Some of the ips mentioned in this thread are pathetic and not really thought out.

Anyway here are two of mine with vast histories and Races and Classes plus connections to other worlds,it's all here in Raymond E Feist world.

Then we have another top author which for me is just as good as George R. R. Martin especially with The Farseer Trilogy.

Plenty of places and classes with minimal magic that would add a great twist to the overall game.

And ill mention Dune as well..

I don't know if anyone said this or not cause I was to lazy to check, but what about a mmo based off suikoden 2? Now that would be an awesome sandbox type mmo to make. That's just my opinion.

Start looking to books and TV shows for IP's I guess ?

    Deathlands - Post Apocalyptic MMO

Endworld - Post apocalyptic MMO with several cleary defined factions and alliances.

Robotech - MMO could be extremely awesome (3 PvP factions Human, Zentraedi & Invid)  lots & lots of mecha :)

Shadowrun - if you want to pillage more PnP RPG games properties this is the one shining jewel that has remained untouched since the paltry RPG efforst made for the 16 bit console era and the horrible bastardisation of the IP by the Microsoft FPS game. It would be really be nice to have a decent cyberpunk game and there are so many archetypes.

Dunno how you can get 11 pages on this topic without anyone suggesting Road Warrior/Mad Max/Thunderdome.

I'd also like to see a mmo set in the world William Gibson started with Neuromancer.

For classics The Illiad and The Once and Future King have enought to fill a game up.

Not sure if it can be called an IP but I'd really love some kind of "Supernatural" (the series) mmo where you would play a ghost / demon / monster hunter. It has to have some survival (and, if possible, even adventure/quest) elements and not just be a simple hack n slash, though.

Dead space (or Silent Hill) is another thought... I think it has great potential and it's survival horror too (of a kind).

Ghost in the Shell - (Hacking, creating Agencies, Deus Ex gamplay)

2nD AD&D edition Forgotten Realms done right - (Not just Faerun)

Big Trouble in Little China - (Querky 80's pulp / fantasy, GTA San Fran style sandbox hybrid, classless system, etc)

Historically accurate Feudal Era Japan (or any kick ass feudal setting, China, Euorpe, etc) sandbox - (Create a Clan, fight for land and honor, etc.)

Willow the Movie IP, pretty cool setting imo

I think an MMO based on the Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi would be an excellent IP.

It is post-apocalyptic but not in a usual way.

It is a post-monoculture-blight scenario. (i.e. people farmed too few crops and a virus/bacterium was able to wipe out most plants on earth).

So some major game element would be crafting new food strains, fighting over the scare resources, and workable (non dustbowl) land.

The other major factor in the book is that they have bio-engineered animals as well, including humans. The Windups are not machines as the name would imply, it is just a derogatory term. They are bio engineered humans to be slaves; strong, fast, but with little willpower. The book is about one fighting her programming.

There are also bioengineered giant elephants, cats mixed with chameleon DNA that can blend into the surroundings that are the new apex predators.

The last major factor is a near depletion of fossil fuels. So most everything is bio powered, i.e. back to horses, buggies, and some spring action devices.

The book is also probably a good guide to how our children will be living so I highly recommend it.

If I had to choose a cyberpunk-ish universe to go with, it'd probably be Neuromancer/Mona Lisa Overdrive (Wm. Gibson).

    {The Neuromancer IP's been idle since '88.  Probably still owned by Interplay.}

Bio/cyber enhancement warfare--wonder if Marvel would release rights to the Deathlok/Roxxon alternate future storyline.

{ed. oops, no good "In 2007, a Deathlok feature film was supposedly at the script stage at Paramount Pictures, with screenwriter David Self"}.

Ghost has already gone to two video games--on Playstation.  Might be difficult to pry the IP loose.

    OP,

Your list is good but missing alot and somethings are in the wrong place to me.

First I will say BATTLETECH would be a lot higher on the list, hell EA's attempt at the game back in 2001-02 was proof of that.   But they actually stuck to the Battletech cannon ruleset.    Which is a good thing.

    Then you are completely missing...

Robotech aka The Macross Saga, the biggest anime franchise ever!!!!  ( ok maybe not but it was HUGE)

Deadlands is a great game, and no its not just undead cowboys vs indians, its SO much more.   But any good wild west MMO would be good.   Closest we have  to that now is Fallen Earth, and I need not go into how much that is NOT a wild west game.

Cyberpunk 2020, Its not Shadowrun...   No magic, no fantasy creatures, no elves, orcs, dwarves or stupid halflings.  Just man and machine!    Probably the best PnP RPG of all time!

Rifts, not the bad MMO, but the PnP RIFTS!   Another great game concept.

Call of Cathulu, madness, its just madness, need I say more.

Perhaps another roman era franchise to replace the now dead Roma Victor.

Motor City Online, a car game for the CAR GUY/GAL!    Not Need for Speed World, which is a dumbed down version of a car game.    But a game where you had to work out compression ratios, rod length, head clearances, valve diameters, and your rear end gear ratio.   You know stuff 90% of the MMO geek player wouldnt have a clue about.

Perhaps a Japanese Samurai based MMO, something set in fuedal Japan.

So much crap, so little quality.

    One Piece!

It would honestly be an incredible basis for an amazing Pirate MMO. If I were to talk about all the reasons why I thought so, there would be one huge wall of text here =D

Some IPs I wouldnt mind seeing as an MMO in no particular order

    1. Suikoden- doesnt have to be solely based on one area that any game did, though I would prefer it take place after all the games, if for the sake of not playing on a doomed side, plus have a raid boss or something similar include Neclord.=D

    2.  Dune- I would also prefer they avoid just having House Harkonnen and Atradies, perhaps have that 3rd make believe house added in the RTS House Ordos, or something from the book.  The problem is I don't think Arakis would be all that interesting, you got desert OMG WORM!, than you got more desert OMG WORM! etc, would have to work in some other places too I think.(Sorry that I mispelled...well all the names probably btw)

    3.  Elder Scrolls world, I would like to see Morrowind, or the earlier areas in modern graphics, or at least improved from what they were.  Dunno have PvP would work, but the world itself seems interesting.

    4.  Deus Ex- Maybe set after Invisable War, dunno if whatever company trying to make it would surive the fanrage(for whatever reason) or if it could be done well, or if it could.  Still it would be an interesting modern/near future setting in my opinon.

    5. X-Com- Now I'm positive fanrage would be VERY strong on this one, since they are trying to petition a name change for a FPS X-Com game coming out.  Still, I think this could be another interesting one.  In one of the later games you had corperations that hated each other and may work with the Aliens, and again, if it was possibly to do right, might be another fun modern/near future setting.

The roots of this game are based on a famous chinese legend called "The Water Margin", there was a tv series based on it during the seventies. I believe there are a few characters in the ftp mmo Nine Dragons that are related to either suikoden and/or the water margin.... all three are connected, if somewhat loosely.

I'd love to see an MMORTS based on this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_War a dungeons and dragon epic involving a massive interdimensional war between chaotic evil Demons and Lawful evil devils.

When you throw in the mercenary fiends the yugoloths, you have a potentially three way fight. Rather than levels, the player would start out as a larval form of the chosen faction and gradually evolve and gain evil followers. Accumulate power/territory, maybe even infiltrate other worlds and gain an eventual demi-god status.

Some other ideas I had while replying to the Dinosaur thread.

    Dinotopia!

Crush, Crumble and Chomp!  (Apple II era video game, loosely based on):

The Creature that Ate Sheybogen (Boardgame: SPI)

Godzilla  (Tokyo raid in 20 minutes!  Please join channel TokyoRaid_62)

Ultra Man (I've already called 'driver' in the Science Patrol Corvair!)

Power Rangers!!  (Progress from the original through the various incarnations)

But, then again, this barrel may have had its bottom scraped a few too many times by now.  Just go with something original.  That way you don't need to by the IP development rights.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Xenas world been long time since i seen the show, so it eludes me. However, it is big lots of lore etc etc.

    What about Crazy Taxi? lol

imagine 100s of taxis bashing around town demolition derby style!! lol

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

I rarely consider movie or book franchises as holding solid potential for good MMORPGs. The best sources for inspiration actually come from older tabletop and video game franchises.

    Battletech / Mechwarrior

Starfleet Battles (rather than the current STO)

Command & Conquer (Tiberium not RA)

    Halo

    DOOM!

    Alternity

    Rolemaster (Shadow)

    RuneQuest (Glorantha)

Empire of the Petal Throne (Tekumel)

    Shadowrun (big possibilities)

That’s a few off the top of my head.

A MMORPG called "DC". Have the Democrats and Republicans go at it Duke Nukem style with chairs and brief cases for weapons. "A totally destuctable environment" the game could boast. With timed events where they have to bash each other as the timer runs out on the debt ceiling. Wait, that game would never get past the censors. Explicit sexual references, graphic violence, profanity and drug and alcohol use.  Never mind.

I may know the least here, but I am the loudest about what I do know.

Yeah... It's called Ancient Greek Mythology. A MMO based on the Mythology would be epic. Of course all of the Gods would have to play a very big part in the game as most of the best stories have to do with the Gods messin' with each other using humans as pawns. A lot of the time the humans would get the upper hand however. Hercules, Xena, Clash of the Titans, Troy, 300, Jason and a Agronaughts and a whole host of other TV shows and movies are based on Greek Mythology. There is so much lore involved that a MMO would find it very difficult to encompass it all.
