    Basically what NightAngell said.

There is a difference between realistic, and bland. The NPC Cyril Kalmar's armour manages to be both realistic, and attractive. Player character armour, however is most often not.

Since taste is subjective, I won't say it's ugly (some pieces ought to be universely ugly IMO >_>), but my over all critique is that the armour lacks a distinct, vivid aesthetic and of course, variety.

Obviously, Trion is very dedicated to their game; maybe down the line they will have a much needed art update.

I hate to bring GW2 into this but many of the pieces we have seen from that game combine reasonable realistism and style.

"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."

I need to take this advice more.

They've replaced some of the armor skins with different ones that you get while you level in dungeons. Most of it so far is just skins of later armor, probably because that's where the good looking stuff is and they want players to be able to get those looks sooner. There's supposedly some new cosmetic stuff coming in 1.5 and 1.6 so we'll see.

Which imo, is a LOT better because when you gear up in WoW, you look like a GIANT piece of floating metal walking around with swords twice the length and size of your body.

Rift armour and weapons realistic..lol dream on the armour is about as unrealistic as you can get.

    Realistic Armour looks like this..

Nah, Vanguard surely was nice, but it still has that plasticity look.  FFXIV is the current reigning champion for realistic armor, but too bad its not doing so well just yet.  Hopefully it'll get better in another 8-10mo or a year.

This is my char in XIV, maximum settings and using 32xQ MSAA:

Lol.. that armour does not look realistic IMO. Vanguards armour trumps it all day long,if anyone wants to see what i am talking about then try the vanguard trail and see what starter armour you get.

Just the newbie armour on the trail island trumps FFXIV and rifts top level armour in looks.

Equipment does look pretty bland. It just doesn't have a good aesthetic.

Most realistic armors I've seen in an mmo probably is in AoC.

The character models looks fine, the look on gear is at least easy to change.

I do agree, it should look better and I hope the get someone with a litle better taste for stuff like that hired to make the gear for the first expansion.

But ugly gear is very common in MMOs, just like unrealistic weapons and armors.

I agree here. I don't see rift armor as very realistic, though certainly less outlandish than WOW's stylized approach (paludrons of DOOM). I find the rift armor very uninspired. Then again I find the whole game pretty uninspired. I will say the character models weren't too bad (except for the elf ears ...wow...)
