The whole concept of "resentment toward TOR" is utterly ludicrous. SWG was dead even with the free 45 days for all, and when those run out, the populations on all but about three servers are going to be infinitesimal. You can say all you want about how population levels are healthy and the game is viable and sustainable, but it's really not.
Populations were good, as there was 4 Heavy servers, and 3 were locked to transfers in, with the rest medium sized, and low populated for the quiet crowd. John Smedley stated the reason for closure was not due to population, but a contractual issue.
You are just saying it was dead / populations were not healthy because you want it to be that, to satisfy your own resentment to SWG, and eagerness for it to fail
It only looked worse due to the large number of servers it still had. Not many MMOs have as many servers, except WOW
It reached #5 in the Top MMOs of 2010 (link is in a previous post), and would not have been on the list if it was dead
The resentment towards TOR is that LA said that both games would co-exist together, and now they change their minds, and SWG closes around the date SWTOR gets released. It is obvious they are pulling SWG from the market due to TOR, not because of anything else
Populations have dropped now, because people have no will to play the game since the announcement. If the announcement came necxt month or the month after then it might have been down to population if people did not stick around after the 45 days, but the servers jsut before it had never been fuller. Before the 2 week breach and the FCTS only 1 server was full heavy, then in May-June we had 4 servers heavy. SOE/LA would not know if people would stick around or not, they don't have crystal balls, they would have waited.
SOE don't usually give long notices for things, 2 weeks for NGE, 2 months for the closure of the Matrix, but 6 months of SWG? Something special between LA and SOE went down here. They could have easily have waited 2 months to see, and then gave 4 months, which is still plenty notice.
I enjoyed pre-CU and even the CU. NGE removed a little bit to much of the freedom I enjoyed about SWG. Will be sad to see a once honored game die a horribly shameful death, but hey I guess it was just time.
In all honesty after all the controversy I think the game had a good run, it outlasted a lot of other MMOs so it must have remained profitable enough to keep open. If there is shame to be had it all goes to Lucas Arts for not renewing the license because they want ToR to be "the" Star Wars MMO.
And that's what it really means to be a Star Wars fan, simply a cash generator for George Lucas.

Do you really believe that the population has dropped again because of the announcement or more because the 45 free days are over? I mean neither of us have any kind of proof as to why people left. All I can say is that it was pretty dead on all the servers with the exception of SS before the free 45 days.
I think for once SOE did the right thing. They announced its closure 6 months in advance. If they had not how many people would have continued to piss away money on the TCG. If they had given a short notice people would have freaked out..they give a long notice and people like you freak out. Just cant please everyone.
In the end none of it really matters. The petition, the butt hurt attitude, the crying girl on you tube..it just does not make a difference. The bottom line really is that you are all sad and emotional that a video game is closing down. You have become so emotionally invested in this game no one is going to be able to reason with you. It is just not possible to debate logic vs emotion.
Seriously after SWG shuts down maybe it is better if you don't play TOR or any other MMO. They all meet the same fate in the end.

The populations were NOT good. They haven't been good in years. This is incontrovertible fact.
So I started to walk into the water. I won't lie to you boys...I was terrified. But I pressed on, and as I made my way past the breakers, a strange calm came over me. I don't know if it was divine intervention or the kinship of all living things, but I tell you, Jerry, at that moment ... I was a marine biologist.

I remember back right after the CU they changed the server list to show more people on than the day before.. IE what was once considered a light load was now a heavy load. there were not as many people online, but the server list said ther was. without hard numbers from SOE, population indications iare smoke and mirrors always to paint a brighter picture. even in todays state of the game there are fewer players than there was the day before the NGE
No offense, but a petition won't save this game. Only money will at this point. If an obscene number of people bought the game then they might consider extending it.
how about a petition to get john smedly to resign? Or how about a petition for the investigation in the continued selling of trading card games knowing the game is bieng shut down? or better yet a petition to blacklist julio torres from future game development. Those petition id sign. A classic server would be nice but they wont do it the tools lol

Here is What John Smedley said about the population of the game. Notice he never answered the question, never said it wasn't closing due to population and never said the population was healthy
What about the player population? Some readers will choose to believe that the game is being canceled because it's "dying."
Populations have stayed pretty steady for a long time now. In fact, we recently merged a bunch of servers to help the prime-time population. But gosh, the game's been running for a long time now, and it's been a great run. We're glad to have done it. There are going to be a lot of fans that are going to say, hey can't you give us the source code, or can't we run a server, and the answer is going to be, I'm sorry -- we have to decline that. It's just not possible. It seems obvious to everyone but a very small few people that the reason SWG is closing down is because it doesn't have enough players and doesn't justify the expenses to run it. That is why Smedley said they were in discussions with Lucas Arts for some time about when the best time to close the game would be. -John Smedley.
It seems obvious to everyone but a few small group of people that the low population in the game was the cause of SWG being closed down. I really doubt that Lucas Arts is worried about a few hundred SWG players moving over to SWTOR and they closed down SWG to force them to do something.
That is a huge conclusion to jump to that pretty much demands the obvious population problems be overlooked.

After the 2 week breach and the FCTS and the 45 free days, the servers went from 1 heavy server to9 4 heavy servers. The popullations were on the UP.
It makes no sense to close down the game when it was doing this good, but if populations started to drop right down again after the 45 days ended about now, then they would have reassessed the situation over the next few months (as they have said countless times they do not have a crystal ball LOL!), and then closed the game down in Dec 15th still. 3-5 months is still plenty time, Matrix had 2 months.
If it was down to populations, then it seems stupid closing the game down now with 6 months notice before the free 45 days vacated as they may not have vacacted. What makes sense is to wait 1-3 months from now, see what people do, then announce shutdown in 3-5 months on Dec 15th
With this huge notice, most people are not bothering renewing until Sep 15th now. If there was not much of a population then there would be no worry of a shorter notice. Even I think the notice for closure is way too long. This conversation is going to last for 6+ more months, instead of about 2 or 3
I am 10000000000% positive that the reeason for the closure was NOT population

Again you are overlooking the obvious for whatever reasons.
The four heavy load servers will filled with people paying exactly zero dollars. Not a single player on those servers has been paying a subscription fee since SOE went back online. SOE/Lucas Arts have the numbers of how many people have only come back, because the game is free right now. They have the historical trends to show how many people stay around after given free time, because they have done it countless times.
You are acting like SWG was somehow given a second chance at life and this situation it is in is something it has never experienced before. Sorry to say that it has. Populations jump up when SOE gives out free reactivations, but it always goes back to normal.
There is zero reason to expect that this time would be any different. If SWG was strong enough to retain players it would have been doing so alread. There hasn't been some miracle patch or massive content update to attract and retain players.
The bottom line is this. This isn't the first time SOE has tried to save this game. They are well aware of what is required to make this game functional and generate enough revenue to justify the licensing fee and SWG just doesn't have it. That is why SOE and Lucas Arts have been talking about closing the game for some time now (their words, not mine).
You have to give up on this notion that SWG could somehow suddenly become healthy and profitable. SOE and Lucas Arts have done everything possible over the last eight years. SWG just isn't a very good product and in no way justifies reinvesting in its development or massively discounting the license.
The reason the game was shut down was most certainly population. That is why Smed didn't answer the question when it was asked.

Again there would have been no harm in SOE waiting to see if the numbers did in fact drop after the 45 days. If they announced the closure at the end of Sep for closure in Dec 15th, I would not feel more shafted, as 2 months notice came with the Matrix, so that timeframe would have been expected.
Now that the game has been announced to close, people are struggling to find reason to log in. Hence the reason why they do not announce it much sooner.
SOE are now losing more money by giving this much notice
People may not be paying, but no one knows they would not until the time had elapsed. I did not put payment details back into my accounts until I could no longer log in. I still want to play so resubbed.
No company, especially SOE, are generous enough to let people know about a game closure for this much timeframe, they would still keep taking peoples money, as people think game is ongoing, and have the right to. SOE are now going to lose out on about 2 months worth of subs.
The fact they did it now, when SWG was on a high, means that it was NOT population.
You have to give up on the fact the game was dead - It was better than Aion, Warhammer, City of Heroes, Star Trek Onlin and loads of other MMOS, except 4 of them

Your entire argument is based on two very large assumptions that almost no one agrees with.
That SWG in its current form was able to generate enough money to justify the cost of operation and renewing the license and that after 8 years it could somehow still be "saved".
That the game was somehow "healthy", because a bunch of freeloaders were touring the game with 45 free days and that somehow this time the free players might possibly decide to subscribe.
You completely overlook the fact that SOE/LA have been trying to save this game for 8 years now and nothing has worked. Simply put SOE/LA have already tried everything you think is now possible. This isn't the first time SWG has been in this situation. Be glad it lasted this long and that both companies put this much effort into this crippled game.
Just accept that both companies have already tried to save the game and run it long past the point most other companies would have closed it down. It doesn't need another year to "see what happens", because this situation isn't new. SOE/LA have seen it all before and they know the final outcome. The free time would end and people would leave again, just like they have in the past.
Six months notice was a gift. Consider that your extra time instead of them just closing the doors in two months. Enjoy.

I am not basing my arguments on those 2 assumptions at all
It is just stupid to begin to close game now on account of populations, for 6 months notice, when 2-3 months would have been ample
If it was down to populations, and were doing it now regardless of the 45 days "populatuion boom", then it would be closing in Sept instead.
The 6 months notice is more of a curse than a gift,. There are hardly anybody in game and as far as SOE goes, they are losing money from people seeing no point in paying. Not usually SWGs style. Even when they closed the servers back on Oct 15th they only gave one months notice, when was expecting about 3.
Even I, with this notice I may not sub all the usual accounts now as I would have done, Ill just sub my main few, and save the money for the last hoorah on Sept 15th where I can get as many as I can on.
No matter which way you try to spin it, you are wrong

Maybe they decided to do something right for a change and give people a heads up instead of milking and scamming them for extra money. Given the reputation, I would have expected them to give a 1 week notice and just spring the close out event and anouncement at the same time and say thanks for the cash .....

I think your missing one important factor. The 3 - 6 and one year subs. Buy giving a 6 month our anybody who might have considered buying a 6 month or a one month sub has ample warning, and buy giving such a long period, nobody can sue them like they did back when mustafar came out only to be hit by the NGE.
They are just trying not to get into another law suit going you did not warn us. Everybody been warned and warned good that this is coming, so nobody can sue them over that.

Just give it up. SWG is closing because of TOR, and they just want one SW MMO on the market, and SOE has been bought off by LA/EA so they can now afford the loss of peoples subscriptions and to top it off they reduce the monthly fee? I have been charged £8.99 now, not £9.49
How can they afford that when 1) People are now not subbing to SOE and 2) Had a major financial loss with the security breach.
The question that needs to be answered by the people that are about to go and walk in front of a bus over this is, Does SWG and the small amount of people playing it, do the IP justice anymore? My personal answer would be, It never did at any point in it's whole lifespan. I have a real good feeling LA's didn't think so as well.
My question is where is Badger in all this, hes the guy who like to post all the charts showing populations and stuff, and sits in on the council and what not.
I have yet to see him post anything since this announcement. I have to wonder what happened to Mr die hard badger.
I still say it is all about money, or the lack of money.

Currently playing:
EVE online (Ruining low sec one hotdrop at a time)
Gravity Rush,
Dishonoured: The Knife of Dunwall.
(Waiting for) Metro: Last Light,
Company of Heroes II.
Sorry.
Well Update the Graphics Engine, and Roll it Back to Pre-NGE and I'll Sign.
Where's the petition to shut it down now? I'd sign that ...
Uneeded. Dec 15th you will feel a disturbance in the force, "as if dozens* of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced."
* intentional misquote
I recall signing the petition to undo NGE in 2005, there was tens of thousands people signed, and what good did it make?
I do not know of any online petition that made any impact on intended target.
NEW IDEAS that can refresh the STALE state of MMORPGs
SWG has been a freaking joke ever since Nov 5, 2005
how about a petition to get john smedly to resign?

Servers went dead as soon as the announcement was made, 45 days was over only since yesterday. People still had a week
Star Trek Online - Best Free MMORPG of 2012
Again you are overlooking the obvious for whatever reasons.

50p per account is not enough to encorage the majority of people to sub if they don't feel like it
