I will say as much... I look forward to having nice little "dress-up" items to spice up my avatar with.
And since all this is based of a "internal PM" i'l be to say the least mildly amused if it turns out to be fake or at least taken out of it's context to create a controversy.
Sadly not, it has been fully confirmed, addressed and echoed officially. Nothing has been said to debunk the strategy it unfolded. If it would have been just vanity items they would have told us. It seems they jumped on the slippery slope of cash-shops (mind you: in possibly the best sub based, sandbox game ever) and are intending to ride it all the way.
This all feels like a bit of a storm in a waterglass to me.
To me its more like a military coup which sparked a popular revolt.
But sure... Since we will loose the SWG NGE vets now (or will by dec 15 atleast) we need new blood. *raise glass* Welcome
Aye, we can all look forward to playing Swtor, GW2, ArchAge, TSW (or whatever anyone's hype-poison is), together here
And likely every one of those MMO's will have a sub and cash shop model of some sort, just a matter of what they decide to include in them. Better get used to it folks, or plan on leaving the genre.
It's too early IMO to jump ship from EVE just yet, but of course people are free to quit and go play one of the many other fine sandbox MMO's out there.

It's a shame to see that CCP's greed is going to kill their game. A sub fee required to play, a cash shop on top of that and then microtransactions coming to boot?! Gawddamn CCP, the sub fee should be enough!

What do you mean 'a cash shop on top of that, and then microtransactions coming to boot'? They are the same thing. So basically its a sub fee, and microtransactions.

True, there isn't really a distinction between cash shops and microtransactions, but I do see a difference between a cash shop just offering fluff items and nickle-and-diming people for necessary items like ships and ammo.
I unsubbed last night. My sub ends in August for both accounts and I'm unwinding myself from the wormhole etc.
Every time I start to soften up and rationalize (rational lies) that its just vanity items then I read "monetizing social acceptance in online games" (1) and makes me feel that they had a plan to force players to spend money. I don't feel that gaming should be forced. No hobby should be forced, its a hobby, its for fun.
I realize that all hobbies take a certain amount of invenstment up front and over the long term, yet it feels quite out of balance the way they put it in their little newsletter.
Another thing, the captain quarters actually...suck. It takes me at least 3-5 minutes to dock up while it used to take me seconds. Is that the immersion of "docking into a station and walking to my quarters feel?" Don't need it. Just give me back the give and go system and let me spin me ship again please. Thanks.
Despite what they say I think the newsletter was mainly intended to inform the rest of the employees and not just "personal opinion to spark debate":
"...there are three main areas that virtual goods sales will focus on in the game: cosmetics, items of convenience and items of power."
Nice try.
That quote is NOT from the EvE part of newsletter. Whatever they intend to do in DUST or WoD does not count. The balance of the games are different.
It IS suggested that you could buy ships and equipment, which is mildly desturbing. But then again, when have CCP delivered what they promised?
I still call bull on the whole Rage. We have a shop with vanity items. If we ever get a shop with Pay2Win items, i'll join you, but not one second before.
As I've said before if you wait until it's implemented in the game then you've waited too late. Once it's in it'll never be removed, just ask the SWG vets. The time to voice concerns is now while it's only in the planning stage, not after it's in the game.
I think they may have underestimated this a bit. Many of the vets have multiple accounts, some as many as four or five accounts. Many are cancelling those accounts but hanging onto their main waiting and hoping CCP will reverse thier course. Those multiple accounts give the players a stronger voice than they would otherwise have.
You do know they have a China server right? Of course they will develop this feature no matter what for deployment there.
You cant stop that. This is not comparable to SWG.
What matters is not if they develop it. (They WILL do that for the Asia server) What matter is if they enable it on TQ (the west server).
Besides they allrady HAVE developed it. They could sell Officer Mods and Imperial Apocs tomorrow if they wanted to. You are too late from stopping them.
So, i'll wait and see what they do with it. If they sell Pay2Win items, I am gone. But I just dont think that will happen.

Choosing to sit at idle is the worst possible reaction you could have in a situation like this. This is the time to speak your mind. You won't get the chance later. You would be wise to heed BarakIII's logic, but something tells me you won't.
Fortunately, it appears that a great many EVE players do not share your eagerness to just settle for whatever bullshit is thrown in their direction. The difference between EVE players and your average mmo player is really showing.

Guess how we got CCP to change it's mind, hint, not sitting around waiting for it to be implemented.
Let EVE burn until we get a proper response and not another lame devblog written by a PR person who's never logged into the game in their life.
This is exactly how CCP got into the position they are in today. They gave in far too much in the past, now players think whenever they throw a fit about something, CCP will turn 180 degrees to appease those who speak out.
I think it's clear especially if that email is real, what you say matters not in this situation, it's what you, as well as others do.
I've said many times over the last few days, sitting around complaining while still keeping an active sub is changing nothing at all. The only result is clogged forums with the same comment being posted over and over again, and for what? All of it falls on deaf ears. Especially if you're doing it here on MMORPG.com

CCP is not going to say they will never make a cash shop!
There already is a cash shop. And if it is intended for vanity items only they would have said so.
Why?
Be course they havent decided yet.
Maybe not on the exact details but they do have a distinct strategy laid out for us.
Simple.
What was leaked was a document menat to promote internal discussion on the subject. To say they wont do it, before having made an internal decission either way is silly.
Despite what they say I think the newsletter was mainly intended to inform the rest of the employees and not just "personal opinion to spark debate":
"...there are three main areas that virtual goods sales will focus on in the game: cosmetics, items of convenience and items of power."
"One other service we're looking at is selling faction standings. We want to offer convenience"
"Not all virtual purchases will focus on customization, some will simply be new items, ammunition, ships, etc. that can be purchased outright."
"Thus we will not and cannot focus on virtual sales only within the Incarna evironment, nor build that evironment around such sales, rather we will effect a universal strategy of micro-sales throughout the EVe experience."
Those don't read like just opinions to me.
Also they haven't debunked that they have plans to sell much more than just vanity items. They would have done so as it is one of the main sources of people's discontent.
The nerd rage is uncalled for.
If it has ever been appropriate regarding EVE, it is now.
Funny thing is that with an avarage EvE player active play life between ½ - 1 year, most of the "rage quitters" would have quit anyways before such a change would even get near the live server.
It would be funny if it wasnt sad. The level og stupidity at show in the nerd e-rage on the eve forums is amazing. The few point that are valid are getting drowned:
* We need a disembark button and the old station shipview back.
* And... Oh... THats about it.
Those last points are just your opinion and your priorities.
Regards,
Qual - In eve since may 2003.
I'm actually starting to think that this was "leaked" on purpose. So once the dust settles and they add non-vanity items (if they do, if they don't then this is a bit of a moot point on my part) they can say "well you knew about the Fearless .pdf, this shouldn't come as a surprise." This would be like politicians "floating a trial balloon" about something they are planning on bringing up in congress/senate. They get the idea out there to guage the reaction and/or so it doesn't come as a shock later when it is brought up.
yea, protest in swg, daoc, and the list goes on works out so well. In each of those games who plays it now? yup, eh I was never a big fan of the pay to level while idle concept so it's no loss to me. But the leaked info, the blatant prices, you think they won't sell items to enhance game play after loosing a good amount of subs or not? Who are you kidding? Yourself sure, but no one else.
The "you" means the general populace of the game, those that have shown with their wallet are the only ones with a voice. The rest, well.. your shooting out hot colored rainbows out the rear and no one will listen. It was stated in memos that have now been verified. So alas, only the ignorant at this point will follow blindly to the end of eve as it is known.
Other games are going this rout as stated before by a very well known poster here in mmorpg.com, but at least in those instances they know better to release items that can be bought or earned in game. I speak of STO atm and it's working out very well for them. CCP's arrogance is no surprise to me, I have no idea why other then maybe the devs arguing many of my post in the past about the way they have people level in that game vs money spent. In those instances I represented the fact that one could basically pay 6 months worth of subs , then just give them the allotted skill points to actually be able to participate in the base game. They didn't like that comment to much, but it is the way the game works.
In the end, they shot their own foot and good mmo players are always needed in other games , currently playing STO and the new gods & heroes rome rising, which for some hate it and other love it, I love it, I think it's like eq 1 in the day. Needs polish, the lag in combat can be frustrating, but I played a straight 10 hours today, haven't done that in an MMO in a long long time, well basically sense EQ1.
Anyways, welcome all that have moved on, to others I do wish you the best, it might not seem that way but I don't want your game to fail, fact is you WILL be back here in the future complaining about boosted items in game. They all do it, STO said they wouldn't but they did, except there you can buy things or earn them so there really isn't room to complain. Eve has this, but extreme levels of cost, STO is just do a few missions repeat and rinse and it's yours, I would guess if a starship cost 60 bucks some might go wtf? but then, they could still earn it in the end.
Oh well, GL you guys, for the others, try out STO or G&H, there are a ton more out there, but eh, been there done that, waiting on the new starwars and of course the big one... guildwars 2.

You would be suprised how many devs actually come here. In ccp case they did alot in the past, but it is obvious now they have no intention in listening so you are right in that regard.

Not so hard seeing this comming whole gaming scene is changing rapitly over last few years and its even changing faster this year. I doub pure hardcore oldskool mmo's will be running next year there all gone. Well i for one dont play anymore im fed up with greedy companys and console love many devolepers have these days.
Money thats what counts not gamers(all tho many gamers are also part of this evil problem), welcome to capitalism hehe.
I'm an EVE quitter before I ever started playing the game.
I purchased the game last year on Steam for $2.00. I've been holdong onto it for a whole year while waiting for Incarna to come out. I was planning on finally activating my account at the end of this year or the beginning of next yearwhen Incarna was more fully rolled out (I figure that I could sign up for a trial account to experience CQ fully.) Now, I refuse to ever activate my account and ever pay CCP the $15 of a monthly fee.)
When I am unhappy with a developers business model and I feel it to be in bad faith with the player base, nickel and diming, going overboard with charging too much for a tiny vanity item (A MONOCLE FOR THE PRICE OF AN EXPANSION PACK???? ARE YOU F****** SERIOUS?????), expecting too much with too many items going into the cash shop while still charging a monthly fee (why I loathe Cryptic and Star Trek Online. Ironic that CCP's cash shop is WORSE than Star Trek Online's,) and going overboard on the microtransactions (why I quit City of Heroes despite it being my favourite MMO: That's it, I quit City of Heroes, I've cancelled my subscription)
I won't contribute to such companies or let them have ny dollars, so CCP is now on my Not Gonna Bother to Support list.
I just wish more people would agree with me so we could make a positive change in the MMO industry.

"The monster created isn't by the company that makes the game, it's by the fans that make it something it never was"
You would be suprised how many devs actually come here.

Should they sit with all the Star Wars Galaxies players?
(Hah, I was going to say "all the Pre-CU Star Wars Galaxies vets," then I remembered recent history.)
