I know that writing this letter may seem heartless and cold, but I really need to tell you some important things that would be lost in emotion if I told you face to face. We've been together for 8 years now, living as geek and internet spaceship supplier. I hope that still means something to you (it does to me) and so hope that you'll listen to me when I say, now, that we have problems.
You have decided to go chase other kinds of players, the sort with an attention span of a gnat and intellect to match. These guys might wow you with their bulging wallets but - I think you’ll find - they don’t love you for who you are. They won’t help you build worlds. They won’t inspire you, or be inspired by you. They’re not me.
Maybe this is all my fault. I listened to you and trusted you. I told you that I’d like our world to be like this, though I secretly held my reservations.
Goodbye,
Me
P.S. I've cancelled the credit card that I gave you to use

This is what happens when you give your heart to basically what amounts to a John/prostitute relationship. You're giving money to someone who MAKES you think you're the only one that matters. And hell, you believe it when she does her job correctly. Doesn't matter if she's a 2 bit whore on the street corner (F2P mmos) or an uptown escort (P2P mmos). The bottom line is separating you from your money and getting you to come back time and time again.
Some people understand the relationship and what in entails (entertainment and temporary escapism in exchange for money). So they have no issue with paying for a mutual agreement. And some, like the above poster, happen to get so caught up in the dream that they start to blur the line between fantasy and reality. Nothing good can come from misplaced dependency. And more players need to make sure they understand the rules of engagement before they get so emotionally attached. It's always less messy if you retain the power to end these relationships first.
Word.
Although I think it was more intended as an allegory or parody of 'guy breaks up with girl' scene by the writer himself, not that he actually feels it exactly like that.
The reactions of many posters however, based on their comments, show many resemblances with the reactions of those who've been in longterm relationships and been cheated upon, not so much of people about a game they happen to have been playing for a while.

I was in beta of this game, and honestly if they at least had walking in stations i would have been more interested, barring that the game is like playing an excel spread sheet. yawn.
"Now, as our world begins to fill up with cretins and Farmville fans..."
My wife is a Farmville fan who, I can say difinitively, would not play EVE. And if I'm not mistaken this guy just called my wife a cretin. And I'm now supposed to respect his opinion?
p.s. I agree with the farmville remark but falling over just that would be nitpickish.
No one who buys their in game rewards from a cash shop has the right to object to being compared to Farmville users imo.
The author of the letter is exactly right in his attitude towards virtual shoppers.
yeah I read this the other day, I really like it. He really sums it up the feelings of the community. I can't believe CCP actually compares it to buying a real life $1000 jeans, cause it really makes sense to compare real life with a virtual item.

People are still people, whether ingame or irl. There's no logical sense for avatars to have social clothing on them with inferior or even no stats, yet in many MMO's people want their avatars to wear them, out of an extended vanity sense. Same irl where a bag or pants can be just as good looking at 50 to 100 dollars as the ones at 500-1000 dollars, except those don't have the famous label: also vanity and status what it's about.
Regarding those prices, a question to EVE players in general: isn't it so that the game uses an ingame valuta that's equivalent to real dollars, so that you can have the situation that a player has many thousands of dollars equivalent to ingame money? At least, I can recall a news item from a while ago where a player's ship got blown up that was said to be thousands of dollars' worth. I don't believe that he actually paid thousands of dollars in real money to get that ship, so it must be some translation of ingame valuta into real money. I mean, isn't that how some players also manage to pay their subs, with ingame money?
If that's the case, then items that are worth hundreds of real dollars but that you can also buy with ingame money aren't that big of a deal.

The problem with EVE is not this Cash Shop. It's far more serious: the lack of content, the lack of choices, and the lack of change. The game changed very little over the years. And the basic game actually never changed.
Once Incarna was out, I started a fresh account on trial (just wanted to see it worth re-sub, after 2 years of absence). When I saw that strange puppet moving slowly in a small room, and the stupid controls, I said: ok, they screw it, but that's not so bad. I don't care about their stupid shop, cause I'll never buy clothes for this zombie anyway.
The next thing I did was to check the market. I wanted to see if they added new skills. Nothing (in fact, all learning skills were gone).
Then, I checked to see if there are new frigates, new assault ships, new cruisers or new battleships. Or maybe new weapons? Absolutely nothing! Zero! Same old Jaguars, Thorax, Ravens...the Retribution was the same useless ship...everything was exactly the same as 2 years ago, 3, years ago or 7 years ago. And not only we have just a handful of ships on the market, but most of them are useless. So all players end up using the same ships, and the same setups. In EVE, character cloning is the undisputed king. Which is boooooring!
And this is an old game, guys! Until now, we should have thousands of frigates, hundreds of cruisers, dozens of battleships for each race! I must admit, I never really liked most of the ships in EVE (personally, I like symmetrical ships) and I always hoped for new, better looking ships to appear on the market. It never happened.
So I decided not to resub, despite Incarna, and I closed the door to EVE. This game is immobile, frozen.
Has the EVE community made EVE great? Absolutely. But if this guy honestly believes that he has anything close to an equal stake in EVE he's crazy. EVE will die like all games die. When it does a lot of people at CCP will be out of a job while this guy will just move on, his life not interrupted at all, his entertainment coming from some other source. CCP will do all they can to make a profit for as long as they can. But this guy doesn't care about them or their families or their livelihood. He only cares about his game staying the way he likes it for as long as CCP can keep the servers running.
Good letter, it seems a bit on the dramatic scale but sums it up over all. I guess I also can say I wrote my breakup letter tonight, but its not as touching as that.
They have made some significant improvements over the years that I have played, but not enough it seems to some. Some things are cool, wormholes, updated graphics on some mechanics and the scorpion did need a complete overhaul. But they went into the Greed is Good direction and it seems that these new projects are taking precidence over the meat and potatoes that has put CCP on the map for all these years.
We will know more after the emergency meeting this week.
My sub is cancelled but runs out in August, I had paid up for the summer. I don't feel compelled to log in right now as things are crazy in the all the local chats and trading hubs.

Excellent post you made me cry, for your feelings and the love you have lost...

All this nerd rage is funny. EVE is a great game. People quitting over this is ignorant and just biting your nose to spite your face type attitude.

The best and only thing to do with micro transactions is to mass quit the game.
NGE for Eve has started...
My gaming blog
this is nothing like the NGE....people are getting their panties in a wad over nothing I swear
