I get the impression from these harpies in the clip that they are just the same. They are just mad that some guys are spending their free time doing what they want to do rather than doing what a woman wants them to do. They are playing the shame game. and that guy is their duitiful beta yes boy, quick to agree so as to gain their approval and through that the approval of the women watching.

Well sorry, I don't do what I do to get the approval of a woman, least of all one of these aging harpies. I game when I want to game. I drink when I want to drink, I play golf (badly) when I want to play golf and I ride my motorcycle when I want to feel the wind on my face. And I have all the female approval I want when my daughters and granddaughters come to visit, who spend more time with me than they do with their natural mother.

Do what it is you want to do. Sports, cars, motorcycles, games, books, whatever. And love the women who love you regardless what you do.

I think people who spend all morning watching a four hour TV show are weird and need to do something better with their time, like get a job.

Idk.. the current state of MMO's has made me seriously consider not dropping money on a new computer upgrade... I don't see the point in paying for better graphics for mediocre game play.. or even continuing to play games :

It's sad its come to this for me.. I really enjoyed mmo's for a long time :(

Old people should do old people stuff... Like playing chess while listening to BBC Radio 4, drinking whisky in an old people's home.

    /sarcasm

Well to be honest probably the older generation are more easily to get along with in the MMO community.

    It's marketing strategy.

TV stations are losing their 30+ audience to interactive media (videogames). They have to ridicule those who leave, or else lose ratings and cash.

Another reason could be the switches in the expected roles of men and women in society. Once women were expected to be almost slaves, they liberated themselves and now they strive for equality. But men also were expected to live their lives only to settle down and devote themselves to their families and work. And now we as men are being liberated too from those expected roles and find that we must also have time for our enjoyment, even for time-consuming enjoyment like videogames. So women now are angry at us for not being the ones who always provide for them, and always settle down with them and the mass media reflects those societal changes.

If it wasn't for older gamers playing games throughout the years there wouldn't be much of a gaming genre today for younger gamers to enjoy.

Ain't these figures including online based gaming(java, flash, facebook, browser...).

What's the average age of the dedicated hardcore gamer?

All men are not experiencing that and all women are not like that.  I'm a woman, for instance, and I think that men that DON'T play video games are probably just too stupid to understand the technology. (Of course I know that is a generalization that doesn't apply in ALL cases, but I'm certain in does in SOME.)  Men that game.....yup.....most of them are just smarter than the average Joe.  Just my opinion.

I am 57 and have been computer gaming for years, I played x box for a few years, playstation 2 , even intellivistion , I will never forget when my brother brought home pong and we were in total awe, we could see the future and knew it was going to be fun. gaming is simply a hobby that you enjoy, my brother in law spends many hours a week wood working, fixing stuff around his house that does not even need fixing-hey thats his hobby more power to him.  Why Today show would knock someones hobby is beyond me

They're in sense pretty right... but I think it was swayed a bit. I think they're thinking of 30 year olds who consisently sit down in a basement with no life playing games. That would be weird indeed.

Uhh why would that be wierd?  Just curious.  I am not defending that type of lifestyle, but really, people should be able to do whatever the hell they want in the privacy of their own hom, as long as they aren't breaking any laws or harming other people in the process.

I find it hard to believe that Kathy Gifford think she has any right to pass judgement on someone else.  Personally I think running a company that employs slave labor and continually being married to drunkard/womanizer is a bit odd myself.  I just laugh when I hear the name Hoda.  It sounds like something George Lucas would come up with.

    Pretty disgusting all in all.

Look, it has nothing to do with being out of touch.

I think gamers (and many people on this forum perhaps?) believe that since there are more people playing games than ever before, it's suddenly mainstream.

The awareness might be more mainstream and there might indeed be more people playing than ever before, but show up to any office and you aren't going to find a lot of people talking in earnest about their gaming  favorite hobby.

Just listening to some of the discussions at PAX I can't sometimes feel that it's all a bit nerdy in how its discussed.

the reality is that you have a lot of geeky people (in a good way) who are excited about games and want to discuss to the smallest detail regarding what those games are about.

But to someone who is not indoctrinated into the gamer life style it can all feel a bit uncomforable.

Imagine my surprise a few years ago when I found out that one of our higher marketing people played WoW? It was like we two were the sole individuals in a large company that knew each other's dirty secrets.

Of course the response to that might be "well maybe more people play games than you know". That might very well be. But from the discussions I heard around the office over years, most people did not play games. One person even looked at me quizzically and asked "adults actually do that?"

most of my friends just listen politely and smile when I talk about my gaming habits. It's cool, I love them dearly, but the reality for my life is that in every office I have worked I was a minority. Which is fine, I don't talk about my gaming habits and I'm sure those with leather fetishes and dominatrix fantasies dont' talk about their hobbies and interests.

    It's all good. image

But in the end, if gamers want to be seen as more elevated than they are and more normal like, say, avid sports fans (um joke there), they need to present themselves as such. Too many times I've actually seen an extremely nerdy guy or gal who could only express themselvs in a way that seemed very intense and very over the top and made many people feel quite uncomfortable. I once witnessed a guy on the T (subway in Boston) going on and on in an overly excitedd way about how he saved a princess in some D&D game. It was like he was living it all out right there for the entire subway car to see and year. The woman he was with just kept nodding and smiling but you could tell it was more amusing to her than anything else. I could only just shake my head and cringe at his in depth explanation that seemed drawn out of some bad after school special.

It's as if a great many gamers just don't have enough social skills or social intelligence to conduct themselves in a way that works day to day.

People are sometimes surprised I play games. I will calmly mention my hobby but i won't go on and on bending their ears about stats and how I saved a NPC and how my + 5 sword of evermore cleaved my enemies in twain and I then strode up to claim the treasure.

It has to all be done in a less intense way and it's always about baby steps when talking to non gamers.

Some people watch TV for like 7 hours per day, what's wrong with playing videogames instead of listening to a static show?

This is why I love my wife so very much. She realized, early on, that if I'm at the computer playing a game in the evenings, I'm at home, not out god-knows-where doing god-knows-what AND I am more than happy to break away if she wants to spend time with me or needs me to do some honey-dos.

This clearly being a opinion (on my own part as we all see different) I feel that it's weird because if you're a 30 year old man sitting in a basement all day playing games what have you done productive or to of lived for? I say it in sense.. to those mainly who have fully capable bodies to do day to day activities that other human beings that cannot would die for.

To me it's wrong.. as it comes off as a waste to me. I am not one of those who likes to pass judgement on certain people.. but in this circumstance I feel it's nessecary. Also I am not one of those disabled rest assured.. I just feel their pain.

Not you.. then in this perspective. I said 30 year olds who have no life and consisently sit in a basement playing games. You seem to clearly have a life (in my view) with a wife and kids, and maintain a job. I don't see how you'd fall in this category..?

Good read OP. It's amusing how ignorant people can be. This is a simple and trivial cultural stigma that does this. So to them it ok to play games with your kids as long as you do not like them yourself?

You should be thinking about other things by the time your 30? Other things like getting laid? Or hold on a second do they figure people under 30 can only think about one thing?

The only other things I can think that you'd want to think about at the age of thirty are politics and death. Frankly, I am already wise beyond my years. I don't want to spend more time keeping up with politics and learning about life any more than I already am by the time I hit 30.

If I did I would become a complete egotist unable to support a relationship because I would have little tolerance for those who exhibitted a lack of simple understanding.
