I'm glad you like it, but it's just shy of delusional to say this game is nothing like WoW.
I think their design philosophies are probably from the same scripture.
I have to agree with this poster, the two games have very strong links. RIFT just has rifts and interchangeable classes in addition, plus a little bit of other fluff.
The fact is many of the developers said they got their ideas from Vanilla WoW. They wanted to re-create that sort of game. It wasn't about creating a new and innovative title that would change the MMO landscape. They never wanted to do that, it was about making a polished, fun game that could perhaps revive what WoW once was.
And another person extolling this little gem of so called truth the dev's never meant to.......
So you are saying this quote "Rift is the complete next gen in online gaming" means "It wasn't about creating a new and innovative title that would change the MMO landscape" really?
Cal.
Technically speaking Rift is next gen.. It has several different servers running several different things at once.. That's why during invasions you can have 100's of players on you're screen and not lag.. It defiantly has next gen phasing and other technical goodies.. Maybe the gameplay isn't next gen, but Trion never claimed it's gameplay would be.

Personally having beta tested this game to death and watched my brother play it all the time and listen to him complaining all the time that it's very boring. Wait until you have played it for three months then come back and do a write up. You have not had a chance to do 95% of the game and you are marking it up as a 5 star game and you are telling people not to listen to the players or testers who have given this game a lot of hours play time, I personally think you are very bias indeed.
It's cool that you are enjoying the game but please do not speak on behalf of the folks who have clearly put in the time and decided it's a poor game, you have no right at all to speak for these people who have put in the man hours which you HAVE NOT!!
As far as I am concerned you are telling people to waste their money, however that's what the trail is for and any game is going to be fun until you have got past level 20 or so. I stand by what I have always said about this game since leaving it...This game sucks and I will not invest any of my hard earnt cash on it period.
Well i've played 95% of it and for a couple of months and I agree with the OP. You accuse him of telling people to waste their money, but you are telling people not to play a pretty decent game. People can take their choice and I don't think they shouldn't listen to you either because after my experience of the game, in my humble opinion, you are wrong.

this is pretty spot on. Even more so if you play PvP. This game was fun for a few weeks, but it got old fast and when your server turns into a ghost town...its time to quit.
If your server turns into a ghost town... free transfer to a full one.
I just played for first time on trial tonight, for a few hours and did the following:
Got to Level 10. Lots of quests. Grouped for some rifts. Joined a raid of 4 groups doing a massive rift.
So early impressions:
The raid made no sense at all, everyone was running to different locations and things would pop up, invasions, rifts, random bosses on their own, etc. I followed them around to each point and healed the few that needed healing. Surprisingly, i was by far the lowest level, with most between 25-30. I assumed i was in the starter area (i believe the town/city whatever is called Meridian - The massive rift was next to here).
Got awarded a corrupted sourcestone, purple item, not sure why again, but i was one of two people to get one. Nobody spoke in chat; seems pickup, kill rift, piss off.
Lot's of randomness in this game, along with repetitiveness, which is concerning so early on.
After one night, already i'm getting the sense of what people have been saying. There's lots of things to do, nice action, but i got the feeling i was doing all this for the sake of it. Like, all the ingredients taken from different games, but with nothing tying them together. I have heard this before - Great mechanics, but as a whole?
We all know what the score is, but for some reason with this game, within a couple of hours i was already running around aimlessly and it felt really soulless. The world is very uninspiring, the rifts are ridiculously frequent and don't have the awe factor i was expecting. Already, i feel no desire to explore as the world is so very bland - Again, there is alot in it, so i don't know why i feel that way. The comparisons with WAR are well founded. I remember the driving goal there was to get into the higher tier of PvP and have the big siege battles - looked great fun and they were.
With this, i am not sure what the end goal would be. What am i defending from the Rifts and why? (in terms of actual reason, not storyline)
There's some psychology happening here where the game feels like a list was written up and it was made as a box ticking exercise. In theory and in my own head, it should be incredible, so why do i feel like it's not. I'll play throughout the trial and give it a solid shot though, as there is seriously nothing else out until early after September.

Like I said, the game was fun for a few weeks, but it got old fast. So even If I could transfer (for free) to a full server (which you cant btw), it would still be boring to me. Also as a PvP player, who wants open world pvp RIFT, offers pretty much nothing. In addition it is clear that with the latest patch RIFT is catering to RAIDERS. Not for me man, sorry.
Just wanted to add, I wish RIFT the best, I hope it kicks blizzs arse. I just found its not my type of MMO.
Now that i think about it, the game would be alot more fun levelling up with a group or something. So far i have seen zero chat and i think all the low level players are alts, as they are all guilded.
I have seen so few low levels in the starting area (they are either level 25 or 50 for some reason), that i think it will be a very isolating game unless i stumble on a nice group by luck.

The first 20 levels or so, were quite fun. Lots of chat, pleyer activity, RIFT groups etc. But I got to a point, somewhere after that, where I would log in and the only time I would hear chat or see another player was when I went back to town or joined a warfront. The world just felt like a single player RPG and thats not why I play an MMO. I think they obviously made way too many servers at launch and just dont offer enough incentive to have players out in the open world (at least on the pvp server I was on).
I would like to hear this as well. Rift is only a quater the game WoW is. So I am curious as to how this player thinks Rift is deeper.
Well, I cannot answer for Thunderballs (*winces at name*) BUT I'm impressed with the lore and world. I think it has a kind of adultness (if that is a word ) that WoW doesn't. This is somewhat due to the differences in graphics. And I don't think anybody would say WoW graphics are not cartoony and have a kiddy feel.
I see the kind of roleplay happening in Rift (regularly, and in the open world) that I never saw in WoW and cannot imagine seeing in WoW. And I can even imagine RPing myself in a semi-serious manner.
So, from that perspective, I too see depth in Rift.
Presently, the water plane is "seeping" into Telara and I think it is done extremely well. All over the world you hear the crack of lightning, the fall of rain and the mood is that of a grey day. Water Rifts are beautiful with the cascading water and the colour of the sea life. Wonderful stuff.
From a longevity/content perspective, WoW clearly dominates Rift. People play WoW for years and years (God knows how) whereas most people (at least here) are fed up in 1-3 months with Rift.
Suits me. What a "normal" MMO player does in a few months takes me a year.
It is also excellent for beginners. If you on the other hand is really tired of Wow or similar games you should probably stay away because while Rift do have some new things playing it is very similar to the other games following in Everquests footprints.
My 2 minuses are for rather uninspired quests and a combat system that could be more interesting.
But it looks good, runs fine and is probably the best MMO to have been released since LOTRO so it is surely worth a trial for anyone but MMO burnouts.
Telling people to ignore reviews is a bit... over the top. Who are you to tell people to ignore the reviews? Maybe it's just a result of poor wording, and what you simply meant was to approach the game with an open mind. If that's the case, I do agree. That's the approach you should take with most any game, isn't it?
My personal opinion is that Rift is deadly booring. It might be my age showing, because I've played most of the "wow clones" before. If you're new to that kind of game then Rift might be just perfect for you. I couldnt get past the first hour of gameplay. And that's just me. I might judge a game pretty harshly by how it plays during the first hour or three.
Yea. Not seeing it. After he plays the game for 3 weeks he will be singing a different tune.
The crafting is even more of a joke than WoW's, and there is 0 economy. Where is the depth coming from?
Absolutely worth a trial(hell, I bought for 20 bucks and I had fun for 3 weeks). Even if you don't/never enjoyed WoW. Free is free, and its not a horrible game by any means.
Game runs great less bugs then most games. Fun till around level 20 then you dont see people much gets old very fast. Has some fun things that get old rifts are alot of fun at first then they get in the way. After a while it all seems the same. In time with more content added should be alot better and keep people longer.
I'm glad you like it, but it's just shy of delusional to say this game is nothing like WoW.

Same here. Played through all the Betas and sub'd for a month. You may not be in Azeroth anymore but you can sure see it from there.
I have been playing this game from day one and still enjoying it, still not seen everything in game too and thats another reason for me to keep playing. Once I have seen and done everything in game then maybe I might move on but at the moment I'm still hooked on it.
Basically I doubt anyone here as seen and done every single bit of content within the game including the new updated content coming along with each month.
By the end of the year at the current rate of updates the game will have a mass load of content to play around with.
Most New Skool players are starting to join them in the festivities.

Get off your high horse, all the OP is saying is don't write this game off just because others don't like it, hell I tried the trial and the game is not half as bad as some of the chicken littles say it is, and if more people would form their own oppinion on things instead of listening to every Tom, Dick and Harry's oppinion, they might find they like things that others don't. So I say the same thing as the OP, IGNORE the reviews, make up your own mind about things, you might be suprised.
Hm. Are you gonna listen to the guy that has been playing for 4 days, or the guy that has been playing for several months?
Considering one listens at all to opinions related to games (Grain of salt, etc.).
Some people like Rift, some don't. He has every right to disagree with the OP (And frankly, he has more merit).
Basically I doubt anyone here as seen and done every single bit of content within the game including the new updated content coming along with each month.
You'd be quite wrong.
Unless you consider gathering every single artifact 'content' and re-running the same dungeon in "Expert" mode, there are plenty of people who have done ALL the dungeons (normal and expert) along with ROS and GB time and time again. The PvP arenas are small and there aren't many so I'm still not sure what you mean by 'every single bit of content' because you're too vague.
If you really doubt that, you need to read the OFFICIAL forums a bit more often because when you can go level 1-50 in one month with no problem, it's not hard to see all there is in a game with maps as small as these.

Hmm, smelling advertising here, OP. Maybe paid for it too.
I burned out on RIFT after all the betas + 2 months live but do agree that it is much more than a WOW clone.
Give it another couple of weeks and you will understand why people are saying that this game is boring and a WoW clone
To be fair I always mantained this game feels a lot like Warhammer
I honestly find WoW more fun than this game, which says a lot

old skool mmo player would laugh at rift...

I trialed the game and i can safely say, this game has the most beautiful text that says Quest Completed or Level Up, that's all, peace!

I just bought the collector's edition through the current sale and I am really liking the game...much more than WoW.
