There have been no aesthetic changes to the game. They have a wardobe feature so you can choose the least bad looking armor (only for your class's armor type) and can dye armors, however the dyes just tint armor so even when you use the same dyes colors don't match. Currently PvPers are griping because the rank 8 gear is just recycled looks from the previous ranks.

So much for the 'gameplay is everything' argument. Here is someone who has rejected a game based on the 1-40 gear aesthetics and sexist desires.
The gameplay is no different than any traditional MMORPG. The only thing Rift has going for it regarding gameplay is the soul system which is continually buffed/nerfed due to PvP. Rift (particularly at endgame) brings nothing new or interesting to the table. Even the titular mechanic of the game is underused and takes a back seat to raiding and warfronts (yes, even with 1.4).
Like raiding? WoW does it better.
Like aesthetics? Many games do it better- hell even CoH & CO have better character creators.
Like PvP? WoW, WAR, and especially DAoC do it better.
(these are games I pulled off the top of my head- I'm sure there are many other games that trump Rift in certain areas as well)
I don't think it ever looked like shit. I'm sure every game could use more variety in appearance but with the wardrobe feature you can pretty much customize your appearance any way you want it.

Possibly, but I quit after 1 month of gameplay, when I actually realised what Trion was expecting me to do as a gamer in Rift. So, the wardrobe was after my time... all I can tell you is that my rogue was looking like crap at lvl 1, and was looking like crap at lvl 50.
“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

And who are you to determine what makes a game worth playing for someone else. If someone enjoys a game because of the graphics, then they can go ahead and enjoy it. People like things for different reasons.
I know I wouldnt want to play a game, especially an mmo where my character looks the same the entire time, especially if they look horrible. Gameplay isn't everything for everyone.
Actually there are some really cool looking players running around + dont forget theres the wardrobe so you can look how you like in the end unlike the apparent market leader (not to me though) RIFT ALL THE WAY its like being a surfer but being a gamer! Im rifting those rifts man!

thanks for keeping it real and pointing out the facts

I quit because of the obnoxiously ham handed approach to soul balancing. Rather than tweaking balance, if a soul combo was a little over-powered in Trion's eyes, they would just nerf it completely out of existance. However, the poor aesthetics were also a big drag for me and made it easier to quit. I haven't seen armor as bad as in Rift in a long time. It's like someone pulled armor from some early 90s MMO into Rift.
The game is supposedly a success, so why not hire modelers and texture artists that can actually make good quality armor and weapons? Most fan made armors for games like Oblivion and Dragon Age look better than the professional stuff in Rift.
The Wardrobe Tab + Dyes does alleviate some of the problems. Many raid pieces also look acceptable.
But over all, the game is woefully bland. Forget the gear; character silhouettes are not distinct in any shape or form.
It's strange because NPCs (they have their own unique custom models) like Cyril Kalmar or Asha have very powerful, distinguishing silhouettes and looks. I am unsure why Trion couldn't add some oomph to their player character models and player character gear.
Perhaps it would lag too much (but how are other MMOs doing it?) or perhaps it's the engine that restricts it.

You should take a look at vendors and quest givers, heck even Shyla suffers from this. Their faces all look like a fuzzy low rez version of the otherwise detailed player characters.
I found some decent looking stuff over the levels, as a few of the higher level pieces. Just some the Exotic Leather Bridgage(However you spell that) looked very fuzzy low rez compared to the detail of other pieces.

Liking how your character looks is not 'sexist', so lets not be silly and start throwing trollish insults at each other.
A character, for the majority, is an essential connection with the game. Do not underestimate the importance of aesthetics and customisation in terms of retention... they are really important.
Rift models, to me, always looked like crap once you got them out of the character designer and into game, and the gear was even worse. It was definitely a contributing factor as to why I didnt sub.
if you roll a warrior you re supposed to look like a warrior in plate gees, same for a mage,if he is a mage he should look like a mage, not a porn star out of playboy or playgirl mansion lol.

I agree but warrior in Rift still looked crap compared to my Chosen in WAR . Imo models in Rift were far from what could be done .
While I do agree that the armor styles are a bit lacking with variety and imagination, I think it's because they wanted to take a more realistic (not completely realistic) approach rather than WoW style floating swords/shoulders and glowing everything. Which imo, is a LOT better because when you gear up in WoW, you look like a GIANT piece of floating metal walking around with swords twice the length and size of your body.

Rift armour and weapons realistic..lol dream on the armour is about as unrealistic as you can get.

This thread needs more cookie shields, just sayin'
BOOYAKA!
Well, I have rejected it for it's PvP, Dailies, craft, dungeons, gear-for-points AND looks. Does everything before "looks" count as gameplay?

I got a chuckle out of the the title.

Pardon my English as it is not my 1st language
Most of the equipment still looks like crap. sad, but true.

The cookie shield is bad. I think the mouse head helmet is worse though.
Is that seriously a helmet?

Rift and WAR have a completely different artstyle.
Warhammer always had a bad ass out there style, Rift is more grounded, well atleast early on.
Thankfully we have cosmetic armor and a great dye system.
Heres what my characters look like its a 50 rogue and a mid level cleric.

Here ya go. They dont look bad imo.
Playing: Nothing
Looking forward to: Nothing
TO answer the OP. no the gear doesnt look like shit. For certain callings like the rogue you need to get creative.
As an example my skull outfit is put together with a couple low level peices.
Honestly i've seen mmos with much uglier armor.
