To be honest had the guy not said that ablilities look different underwater, I would never had noticed and thing different other then thy Y axis.
That's because we hardly know the skills. If you look at WoW without knowing any of the skills, could you tell which one was better? Not to mention, the whole design of GW2 is to take your eyes off the skill bar and keep your eyes on the battlefield. It's about playing the field, not the system.
I hate ALL underwater questing in every game to date, especially WOW...which is why I was burnt out of Cataclysm after 3 levels of playing it. I couldn't bare to turn it on again. I was hitting accept, kill, reward without reading anything because I was trying so hard to get out of the water quests..but it just kept GOOOOIIIIINNNGGG lol.
This is the first time that underwater looks somewhat interesting, especially since they are getting rid of that annoying breathing bar. I hated that lol. Maybe I was won over by the graphics and the very cool underwater plants and how they look as you swim through them, but I guess I'll find out when I play. I like different skill sets for under and over water. I would imagine balancing will be a bitch, but watching NPCs change tactics in and out of water was a very nice thing to see :-).
I think she was being sarcastic if you didn't catch it.
Me too, I guess. A sardonic response to my opinion is pretty constructive.
Oh, there I go again.
I have not played a lot of MMOs. I have never played WoW or Aion or Darkfall or anything like that. I did not even know they had underwater combat. I actually thought GW2 was the first. But, this thread is not about those games. It is about GW2. And my opinion was that the underwater combat looked no different than ground combat. I am not ranting at you, to keep in mind. I just do not understand why people cannot express their opinion without being attacked.
The question is, what exactly isn't different? The Z-axis? The way skills work? The way positioning and dodging now has to work? The reason why people react is because they do not agree with that opinion and they feel a need to challenge it. It might be your opinion but an opinion is nothing if left unchallenged.
I'm surprised more people aren't bothered by infinite breath? The danger of suffocating was the most fun part about fighting underwater. Not to mention any bit of realism we can get in today's games is a nice thing to keep : )

God do I hate it when people want realism in games. If you want realism then go outside or play sims. Games are for escapism.

Don't over exaggerate. You can assume I don't mean or want total realism. Of course games are for escaping, but if the game has humanoid races that breath and talk and move just like us, as well as other physics that are present in the real world then it is a bit of an immersion breaker when water dosen't pose a threat to your character.
What if the next bit of GW2 news told you that your character actually floated when you dropped off cliffs?

I suppose you would like it if your character was forced to stop moving and rest every once in a while while moving too. A stupid breath meter would just be a nuisance and get in the way of actually enjoying the game.
I would find it rather stupid if my character floated if I fell off of a cliff. But then again, why would I be going off a cliff in the first place? What does that serve? What kind of content is it?

how characters have unlimited air supply is already explained tho. there's a breathing apparatus. i think that pretty much solves the immersion issue, at least for me.

That's what's bothering me. The fear of suffocating would make the underwater world more exciting. MMOs need more fear. We fully expect to respawn when we die. We always know what will happen.
This is so true....
I remember as a kid playing runescape fearing to go some places, because if you died you would lose your items, this also enhanced the risk vs reward feeling and made rare items dropped from really hard mobs that much more desireable.
I don't play the game anymore, but I do think that this is one of the things mmo's need to take back in, it's too boring when it's all safe, kill millions of "big scary hairy wood spiders" without any fear at all, if you die you just pay to remove your "soul sickness" and head back to give it another go.

You have to understand there is a lot of content going on under the water and making people going for a breath even every 5 minutes would be very irritating - this was a very clean solution
I also hope u know the breathing is via breathing apparatus attached to your mouth (just to explain the infinite breath )
I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them

Eve Online?..oh wait What about Perpetuum? or Mortal Online? or Darkfall? All the fear you can get right derr'. You don't need fear in every game, we've got games that do that quite well already. Maybe they can make it optional for you to wear your breathing App so you can have your fear?

FEAR, we need it!!!
u can't explore deep underwater caves, or cities when u have to go back up for air. i don't believe we've seen underwater combat/exploration in this scale where it's equivalent(probably) to that of land exploration. in the long run, people won't be as immersed as they used to when it was new, and having to come up for air every minute or so will become nothing but a nuisance.
You could keep swimming and hope you reach an air pocket within 4:59 minutes or ... the next air pocket in the underwater cave you've been exploring isn't until the next 6:34 minutes, with the only entrance being left of the forked path you recently passed ... but, you took right. Looks like you're not getting that legendary cache of treasures afterall. But, hey, you left a little gold behind for the next weary explorer.
You're underestimating just how much of the world is covered in water. The developers have said that some zones will have more water than land. We also know that one of the Elder Dragons is known as the 'Deep Sea Dragon', that there are enemies larger than the Shatterer in the depths, that there are whole civilisations there, along with underwater events and the possibility of an underwater dungeon has been hinted at.
Five minutes isn't nearly enough. It'd be like having to stop to use the bathroom every five minutes, or having to stop to snack every two. It'd get tedious and frustrating to the point where it was an obstruction to all the fun you could be having down there.
As far as 'fear' goes, there's room for that in the personal story. The personal story forces players to make irreversible decisions.
"Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right. This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!"
I thought I also read somewhere that there would be different breathing apperatuses with different stats. This would indicate that there may be a timer implemented at some point. We won't know untill a final product is in our hands. I usually don't like underwater content since it is usually just a means to get from point A to Point B or some place I have to go for a quest. GW is making it interesting from the different skills utilized, to the exploration aspect. All that area hiding beneath the surface makes me feel like the world has just gotten much bigger. Just my input.
The world looks beautiful, animations need work as I saw the creature walking on water. Nothing new really. They really need to tone down the particle effects.

Yeah, it's exactly the same as ground combat, with different skills. And a Z-axis. And a different downed mechanic. And different weapons.
Other MMOs do it so much better, where underwater combat is completely different from ground combat.

anyway, i'm surprised noone has posted a link to the video yet(or did i miss it? it's late here ). here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=je0mT7AHKqI
i'm seeing some minor issues with it(mostly animations), but they'll most likely fix them in the polishing stage.
edit: doh it has its own thread. >_> lol knew i missed something... oh well

Haing a lot of content under water is dissapointing to say the least. Just having to do the little amount in WOW became to much.
