I want to like it so much because I'm a huge star wars fan and I loved galaxies and I will buy it regardless because I'm a huge star wars nerd...
but I'm also a veteran MMO player. I've played UO, Shadowbane, Eve, DAOC, EQ, EQ2, Vanguard, WoW, Rift, and more....
This game just seems like it's building off hype and the star wars name. All the trailers I've seen, all the videos... really leave me with this feeling of "cheesy and another cash cow". It doesn't leave me with this degree of OMG this game is perfection and totally going to kick ass. Reading the features, and keeping up on the game itself... only eight classes, space combat is a joke, and yeah... another korean grind to make you pay money monthly long enough to milk ya. Sigh. I've got it preordered because I'm an idiot lol
Bottom line is I've seen very little in the ways of "this is what other mmo's do, we're going to take that and build on it and improve it in this way" Instead I'm seeing, "AWESOME LIGHTSABER FIGHT!" and what star wars things will be in the game.

It's all about the story, for me. It's Bioware, it's The Old Republic, KOTOR was/is one of my favorite RPGs and now I can play with friends. /sold
Pre-ordered too because,
A) Haven't played an MMORPG in ages.
Bored.
C) If I'm gonna blow my cash it may as well be on a Star Wars MMORPG made by Bioware.
D) I like fencing.
E) I'm going to a Gary Numan concert next month.
F) This makes me moist CLICK

You are right, you are an idiot if you dislike the game that much and then pre-ordered it. Seriously, it has been known for years now that is not SWG and you are just now figuring that out? It is the spiritual successor to KotoR and that has been it's aim since the start of development.
Theres quite a few things they took and improved
They took the quest npcs, instead of just standing there like a bump on a log they have them moving and talking, even have them making empressions.
They've made the quests branch which means instead of doing
1-------->2------->3---------4
You now have this.
---------4
--------3
--------4
-------2
1----
--------2
-------4
---------3
--------4
The green represents a possible route you could take.
Naturally not all quests will end in completely different endings but the journey could be completely different.
Allowing a person to join another person quests and even interact in their quests (not your own, theirs) and having an impact in their quest is a improved way of doing questing.
Crafting is improved as well with allowing both casual and hardcore to do crafting.
Item customization is improved as well as mods tend to dictate stats more then the item itself. Plus mods change not only the color but the sound of the weapon as well.
Combat asethics are improved by having swords (lightsabers if you will) actually clash and bullets from blasters bouncing off of lightsabers.
When you go into an instance you zone seemlessly (meaning no load screens, you can walk in and out of instances just as you walk in and out of a door.)
Just a few things i think they have taken and improved on.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
can we please stop with the Korean grind phrase? its offensive and not even accurate. Of the few Korean MMOs ive played (before NA release), none had a huge xp grind. That was added later for the NA release. And besides, American devs were the ones that invented the infinite xp grind. All they are doing in Korea is trying to give Americans what they want. Im just getting tired of seeing people write Asian game or Korean grinder in a derogatory way. I wish the mods would step in when they see this but whatev.
wow really you are a MMO vet and you still don't know what the trailers are about?
Watch the links below, the dev here did not use his AWESOME lightsaber once, click on those :

Indeed.. and now it will be open endgame as well. well said
Ever hear of a little game called Lineage 2 or even Aion? Both were scaled down in the US from the Korean versions.
Well, seeing as Korea produces most of them and the most extreme of them...it only seems fitting.
Korean grind is different from American grind because Korean and American gamers have different taste.
I feel the same way, but SWTOR is bringing the story element into the MMO Genre, that's pretty cool (no sarcasm). I just feel the gameplay looks weak, and really, that's all I care about. It's what made me play WoW for so long.
Yes! How dare a game company focus on story line and mechanics! It's all about the eye candy! Just ask Square Enix, Sony Entertainment (who went SO overboard that only the leetest of their players could afford a rig to even play the damned game), or NCSoft. They went heavy on the eyecandy and light on those things no one wants......ability to run the game, mechanics......fun.
If you want to reach a wide audience, you don't put system crippling visuals in a game and expect to make a ton of money. I'll take fun factor over "ooh purty" factor anyday.
PS - It's not like there has ever been a cartoony graphics MMO that has consistently held over 8 million subs or anything......oh wait...
DING! DING! DING!
A winner is you.
Seriously. IMO, TOR looks fine, not mind blowing like AoC but fine. Good art, good asthetics, average/above average graphics and I'm cool with that. I really just want my hundreds of hours of single player storyline combined with a full fledged universe to explore and quest on with my RL friends and NPC companions.
DING! DING! DING!
A looser is you.
Ever heard about graphics scaling? Check out LOTRO for example! It can run on pretty much any system! Yet people who like "shiny" graphics and invested in a good rig can max out the graphics and enjoy the game in full glory!
I'm not saying SW:TOR looks crap... it doesn't and looks decent, BUT! The Hero Engine they licensed is capable of more and better... so it's a missed opportunity in my book.
Especially since they are already bragging about a 15 year roadmap. Well sorry, but in a couple years from now this game is going to look extremely dated already! So they will have to start investing in updating the graphics sooner than later.
One thing I still can not find is the system requirements for this game. So basically we have no idea what kind of set up will be needed NOR do we know if the graphics will be scale-able. Granted, they could have said something by now, but they could also be saving that for the pre-launch advertising buildup. It would be a nice little treat after all and even you admit the Hero Engine is capable of it.
As for the 15 year quote, you might want to go check that little bit of info out. It seemed a pretty clear case of hyperbole to me when read in the context of the interview.
So who is the real looser here? The person that thinks he will be happy with what he is getting or the person that is making assumptions with no actual evidence to back them up?
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"

from the SWToR website:
"this game looks like crap?"
I can answer this, no, it looks fine.
I've pre-ordered it because my Lotro kin is going to be playing it but I don't expect it to last for long. I won't be playing any light sabre classes as that's too close to the swords in every other mmo. So it's blasters for me. That means a Smuggler on one side, then a Bounty Hunter on the other. By the time I've done that, I expect to be bored with it and it's back to LotRO until the next big thing, which I presume will be GW2.
True, "shit empire has returned" certainly is a catchy phrasy
I agree slightly with the OP. I will still buy the game and try it out but I am not convinced it will keep me. The story element looks great and I love the voiceovers. I am not even too concerned by the graphics (although the cartoon-like world isn't Star Wars for me). The thing that gets me is the static stand-in-the-middle-of-the-room-grinding-the-enemy-down WoW-like combat. What were they thinking?
I can only assume that they fear adding FPS or KotOR-like systems will scare more casual people away because they think that they won't be able to handle the combat. If Bioware are really going for a WoW demographic with people who don't normally play computer games, they may feel they need a simplistic target and click system. It is a real shame, and I may find myself playing GW2 instead.
You do know there is like a 200-300+ hr storyline for each class that is entirely different than every other class. So after you play through 2 classes, you still have 6 others with plenty of new content to see and play through. Well maybe only 2 since you said you don't like the lightsaber wielders, but you could change your mind!
Granted I'm sure there will be plenty of overlaping quests and various locals frequently visted across all classes, but as long as the story is unique and being seen/played from a different side/angle it'll still be great!
The whole MMO scene is heading for a huge mondo meltdown.
Don't hold your breath for 200-300hr of storyline for each char. They would have to be VERY similar.
Story alone will most likely be 20-30h, the rest will be level grinding. Unless you count all quests as storyline? Going by that wow has like 1000hr worth of storyline ;p
I must say I think you're greatly exaggerating when you say the graphics are 1995 in their quality, take a look at this gameplay clip CLICK. That was certainly not of a low standard as far as MMORPGs go or most computer games for that matter, if it was then you need to upgrade your GPU.
