A very well done GTA could be the ultimate pvp "cops vs robbers" game of all time.  With what Rockstar brought to the consoles, a MMO version would have endless customizable options possibly on a CoX level.  A pvp world within the GTA world would be simply amazing.  I have endless ideas for a game like this if only I had the funds to implement them!

I would love to see a Star Ocean MMO. Till the end of time is probably one of my favorite RPGs, and it mixed a lot of settings with all the different areas. The weapons and classes were amazing, and the synthesizing would make a great profession.

The Saga of the Exiles (Many Coloured Land) by Julian May.

Three factions, Tanu, Firvulag and Free Human/Howler Alliance.

Would probably have to drop Farsense though.

    Also

    Dune would be excellent too.

Personally I would love to see a game based on Starship Troopers, not the craptastic movie, but the book.

I too would love to see shadowrun or battletech.  Both of them are currently owned by Catalyst Game Lab, which was started by many of the original game designers and writers.  They have another website where you can get new fiction and game supplements

another interesting one might be call of cthulhu

A sci-fi MMO set in the Alliance-Union Universe by C.J. Cherryh, preferably focused on the Hani/Kif/Mahendo'sat/Stsho/Knnn/Tc'a quandrant. Throw in the roving Humans for good measure.

Another vote for the Malazan world by Erikson, who has actually commented that he's waiting for the right pitch to license the setting.

Mass Effect. I'd much prefer Bioware did this as their MMO than SWTOR.

The whole beauty of Gateway is the Fear Lottery.  A little too random-death frustration for an MMO?  Not sure it translates well.

Same thing keeps me from mentioning Aahz and Skeeve (another fine myth etc.)  The whimsical nature of the books wouldn't translate into MMO terribly well.  Discworld games have certainly never done well, Hitchhiker's Guide didn't dazzle either.

A walking dead / resident evil / 24 days alter type mmo would be sweet. imagine if someone made a deep sandbox style but with diablo like combat IE massive aoe or 1000000s of zombies at a time :)

Really would makea  great sandbox .. I mean the world has basically been destroyed and the zombies have no central intelligence ... so its a few ppl, with a main city and litereally zillions of zombies :)

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

Wild West MMO that incorporates FPS mechanics and has no rule sets but those the players make......just as the Wild West was.

Also...so much of what made the show great was not visual. It was character driven. It would be hard to see that same thing played out in a game, but I would like to see it tried...a good sandbox.

no ruleset is talked about a lot .. but its pretty hard to do .. or at least hard for me to fathom. Somehow those of us looking for something like this need to find a better way of defining it.

Games have to have a certain amount of ruleset. They all break down to 1s and 0s .. if/then .. essentially. You simply can't code enough 1s and 0s to satisfy everyones wide open imagination.

There would be a limit on the number of bullets in your gun for example. They might make invention possible and allow for 8 and 12 shooters .. but in a wild west mmo .. that would be something I could see as a ruleset.

The first thing I think that needs to happen is someone needs to have the balls to just didtch pvp ... or make it what it inevitable is which is an unbalanced free for all with no real rewards other than bragging rights. Let eveyone have their pvp fotm alt for pvp that no one invites into raids. It actually worked fine in wow for a long time .. until they decided everything had to be fair. PvP imo was infinitely better when it was all kinds of levels fighting it out between SS and TM ... great times. No rules .. not reasons .. just pure hatred (or fun factor).

Even the implementation of the rank system was fine .. it was the BGs and the gear honor points that made it boring for me. I remember just absolutely giving up one day in the frost area right around the time the games went from 3 hours possibly to Alliance steamrolling the pve captain .. what a joke it became.

anyway .. im sufficiently off my own topic now :)

    /cheers

May still be in Probate.  Or just waiting for the biggest cash offer.

IIRC, his wife refuses to let the rights be given out for movies, games, etc.

So don't expect it any time soon.

I'd like to see, "The Wizarding World Online." (AKA Harry Potter). But it would have to be based before Harry's birth, during the first major war between the Order (and the rest of the Wizarding World) and Death Eaters (as well as the rest of voldemorts army).

I feel it would be rather complicated to do though. I would prefer, if it were to ever be made, to have players start out as students in Hogwarts (or perhaps even let playrs start out at Durmstrang or Beauxbatons). Then chose their House for some basic class perks, then perhaps as you level up through the tutorials and first couple of quests, you chose your majors (by attending classes, and doing quests for the classes you want to major in), graduate from Hogwarts, then decide wether to join the Order, or Voldemorts army.

A big issue I see is that there isn't a lot of background knowledge about the Wizarding World, it's creatures, events, schools other than Hogwarts, etc. It would take a considerable amount of time writing up more lore for everything, and I doubt Rowling is willing to do it, or sell the IP to someone who would.

So many good ideas. I really have to pitch my vote in favor of something that hasn't been done. I think this fixation the industry has on all of these specific .. movie branded .. IPs is driving them down a road where at the end, all of the games are sellouts. The good ones (at least my favorite ones) were mot Specific IPs as such. EQ, Vanguard, Ryzom, the original warcraft ... they didn't have a blockbuster looking over their shoulders. They did what they wanted to do ... not what someone felt some board game, movie ... or any other IP told them they should do.

Earthdawn for example .. is probably obscure enough that a dev team could base the world off of the game .. and then expand without having to worry about how perfectly it fit the IP. Let's just hope someone does something along these lines and remembers not to run out of money at 70% development **shakes fist at vanguard.

In fact, the best MMO in the bast few years, Rift ... was an original IP. TOR will probably work just fuz of the half billion they are sinking into it .. but Dune, Harry Potter .. idk .. pretty sure they'd get butchered somehow.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.

But ONLY IF you could do it with a dark preternia theme ( like the initial mini-comics ) and trash the Filmation era stuff.
