Ok, so I was bored one day and clicked on the free 7 day trial, knowing the reviews saying its a wow clone. I was amazed at this game, after day four into the trial I bought the game. Heres why.
This game does have a uncanny wow effect to the UI, but its far from a wow clone once you start to get into the stories and the gameplay. This game is what wow should have evolved to and even further, it targets a much more mature mindset type of crowd of people. There is a ton of people in this game right now, no shortage of players running around the zones. It has alot of mini raiding going on, and the loot system is unbeleivably rewarding and player friendly. Everyone comes up to a rift and the raid starts right there in the zone, it grows right there on the ground and out of the sky. You can instantly join the "public group" which turns into a raid of all players in the area around the rift.
your a hybrid kind of character also, almost like having three jobs active at same time like ffxi's jobs and subjobs, but also like WoW's paladin class, except that its customizable with around 7 differant classes per type of role. Its got quite a few elements in it like EQ2, such as shinies, ect.
In closing all I got to say from someone whos played every mmo out there, dont write this thing off because of the wow element to it, its amazingly deeper then WoW could ever be. Once you try it, and get out to the open zone, youll be glad you tried it. Again, it runs on all my computers including laptop, and they even made it so it will look good on every one of them
Not to mention the game runs super smoothly and almost no bugs what so ever in this thing, I'm truely amazed and happy I tried it.

Personally having beta tested this game to death and watched my brother play it all the time and listen to him complaining all the time that it's very boring. Wait until you have played it for three months then come back and do a write up. You have not had a chance to do 95% of the game and you are marking it up as a 5 star game and you are telling people not to listen to the players or testers who have given this game a lot of hours play time, I personally think you are very bias indeed.
It's cool that you are enjoying the game but please do not speak on behalf of the folks who have clearly put in the time and decided it's a poor game, you have no right at all to speak for these people who have put in the man hours which you HAVE NOT!!
As far as I am concerned you are telling people to waste their money, however that's what the trail is for and any game is going to be fun until you have got past level 20 or so. I stand by what I have always said about this game since leaving it...This game sucks and I will not invest any of my hard earnt cash on it period.
Asbo
Because the trial isnt free ?
Get off your high horse, all the OP is saying is don't write this game off just because others don't like it, hell I tried the trial and the game is not half as bad as some of the chicken littles say it is, and if more people would form their own oppinion on things instead of listening to every Tom, Dick and Harry's oppinion, they might find they like things that others don't. So I say the same thing as the OP, IGNORE the reviews, make up your own mind about things, you might be suprised.
"its amazingly deeper then WoW could ever be"
How do you justify this claim ?
Caveat Emptor
I wouldn't tell people to ignore review's on Rift as they are mostly very good (7.5-9's pretty much.)
Currently Playing:
Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta
Was fun for the first few weeks i really thought I found my themepark game, but then after a while when the Rift "dynamic" feature novelty wore and and the pointless PVP and the easymode dungeon and the epic grind for pixel epics boredom kicked in, i unsubbed.
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.
I was in the same boat I actually did the beta and sorta liked it. Well I decided to buy it someone had it on sale cheap I played it and was still playing WoW (raiding on the weekends). I had alof fun in it got my rogue and cleric both to 50 within 3 weeks together I guess. I did some raid rifts and some tier 1 and tier 2 dungeons. I like the game the leveling to me is the best part of Rift it can be fun but the end game was a little to bland right now for me. The new LFG tool helps find dungeons faster but it can still take awhile like during the day on my server I could get on and spend 1+ hours in que or more before getitng bored. But all in all I agree with the OP it is a fun game the soul system with your 8 souls 9 including your PVP one is nice to mess with and see what u like to play but as u get more towards end game theres only certain ones that are raid viable in each one. It got me away from WoW for awhile and I had alot of fun even got some of my friends playing it.
Arena is a joke an e-Sport, even MLG has been wanting to drop it because of obvious RNG problems with it. Arena has never been balanced, and from an RPG standpoint it has been pretty horrible. I've been playing WoW since 1.2 and quit just over a month ago, and how can you say the questing is any different? OK, it has a larger world with multiple starting zones and you can have different paths to quest.. it's still the same thing. I've done every zone in old Azeroth and new Azeroth.
Old Azeroth had more of an immersive feel to it, simply because it wasn't fluid. Now, Rift quests do flow pretty good, and that's true, but it's not the only way to level. You can rift, dungeon, quest or warfront to level. You can just run around and do whatever you feel like and you'll be getting experience.
I really don't know how you think AV is better than Port Scion, when AV has been god awful since 2.3 and was awful once it became a race to kill the general. AV was at it's best and was probably the best instanced battleground when it was launched and it was a claw through the zone to the general. How can you compare Black Garden to Arathi Basin? There is no battleground like Black Garden in World of Warcraft, get over yourself. WSG and Whitefall are essentially the same thing, except you can return the flag instantly (in WSG), so Whitefall Steppes actually has a better element to it (at least to me).
Codex vs Arathi Basin - they are a bit different and I'd have to say they are on equal footing. Codex has 4 points with one thats worth more, and Arathi Basin has 5 points with one thats more strategic. You can say Rift copied them from WoW, but that's exactly what they said they were going to do. The only thing they said that was really inovative was the class-system, if you expected something else, you didn't research this game.
Rift is amazing, they took parts of other MMOs that were awesome and put them in. If you get bored, it's because you would've been bored regardless. I am tired of hearing people say "well, Rift gets boring", well guess what? So does WoW! Personally, I haven't been bored once in Rift and I plan to be playing this for months to come.
Last I checked, WoW was no longer being considered an "e-sport" and Blizzard has flat out stated that they aren't focusing on Arenas anymore as a means of balancing.
Regarding PvP, they're balancing around Rated BGs now. That's what they say, anyways.
.. But in a good way.
I would have to say the reason I didn't enjoy the game much was not because it was too much like WoW, but like almost every MMO out. I think most of us are sick of playing the same game in a different skin. The gameplay and graphics also felt a lot more like WAR than WoW to me.
I don't think it's a bad game, but it's too similar to everything else. If you don't mind that, then it should be good.
It uses an upgraded engine from the one used in Warhammer. The graphics do look very similar, that my first thought during beta and even if you look at the character tab, looks nearly the same when viewing your character model. If you're sick of the same, I would advise not getting into mainstream MMOs any time soon. All MMOs on the horizon are based on the same ideas that Rift was.
While, I agree that a lot of things in Rift I don't like, such as the bland crafting and that you can get 50 in the first month you play, it's a game where I met great people to play with and that's all that really matters. I'm hoping niche MMOs can start coming out more often and with a little more success. That'd be great.
and after one month you will quit....
Woah woah, easy there. Did you read my entire post or are you just ready to jump on anyone who does not think good about Rift? It was nothing more than a little teasing, really. Didnt I make myself clear at the end of my post? Can't you guys take a little joke sometimes? My interest for both WoW and Rift have long gone so I'm in no mood to argue about their good and bad. Just chill, mm 'kay?
I'm long in the tooth when it comes to gaming like the OP. I've played Wow, and I enjoyed it to a point; the endgame. If you're not a PvPer, the endgame in Wow (even with the new patch coming) is strictly raid or die.
While I've heard good things about Rift, I've also heard that it's endgame was the same philosophy; if you don't raid, you'll never get better than second class gear. Is this accurate?
And please, no arguments about what raiding deserves, or that I should give Rift raiding a try, etc. I've raided plenty. It's dull, it's old, and it needs to stop being the only way to allow gear progression at endgame.
In any case, I'm just asking about Rift's endgame: if I can get best gear through crafting or some challenging solo content, I'm there. If endgame is raid or pvp or forget it, I'll just forget it now and save myself the aggravation of the bait and switch.
the 7 day Trial is AWSOME, commit to playing it for more then a month and you will find the game to Be shallow and it will leave you wanting, 3 months later i have had enough, 3 months into the game the Population is a 3rd of what it was with a slight increase after Larg Patches new content explored and 2 weaks later populations are low again, in my 3rd guild wittled down each time by attrition and merging into another small guild in hopes to get 2-3 core groups for raiding, 290 dungeon runs in the same 5 dungeons to get the Gear and points for raiding only to not have enough people to raid with, maxed out crafting maxed after 6 weaks with a few recipies still out there i dont have (probably drops in the raids),
Best of luck to ya, im off to find another game inbetweeen fishing.
Still looking for a game that has a sense of adventure.
I'm glad you like it, but it's just shy of delusional to say this game is nothing like WoW.
I think their design philosophies are probably from the same scripture.
I have to agree with this poster, the two games have very strong links. RIFT just has rifts and interchangeable classes in addition, plus a little bit of other fluff.
I'm not upset about anything. You said WoW battlegrounds were better, that Arena was good and that WoW leveling was better. I simply responded.
The fact is many of the developers said they got their ideas from Vanilla WoW. They wanted to re-create that sort of game. It wasn't about creating a new and innovative title that would change the MMO landscape. They never wanted to do that, it was about making a polished, fun game that could perhaps revive what WoW once was.
And another person extolling this little gem of so called truth the dev's never meant to.......
Exhibit A.

So you are saying this quote "Rift is the complete next gen in online gaming" means "It wasn't about creating a new and innovative title that would change the MMO landscape " really?
Cal.
This doom and gloom thread was brought to you by Chin Up the new ultra high caffeine soft drink for gamers who just need that boost of happiness after a long forum session.
Next Gen. is a term flaunted around by nearly every game as marketing and don't play some game like that. If you are seriously researching a game, you're not going to buy into trailers and marketing ploys that every game does. I mean actually look into the game and read things about it.
All of the main developers said they came from Vanilla WoW, that's what got them into MMOs, what do you honestly expect them to do when they mention that? I expected exactly what I got when I bought Rift. They only really talked about the class-system, because everything else didn't need to be talked about, anyone who was expecting something different is daydreaming.
And on the video, it isn't very clear what they mean by "next generation" or "advance MMOs", but I don't think it's in innovative features, but releasing with quality, polish and content on day 1.
this is pretty spot on. Even more so if you play PvP. This game was fun for a few weeks, but it got old fast and when your server turns into a ghost town...its time to quit.
/agree, same experience for me.
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D
That's pretty much the knock on RIFT, it's great fun early levels but after you're done leveling, it's pretty repetitive with the reputation grind ala WoW. You have to grind for so many different vendors it's not funny, and the items really aren't worth much as far as helping your toon. The only difference is that in RIFT, you reach it a lot faster than most other MMOs because they give you EXP crutches throughout the game.
Most of the 50s don't log in as much anymore to play, at least in my guild. They log on for raiding and maybe some dailies but they've already done everything in the game since launch for the most part worth doing.
It's not a common thing discussed in-game (In game usually is quiet) but it talked about in guilds a lot. A feeling of deja vu hits you after you get maxed and begin to do those dailies.
I know plenty of people thinking they will unsub within the next week or so, and come back for Hammerknell or after they release that so they can let them fix any bugs and lag issues that most certainly will come with Hammerknell like this last patch had.
"TO MICHAEL!"
