The first thing they need to do is make crafting amazing. make it deep. add housing fast, make the world huge and off the rails so you can explore.
Allow players to create new characters that come from the elemental planes to attack Telara. if your going with a better Wow then you need monsters versus the good looking people. Not good looking people attacking not so good looking people across the bridge. you need to have rifts dump new monster players in to Telara to fight the humanoids.
Allow new elemental players to create PVP raids that open rifts into Telara like they do now (NPC's) but with new characters from the planes you create.
add all that then TOR what? GW2 what? you need to offer more then just what this guy is talking about. that only gives level capped players something to do.
what i suggested kills enough time with deep crafting and trying the new house out and decorating it,Plus rolling new elemental toons a huge time gap to work on the first expansion before they get bored.
and by the time they get bored with all that , you should have TOR out and GW2 and you know what to make that will draw players from those games.
Also pets are so lame in rift. make pets amazing and mix it up give them their own armor/ability's that make sense.
I hope this isn't going to turn into a PVP only game. If you put Open World PvP On PVE Servers your going to lose A LOT of subscriptions...There is already enough of that. Jerks laying in wait for people to attack a PVP-Enable NPC just so they can slaughter the player when hes set PVP by defensing himself.
Believe me when i say that RIFT is going to suffer big time when SWTOR/GW hit's the MMo world. All the fanboys can shout "o no it won't" but it will be thoses that hit the cancel button before anyone.
The game is shallow and really hasn't got enough going on to even be in the same room as the other two MMo mentioned.
Say what you want but ill be back for the "i told you so" thread in six months time.

It sounds like Rift is great at pumping out new content, but the core problems arent being changed, such as boring combat, copycat skills, PVE on rails, repetitive rifts, invasions, events, lack of endgame.
I lasted two months, two lvl 50 chars, 2 lvl 20+ and burned out on the gear grinding for my main.....I was just passing time until SWTOR pulled their heads out.....We'll see.....Will I go back to RIFT...................probably not...........It was a fun 2 months but I'm tired of fantasy and primed for sci-fi again.....fingers crossed.....pew pew
Another boring WoW clone - go this quest hub, do 5 quests, then go down the road to the next quest hub, repeat until you fall asleep or realize your life is finite. Combat is standard 1, 1, 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 4, repeat.
I do need to give some props though - nice graphics, fun character build system, stable tech both client and server, and a dev/producer team that is A+ in terms of content and communication.
Just wish they would have done something, anything, to move this genre forward.
whatever they do, they had better do it before swtor and gw2 come out. Otherwise alot of people wont notice and wont care. New-and-shiny trumps "coming soon".

Already to late for me. Gave up on Rift. Good game but just can't bring myself to log-in anymore...
A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...
There will be more ways for a casual to do the daily PvP stuff and get the rewards, but they’ll just never beat those guys who play 12 hours a day, and that’s okay.
Well, that may be okay for someone who can play 12 hours a day, but most people have a life (even if it's half a life), job, or some type of other commitment. I personally enjoy PVP games based on skill and thought process. If a player improves his skill / thoughts through countless hours per day of gameplay, well no problem. But if they just have better gear or special skills (soul ranks) because they can game 12 hours a day as Scott is referring to, I'll move on to the next game or keep living my life while I wait for a skill based game.
Then play Guild Wars and wait for Guild Wars 2 to release. Personally i will play Rift AND Guild Wars 2.

If you burned out, then you played too much, too often.
I think Scott gets it. It's just that the ideas aren't always implemented very well into the game. Basically, Rift eventually turns into every other MMO as you prgress along and the story isn't very interesting. The rifts also go from the best part of the game 1-25 or 30 to the worst part ... "I can't believe that I have to do another raid rift to help people gear up."
Planar devices and rewards are also one of the most neglected item slots on most players due to lack of information on Trion's part. That means it takes even longer to gear up new level 50's for raiding. I'm a realtively verteran MMO player and I didn't even realize that I could put a lesser planar reward into a greater planar reward spot on my device for 3 weeks.
If you don't compile a game guide on your own or have a great guild created guide, Rift can be very frustrating and it's due to poor information flow on Trion's part.
I don't even think they know their own game. It is nothing other than a RTS style game, based in a fake MMO world.
Nobody really cares about the backdrop anyways, it's all trivial and overdone to begine with. Nothing new. So the focus is on personal character builds and tactics & techniques! He doesn't even realize the direction the game should take. To me, it is not even a MMORPG, but more like PlanetSide, of live-action combat.
This guy is trying to sell the game to everone through lip service, instead of flexing the games strnegths and letting it be, what it is.
"No they are not charity. That is where the whales come in. (I play for free. Whales pays.) Devs get a business. That is how it works."
SW:tor looks like crap and will cater to the kiddies that really miss their wow.
This is probably the dumbest thing I've ever read on mmorpg.com
Rift is boring, they didnt bring anything new to the mmo scene, which swtor and GW2 will, eod.
Actually, I agree with Rogosh, though I'd never say it like that, its pretty much how I feel. Rift has dynamic content, events and public grouping to spice up the normal questing. SWTOR will be back to solo quest grind. The moment I read that the first quest for one class (Sith, I think it was) was a completely bland kill 10 space slugs I was thinking lol no thanks.
I think a lot of people will be a bit dissapointed by SWTOR.
GW2, well that is a different kettle of fish. It has dynamic content. Will definitely be trying it, but I tried GW twice and it just didn't work for me so I may stick with Rift for a long time.
Like someone posted a few posts up, I too will be playing Rift and GW2. SWTOR is and will not be the answer for me, and I love star wars.
I agree with the above two posters. I think SW:ToR is not for me and I was pumped up about this game a year ago or so. I feel glum about Bioware recently.
Rift is a decent all round game. Not sure why people are so willing to bash it when there is so much worse out there...
Not really bashing Rift...just I see it for what it is, a WoW clone. Sure there are a lot worse games out there, but as a gamer I look for new challenges. MMORPG seem to love Torchlight as well and while it makes a good cheap STeam/XBLA download it is a clone and when Diablo 3 hits we won't be thinking about it any more. Same deal with Rift...GW2 and SW:TOR look the best prospects for a new mmo on the horizon, the ammount of game in both cases that has been developed is staggering.

Like in many other supposed to be interviews, the guys are dodging the point in about every answer. I wish one would really nail them down to it.
The rest is the typical "soon", "make shure to check it out", "we are excited about the things to come" PR.
I'd also like to know what's up with addons.

Still the rift world is too small, too linear and too "purple" ... :-(
EDIT: nevermind
The "interview" actually limits itself to "We plan to improve pvp and instances, no more real news above that".
Whole read was a waste of time, just like the game itself.

I dont miss WoW but I do miss the Pew-Pew and the hrmmm, vrooom, hrmmmmm (How does one type the sounds that lightsabers make )!!

I think you underestimate Trion. So far, they roll out fixes and content faster than any other mmo developer currently.
the future of Rift is that it will probably go FTP
