This thread was inspired by an offhand comment I saw on another board. The poster mentioned that AC was 1000x bigger than WoW (in terms of landmass).
Now I'm curious. Is there a website out there that keeps track of how big every game is, and compares to other games? Obviously, theres no way to "measure" this, but it would be fun to see estimates
particularly if they were put into real life units (square miles).
At the very least we can get ballpark figures from the more experienced players out there. What game is the biggest? The smallest? That sort of thing.
Comments
Dark and Light is by far the biggest, with 40,000 square km of landmass. Not sure what the smallest is though... UO is pretty small.
DaoC may be 1000x bigger, but I prefer quality over quantity.
Shoite shoite shoite. I'm /really/ transforming into a WoW fanboy.
Awk!
I need an adult! I need an adult!

I think World War II Online still holds the title for the largest area. Though I don't know the exact size.

Dark and Light does not exist yet.
There was a time when A Tale in the Desert actually claimed the largest landmass. I'd have to wonder if EQ (the original) has the most now...the sheer quantity of zones they have in that game is mind boggling.

Should I remind you of Wish? There are plenty more examples where that came from.
EVE Online.
EVE Online lol, yeah, I guess you got them there.
lol true, gotta be the biggest
Aye, I think nothing can beat the sheer vastness of Eve Online.
However........ If we are talking landmass, and you count how many planets you can actually "play" on in Eve, landmass is quickly reduced to 0.

Well I would think that most folk are talking about the "playable area" and not actual landmass. In EVE we go right through them planets as well lolz.
Well Eve would still win .
But what unit can we use to measure it? Lightyears cubed?

I use the old measure of playing for 2yrs+ and I still havent been or seen hardly anywhere/everywhere.

Comparison list of some worlds to get a sense of the scale.
Total area (square kilometers):
Dark and Light - 40,000
SWG (all worlds) - 2025
Horizons - 1024
WoW - 950
AC1 - 576
EQ1 - 144
UO - 49
How many times each world fits into Dark and Light:
Dark and Light - 1
SWG (all worlds) - 20
Horizons - 39
WoW - 42
AC1 - 69
EQ1 - 278
UO - 816
What % of Dark and Light does each world make up:
Dark and Light - 100 %
SWG (all worlds) - 5 %
Horizons - 2.6 %
WoW - 2.4 %
AC1 - 1.4 %
EQ1 - 0.4 %
UO - 0.1 %
(Edit: Added WoW as estimate taken from player travel times, other results based on known figures. No information is known for other mmorpgs at this time)
40,000 km? Bah! a noob ship in EVE flys at around 6AU ( 1 Astronomical Unit = 149 598 000 000 meters) XYZ axis for the win! and you can spend hours in warp stop anywhere in "a" system and its all playable area, and there are like 5.000 solar systems in EVE.
I do understand the point that he is making btw but nothing beats EVE-Online for Scale.
Yes, but get rid of motorized transportation and those states will seem HUGE to you.

Way back when, in the good ol' noobie days when the land was still fresh, I decided to treck from Trinsic to Yew, took me about 2 hours including stops to beat the occasional troll down. Once you get a horse you can probably do the same in under or around half an hour. Excluding the new land masses which I havent played in UO is pretty small. But what was there was perfect, UO was the greatest MMOG ive played.

Ok, I had to look it up for fun...
So based on a previous post, UO was 49^2 km. So, let's say the land mass of UO is 7km x 7km. The average 18 year old boy can run 1km in 4 minutes 19 seconds. So to do 7 km, assuming he didn't tire, it would be like 29 minutes. Even if he stopped for a 30 minute rest in the middle, it should still only take 1 hour! Therefore, based on these calculations we can only assume that gravity in Ultima Online is stronger than gravity here on earth making long distance travel that much harder.

I /seriously/ doubt the average 18 year old can run a km within 4 minutes and 19 seconds. The fittest of my class, at the age of 16, did 1200m within 5:34 now (or something) and he's a semi-proffesional SOCCER PLAYER now. I do it in 7:29 and I'm joining the navy. Then again I was 15(and really fat), but I /really/ doubt the average 18 year old does that fast. If the average ones do it so fast how fast do the athletes and the fat kids do it?

In fact WWIIonline is the largest MMO to date. I don't have the figures at my fingertips, but I am sure if you look up the information you will see for yourself how large that game is.

Thanks for the analyis, blacksac. Very interesting. CoH isn't mentioned but I imagined that's even smaller than UO.
I'm not really counting Eve Online since it's such a different type of game. Hence specifying "landmass" in my original post.
