but they are worried, which is why they are holding diablo 3 (a finished game) so they can release it at the same time tor does.

the very reason they still don't have a release date is to combat blizzard doing that.

no company in their right mind would like to release aginst another top teir game at the same time..that means one or the other wouldnt sell more than the other..on diff weeks they both get their big pay checks

Nope it won't, as it didn't really bring any thing new to the table, and 1 of the let down for me is its.animation.

After wow, except Korean mmo, no other mmo have that smooth combat animations

Will it lowers wow sub? Definitely, but dethrone? Nope

yes, because wow did bring new things to the table when it launched? i will not be surprised to see tor have more subs than wow briefly after it launches.

star wars fans + bioware fans + mmo/wow fans looking for something new = potential to have more subs than wow does.

Except that Bioware will have a limited release for TOR and will only release it in NA and EU while WoW is worldwide and most of it's players are in fact in Asia. Maybe if you only counted WoW's American and Europeon subsciptions might TOR come close to their subscriber numbers...maybe, and that's a pretty big maybe.

Blizzard doesnt release actual numbers anyone who thinks they do is fooling themselfs.  Example would be how many people in Asia havent logged on in years yet have a few minutes or hours left in playtime ?   Id bet alot.  You can bet they count them as subscribers to boost the fake numbers.

Sigh...yet another who has not fully investigaed TOR. First off, saying it "didn't bring" is off as the game is not even out yet. Also, go read and listen. You will find that TOR is doing plenty that is bringing something new and different to the table, even aside from the completely VO acting with every character and dialogue choices with an impact, which is new to the table in and of itself.

Seriously though, before you write the game off as brining nothing new go and get informed on the game, you might be a little suprised. Also, if you get some of the HD game footage it looks way better than you might think.

Anyone who thinks these 2 companys would even do that are idiots.   When do you ever see 2 top movies come out on the same weekend ?  Never  you think anyone was saying im gonna wait and release my movie the same weekend harry potter comes out ?  lol comeon now.   They purposly spread the games out so they dont have to compete so both companys get paid.

Oh and diablo 3 is being held back because its being developed for the console also.

If TOR is a better game, then in theory it could eventually take down WoW no? Looks to be the same game mechanics for the most part, along with I think WoW actually looking better (and I'm a SW fan) so I don't really see it happening.

Seeing as nobody in here has played TOR however, the whole topic is irrelavent.

WOW is yesterdays news. The people that play it wont give it up because they wasted most of their life playing it. All for nothing the time of WOW is nearing it's end they have already went nearly free to play with the unlimited trial.

It's dying in north america. asians will keep it afloat for a few more years but it' starting to look like old EQ. We should be happy it is.

It's age of TOR and guild wars 2. Wow is done now we need to band together and play the only 2 games coming that matter. Time to put the old boy down for good and not soon enough it was.

  • Even bad games don't die.  As someone else said, SWTOR won't kill WoW but will dethrone it.  SWTOR will probably become the most popular MMO in NA/EU in terms of subscriptions.

I don't buy the fanboi argument of "Only Blizzard will kill WoW".  WoW is not some unbeatable entity people have made it seem.  A better game will dethrone WoW, thus far none has been "better" in terms of the mass market appeal.

    Three cheers for TOR!

Anyways, I still think WoW will have more subs for awhile.

  • katasteelkatasteel Member UncommonPosts: 30

Not really, I have no interest in SWTOR at all.

    Wow is fantasy.

Star Wars is ...well Star Wars.

  • lunatislunatis Member UncommonPosts: 261

I really want to like star wars, but god damnit, games like mass effect have cooler graphics... and it's also made by bioware!

Get done with the old troopers design, it's out dated!

Nobody will dress like that in the future ever!

Anyhow, the game seems to bring a few things, like housing, but whatever!

As I said upthread, a little decent competition could/should do WoW a world of good.  But honestly, I'll wager even Blizzard's next MMO won't be Fantasy genre again.

SW is also fantasy, only swords are made of light and the princess travels in a spaceship.

Can't really argue with that. The force is just another thing to call magic.

I personally don't think it will "take down" WOW. It will dent WOW's numbers along with GW2.

    In Bioware we trust!

But I bet this game is STILL going to be as great. And no there is not going to be a WOW killer. Thats like saying that Kobe Bryant or Lebran James is a Michael Jordan Killer. Same core dominating style. But different!

    This.

The original SW had more in common with Westerns than fantasy.  Even Lucas said so.

But regardless of attempts at the redefinition game, it is a different genre--which the industry sorely needs more of.

who creates these kind of threads..12yr olds?

who cares if  1 mmo falls and 1 stands alone..wouldnt you want most mmo's be a huge succes?

wouldnt you want a bunch of great mmo's to play instead of one top teir?

i know everyone hates wow and how it reinvented the mmo genra "theampark" but as long as its a huge succes its known that the mmo world isnt dead " no i dont play wow nor any mmo atm"

if its  a good / great game then fine ..good for lucas arts but following their trac record it will prolly fall flat on its face like most of their titles do..it seems they always gotta have some alt partnership with someone and the other 1/2 comes along to kill it in some way or another and yes i know soe is BS.. this will prolly fall along the same path seeing lucas arts like to create a buzz with 1 title make quick cash ..then turn around and try to pump out 2-4 more titles to keep the snowball rolling

"finally swtor will take down world of warcraft"  deserves a lol irl and a eye roll follwed by a head shake

You guys (mostly fanboys) shouldnt care if WoW gets dethroned or not. Look those games were made to manipulate your brains to milk as much money from you as u have. Companys are made to make MONEY:

It doesnt matter who gets the money, they are both winners, mmorpg players are the losers.

Does anyone even care what mmo takes a large base from WoW? WIll it make the said game more enjoyable ? DOes it impact your life in any way? Not really. Play a game you like and others do the same. Who really cares if it has 400k players or 4mill. If everyone is having fun with their game of choices who cares?

With only release plans currently for North America & selected European Countries and absolutely no word on when/if any other countries will be getting access I dont think so.

You cant dethrone one service if you dont offer another service to the same users base....

Electronic Arts Reports Q1 FY12 Financial Results

Battlefield 3 Pre-Orders Up More Than 10x Battlefield: Bad Company 2

Star Wars: The Old Republic Breaks EA Record For Pre-Orders

Life to date, including digital and mobile downloads, FIFA 11 sold in nearly 15 million units and Battlefield: Bad Company™ 2 sold in over nine million units, demonstrating strong cross-platform results

Now i dont know if they compare BF3 preorder to BFBC2 preorder sales or life to date sales.

But the preorders for SW:TOR sounds huge.

And yes i know that an MMO success is in the long run.
