What part of "we are sticking to normal MMO game-play conventions" (paraphrase), did people not get? This is what they basically said when they announced this title. I for one expected WOW/EQ like combat. My expectations were met with what I saw, so I can't say I am disappointed.

FEAR NOT MY FRIENDS. If you want a lot of crouching, jumping, sommeraulting, play smuggler class! By far the most active combat of any MMORPG ever.
Hardly that, but I am glad you like the class.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
If you want action rpg combat or a more "twitch" base game I suggest avoiding themepark MMORPGs. If you expected something else you are just kidding yourself.
Also if you look at a cinematic and actually think the gameplay will be even remotely similar you probably should re-evaluate that stance a little bit. Games always have over the top cinematics. Every MMORPG ever pretty much has had them, and it won't change. It is a fun and entertaining way to promote games. People picking on BioWare because they feel that the cinematic does not represent the actual game are being quite silly. It is obvious that those guys are just hating to hate, because every game does that.
Wow the apologists are numerous with this one. This is not the way it has to be, or the way rpg's should be. This is an archaic system that is boring and dying. This game from every video just looks flat out boring. Once the wonder of the IP wears off enjoy hitting up your rotation thousands of times.
After watching the footage I saw almost exactly what I was expecting to see. I can tell I will be satisfied enough with combat to enjoy the game. Adding things like companions and vehicles, and personal ships, and the group & PVP content along with the ME2 style dialogue with the heavy story driven approach and I am going to be good with this.

Who's apologizing? All I see are people who are okay with it and people who are not. There's no right or wrong about it, you either can digest it or you can't. I also don't find every video to look boring, you do, nothing more needs to be added.

I with you all, I mean how dare they force us to use a mouse and keyboard and we have to click buttons to activate our skills. When will these bastards get it, the time of the mouse, keyboard, button clicks is over, they need to just give us our mind reading MMO's already so we can just sit and stare at our monitors and will our characters into action.

Apologists =/ Realists
This game never pretended to be doing anything unique with the combat engine. This game has always been about a standard MMO experience with a Bioware story background. If you've been following this game, you should have realized that about two years ago.
RPGs may have evolved somewhat in combat, but MMOs have not. Every MMO with a unique combat engine has fared poorly with the masses.
What part of "we are sticking to normal MMO game-play conventions" (paraphrase), did people not get? This is what they basically said when they announced this title. I for one expected WOW/EQ like combat. My expectations were met with what I saw, so I can't say I am disappointed.
Indeed the bioware devs have been very straight-forward about what to expect about the game, but it seems their marketing department isnt on the same page. Marketing talks about "heroic" or "cinematic" combat as though its an amazing feature never before seen in an mmo, they show heavily edited gameplay vids that dont really show the game at all, and then they have cg movies that have nothing to do with the game. With that in mind I can understand some peoples dissapointment/confusion.
But I'm like you, I saw exaclty what I expected to see. Because I payed more attention to the devs rather than the marketing machine.
It's all about money. They need that holding hand puppy combat to attract the casual players. The RPG argument is just bad, Age of conan hade GREAT combat and it was still and MMO and RPG, granted the company screwed it up and it was instanced and pretty crappy except the combat. Implement that combat system in a great game (like SWTOR could have been)made by companys like Bioware and the next-gen MMO will be here. This old forumla they will use for this game will always attract more players and more money though, sad but true.
I'll pass on this, competitive PVP really blows without a skill required combat system.

I think it's a bit premature to conclude that SWTOR won't have competitive PvP combat that requires skill, or that tab based combat doesn't cater for skill.
I can recall several examples, where skills played a role even if tab based combat was used. GW used tab based combat and it's one of the MMO's (or CORPG, whatever) that was outstanding in the way how skill and smart combat could make all the difference.

While there's a good bit of exaggeration in the advertising, I take that for what it is; marketing and promotion. Most of the official GP videos as well as trailers basically attempt to showcase the dramatic tale they've woven, and the Star Warsy-ness of quests and/or characters.
With that said, in terms of player expectation. Bioware has kept no secret about their direction with this game, if all people watch and listen to is what's put out by EA-marketing, I won't feel for them when they get let down.
I also should point out most of the complaints are stemming from one play area, Trooper/BH. As they're the ones who just stand around "getting shot in the face". The Jedi professions have a more action oriented presentation IMO, and the Scout classes smuggler/IA, have a more "tactical" one.
When using the trinity there tends to be a stationary fighter who tanks, while the Jedi presentation of this is a bit more believable (Saber deflection/clashing and laser deflection).
The trooper and Bh do have a game-play presented description of why they can do what they're doing, heavy armor from the one spec, gadgetry (shields etc) for the other. It seems they've considered the believability of typical MMO combat and have attempted to give some bit of rationale to it. There's only so much you can do though and scope play's into all things (resources).
All in all it looks good for MMO combat IMO (animations, gadgets and gimmicks).

I thought it was ok, nothing majorly to be excited about. I think this is a game where it may look boring but once you get in it is really fun. I don't know, I guess since they are Bioware I expected alot more than just a traditional mmo.
I agree. I feel much the same; because it is Bioware one expects a bit more. I am sure it will be the best 2nd Gen/WoW-type of MMO with cool story, but combat looks... well functional but not breathtaking. Guess one has to experience it to say for real.

you have to remember there is no autoattack. If the player looks like he is just standing their getting shot in the face then this is due to the player just standing their letting someone shoot them in the face.

Good point. Poor players does not make for a poor playing game.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
Agreed mmo or not it is about the most boring combat I have seen. There is no reason an mmo can't have exciting combat. It should look more like the E3 showing of Warhammer Space Marines in regards to exciting combat.

I believe Mass Effect 2 didn't make use of traditional RPG-combat. Even though it's one of the best RPGs to be released so far.

if you want less static combat, perhaps a PvP server and some PvP action is the way to go lol

It will get to the point that no company will ever make a mmo again, Thay spend millions in creating one then people complain it isent done right,
Id love for the players to design a mmo for a change and see how hard it is then thay might stop complaining.

Game is going to be one hell of an adventure.
If you want over the top combat animations, go try one of those chinese mmo's, i'd prefer a huge deep world and story

I dunno, this guy sort of says the opposite that some are saying

But yes MMO's in 2011 are still following the same code they figured out in EQ
