3. The Darkfall relaunch: First an ETA: Development should be completed sometime in August and we should know around that time when we’re going to release it and we’ll give out a release date and all the details. This relaunch is not an expansion. It’s a new game we’ve been developing in parallel with the current version of Darkfall. The scope is massive, and it has been difficult to stay on schedule after several unexpected issues we’ve had with the current version, changes and additions we decided to make for the new version, some business developments, and the decision to add the siege system into this version of the game rather than in the relaunch. There are shifting priorities having to do with business issues for this relaunch, and another part being some Asian developments we also need to take into consideration. We can assure you that everything we’re doing in this regard is in the best interest of our players and of Darkfall, and that the relaunch of the game will be very exciting for everyone.

In short No.
Back in actober 2010 in a post in announcement news section it has been clarified. DF2 would be a project in years to be released and it wouldn't replace current Darkfall.

They're being awfully vaugue about this but I have to admit I'm interested.
Well, they said "relaunch." So that means that either it's going to be a new game or everyone's going to be wiped, right?
I've never played DF but I think I might try it out as long as there's going to be a clean slate.
In the excerpt posted it says that its a new game they have been making along side the current DF.
This is all just spin.
It is unclear as to what he actually trying to say.
It doesnt matter. In a few days you can survive to vet players. In a few weeks you can kill vet players. No reason to have a clean slate.
The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
I will play, and play for a long ass time if they add in a skill cap, going up against the same builds over and over is really boring and predictable.
I agree, this is what killed DF for me. Without a skill cap, you're totally negating any necessity for independent or strategic thought regarding your character development, and ultimately the fights boil down to the same repeated tactics because everyone uses everything. Team work would actually matter in an environment where players can't do everything for themselves, and large scale PvP wouldn't soley consist of volleying spells between groups. Not to mention, dedicated crafters might find more insentive for spending the majority of their time making crap and harvesting resources if not everyone could create their own equipment or items.
There are decent arguments for having an open skill system, the way it is now, but in an open world game like DF there really needs to be a skill cap to keep things interesting. And sure, FOTM's happen, but rather than in the combination of abilities (like we see now, and everyone has access to the same shit) the flavor's would come in a variety of skill combinations (which we don't have now, and would make people choose between the access to different abilities). Personally, I don't understand why anyone wouldn't want a skill cap of some form.

They obvious shifted their plan, its pretty clear to me. Now what does it mean for the old players, i have no fucking idea, and they probably don't know either and are waititng to see the reactions, but its clear we are gonna loose a lot in the trade. Personally i don't care much i resubbed just for the summer up untill GW2, i'll maybe keep a sub if they don't fuck me up too much and if the "expension" caugh caugh "relaunch" is as good as they said. They always have done a good job to me at least, but the game was such on a low state at start, it really didn't make much difference. Maybe that "expension" relaunch a new game stuff really will as they claim who knows? I will not regrind for sure, jesus patch or not.
Also strategically i'm not sure a relaunch will help them a lot really, the game had a very bad naming, but some people watching their pvp vid kind of understood it wasn't that true, or isn't anymore, but those haters will wake up once more. I'm not sure a relaunch will help the game much, macroer and mob buggers will get an edge in a matter of days, so really i don't see a relaunch ie a wipe will help anything, in fact it will make the gap even more obvious if anything. Those bugging mob will have the skill maxed and the money overnight to meditate stat from day one, others will rage more... The same scenario more or less imo, who really want to go through that once more? i don't, and they are few other mmos going out exactly at that period. So i'm not sure if it will be good or bad. If they are not confident and the game sub is droping badly, they probably should do it, there is nothing to loose in pissing off few fan boys (at least if they don't plan in doing more mmos). If the game is growing they shouldn't, thats my 2cents.
its just a glorified update for the existing darkfall, except they will charge you the same price they did when you first baught the game. Not even going to wipe the server . All players will be transfered over to darkfall2 with their tiems and those who do not want darkfall2 will not be able to play.
Kinda sad they arent wiping sicne the game certainly needs one from what i hear. But if the grind is reduced and i can actually play a melee only character without being gimped to hell. I will actually give darkfall a go.

Link please, non of what you said was stated. You don't know if it will be just an expansion, a new version of the game you will have to pay for or not, if you will keep your character or not. None of this was confirmed anywhere. You are just making supposition here, and present them as fact.
Well if this makes the game alot better i would't mind giving this game a go

It doesn't have to be a skill-cap in the sense that you two are thinking, though. I'm rather opposed to a skill-cap because sometimes I might want to one thing and then other times I might want to do other things. But you are both certainly right in my opinion that there needs to be something done to mitigate what would happen in an open-ended skill system game.
Eve has the real-time training to hamper that, especially with regards to manufacturing and has combat or mining players restricted to a certain role based on the ships and equipment they have. Guild wars limits players by restricting them to two "classes" and eight abilities. Final Fantasy 14 restricts players by giving them a set amount of points and then having players choose abilities that add up to at most the amount of points they have. So some kind of system that just limits what a player could do at any one time might be just as effective at promoting strategy and tactical decisions, rather than just limiting what any one character can do.

an open skill system like in darkfall, is the easiest way to balance a combat system. Mainly because everyone is free to use everything no attempt at balancing melee to magery or archery to magery etc is needed. Because everyone can use everything so balancing becomes much less of an issue. This is either a good or bad thing depending on what you want from a game.
But it has been confirmed there will be no wipe for darkfall2.

imo darkfall2 is the relaunch of darkfall1 with the massive amounts of updates they have been planning on releasing for a long time. updates like:
-whole new racial models and textures
-a complete restructuring of the world map
-a complete restructuring of mob spawns and dungeons
-tons of new items
-a new armor system designed to mimic prestige classes
-features like a new siege system, and an interactive world map
darkfall2 is a bad term because it has been stated earlier that av is working on a game to replace DF, but this is different than a relaunch of darkfall1. Av has had paralell teams working on a new game and separate expansions and updates for a while now
so does that warrent having to pay full price for darkfall2 when you already baught darkfall1? or is it really not a new game?
the question the dakrfall community should be asking is "how much will darkfall2 cost?" why else would you relaunch a game with a different name and call it a sequel unless you were after more money from your palyer base.

Yet still grind, lack of fun factor and shitty melee system...or maybe ? Who knows maybe Tasos actually will turn DF in something playable for competitive players. See you in 2014 then.
Once more give a link, the only link that "confirm" your assomption are old link that clearly stated that they will make a huge expansion that big that the game will feel like a new game. But in the last blog it is pretty clear they said it wont be an expansion anymore but a whole new game, like a project they worked on parallel to darkfall; so they clearly changed their mind and marketing plan. So once more deliver a proper link, they are none i know of.
Ugh, can't believe I'm finding myself back here talking about DF. I was more or less a fan boy of the game for years pre-launch. Ended up subbing for two months after beta (cancelled) and then for one more month sometime after the NA server became available. Played with Blood originally on Cairne.
This game had a lot of high points and some great vision but overall that left me expecting a modern UO but unfortunately the execution was poor. Can't totally fault such a (relatively) small company for not pulling off a game of this scope but they really should have considered how much they could manage. I can say there was a fair bit of improvement in the year I was away which is the only reason I have a bit of interest in whatever the hell DF2 actually turns out being.
I agree with an earlier poster, the no skill-cap was a huge turn-off for me. It just never made sense to me to allow every player to be a jack of all trades while going down the one char per account path (I loooved one char per account).
Whatever DF2 ends up being, I'll be hoping for a fresh server. That's a must for me to considering handing money over again.
EDIT: Rofl at my old sig.

There wont be be a server wipe. If the relaunch wont include a mass immigration there aren't big chances of a new server. There is a chance they launch a asia server , that would get you the opportunity to play on a fresh server but..
Why you would want a fresh server ? Meditation and the Armor specs / Prestige titles will make skill progression easy mode and in general if you not a hardcore player (timely wise) wouldn't you fall behind the progression of others sooner or later anyway ? NA was a fresh new server when it launched ...

If it's a "brand new game" that they are devoloping, it would have to be a new server. Why would they allow migration of already created characters to a new game that may have a different ruleset? If, in fact, it is an entirely new game, a new server is almost definitely needed, without allowing transfers from Darkfall 1.
Sounds like a lot of great stuff is coming to DF, but I will hold on giving any praise to AV, since they have failed to deliver everytime so far.
I think it is interesting that no one has commented on the biggest line in the blog:
There are shifting priorities having to do with business issues for this relaunch, and another part being some Asian developments we also need to take into consideration.
That line screams cash shop.
I guess I didn't make it clear enough. DF2 would require some form of 'cap' to keep me interested.
And if it's a new game, I sure as hell wouldn't want transfers.

Asian games exist without cash shop. It screams nothing, you are looking into something with assumptions. Wait and see, do not expect, do not guess. Just wait.
Im a little unclear on whats going on here, ok so we will have darkfall2. What happens to darkfall1? does it remain active and players joinning darkfall2 start afresh? or does darkfall1 get taken down and darkfall2 replaces it? but characters and items are transfered to darkfall2 from darkfall1?
