Poppinjay, the pic on the right looks more realistic and you know it.
I don't want to get into a silly argument of what is realistic and what's not. Everyone has their own understanding and limits of what's OK and what's not. For me, the Aion's girl's shoulderpads in your pic are a bit over the top and i call these things, sticking out of her shoulders, unrealistic and unneeded But to each their own. If aion was my first game, i would probably didn't even notice those shoulders.
On the other hand, i totally agree that Rift's itemization is yet poor. And i always want differently looking armor or weapons. Being able to choose from a lot of styles is a good thing. But i believe Rift will add a lot of things. I remember in EQ, at first, bronze plate armor (which was plain yellow) was uber. Everything comes with time.
I love Rifts armor and weapons, as well as the general overall graffix, very pleasing to the eye, also the storyline is great as it leaves the ending open for great innovative ideas and expansions for the future. Sorry I have come to love this game, it has been a long time since an mmo has pulled me in like Rift does.
I like the fasct that dyeing and wardrobe options are available. I wish theres was the option for weapons and shields but i wouldnt doubt it wont happen in the future

No, that's what Rift gear looks like to someone with a shitty graphics card. so it would look like a better cookie with a better graphics card? You'd be able to see all 26 chocolate chips with a top notch raid card. You can only see 19 chips with a shitty one.
@Barkopolo: Laugh a little. RIFT is a decent game but seriously if you're going to get bent out of shape over a shield that seriously looks like a fudge cookie as an epic drop, you are taking gaming WAY to much to heart. Trion had to expect that when you attach that to a purple item so they don't ban the threads on their forum laughing at it.. why are you mad?
The shield (and armors) are what they are.. basic for several weeks of gameplay. Just laugh a little at the crappiness of them now and when RIFT is one year old with new sets, you'll be able to look back and laugh after the new glowy ones are introduced.

For a fantasy world, there IS no realism.
Do you somehow think they modeled RIFT from the Middle Ages or something? No. They looked at some pics from then and combined it with their (or lack of) imagination. AION did the same THING.
You see the AION templar has basically the same setup, the only different is style of gear.. more flashy. The shoulders are actually more realistic to me than RIFTs because where is a tank at? Front line fighting hand to hand vs other tanks. Hence the blades on her armor make more 'realistic' sense in a fantasy world.
This is what I mean about your point 'realism'. It's fake and doesn't exit as it's a game.

If they didn't have this as a 2011 game, I'd wonder what the hell was wrong with them.
Even F2Ps have this now as standard pretty much, so in this point I don't think they get points for having things they are supposed to have in a modern MMO.

So doing what they're supposed to do doesn't deserve points? Seems like you just don't like giving out points (or you dislike Rift).

When you buy a car and it has a radio, do you get excited and think "Man, Chrysler is a really good car company. I have a radio." No.
If you go to a restaurant and they give you some breadsticks before your meal, do you think "Man, this is one high class joint. I just got some breadsticks." No.
You buy a computer and it comes with a monitor do you think "Holy crap! They just gave me a monitor." No.
Why? Because you expect to have that in your products as standard because everyone else mostly has it.
It's 2011. FTP games have things like basic gear/uniform dyes and such. If RIFT had buildable housing, I'd say "Dude, this game has buildable housing. That is awesome", then they'd deserve credit. That isn't in MOST mmos nowadays but only a small few.
Raise your expectations and save your compliments for those. That's why companies keep putting out bland products as MMOs. Players keep clapping and giving "attaboys" for the mundane.
"OMG, this game has few bugs!" is only a compliment because consumers/players have come to ACCEPT crappy, buggy, and slipshod work as 'standard'. Players have lowered their standards to 'Meh, all games are buggy' so now the regular is 'great'.

Ok. If there is NO realism in fantasy world, then why do we shoot fireballs or ice spears, when using magic? Why not just blink an eye? Or kill with our thoughts? Or turn into King Kong, which kills everything in it's path on game world?
There's always realism in Fantasy world. There's certain limits. And armor has more or less realistic looks.
And those gigantic spikes on Aion's girl in your picture would actually hurt her, she couldn't raise her arms not hurting them to the spikes How would she raise her sword?
And btw, yes, big part of the fantasy games armor comes somewhat from middle ages.
I actually started the "realism in fantasy" argument, sorry

Give them points for what? the most basic feature which even F2P MMOS have at release? I don't even dislike Rift but can not ignore the fact that Trion cut too many corners in production and Art Department is one of them.

You don't think spikes on shoulders is realistic because in your mind, you can't fathom why a tank would wear that, right?
The aethestics are needlessly tied to 'realism' and it's not where it should be. If you see a mage with spiked iron shoulders, yes.. that's not 'realistic' because mages typical use their mouths or wave their arms to cast spells and aren't near the front line melees. That's 'realism'.
Two scantily clad female tanks in AION and RIFT aren't 'realistic' at all because the whole midsection, side, back of legs, arms, etc is exposed. Most of the helmets for females in RIFT don't even have visors available but the men do.. how is THAT realistic?
Don't confuse style with functionality/realism which is what you appear are doing.
There's a lot of good looking armor in Rift, but then again there's also a lot of really bad looking gear. The main problem is there's simply not enough armor variety, and while leveling, you'll constantly get gear that looks exactly like the gear you had previously or several levels before.
Okay so the picture the OP posted was looking pretty bad..
I did play Rift but only to test in beta, wasn't bothered by the looks, actually felt they looked alright, not awesome, but okay.
Wanted to see more armor due to this topic and it's repliesandI thought of looking abit into it, while what I found was mostly beta, I asume not much has changed? While I see the variety is limited it doesn't look as bad as I read many replies it seems to look...right?

Who's bent out of shape? Personally, I could care less what Rift looks like. What I don't like are people who purposely reduce resolutions and then take screenshots to support whatever opinion they have about a game's graphics. You know, like you did.
Either that, or you have one really low-end graphics card. In that case, you might want to consider minesweeper.

Reading must be hard isn't it? it is when steam is coming out of your ears. lol
OP is talking about the bad art design and reuse of low lvl weapon skins on higher level epics. It has nothing to do with overall graphics of the game. So even if he posts a high resolution pictures a cookie will still look like a cookie.

You, or else you wouldn't have said that shield is only a victim of low resolutions (shitty card).
When that guy submitted the picture, he wasn't talking about 'textures' or 'resolutions', which is pretty much all a graphics card addresses.
I don't care what kind of card you have or how much it costs, the only difference between the shield shown as normal and the shield show as 'high resolution' is the detail count.
The fudge stripes would still be there on that shield no matter what card you used. No one intentionally lowered resolution lol.
By the way, I only copied the pic AS IS from the RIFT forums, I didn't lower any resolution and that's not my thread, lol. Why don't you try that yourself, go there and look.
Or better yet, why don't you take a picture of your RIFT toon at your highest resolution and post it here as an excellent rebuttal? That way, you know no one tampered with the picture.

No, it really does look like that. If I still had my sub, I would post my very lame looking rogue, lvl 50.
Looked like a beggar at lvl 1, and looked like a beggar at lvl 50.

Really the best graphics card in the world can't save RIFT from boring color palettes, poor design, and just plain rushed artwork.
