that look like a charr racial, were shotguns too. And powerful ones at that. It really wouldn't have made any sense with the charr level of technology to not have had an engineer to act as a foil to all the magicks floating around.
The class sounds good, but I wasn't impressed by the video. If it plays ANYTHING like a robotics from GA, then this will be my class of choice, but I'll have to see as more information becomes available.

Well that is just awesome looking. Anet is 7 for 7 on interesting classes imo. This class looks like it will be easy to get into and a lot of fun mastering. It looks like when GW2 comes out I'm gonna have to let my friends & family know in advance that if they don't hear from me for awhile not to send a search party that I'm just playing GW2.

One thing I can't recall: can all the races play all the classes?
Will professions have racial restrictions? Will some sort of racial bonuses bind a race to one profession to be effective?
All professions will be available to all races. Racial skills are the only ability changes granted by a character's race, and while these will allow characters to do things their profession can't, they will be weaker than similar profession-specific skills.
Yeah, all races can play all professions. This was covered in one interview where it was pointed out that some race & profession combos won't be present as NPCs, because it won't fit thematically, but the player will be able to choose whatever they like.
Now, the likes of a charr guardian, a human engineer, and a norn thief (big bloody thief!) seem really silly to me, but that won't stop players from choosing them. Some will just look better thematically, for example, the Engineer most thematically fits the charr, due to the charr being the only race who's actually advanced enough in technology (as opposed to magicks) to actually be able to produce the tools they're using. So all equipment for engineers will come from the charr, anyway, since some of the races are still equivalent to the dark ages.
And likewise, the Guardian profession seems very much based on faith, and thus not something a race that's entirely atheist would use, so the charr won't have Guardian NPCs. But that doesn't mean that the player can't play a charr Guardian, however silly that is. And likewise, I can't imagine a giant, burly norn being particularly dainty or quiet, they'd be like a bull in a china shop, not to mention that the notion of a thief goes against the Norn ethos, so I don't think there'll be norn Thief NPCs, but again, that won't stop a player being a norn Thief.
So it's mostly just thematic stuff, and how much you care about the lore.

I think Mesmer and Engineer have been thrown around, for the last few months at least, as the remaining classes.

I called it! I've been saying it would be engineer for months, hahaha! It had to be, nothing else would make sense.
Wheee.
Off to watch the video, now.
(Yeah, no surprises there for me at all. That's pretty much exactly what I was expecting, turret and all.)

I believe that's true. At least those are the two proffesions I've been seeing on the top guesses list.

Eat me!
Oh, I'm in love with those wallpapers.
This really is the charr thing, this is what the charr were meant for, but I'm still going to have my Mesmer. :P

Too much like the commando. And its anticlmatic to reveal the new profession first. Now we know last profession is mesmer. No surprise. It's borring.

Make sure to read this wartower interview, answers a lot of questions.
