personally, a petition won't work. this isn't about subscriber counts or dedicated following. SOE is losing its IP license at the end of this year. LA will not renew they are throwing 100% market force behind TOR. This means SOE has to shutdown SWG no matter what. LA will not want ot have 2 Star Wars MMO's they want everyone to play one. I would love to see SWG stick around personally i don't think it will compete directly with TOR but LA believes it can damage the success of TOR and for that reason alone SWG is dead.
In what universe would SWG ever be considered competition for biowares SWTOR?
I'm sure that is SWG was profitable to run then SOE would be running it and Lucas Arts would be smiling all the way to the bank. Any developer would love to have more marketshare with two games than less with only one. The problem is that SWG is a flop and has been for six years.
SWTOR was going to put an end to SWG anyway and both companies knew it. Now at least Lucas Arts the license for the original trilogy is freed up instead of wasting away on SWG. Maybe someone can give it another chance. Even bioware.
i though i would be happy to finaly hear this game is going to die, but i had the best time, and i will miss it, in the back of my head i always though when this new star wars mmo would be out they would take SWG back to it's intended time line with little to no jedi and it would be great but now it's really going... i will still miss it, RIP SWG
and i still hate $oE and will do my best to never NEVER BUY ANY SONY PRODUCT EVER !!!
I enjoyed pre-CU and even the CU. NGE removed a little bit to much of the freedom I enjoyed about SWG. Will be sad to see a once honored game die a horribly shameful death, but hey I guess it was just time.

Remember these are the people that brought us the NGE. It's not like they understand anything, at all, whatsoever about the mmo market. They just see 'if we have people playing x mmo they won't be playing y mmo'. LA = not smartest people ever.
I think SOE wants out of the IP. This will allow them to create their own game and not worry about restrictions from LA. 5 years ago, every game developer was seeking established IP's. These days, established IP's are just bad because of so many brand restrictions and legal red tape. I think SOE would gladly go back in time and eliminate SWG, DCUO and MXO from their portfolio.
I think it's really cute, all the negative things people are saying about me, and this petition, simply because I posted a link. It's really depressing to see what has been done to you people because of a game. What I really like is the people calling me an NGE fanboi and how I'm crying. So let's get one thing straight. I started the game when they plugged that thing in. So all the Pre CU bugginess, credit duping, forum troll wars, and everything else that was going on back there, I've been through it. I've been through it now and have taken every single twist and turn the game has taken the last eight years.
I, like the vast majority of you, was not pleased about the NGE and the changes made to the game. I was not happy with having to combine into one of nine "iconic" professions. I wasn't happy with the reduced complexity of the game. And while the game was a shadow of it's former self, it still clearly had that sandbox factor that people enjoyed, albeit in reduced form. Why did I stay? I'll tell you why I stayed. Not out of some loyalty to SOE, cause believe me I've criticized them plenty. It was because I am that much of a Star Wars fan, and my friends that chose to play into the NGE.
Do I miss the old days of SWG? I certainly do. Not a day goes by I miss my smuggler/rifleman. But being bitter about the game, and especially being bitter to those that have kept playing it has not, and will not continue to get you no where. Sitting here and running down people that want to sign that petition really just goes to show what kind of human beings you really are. But, it takes all kinds to make the world go around I guess. As much as people have complained over the years about bringing back Pre NGE and Pre CU, it didn't get you what you wanted. Now you turn that vitriol on those that don't want the game to close?
We get it. You hate the NGE. And that's fine, I can respect that. As I said before, I myself didn't care for it too much either. But I was able to get past that cause I wanted to play in a Star Wars universe and I was willing to sacrifice I guess. Doesn't make me a bad person, and doesn't make anyone else a bad person either. So those of you running off at the keyboard about how people who want to save this game are trash and such, and take pleasure in the fact that people are actually sad about the end of this game, I really feel for you, and feel for your lack of emotion, and your lack of conscience. Am I crying over this? Hardly. I am sad that a game I've spent most of the last eight years in is coming to an end. And there is nothing wrong with being sad. Cause that's simply being human. Which judging by some of your responses in this thread, is a lot more than many of you could ever hope to be.
As you say yourself, you did your choice and did not support the people wanting their game back then in 2005, and you don't consider yourself as a bad person.
But you say it's depressing "what has been done to us because of a game", when vets don't support your petition now.
Only difference, THIS time YOU are the one getting the short stick.
Get over it.
Funny how you picked out only what suited your point of view. As you can note above, I did say I did not care for the NGE myself. But I'm that much of a Star Wars fan. In regards to my comment about "what's been done to (you) because of a game", has nothing to do with whether you sign the petition or not. But rather the vile meanness and contempt you show towards other people. Thank you for proving my point.
Remember these are the people that brought us the NGE. It's not like they understand anything, at all, whatsoever about the mmo market. They just see 'if we have people playing x mmo they won't be playing y mmo'. LA = not smartest people ever.
The logic is that Lucas Arts is afraid that people paying a monthly fee to play SWG might not become monthly paying customers if both games exist?
I don't think the success of SWTOR hinges on gaining the 5,000 or so SWG players in order to survive.
The simplest answer is that SWG was a dead product that wasn't generating much revenue at all. On top of that the reputation of the game has been nothing but negative for both companies involved. SWTOR would have most likely been the final nail in the coffin for SWG.
I see no reason why SOE would even consider paying to renew the license fee for the game.
I don't think it mattered at all what SOE wanted. LucusArts was not going to renew the license. SWG was a dispointment for them. They're moving on to SWTOR.

I believe you might be right. But as good as everyone says TOR is going to be, there is always going to be a market for an MMO that takes place in the classic trilogy era. Just my thoughts.
Classic Movies or not, I don't want to be typecasted into some linear lemming-line... especially in the world of star wars. Man... so sick of being told what to do and where to go in these MMOs.
The Star Wars MMO died with the NGE. However, shutting down the servers was the end to wishful thinking - as if they were ever going to release the classic version of SWG.
I quit the game back in 2006, yes was still a tad upset to learn of SWG's shut down.
And to re-live the fantasy via SWTOR? As cool as that game will be, it will not be able to provide years of entertainment for a single person. There is no retain within their linear progression.... no extra sandbox elements. It's k12 entertainment at best....especially with those stupid battlegrounds.

Sorry just to be nitpicky.... If the ball hit the foul pole it is a home run..... the foul pole is in fair ground. So SWG must be a homerun for you
I'm impressed you even read it. Thanks for the clarification, I was not aware of that.

I think a hockey analogy works a little better here.
Overtime game, sudden death, winner take all. Slap-shot bomb from the blue line... beats the goalie glove side... CLANG. hits the post. The other team (TEAM FAILURE, LOLOLOLOL) skates down and scores, game over... Sad faces everywhere .
Why do people think that SWG was going to be competition for SWTOR? Does anyone really think that Lucas Art or Bioware were living in fear of competing with SWG? As if it was somehow going to threaten the success of the old republic or steal players away?
Lucas Arts most certainly did not close this game down and least of all they wouldn't do it for fear of SWG being a competitor. It is doubtful that SWG had more than 5,000 or so subscribers.
An online petition is going to fall on deaf ears. SWG requires a license and that license costs money. SWG has been dieing for far more years than it was succeeding. I doubt SOE could afford to keep running the game, afford to invest in redesigning the game for a fourth time to have a F2P model or even understands how to successfully run a F2P game.
SOE and Lucas Arts only listen to one thing and that is money. If you really want to be heard then perhaps find a way that speaks the language they can understand.
Your post is spot on and it's always about the money when it comes to any business. If I was Smedley (and I'm glad I'm not lol) I wouldn't authorize another contract with Lucas and pay for a license to continue a dying game. It's not good business sense.
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
Just to finish off any hope that a petition would be of any use, please read the following:
Regarding the Star Wars Galaxies petitions, we first want to thank everyone for taking the time to organize such an effort. As always, we appreciate your feedback, and I can assure you with 100% confidence that your feelings have been heard.
No one is more disappointed than we are to cancel Star Wars Galaxies; however, we are confident that this was the only decision possible. This was not an easy decision to make; Sony Online Entertainment and Lucas Arts spent months deliberating, and in the end we had to make the hard choice. We are extremely proud of the ground we broke with the launch of SWG, its growth and evolution since launch, and most especially, the community.
We would ask you take this opportunity to enjoy SWG as long as possible and participate in the game ending event this December. Thank you again for your dedication to Star Wars Galaxies and we hope your final memories are enjoyable.

That is what I bet SOE were hoping people will think and to stop it, but SWG players are pushing it even more after that!

Now they are looking into legal manouevres
Well they have to sue Lucas Arts and good luck with that, hes the 900 pound gorrila in the room and it is not going to happen. It is his license to do with as he pleases. Now with the other game comming online in the next few month it was best to put swg down with the kill shot. It dead jim and needs to be.

I'm not sure there's anything you can do "legally" lol. APB shut down, Tabula Rasa, MxO, Chronicles of Spellborn, etc...seriously, what possible "legal manuvers" could you possibly be holding out hope for?
lets say they get 5 times as many people to sign it more than they have subsriptions. What does that tell them?... Nothing!
The only way it would ever stand a chance of continuing to operate, would be for a massive influx of new subscriptions, that make them see the ability to make future profits.

I'd sign a petition to ensure it does shut down.! because of how SOE treated its players & fan base, SWG should have been removed from them years ago.
But I hasten to add that there is nothing else out there that even resembles the possibilities this game had and has.
The sand box eviroment was a breath of fresh air. Why have no other developers spent as much time on the housing and crafting side?

More power to the SWG fans, but its not going to happen. But I always support such causes. Power to the (MMO) people!

But it will do no good.
I loved SWG but it is over. You can't stop it.

it's dead, kill it, put it out of is mizzoreeee!
PRE-NGE FTW!
I am afraid that this game is beyond saving now and that a Kevorkian is the only humane thing to do.
It had potential 8 years ago but it is really old and tired now.

Im a precu swg vet, but I remember what it was like to lose a game I loved, so I signed for all those still playing who love the game as it is.
I signed lots of petitions when they foisted they NGE on us, but they did nothing. Maybe this will help but I doubt it. Cheers!
LOL...petition..LOL
