Underwater combat just doesn't do it for me, not in this aspect anyway, its basically like flying combat, just in a realm with slightly different environmental mechanics.
Oil slicks turn into smoke screens but explosions seem the same? No movement penalty is fine, but everyone has gills now?
I dunno, I'm sure it will be more fun when I'm playing it, but it sounds like a very hokey design decision in my opinion.
Thank you i was just waiting to get more info about this, some hear say was telling they have problem with underwater but it seam everything is going well, so thats just nice.
Seam great that you can just jump into water and have a whole new set of weapons/abilities and monsters, pretty neat.
Movement is exactly the same +Z axis, isn't it a bit strange? you would expect things to go a bit slower at least.
maskedweasel, I'm sure you'll have a different opinion once we all get to actually play it. I have always hated underwater stuff in games but this one seems to going for the fun aspect of the game. It may not be realistic but then again, it's a fantasy game we are talking about.
Underwater combat just doesn't do it for me, not in this aspect anyway, its basically like flying combat, just in a realm with slightly different environmental mechanics.
I think thats what making it great honestly. And could have a great impact even in pvp if done well, jumping in water during pvp if you get in trouble and changing everything, i like it.
Thats make me think about what is going on when you float, swim? What set of weapons/abilities you have?

I'm sure you're right, I think its just the matter of wrapping my mind around it. Part of me thinks the underwater combat could have a pretty cool effect on skill tactics.
I love underwater exploration (in RL too) I just haven't seen it done quite like, this, before.

Swimming and flying have many similarities. In terms of gaming, swimming adds z axis like flying does. I'm not really sure what your gripe is, there really isn't much of a different way of doing this.
Oil slicks turn into smoke screens but explosions seem the same? No movement penalty is fine, but everyone has gills now?
Well, I'm not sure how different they could really make explosions, underwater mines have a flashy explosion, the main difference is the massive water displacement the explosion creates. If you look at the screenshots, everyone was wearing a rebreather mask of some sort, so no gills...at least not for engineers.
I dunno, I'm sure it will be more fun when I'm playing it, but it sounds like a very hokey design decision in my opinion.
I have to disagree with the hokeyness. We have different weapons and skills underwater based on profession. It's not limited to a singular area, and there will be numerous opportunities for underwater combat, plus an entire area devoted to underwater exploration. ANet is giving us more options, which is always a good thing.
Woo Hoo, just what I always wanted. To be able to explore under the waves in my plate armor, swining a 2 handed battle ax....yeah, that makes sense.
I am very much looking forward to GW2, TOR, and the Secret World but hyping up this feature would only make sense if there was at least 1-2 distinct acquatic playable races in the game.
Of all the cool stuff I have seen from GW2 this is not a feature that is going to play in my decision to buy the game.
I f you don't like to play SWTOR, then don't. Seriously with all that moaning and moping you do about SWTOR even in non-SWTOR related threads you're starting to sound like someone in a bad marriage where as you haven't even put on the ring yet!
@OP: nice article, thanks for the post. It seems ANet has finally the underwater combat worked and in a splendid way, seems like it'll be great fun. Another big step closer to release, now only the Sylvari redesign and the WvW PvP remain to be disclosed

You won't be able to use a 2 handed battle axe underwater. There are only 3 underwater weapons. The harpoon gun, spear, and trident. (for spell casting) :P

Unfortunately 2-h axes aren't in the game at all.
That makes me really sad, I love 2-H Axes, that was my favorite weapon.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

Mine aswell, have you noticed that there isn't any main protagonist of any game series that actually mainly uses a 2h axe?

This game just seems to good to be true, every game has a weakness, most weaknesses become clear long before launch. However I can't find any for GW2 so far, sure there are things to nitpick about but all in all, GW2 seems to be a solid title from top to bottom. With many innovations to boot.
Something has got to give at some point, all games have flaws, and I hate finding them at release.

What? I don't even... you realise that your post is proof that you didn't watch the video, right? I mean, it's absolute proof.
Gills, you say? Really now? Did you miss the long part of the video where they showed the breathing apparatus and said "This is breathing apparatus, it allows you to breathe underwater!"? Did you somehow miss that?
With charr tech being what it is, breathing apparatus certainly wouldn't be beyond them. Why would they need gills if the video shows them having breathing apparatus to do the same thing?

I'm not generally a fan of underwater combat, but this does look like it could be interesting. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be a gimmick, and actually feels right. I wonder how skills will differ per class, as it sounds like there are specialized skills for underwater combat.

I hate underwater life my shark phobia even extends to games, I always find myself awaiting the Jaws theme to queue when I'm in water. Virtual or not. So I won't touch this content lol. Bad experience as a kid. Plus I have a bad heart :P.

Hmm, another article on the u/w combat... funny how this article is seemingly the supernova that's got the games journos spittling over this game finally?!
Eg this is refined journalism to a fine point!
We can’t wait to get back under the sea, cause, darlin’ it’s better down where it’s wetter–take it from me.

It would be nice if they had a playable amphibian race, if underwater content is that elaborated.

Underwater skills is the only way I can see this working well. Standard skills just wouldn't make much sense when swimming.
